Good late morning! Happy Thursday! Just wanted to pop and say hi and thinking of you to Karen VA in regards to your grandson. My heart is with you! Some one made a comment earlier this week about logging all of your meals early in the day. I do this, too. I often find myself making exactly what I recorded, but sometimes it gives me a little lee way to have something extra or make switches. Like today, I ran out of yogurt a couple of days ago and have been having only a protein shake and coffee for breakfast. Most days that is fine, but today, I am SO HUNGRY!! For lunch I recorded a bowl of cabbage soup (that will finish off the soup), but after I recorded what I plan to have for dinner I saw that I would have enough wiggle room to have some mac and cheese. Horrible for me; but the kids are having it for lunch and I adore pasta. ANyway, I was washing the redskin potatoes for tonight's dinner, glanced over and saw one of the HUGE zucchinis that my neighbor brought over last week. Lightbulb! Washed it, sprialized it for zoodles, added a bit of onion, egg and cheese and I have a healthier "pasta" option. Due to the real cheese (rather than the packaged cheese that comes in the box of mac and cheese that I got for the kids) the calorie count is about 100 calories higher. But it is the pasta that my body really doesn't need. I usually make home made mac and cheese for the kiddos, but I let the kids pick a meal each week and they asked for "real, from the box" mac and cheese! Ironically enough, the one who requested this gourmet meal is not here today. Go figure!
Well, just thought I would check in. Heather - Stay calm! I enjoy your frenetic packing sessions almost as much as the news of the trip! I hope you and DH have a wonderful time and his sea sickness doesn't get the best of him!4 -
Rori, Karen in VA , Lisa - thank you ladies for thinking of me. I'm here and doing all right. I'm reading posts, at this point not feeling I have much to contribute.
Love you ladies,

Good morning!
I've been following you all and I'll catch up later. Going to a luncheon today at our church with DH.

Oh, Karen. I am so sorry about your grandson. At least he is getting help, but it is still so heartbreaking.

Ok, lots of people I want to reply to, but it is hard to keep track ( I'm awful remembering names and accessing the forum on a phone makes it even harder).
Machka: I'm going to have to try the evening primrose oil, this is the first I've ever heard of it. My vitamin with black cohosh doesn't seem to have any effect at all. Like you any hormonal therapy is out, but I don't have any of the additional health worries so I will just thank my lucky stars. Lol, easier said than done when I'm mid - WHOOSH (as my DH named it), turning my cieling fan up to max and disrobing...lol but I do try to hold on to the thought that they are bad, but could be worse.
Lenora: I loved your hat stories. I could use a "shut up my sister" story myself! In my family nobody wore hats except for me. I remember being in a department store with my mother and her laughing at the ugliest hat - red feathered and huge - she'd ever seen in her life. She said 'here daughter let's put this on you and see what it looks like!' I'll never forget her face as she opened her eyes in amazement and said 'goodness gracious it looks good on you. Just like my mother you seem to have a face for hats.' I have a picture my mother gave me of my grandmother in the 1930s on her way to church wearing the cutest little white top hat I've ever seen. I need to find that.
Felicia: can you believe I've never been to a Disney park? I wish I were there with you but I am a thrill ride person…. I hope you and your family are having a fantastic time.
Heather: your crew sounds so wonderful to me. I've been on a couple in my life and they have been simply fantastic! (By the way I lived in London for a while, I miss it a lot but it is probably good thing that I live in a country with no access to Cadberry flakes lol.).
Tere: I wish you all the best trying to manage that asthma. Ever since I was a little girl I can get sick to my stomach if I'm around smells – usually florally – that are too strong. It is not life-threatening, but I have lost my stomach contents in the presence of one specific men's cologne. Luckily I've only encountered it three or four times in my life. One of the things I love about my current Gym is they have a strict no fragrance policy. It is enforced, but even so occasionally a waft of sent stops me in my tracks.
Lisa: I hope today is a good day for you. On the better thing – I was just so glad to find out it was not totally in my head, that there was a reason these foods that everyone I knew seem to like tasted so bad to me. (I'll save my long and convoluted story of why knowing the origins of my oddities is so important to me for a later time - suffice it to say I face a number of physical challenges and limitations that were extremely poorly understood/diagnosed until I was an adult.)
To all the eclipse watchers: I may be joining you, my husband sure wants to. I think staying home might make more sense but he seems determined to drive north and find someplace to experience the full eclipse. I'm hoping his inherent laziness wins out this time.
Have a good day all!

