September 2017 Running Challenge

Hey, I am new this forum, but I am in. I am thinking about running a 5K in October, and this might be the motivation I need to push me to do it. I cannot really give myself a goal, I would like to run 5K a day to train, but it has been a few weeks since I ran so I might build myself up to 5K over a couple of weeks. My knee started to hurt in July and I now have to run with a knee brace. But I will post some updates as they come along. Thank you for having this challenge!11

I have my first marathon on October 8th (same day as @ariceroni's first marathon...woo!) in Long Beach CA, so this month will actually see me cut back some mileage for the taper. Adding everything up, and if I stick to my plan, then my goal will be 175 miles. October is starting to feel very near, and I'm starting to feel completely stoked. Bring it on!11

Hello, September runners!!
Same mileage goal as last month: 250.
Hit it on the nose for August, and should hit it on the nose for September if my running schedule adds up how I think it does (admittedly, I am quite poor at math though).
Upcoming Races:
Sept 16: Baker's Revenge 10 mile trail race
Oct 8: Steamtown Marathon
Oct 22: Perfect 10 miler
Nov 5: Princeton Half Marathon (pacer)
5 -
Came in a couple of miles shy in August, but got pretty close.
September goal: Finish up Hal Higdon's Novice 5K plan as prep for my 10/2 race. I hope to beat my 20-yr old PR of 29:32.
September mileage: 65 miles
Races:
Oct: Apple Harvest 5k
Nov: Movember 5k
Dec: Mitten Run 5k6 -
I am considering somewhere around 7603200 inches is where I will end up in September.9
-
@PastorVincent -120 is a much more finite/round/even/whatever mileage than I was expecting to see after I did that math...1

I made a little goal for myself taking into consideration that I will need a couple of weeks to get back into the grove.2 -
@PastorVincent would that be 120 miles then2
-
@Halonsk hehe I guess I could have picked an irrational number since when I stop and think about this hobby it is pretty irrational!
@Marissaxzxzxz - no, it is 7603200 inches cause sometimes I just have to tell myself "Just go another inch, and then do it again."6 -
September goal for me is 95 miles... fewer running days for me than August where I reached just over 100.

Hi all! I've been absent from the thread for a lot of the summer, but I'm still very much running...just not a lot of time to check in/comment here. I'm going to try to check in occasionally here in September though because I miss chatting with you all. I added up my mileage for August and I hit 160 on the nose tonight. September is going to be a very tough and busy month for me as I have a TON going on and I'm just 6 weeks out from the Columbus Marathon, so I'll be trying to cram in miles when I can.
My mileage goal for September is 185, however my main priority is to get through September and heading into taper healthy and injury free. My body has taken a bit of a beating this summer and I've been fighting as much as I can to stay healthy. With the higher temps and very high humidity, my asthma has been one of my main detriments. I also have experienced some various aches/pains on lower right leg that I injured earlier this year, but staying on top of my PT exercises and making smart decisions in regards to mileage/pace hopefully has that under control. Unfortunately, my pace has suffered quite a bit this summer, but I still believe that my goal to PR my next marathon is possible (even if it's just by a few minutes). I surprised myself and PRed at a half marathon last weekend, so I have a bit of confidence back!8 -
Finished August with 128 miles, going for 135 miles in September. Also, will try to be more social with everyone here Let's do this!
Upcoming races:
September 24 – Bachman Valley Half Marathon. Goal – to beat my previous PR of 1:50
October 22 – Gettysburg Blue-Gray Half Marathon.
November 5 –Gettysburg Battleground Half Marathon. Goal – to enjoy this local run I was not aware of!

September 2017 Goals:
A month of Zen Mode, rest, relaxation, and easy running
24 km on my 24 month Runniversary Sept 22
Events:
Aug 27 – Ran my first marathon – 42.2 km
Oct 15 – Melbourne Half Marathon – 21.1 km
Nov 5 – The Bloody Long Walk 35 km

