@girlinahat how cool is that. I love that they care so much for their elderly that they would do something so awesome. Wow. Thanks @PastorVincent and @Elise4270 My family used to say I'd get into heaven with my shoes on for taking care of Gram, but spending that time with her was it's own reward.2

I also use Aquaphor (or the generic equivalent thereof). Cheaper, works fine. I also apply it to active chaffing sores to protect them from rubbing in my street clothes.
Not heard of Aquaphor before - but it looks like it is made for healing more than for preventing? Sounds like you use it for both?
Correct. It's like a thick Vaseline. For sores or cuts, I sometimes mix it with Vitamin E oil and/or antibiotic ointment in my palm before applying. Seems to heal quicker with less scarring. I just keep a tube in my gym bag.0 -
@skippygirlsmom I was very glad to read that, though I damn near cried at work, thank you, that little paragraph helps a lot.
So sorry to get things off topic everyone. Back to your normally scheduled program...3 -
@sliedur the thing I love about this group is we support each other through all things, not just running related things.7

So, I really bombed out of August, so much so that I am concerned a little bit for my first 5K on the 9th, but I will run it nonetheless. Long story short, my mother was diagnosed with dementia
My sympathies @Sliedur . I started on this weight-loss/fitness venture in the middle of dealing with both parents' dementia. Taking over their lives, selling their home, relocating them, etc., etc. had me wondering how I was going to survive with my sanity. Ultimately, I decided what went in my mouth and what I did with my body were the only things I actually had control over. Good for you for getting ANYTHING done while that was going on. I'm 4 years into it now, and the big hills are still ahead of me.

I haven't set a target yet I bought some new running trainers today and took them for a short trial around the local park. I didn't put my insoles in and boy did I regret it as I had shooting pain on the sides of my feet. Note to self - put the insoles in LOL. I'm also going to include my walk to and from work to the carpark. I park 1.75km away as it's cheap and the walk wakes me up in the morning.
1 Sept run 2.85km plus 3.50km walk Today's total 6.35km (fitbit shows I've actually completed 9.12km)1 -
BTW - PRO TIP:
If you are doing strength training and you are taking cold meds that have pain killers in them... you might want to take it easier than you feel you can do because at some point those pain killers will wear off....11 -

Because life is running related8 -
@skippygirlsmom - your paragraph on loving someone with dementia is spot on. It did make me cry though. We went through it a bit with my MIL who I was very close to but hers was caused mostly by a stroke. It is such a hard and difficult disease to deal with. I only hope it doesn't happen to me so my daughter doesn't have to deal with it! Would you mind if I copied your paragraph to share with some friends who are also dealing with a loved one in a similar situation?
@Elise4270 - you are absolutely right - life is running related!2 -
Regarding parents with dementia...
On the upside: my mother says I've lost weight every time I see her...10 -
I'm going to aim for 60 miles but will be happy if I can hit 50 as its another busy month.
I ordered new runners today Brooks Adrenaline 17's. They probably won't arrive until next Friday at least, an Irish thing. Mine have 439 miles on them and badly worn to the outside of heel so time for a new pair.
Healthy running everyone!
01/09 4.53 miles

I'm retuning!
Not going to put 200mi just yet, but I guess I'll say 50mi to dust off some stuff.
Currently 182lb so I'm not really anywhere near my times/paces at 140-150. We'll see.
Might just start a random program on Monday to get some structure. I'm also still powerlifting randomly too.
Easy 5 yesterday.
Total: 0/50mi

Still nursing that weird pain in my leg so missed my goal for August but in for 75 miles in September. First run of the month will be Sunday.
@Sliedur, so sorry to hear about your mom. Hugs to you.
@skippygirlsmom, thanks for sharing your experience.

