Sounds like postnasal drip to me if you’re poorly and congested. I get it every time I get a cold or similar. It coats my tongue and roof of my mouth over night and feels horrible. I scrub it off with a clean cloth every morning. If it is, it’ll resolve itself once you’re better. Hope that helps. X

Great, now I got it as well and remembered this thread. I had a stomach infection and lots of reflux, which has caused this I think. I get this every once in a while (1-2x per year) where my mild green tea suddenly tastes kind of bitter and waxy, always together with mild reflux.

Also found another temporary trigger: Diamox, used for preventing altitude sickness. It's basically a mild peeing pill. I tried it before a potential high altitude expedition to see if I have side effects. You basically pee out lots of good electrolytes. Basically, I got the same feeling and off taste, but it only lasted 2 days.

    Hello!
I am having the strangest feeling in my mouth and heading to the doctor soon if I can't get it resolved. The symptoms are a waxy, greasy feeling in my mouth, mostly on the tip of my tounge and the roof of my mouth.
    • Sensation started Friday night after eating some sirloin sliders. I have never had them before and I recently started eating beef again after a 27 year break. Last time I ate beef was about 2 weeks ago and this didn't happen.
    • I am 40 yo female, 120 lb, who eats healthy but no special diet.
    • It seemed worse over the weekend if I ate any fatty food, like cheese.
    • Monday morning it is worse. If I eat anything, even just plain oatmeal with no butter or salt, the sensation is so bad that I have to push the food to the back of my tongue--or it feels like I am eating the melty wax of a candle.
    • No history of peptic upset (I have a fairly iron stomach)
    • No change in saliva rate from usual
    • Maybe a very slight metallic/acid taste?
    • Also, just to disclose everything-- I went to the dentist the day before the symptoms started and had a filling put in, so some aesthetic and UV light was in my mouth. But my mouth felt totally normal for the rest of Thursday and Friday until the beef.
    • I am on no medications except for a 1/3 decongestant tab each night a sleep aid, which I have done for years
    • Vitamins: Cal/Magnesium, Vit. D, probiotics, Hyaluronic Acid

Anyone have any thoughts? I have not found hardly anyone describing such a thing online---and usually they are on medications or have GERD.

Thanks! I am pretty worried, but I hate to go in for nothing...
    Jes

I know this was posted a fairly long time ago, and don't mean to open an old thread. But I have had this exact same symptom recently and started freaking out about it. The first time I had it was after I ate gummy type candy, and tonight was after I ate S'morgs (I think they are called) Or Marshmallows. I searched online and this thread came up. Then I realized it only started happening after I ate the massive S'morg. I wonder if there is something in the ingredients? Slimy feeling in mouth and tongue that will not go away. Metallic taste. Feels like I have oil in my mouth. So gross and weird.

Did you ever have a resolution to this? I am experiencing the same thing, to a T, starting about 4 days ago. Perplexed!

This happened to me after I had a tonsillectomy. I also lost a crap ton of my taste also. I think it has something to do with damage of nerves or an allergic reaction for sure!

Actually, I had something similar during a visit in Utah. But I know what caused it. First three days I had a lot of pineapple, and I'm slightly allergic to it: gives me a somewhat hurting, numb tongue. I must have eaten other things that cause similar problems the following days, maybe an additive in food or tap water. Added to that sunblocker, which unfortunately always ends up on food or in mouth in small amounts. Took nearly two weeks until my tongue was healed, my taste was fully back and my mouth didn't feel waxy anymore.

Hi, I know your issue! It might be too late, but I also have this issue right now. I saw you're taking d-mannose for a UTI -- I am too! I am almost certain this is the cause of the issue.

Potentially this will be my last update to this thread because my symptoms are almost gone. At least they are subtle enough that I can ignore them ;)

Each day over this weekend my mouth felt less and less waxy. I can live with this remaining feeling, even if it never gets better from here, but I am hopeful if the healing-curve continues I will have a full recovery. For anyone reading this post in the future, here are my takeaways:
    • My symptoms were a chronic and persistent symptomology that lasted nearly 3-weeks
    • The major symptom was a slick, waxy, fatty coating in my mouth that never went away morning or night. It would intensify when I consumed certain foods, but it never subsided.
    • Onset was sudden about 30hrs after oral surgery (2 minor cavities composite filled on the left side top and bottom) with lidocaine. I have never had cavities filled, and these were my first lidocaine shots ever.
    • There was no alteration to the taste of the food, and I had no other discomfort or sensation in my mouth. If you would like to replicate the sensation of what I felt, find some completely flavorless liquid dish soap and pour a good tablespoon in your mouth.
    • There was no change in my saliva output or viscosity, according to several dental specialists, and my mouth was not dry.
    • I don't have GER and have never had digestive or hormonal issues.
    • I have no allergies. Benadryl had no impact whatsoever, so it is doubtful this was a histamine response
    • I eat super spicy and high-temperature food all the time--never had this symptom. I also had no burns at the time.
    • I added no new foods, supplements, home care products, soaps, dishes, personal care, hormones or lifestyle changes within 6-weeks prior to the onset of this condition. Trust me, I scrutinized EVERYTHING :expressionless:
    • A few months ago I began eating beef after 27-years as a vegetarian. After eating beef several times the past few weeks with no change in my symptoms, I don't believe now there was a correlation with the beef.
    • During the first 8-days there was no change--the sensation was persistent and made eating and drinking extremely unpleasant
    • The next week the symptoms seemed to lessen, but almost to a plateau. It felt about 40% better but stayed at this baseline intensity--increasing only when I would consume certain foods (see other posts for food lists).
    • After 15 days the symptoms are now nearly nonexistent, but there is a slightly slick-fatty feeling on the roof of my pallet, like the fatty feel you get after eating homemade full-cream icecream
    • The oral pathologist feels like it was a reaction to the lidocaine, like a chemical burn to some nerves, and said it may take 3-months but I should fully recover.
The most bizarre and concerning part of this whole experience is that I couldn't find anyone (ANYONE!) on the internet who has ever experienced these symptoms. And this is what has me skeptical that it was lidocaine or an allergy or anything that is super common for millions of other people to experience. The symptoms were so intense, I can't imagine that someone else with this experience would not post about it someplace on the web. The few old dead posts where "waxy or fatty" feeling in a mouth was mentioned have to do with GERD, and on one website Burning Mouth Syndrome, and I had no other shared symptoms with either of these conditions.