Ooh, another first marathoner in October like @ariceroni and @garygse ! Which marathon are you doing and when?
I'm taking names here! #ocd3 -
Because who doesn't love Mark Remy and an opinion on running advice
ya, i'm left unsupervised at work again
Awesome, @Elise4270
QUOTE:- Whenever I’m tempted to offer unsolicited advice, I ask myself, What happens if I don’t speak up? What’s at stake here? Usually the answer is “Not much.” If silence could result in pain or injury, then yes, I’ll say something. Otherwise, I keep my thoughts to myself.
- I try to embrace self-doubt, wondering whether my own information may be outdated or just plain wrong. Remember: Much like no one thinks he’s a bad driver, no one thinks he gives bad advice. We all have our blind spots.
- Dogma is dangerous. So when I do give advice—which almost always is after someone has asked for it—I bookend it with disclaimers and disclosures. Phrases like “In my own limited experience” or “Depends on who you ask” or “You’ll want to experiment and see what works for you” go a long way toward setting the proper tone.
END QUOTE
Good stuff!
That came along just when I was wondering. Actually still wondering. It's tricky - the person might suffer pain, or injury, or both, and/or be over-training, or they could just suffer a lot.
Hmm, they probably are aware of that, though, thinking aloud. Hard to say one is concerned without upsetting someone.5 -
I failed to meet goal of 119 miles last month, but still will challenge myself with 143 mile goal.
Upcoming Races:
9/9/17 - Wabash Trace HM
10/21/17 - Oregon Trail Run HM3 -
In for 100 miles again. Work is still crazy, soccer keeps us moving, and we try to sail on the weekends, but hopefully I'll manage to get it in.
Two races this month. Our church's 5K to benefit homeless teens and a trail half marathon. I had hope to finish in the top 3 for my age group this year in the 5K (very small race) but with my lack of running, I'll be lucky if I finish faster than last year.
The trail half marathon I'm running as part of a team from work. Our employer is paying part of the fee and getting us matching shirts. And, it's sponsored by a craft brewery so beer after the race!! I'm not really training for it, and I'm not going to taper. I'll try to do my best, but I won't do the things leading up to the race to get my best time possible, if that makes sense.
@MobyCarp just saw you're down again. so sorry to hear that!!
@Elise4270 89 mile goal!!! sweet!! So glad to see your mileage up there!

I am in again and setting a goal of 100 miles. I am hoping it a) cools down, b) work settles down and c) I can get some running in around the wedding at the end of the month2
-
@Dcorrick - I use mapmyrun too. I keep thinking I will change to Strava but there are things about MMR that I like so I just keep using it.
@garygse - The LongBeach Marathon was my first real race in 2012 and I had only been running 8-9 months. I ran the HM with a friend who was an experienced runner. She told me - 'since you are running 12 miles in training, I signed you up for a HM with me'. It was awesome! Look for the tugs spraying water out in the harbor - they were so pretty!!

@JessicaMcB Wow amazing goal!!
I am thinking for 170 km this month. Lets hope that the good weather will continue so I can keep swimming in schedule. And I have 2 raves this month which is awesome!!
Take care all3 -
I'm in again this month will try to improve on last months measly 34.70km. I'm going to include my walk to and from work each day which totals a daily average of 3.50km (1.75km each way).4
-
Holy humidity!! 10k this morning 32 c (90f) 100% humidity. So humid I could not see more than 15 metres in front of me!! Had to have a few walk breaks, it was tough!! Week 1 of half marathon training down!!7
-
I hit my goal of 40 miles last month, so aim this month is to keep it pretty similar, as my schedule will be changing quite a bit and I'll have to work harder to fit running into my routine.
So 45 miles in September
01/09 - 3.67 miles
Total 3.67/45 miles
Upcoming races:
03/09 - Salford City 10k
19/11 - Movember 10k
26/11 - Wilmslow 10k

So, I really bombed out of August, so much so that I am concerned a little bit for my first 5K on the 9th, but I will run it nonetheless. Long story short, my mother was diagnosed with dementia (none of us are sure why we didn't pick up on it earlier - weird) and her living situation called for change. Spent the first two weeks coping with that, then the third traveling to CA to get mom and bring her back to the Midwest where we can give her more company/supervision. I think I only got in maybe 10 miles for all of August - I didn't even bother to log anything In my spreadsheet. Probably should have tried to run more to help with the coping, but it just didn't happen.
Anywho, I'm doing better now and mom is settling in nicely so I will set a goal for September of 30 miles, because I want to be ultra conservative and I don't like missing goals. Progress in my karate was also hindered over August, but getting it back on track now too.
I really like these monthly challenge threads! One of my favorite months of the year in this part of the world, I hope everyone has a great September and accomplishes whatever they set out to do!
9/8 Happy birthday to me!
9/9 Danville IN. Half Marathon & 5K - my first 5K