Well, I will call my sister's care facility in about an hour to see if this morning is a good time to visit. I have to take hubby to work because we have just one rental car. I told the boys they could sleep in, so when I get back from dropping hubby off, I am going to take an hour to walk/run another c25k week one day. The boys and I each got a jamba juice as we left the park last night. We needed something, but it messed with my calories. Even with 19,000 steps yesterday, I wasn't in a deficit.
Anyway, after visiting my sister, we are going to spend a few hours at Huntington beach, then pick up hubby from work. The plan is for a quiet evening at the pool side movie tonight because tomorrow we hit California Adventure early. It's been a fun vacation. It's hard to believe it's already Thursday.
Oh, I am married to Eeyore. Makes it hard sometimes.
Everyone take care as we try to make positive choices for ourselves.

I had a little breast cancer scare a couple years ago ... I was having a bit of a bad time then! Fortunately the lump was benign. But the specialist told me about evening primrose oil then. I started taking 1 a day. Then more recently it was suggested that I up it to 3 a day (which is the recommended amount on the bottle), and perhaps that has made a difference.

H there ladies! I don't post often but love, love reading your posts and advice.
Today however I saw something that has upset me deeply and I need advice on how to mentallys deal with it.
I was picking up my twin boys from school. While waiting in the car another car pulled up next to me. The mom got out and a while later returned with her approx. 10 yr old daughter. Once inside the car, the mom started screaming at the child and started hitting her. The child tried to duck but the mom just kept on hitting her. Before I could get out to stop her she drove off still carrying on hitting her.
I've never seen or experienced physical abuse.I'm just so terribly horrified by what I saw.
I have never seen the child before, just so sad for this poor child.
Love
Bianca from South Africa5 -
Lenora sorry about the car. Accidents are a hassle.
I am in the process of finally getting my mom's dresses from the 40's, 50's, and 60's ready to sell. When going through her home I found them in the attic where they had hung in bags for 50 years. I took them because we used to go to a vintage dress up party once a year. The last one I attended I dressed up in the uniform she wore when she volunteered at the blood mobile. The party doesn't happen anymore, so I am ready to let go of most of them. While visiting with a friend at a her vintage garage sale I met someone who showed interest, so next week I will give her a call. She also knows someone else who sells vintage clothes.
Machka you sound on top of what you need to do to stay healthy.
Tere hope you feel better soon.
Karen prayers for your family. Hoping he is open to the help he needs. It is normal for your son to be angry. He is very upset like any parent facing this would be. It is also hard on his sister because all the focus will be on her brother. It is hard when a family member is facing a life threatening illness so young.
Janetr good to see you and like your picture.

Pip: Hasn't that HRM been failing to record for a while now? What should it be telling you about yourself? Just curious.
Machka: I took no medications for the "change" during peri-menopausal years after a brief try that left me feeing awful. My OBGYN predicted I'd be back for hormones, but I did just fine without them. Actually, with all I've learned about those artificial hormones, my body did me a favor by throwing a hissy fit right at the beginning. I didn't think so at the time.
Sue: I have offered to help out at the stable during this heat and that offer was declined so I haven't been there. I think the horses are loafing in their shady stalls. They get plenty of water. I expect to have a lesson early Saturday & I've asked my teacher for a lesson on hooves. I was very upset by what I saw the last time I went out to ride Arrow. He seemed footsore so I quit my ride very quickly and just led him around for a bit before I put him back in his stall. He does have a small paddock connected with his stall.
Toni: We are going to Idaho for an eclipse viewing. There is a place directly on the path of the event. DSIL and her best friend are stargazers and have planned it for a group of us.
Tere: I hope you're feeling better for the job interview. My mom took prednisone for years as a treatment for temporal arteritis and hated it. I hope it doesn't give you nasty side effects. :noway:
Sharon in Lethbridge: My dad served in the Solomon Islands during WWII. He was aboard a ship that was attacked by Kamikazi fighters and worked on shore in an area where the US used flamethrowers. He had nightmares for the rest of his life.
Karen: I've taken buproprion for years with very good results. It helps me stay focused and functions like an ADD med in my life. Regarding your DGS, anger on the part of dad about the situation is understandable but I sure hope he doesn't let his son see it. Anger would not be okay if your DGS feels like it is his fault. :noway:
Today is supposedly going to have a high of 106F. Yikes. Thank God for air conditioning! My plans are to stay cool at home most of the day but I also plan to go to yoga this morning.