So I am feeling way better, but it still an unsolved mystery!

Please, if you are reading this post and you are experiencing these symptoms, please reply to this post here and PM me about your situation. I want to collect as much data as I can to avoid ever having to experience this in the future!

A deep and sincere thanks to everyone in the MFP Community who wrote in to support me during this time. This was terribly scary and it was so helpful to have all of your support, curiosity, encouragement, and guidance!

    Warmest regards,
    J

Hi I'm also currently experiencing this same condition on my tongue. It feels like I have margarine/butter on the top of my tongue. I really don't know what this is. So did you fix the issue? I'd be glad if you could reply ASAP

My sister has had this for over a year know, she has been to PC doctor,Primary Dentist,Oral Surgeon. They treated it as thrush with antibiotic rinse.
She was just in the emergency room because her symptoms have gotten worse,to the point she couldn't eat, only able to drink liquids.Had been vomiting&really bad slimy diarrhea. Was sent home told it is thrush, but no white spots on tongue or throat, had to go back to ER was getting shakes real bad, this time they did bloodwork,EKG, chest xray.
Another doctor says it isn't thrush, but he thinks it is more of a bacterial infection,to go see a oral surgeon.
She tells him i have been to my doctor,my dentist, and a oral surgeon and they say it is thrush lol,but I have no spots in my mouth, just oily, slimmy, waxy paste, with red swollen gums that burn in my mouth and the meds given none has helped seems to make it worse.
He then asked have they done a biopsy or done a culture (check cells under microscope)she says no,but you would think after all this time they would of had.The doc says you would think, looking puzzled. He said he didn't think it was mouth cancer, but really couldn't rule ot out. But said he felt it was more of a bacterial infection. No wonder she had been so sick this past year, she has missed so many family get togethers.
I will give an update after she sees oral surgeon again. Please keep my sis in your prayers, and prayers for you all that are going through this as well.

Hi! I had a similar phenomenon happen to me regarding unusual sensations in the mouth. Im a 40yr old male and this accident happened in early 2012. Hopefully the original poster, jshabatu, will check this thread again. My experiences are also of oily, greasy, and other types of synthetic feelings in the roof of my mouth, tongue and cheeks; in the mucous membranes. However, my occurrences began manifesting after I Mistakenly mixed two hair products: a conditioner and an aroma oil. These both were from the same product box. I will be posting much more on my occurrences and flare-ups in the next several days, though wanted to initiate my post on this rare phenomenon of smell and taste perception in hope that others will discover this thread and additional postings I'll be making on other sites.

Same here! Noticed it first when I was eating some seed mix a few days ago and thought it was a dodgy batch but have just experienced it again while eating a pot of rice pudding... 39 yo female, 155 lbs, no recent anaesthetic but I do suffer from some food allergies... No bad taste, just oily sensation in my mouth. Seems sporadic at the moment so hopefully it doesn't develop further. Very strange.

Oh my!!! Such a relief to finally find others who know what I’m talking about! I’ve been dealing with this waxy tongue feeling for weeks only to be stumped by its cause! No new meds for me! No dental or medical procedures either! I thought thrush too although my tongue is not white? This feels just miserable! If anyone has any updates besides it being a medicinal or anesthesia cause, please share! In the meantime, making a dental/doctor appt. on Monday! I really just assumed it would go away, but not even close! Thanks all!

I’ve got it too. Randomly started after a mouth infection. I wonder if some products used to treat that has caused it?? Not a nice feeling at all.

Hello Pablo, I too have been suffering with problem with my mouth for a long time and this affects my eating and it has become a chore to eat instead of a pleasure. I turned sixty-seven years old this past Saturday. I wanted to share because I feel for your mother. I have been to many doctors, dentists and allergist with no help. I do believe only now this is a disruption of the oral bacteria in the mouth. This can happen with age or after a long course of antibiotics. I am going to begin a course of probiotics tonight. If you can get probiotics for your mother and give them to her every night at bedtime this might help. She could even get her appetite back. If she has trouble with capsules you can open them and put them in a glass of water. It is important she takes them at night and not eat or drink anything after until the morning. I will pray for you and your precious mother tonight. God Bless you, Marie