I use the generic equivalent of Aquaphor for dry hands in the winter, sometimes mixed with a water-based hand lotion. The active ingredient (41%) is white petrolatum, i.e. petroleum jelly or vaseline.
I might also note that using the anti-chafing substance of your choice - Body Glide, Aquaphor, Vaseline, whatever - seems a reasonable thing to try for a chest strap HRM that feels like it might rub. It's hard to be more specific than that, because I have 2 chest strap HRMs. The one that came with the 630 needs no lubricant. Nothing I've tried is sufficient to totally elimnate rubbing with the one that came with the 620; but I havent' tried Body Glide.0 -
Non-running check in: 2nd PT visit today. The wobble board didn't fatigue my PTT as much today as it did Wednesday. The PT had me do 10 minutes on the exercycle; given how well that went, I may try to get outside on a real bike Sunday. Before then, I have to live through being a road marshall for a 12K race tomorrow morning. I expect to spend an extended period out of the boot for that, and I'll see how it goes.
After PT, I went to packet pick up for Oak Tree Half. I will DNS the race, but there was a nice pint glass, an oval race sticker, and a jar of organic peanut butter in the packet. I recalled from last year that the packet pick up swag was better than the age group winner swag.
That put me close to a running store. I've been wearing Asics 33-M2's as my walking shoes. They're near end of useful life, and while I am wearing the left shoe and a boot on my right foot they will wear unevenly. The left shoe is already more grass stained than the right, because I need this particular shoe for an even platform when I mow the lawn. I went online to order another pair, but they are discontinued.
So, off to the running store. Explain the issue to the guys there, I'm looking for something similar. End up with Mizuno Wave Rider 20s, which will sit in their box until I'm sure I'm done with the boot:
I expect this pair to be my next pair of regular walking and social wear shoes.8 -
9/1/17 Rest day
I think I'm going for a scaled back goal of 95 miles for September due to travel and taper before my Oct 1 HM. I may revise that if all is going well but I feel like last year I was exhausted going into my HM and I want to try to avoid that.5 -
@Elise4270 It's going to be a slower gradual buildup. Pace wise. Distance I can easily ramp up right now.
I'll just be running slower than Windows explorer on 1990s dial up
Planning on a Trail race in Nov. Steep 7miler with 2k vert. It's a fun trail.
Possibly something for later Oct.
LV rock n roll HM??
Definitely winter racing. Favorite running time of year. Just brainstorming right now.8 -

09/01/17 - 10 miles - mostly Z2
Summer Goal: Get my marathon pace below 9 minutes.
Official Marathon PR: 4:11:28
Next Races (more as I find them):
10/14/2017 - Stop, Drop, and Run - Fireman style obstacle course - 5km
05/06/18 - Pittsburgh Marathon - aiming for sub four hours.
First run of September! Starting off well. Full report later... have to rescue my son whose bike broke somewhere out there...

Lol I'll just say 7:45 feels like 5:30/mi right now. Lotta work to do. But it'll get done
I saw mid 10s on the TM yesterday1 -

I saw the run you posted. Impressive for not running, er taking a break from running. Beats my best any day!1 -
@skippygirlsmom That doctor was a wise person and his advice about Dementia ultimately helped you adjust on the fly to the situation. My Grandmother had similar issues and I was to young/naïve to understand how to handle it. Live in the moment/year that your relative is living is probably the best description/idea I have ever heard. I could have asked her questions about the early years on the Homestead and recorded them. Would have learned so much.

@shanaber I can't wait to go back to CA for the race and to meet friends back there! Those tugs sure do add a little something to the harbor.
@Sliedur Sorry to hear about your mom, but glad to hear that things are somewhat better now and that she's settling in.
@5512bf Some may find this weird, but I don't actually have a formal training plan, other than following 80/20 running, and putting in miles, miles, and more miles. The more time on my feet I can put in, the better (for me, at least).
@zdyb23456 I agree with @PastorVincent with Body Glide. I used to use (and still do use) Sport Shield...very slick and slippery, but it didn't seem to work too well for longer runs in the heat (20+ miles), and while Body Glide feels thicker and has waaaay more friction to it compared to Sport Shield, it actually does the trick for my longer runs when applied liberally.
@skippygirlsmom Wow, that's a story that is both touching yet inspiring, in a strange kind of way. Thank you for sharing.
@lporter229 Thank you! Definitely not a veteran, but certainly no longer feel like the noob I was this time last year! Good luck with whatever outcome the Boston gods decide upon, and also to your husband with his training.
@Elise4270 About the only thing I'll qualify for is tying my own shoe laces...I've finally gotten that one nailed.
@PastorVincent Yeah, not looking forward to the flight back the next day!
@rodmelching Good luck with your race!1 -
Today was my usual Friday long run, with the first 15 miles being run at an easy pace, followed by the next five at a pace somewhere between MP and HMP, and then finally a couple of miles to cool things back down. All in all, not a bad start to September, but as Monday is a holiday here and will no-doubt throw off my schedule, I may be running some small distances over the weekend to make up for things.

I'm in for 30 miles of running with walk breaks. I don't even know if I can run a whole mile without stopping right now
9/1 - 1 mile run, 2 miles walk, 25 min strength5
