Apple cider vinegar

Hi,
Has anyone tried the apple cider vinegar diet? I heard it helps with weight loss and helps get rid of belly fat. I drink it with honey and water twice a day before my meals. Has anyone had success with this diet?

Apple Cider Vinegar does nothing for weight loss and doesn't get rid of belly fat, there is no scientific proof to back up the claims that are made to this effect.
A calorie deficit and some strength training is what will get rid of belly fat.

Unfortunately, science has been unable to replicate the weight loss results promised in the ubiquitous Bragg's marketing ("with the mother") but if it suppresses your appetite/makes you sick/makes you hate life it would probably work well. There may also be a placebo effect, where you might eat less or healthier because your twice-daily libation keeps your mind on track, or you overhaul your eating in general and ascribe it to the ACV.
I use it for several assorted things, but for weight loss, probably the best place is as a homemade honey-vinagrette on a salad (light on the honey and olive oil; heavier on the vinegar). That way you are getting the benefit of any unproven mystery magic, and also, you are getting a healthy dish with important micronutrients.
You might want to do a search on ACV on this site because there are probably a mozillion threads out there packed with all kinds of information and insights that you might find helpful.11 -
No need to do this because it has NOTHING to do with weight loss. And the honey is just added calories you could use for something else if you don't like honey.

When it comes to diets and weightloss stuff, I kinda go with the if it really worked EVERYONE would know about it and do it, it'd be all over the place. What really works is calories in/calories out.8

I have tried it. its okay6

Smell it and take a sip before thinking about trying to do it daily4

My thought on this is that it tastes so terrible you can't eat anything for while, thus you aren't eating as much. I consume quite a bit of ACV but always as part of a recipe or salad dressing. But drinking it sounds crazy.0

Actually, the calorie deficit is the ONLY thing that will get rid of belly fat. Strength training will make what is left look better.4 -

True, but assuming someone who is specifically looking to lose belly fat doesn't just want a smaller flabby belly that's a fairly important part of it.3 -
Great! Thanks everyone! I've only been on it for a few days and it does taste awful. I'm on a low calorie diet and also seeing a nutritionist and already lost 10 pounds. I was just curious about this diet since some people said it worked. Thanks for the advice2

It burned my throat and took a week to recover. I drank it with water for about a week. I now drink a glass of lemon water a half hour before meals instead.5

Congratulations on your loss--that is wonderful! If you are focusing on calories and getting good advice, it sounds like you are well positioned. I would also echo the above comments on strength training, not just for your belly, but for overall shapeliness and muscle preservation as you lose weight.
And even if you (wisely, in my view) stop drinking it (we haven't gotten into the havoc it can wreak with your teeth enamal), make sure you put that bottle of ACV to good use in some awesome recipes!0 -
No. ACV won't do anything for weight loss. It is a good cure for the hiccups, and it is pretty tasty in a few recipes I have, but other than that it is a waste of your time.0

Since you now know that ACV does nothing, here is my favorite recipe so you can use up what you have left:
Spinach salad with hot bacon dressing:
Fresh spinach, washed
Hard cooked eggs, sliced
red onion, sliced
Fry a few slices of bacon until crispy and set aside. Add about 1 Tbl. sugar and 1 Tbl cider vinegar for each slice of bacon to the leftover bacon fat. Stir over low heat until the sugar is dissolved. Place the eggs and onions of top of the spinach. Crumble the bacon. Slowly pour over the hot dressing and toss. Serve immediately.7 -

That recipe is one of my favorites too... minus the red onion... minus the eggs... minus the spinach... hold the sugar and ACV5 -
It's good for coleslaw vinaigrette, too. The apple pairs well with cabbage. And I have a vegan cornbread recipe that recommends using ACV to curdle your nondairy milk of choice in place of the buttermilk a non-vegan version would likely call for.2
-
I also have a recipe for a cooked salad dressing (think mayo or miracle whip) that uses ACV and makes the BEST pasta salad, potato salad, and deviled eggs. It is an old one passed down through the generations (I am at least the 4th generation to make it).0

My earliest memory as a small child of say 4 or 5 is that I loved Apple Juice. So much so that when someone left a jar on the kitchen counter which I was just able to reach with a BEAUTIFUL picture of an apple on it, I grabbed it and took a swallow.. As all can imagine, it was NOT Apple juice.6

I think everyone is forgetting the health benefits of ACV with the mother. Helped me when I had a flu and it does wonders for acid reflux problems. Life isn't all about weightloss. I think just a spoon in water with a straw will protect the tooth enamel. Oh another thing! Add it at the end of your shampoo as a hair rinse and you'll be thanking me!20

Noone is forgetting that it has some health benefits, the OP specifically asked whether it was any good for weight loss and belly fat.4 -

No special health benefits. What little benefit there is can be traced to the mild acetic acid that is in all vinegars, and the "mother" does nothing.
It may have helped your acid reflux but there are just as many people for whom it makes the reflux worse.
Any acidify-er after a shampoo will help. It has nothing to do with the vinegar being made with apples, nor with the mother. In fact, blondes and those with dyed hair should avoid it because it can redden the color. They are better off with distilled (aka white) vinegar or something else like citric acid as a final rinse.3 -
I have not heard anything about a "ACV Diet" I would be interested in hearing more.
I used to drink it in the morning and at night. 1 tsp with a cup of water. I found that it was beneficial for me because the first thing in the morning I was doing something to focus on my goals and my health. I don't think there was a benefit besides starting/ending your day with that focus.
Now I take vitamins in the morning instead of the ACV.
It is great to use in recipes! Broccoli salad is so much better!3 -

I can't do ginger. Tried the ginger candy when I had a headache, it helped the headache but it was awful. Never again.0 -