KJ - I'm glad I am keeping you amused with my packing neurosis. DH always laughs at me and leaves it to the last minute, but it looks as if he is going to have to avail himself of my second suitcase. He has to take a formal suit and tie (he doesn't possess a dinner jacket ) plus a linen jacket for the smart evenings. He hates all that stuff, but managed to bear it well enough last time.
I am officially packed! :drinker:
We have time to clear the fridge and rubbish in the morning. DH is hoping to get some exercises done, but I think I need to concentrate on washing hair, making myself beautiful, making a packed lunch etc. Just once won't kill me.
Salmon tonight. AF day for me.
Where is Penny? Lovely to see Janetr back. Missed you.

Bianca ~ So sorry you had to witness the mom being so brutal to the little girl. Unfortunately, there could have been so many things leading up to her behavior...drugs, alcohol, or just totally losing it. Your boys are fortunate to have you!
Heather ~ Lovely photo of you and your hubby. Yes, that is a very pretty dress and you look pretty in it.
Hormone Replacements ~ When I was 39 I had a total hysterectomy and my husband left me for 6 months because I became such a b@#$&. I had estrogen shots, patches, and pills. Finally got it under control and took the HRT for the next 10 years. So glad I can feel normal again without the meds.
Vacuumed and mopped this AM. Need a gold star!

Ladies - the discussion from the past couple days got me thinking about "the hungries" and when/what I eat.
I realize, I eat just about the same thing (same type of thing) every day and have done so for years. Example:
Breakfast is nearly always an egg scrambled with mushrooms or kale, other veggies sautéed in butter, with a piece of fruit or tomato or other veggie on the side.
Snack is nearly always a low carb muffin - I cut it into quarters when I make it and sometimes eat it all at once, sometimes half at a time.
Late breakfast/early lunch is nearly always 1/3 c applesauce (home made no or very little sugar), handful of walnuts broken into chunks, big tablespoon of plain whole milk yogurt (probably 1/3 cup) topped off with a handful of berries or cherries, 1/2 banana, etc. I call it my "parfait".
Lunch - nearly always 1 c. chili (my own) or bean soup or bean salad - something "beany"
Supper - nearly always 2 cups coleslaw mix - shredded cabbage with carrots, 1 T Litehouse Caesar Caesar dressing and 1/4 c three bean salad with a bit of the juice (vinegar with some sugar). Depending on how hungry I am, I'll add maybe half a chunked up avocado and top it off with a bit of what I make for DH if I'm cooking like a little piece of roast beef and potato, or some chunked up ham or chicken.
If I'm a good girl, I have an after supper snack of some cheese or nuts and a piece of fruit. If I'm a bad girl... well, I try to keep her locked out of the house with the Reesecup twins and Little Debbie.
Anyhow, I know several of you have mentioned you also eat the same thing each day. I'm lucky in that DH is on his own for lunch (he generally eats a hot dog and has for years...puts mustard and sauerkraut on it. His doctors have chastised him for it! ) If I don't feel like cooking he'll cobble together his own supper.
In the meantime, I mainline coffee all morning, often up to 5 small cups with a bit of whole milk.... of course I make many trips to the bathroom but what the heck.
If I'm unable to keep to my favorite foods above, it really throws me off. So if I'm going to be gone for a while I'll take along a banana or little baggie of mixed nuts or half of my low-carb muffin.
My first sign of being hungry is blood sugar dropping - feeling kind of faint and weak. My tummy hasn't "growled" in a long time...I think eating nuts helps a lot.
As a result, I really have to go crazy with the desserts, brownies, ice cream, junk food to gain a lot of weight anymore and cutting out the beer has really, really helped. I'm down about 30 lbs from where I was 10 years ago.
Make it a great day, ladies.

Hello there!
Had a great deep water class today. It feels so good to be back in the water!

