How long can a person survive without eating?

For 4 months? While pregnant? It was more like TPN (total parenteral nutrition). A person can live on TPN even if not bedridden. IDK if there is a limitation but people can live on it.14 -

Yes, I know glucose drips exist. I didn't have one.
Yes, I was in ketosis. I was tested every morning.
Yes, I do know what I'm talking about. I'm a nurse.
Yes, it did nearly kill me and my baby. I lost weight, my hair fell out, I developed gallstones and I was induced at 38 weeks because although I had been eating normally again for a few months at that point, my kidneys were not in great shape. I was being very closely monitored and was told that if it had gone on any longer, I would have had to have a pic line inserted to get some nutrition to me.
I'm not going to go as far as scanning my medical records to make my point because that would be ridiculous and my medical treatment wasn't the point of this post anyway. I would like people to reflect though on how they would feel if they shared a traumatic experience that had long term repercussions on their health and then had to read that various strangers don't believe them.
Oh for Pete sake. Why would you post such a traumatic event on the Debate Forum in a fitness site on the internet if you didn't expect people to question your premise?- No one here has ever heard of such a thing (as you can tell by the responses.)
- Google can answer the question.
Because...various strangers...25 -

That experience made me wonder - just how long is it possible to survive without food?
It depends on how much fat store you are holding on your body. I am currently fasting and am waaaay past the 3 day rule suggested above. PM me if you want more details as I am not allowed to talk about it in the public forums.
The 3 day rule was water, not food.7 -

So you eat and drink nothing for multiple days? Why?
Dry fasting is for Healing your body, stretch marks / injuries, digestive issues... Lots of benefits.
Oh. That's an...interesting idea.10 -

Well who knew. Stretch marks can be healed and aren't just scarring that fades with time and the body needing fuel to heal injuries? Pah! Just starve instead! Voila! MFP never fails.20 -

Is that before or after the dry fast?7 -
If stretch marks are scars, and you can heal them by starving yourself of food and water for three days (or more), does this mean I can also heal my huge knee surgery scar by doing the same thing? Can I also regenerate severed nerves at the same time? I sure would like to look better in shorts and not have my leg feel weird when I touch it!
Who cares if my blood sugar drops so low that I die? Beauty is ~pain~ and woo is magical.10 -

1 gallon before.... 1 gallon 4 days later. You'll live forever.4 -

Obvs. It's so simple.
But I'll lose my hair. I just cut off four-five inches, due to an overzealous bit of bleaching when I tried going pink (I loved the pink, but the dye I used was crap and couldn't get a good even dye and couldn't justify the cost of the upkeep). So my hair finally looks like my own again, and I don't want to lose it.2 -

Doesn't that spoil the dry fast?3 -

But it's going into your veins, not your stomach. And it's just saline, so it's not any nutrients. Just salt.5 -

If I'm going to spoil a dry fast, it's with rum.9 -

Pretty sure a dry fast means no water, as well as no food. Maybe salt is okay, but I'd assume no.
(And I was being funny, or trying to be.)2 -

Yes you were misinformed, because this science as not as flexible as you apparently think it is.
And yes, you still would have suffered kidney damage. Rhabdomyolysis is the breakdown and reabsorption of muscle tissue. It would've occurred from atrophy caused by being bed ridden.

a dry fast? really? have fun being dehydrated and we all know what dehydration and even severe dehydration can cause/do. the things someone will do because they think it will "help" them or heal them. stretch marks are there for life they fade but dont go away(surgery may not even help). as for digestive issues one would think not eating/drinking anything would cause the stomach issues especially when yo go back to eating and your body has to make more acid to break down food where it didnt have to produce much without food. oh while this is NOT a good idea for anyone its definitely not a good idea for those with diabetes.1

Just out of curiosity, if you're a nurse, why did you let them nearly kill you and your baby? It seems you were conscious during part of this process, why not speak up and ask not to be killed while they were testing you for ketosis?21

It's because this whole thing is in the "Things That Never Happened" file.19 -
and if in ketosis for that long couldnt a person end up with ketoacidosis even without having diabetes?1
-
Being in ketosis is not harmful, and I doubt they'd even monitor it for that specifically.
Not having nutrition for that long while pregnant is, and I don't think any hospital would do that -- they have too many concerns about liability, as well as it just making no sense at all.14 -

I mean, after four months, wouldn't she have died from some sort of nutritional deficiency if nothing else?7 -

If she had an elevated cortisol level, probably. Not before she died from the electrolyte imbalance, though.
For the record (other posters), I wasn't implying that ketosis is harmful, merely that it would is have been an effect of the treatment she described, and she'd failed to mention it.0 -
It only took a few days of eating nothing in the hospital for me to be put on TPN8