Karen - hugs for you and prayers for your grandson.
Janetr - I always enjoy hearing from you.
Missing Penny and Carrie's posts. Did Marni ever get back in touch with us while I was AWOL? She always had such great pictures to share and a great sense of humor, too.

Happy Thursday ladies!
Up early, watered plants I didn’t get to last night, did my strength exercises, enjoyed the red sunrise-the smoke wasn’t bad yet. We are gearing up for the last of the “super duper hot” days. Anxiously awaiting Friday evening’s offshore flow which I hope arrives as promised and can scour out some of the smoke….
Am very grateful our house is insulated as well as it is, keeps fairly cool until mid afternoon. Our poor little A/C heat pump ran well into the night last night … I waited until it was 80 outside before tapping it down to 70 at around 9 pm.
After several days of not cooking, this morning I lightly browned some pre-cooked smoked pork chops and sliced up some cooked potatoes into the that skillet – put a touch of color on them. I hope looks good to DH for supper. Something easy to zap in the microwave. Didn’t heat up the kitchen since I had all the windows open – it was 58 outside for a little bit.
Tere – hope the prednisone comes through for you! Don’t blame you for limiting exposure to perfumes and other triggers. It used to be “the wierdos” didn’t like to smell perfumes but now more and more people appreciate not be assaulted in this way, I know I don’t like them either and have tossed out most of my fragrance collection.
Sharon – glad to hear the rain arrived! So true what you said about worry that your DH’s self-esteem is tied to his work ethic. Hopefully he can find something to do that will satisfy him when he can no longer do the physical work. I kind of went through that when I retired, too, having worked all my life. I do think it’s harder on guys.
This morning I had the laptop open to this thread, DH just glanced at the screen as he was getting coffee. I told him it’s my “fitness ladies” and his only comment was that I have more friends with you gals than he’s had in his entire life. I think that’s true of introverts. I consider you gals my “friends” but we don’t live close, have coffee, go shopping together, yak on the phone all day, etc. and rarely do that anyhow with anyone, but am starting to “have lunch” with friends at least once a month.
Karen in VA – (((hugs)))) to you and your family regarding your grandson’s situation. You are all in my prayers. So very tough being a kid who is different, especially these days.
Bianca – I don’t know what the laws are where you live, might be worth reporting to the school or someone so they can be aware of other signs of child abuse, if you can figure out who the little girl is. Hopefully someone else noticed so she doesn't have to suffer unnoticed.
I agree with Toni - where are Marni and Penny and Carrie? I want to see photos of icebergs, glaciers, snowshoes, people dressed in winter gear! "Mountain Men" is on tonight and they'll be tracking wolves through the snow, then "Alone" on rainy and cold Vancouver Island - I can't wait!
Heather – adorable photo of you and DH! Look forward to seeing photos of the trip, hope you can send some during your adventures. And hope DH is able to relax!
I’m starting to read “Fat for Fuel” by Dr. Mercola.
Ladies, there are at least a dozen more posts I want to respond to but need to close for a bit. Hugs to you all!

Heather- I remember the photo! You do look amazing in it! Those flame colors really make your skin and eyes pop! Was that the cruise that you took when you visited Penny?
Bianca in SA- Hello! I remember you! Welcome back! What a horrible thing to witness! If you don't know the girl or the mother, perhaps the school has cameras and can help identify and speak with the mother? It would be very easy for a school counselor to approach the mother and with the recorded evidence and ask about it. Or to even bring the child in to talk about their home life...Just a thought. I don't know what kind of social services you have in SA, and if they will actively get involved, but it's worth a shot.
Janet- Hello lovely lady! So nice to see your smiling face! Glad everything is going well for you. New profile pic? You look radiant in red!

Do your boys know who the girl is? If I had some way to identify the child in question I would set up an appointment with the school counselor and let him/her know what I saw. That way the school can keep an eye out for the girl and perhaps determine if this was an isolated incident or if intervention is needed.

KJ - Yes it was taken on that cruise to Svalbard. The joy of going on a small ship (only 440 paying passengers ) is that you can dock in smaller places. I had always wanted to go to the Arctic and meeting Penny was the icing on the cake! We enjoyed ourselves so much, quite unexpectedly really, that we rebooked the same cabin for this trip. We hope there will be the same captain and some of the same personnel. I'm very much hoping for the same Maitre D who kept our table for us for all our meals, against the rules.
