@shanaber way to race! I ended up hospitalized after Edmonton Marathon and it was effing electrolytic imbalance of all things (which as a keto runner I should have figured but sometimes I'm an idiot). It can be the weirdest stuff fueling wise. Hope you're feeling better!
So for whatever reason Jessica's life brain and her running brain were out of sync because I forgot that it was our sixth wedding anniversary this morning in my run planning even though I didn't forget our anniversary (if that makes sense at all?). So I guess long run is out for this week, I know, I suck! Ran this little bit to get cauliflower for dinner tonight.

In other news my trail (Saucony Nomad TR), road (Saucony Guide 10) and alternate (Saucony Hurricane ISO 2) shoes are all simultaneously toast. Really hoping the massive amount of money our bank statement tells me Ben dropped at Sportchek was on shoes. I need to get Saucony backed lol

26 degrees at start of my long run this morning, which is coldest it has been this winter so far. I know that this is nothing compared to the frigid temps some of y’all run in but for us southerners it qualifies as bonechilling. I really enjoy running in the cold more than I thought I would. @juliet3455 and @shanaber Skip took pictures of the damage to both cars but not to the surrounding area or a picture of the scene. When I got there and cop was talking to me, we have all the info about the lady who hit her including her insurance, name and address it was all on the police report. I decided over the weekend to call my insurance company again and have them deal with her and her insurance company. I don't have the time or bandwidth to deal with it at all. I personally think it's BS that they contacted me and not my insurance company. Well they actually told me they started a claim with my insurance company my insurance company no they did not. When I told the woman I wouldn't allow them to talk to Skip she told me it was time to let her be an adult. I said she's 17 she doesn't need to adult yet. Screw off.

@RunsOnEspresso Great job on your trail race!
@sarahthes - I hear you on the short days and mood. I take Vitamin D every day since I totally bottomed out on my levels a couple of years ago when I had a parathyroid tumor. I'm sure the D helps some but it's still rough getting through the winter. I've thought about trying the SAD lights. Shortest day is not too far away and then we start working the other way (slowly). Hang in there!
@abutcher2122 I do better when running to music too, when I run alone. Keeps me from thinking about the actual running too much.
@hjeppley Great job on your 5k race and on your 14 mile run! You may have mentioned already, but I see you are doing a winter trail night marathon - sounds interesting! Where is this? And how late at night?
@ddmom0811 - Now that's a road trip! A thirteen hour drive makes me want to cry, I used to do 14 to see my family in the midwest but said never again a few years ago. If only I thought to run in every state along the way! Great job, you crazy lady! I hope it was fun, sounds like you really had to work for it between the driving and finding one mile routes. I could totally see having someone along who made it too intense would be stressful, and too Amazing Race-like.
@cameronheel - awesome job on your age group win for your 5k!! Wow, great time.
@amymoreorless - ouch! Could you have sprained your ankle or is more on your foot? I would stop running and get that checked out.
@shanaber - good job finishing your HM, and that's some nice swag! It does sound like not eating well (plus not feeling great to start with?) could be what's making you feel so badly after. Have you tried replenishing electrolytes with sports drinks, etc? Might help.

Today is 55% of the month and I'm at 65% of the goal.
Got a work project finished up today, finally, and I am so relieved. It took a bit longer than expected so I ended up running on the treadmill at the Y (already dark). I really didn't want to run, I would have much rather just gone home and ate as I was really hungry, but I'm glad I did of course. And now, pumpkin ice cream as a reward.
This week is going to be a challenge to fit running in, so we'll see how it goes. Tomorrow I have a run date with my best running buddy, and we haven't run together since Thanksgiving so lots to catch up on. At least one run will happen!

Today was a great day over all. My husband sang at church. I had a wonderful 9 mile run. It was perfect weather. 69°F and sunny with a light west wind. Today is my daughter's birthday. It is hard for me to believe that 25 years ago I became a parent for the first time. We had a good phone conversation since she lives about 3 1/2 hours away. Then my husband and I went out so to eat so now I am just sitting on the couch feeling stuffed.
@skippygirlsmom I can't believe youbate having so much trouble from the fender bender. Skip is lucky to have you.

Shoes = Boxing Day madness especially if you are aced on size & model, You should ask your shoe store about the Saucony rep doing a shoe deal for you for the Ultra's after your amazing finish at your first Ultra.
5km Santa Shuffle today along the paved Riverbank trails, with the required Santa Toque. There is a long standing tradition that someone does the event in Shorts - Not Tights and wind pants - Plain old Summer shorts. That person may have vaguely resembled me this year. +6C and sunny so the weather was more than warm enough for shorts. The Trails - not so much, covered in 3 different types of ice.
Thick crunchy ice that is fragile and gives great traction as it breaks up when your foot lands.
Thick Heavy White ice, No breaking it but it's rough and uneven so actually gives decent footing.
Black Ice A super thin layer of ice created by the melt/freeze cycle. Quite often it looks like clear paved trail - then your foot lands and goes skidding off on a wild ride. No one fell but there were a few wobbles. At one point I just left the Trail and hit the snow beside it for safety, following someone else's footprints.

@juliet3455 Black Ice is the reason I stopped driving in winter and moved to Phoenix. Nothing like hitting a patch on a freeway, spinning, and going backward down a freeway to give you a serious scare. Fun times.2

So... if any of you are doing a long road trip I recommend the crazy thing I did today! I drove from Orlando (home) to just outside DC area (approx 13 hours normal drive). I decided I would run 1 mile in GA, SC, NC and VA. I had to throw out the VA run because it was dark and the 1 mile run stops took a lot longer than I thought they would. I figured -- 10 min miles... and that it would take 10 mins. Ummmm.. no. The first stop was more like 45 mins because I had to change, organize everything (HRM, figure out where to park, etc.). And I moved my car after the first spot, because it felt sketchy leaving it with obviously everything in it... as I set out to run.
In GA I stopped at a gas station and just ran down the road 1/2 mile out and back. When I got back to the car I felt AMAZING! Runner's high after one mile? No, but just felt so great.
Then, in South Carolina I stopped at a rest stop which was much smaller than I thought it would be. I had to run some crazy twists to get a mile in. I felt like an idiot and almost asked some people "does your dog need running?" I mean, I don't really care anymore (after 50, you basically don't give an f what people think anymore ... am I right?) But, still, I am sure people probably were commenting that I must have been anorexic or an exercise freak. Again, who cares. So I get back in the car and felt AMAZING again. That stop was probably 30 mins.
In North Carolina I had trouble figuring out where to stop and I really debated skipping it because I could see that these 1 miles were taking way longer than I had anticipated. When I needed gas I saw a Cracker Barrel so parked in front of it and then went in to change, before and after. That run was really weird -- down a sketchy road behind the restaurant, and then through a truck sales lot where I was surprised to see there was a band playing for some sale they were having! This stop was the quickest ... maybe 20 mins. Again, got back in the car and felt AMAZING.
Of course, I arrived at my moms 2 hours later than I had expected, hungry, with a full load of laundry. She's used to me coming here and doing laundry every day, but not arriving with a full load, LOL.
I usually have such a sore driving leg by the time I get to her house when I drive straight through but the running really helped! I don't think this would be do-able in the summer, when I usually visit. I'd have to shower each time. In this 40-45 degree weather, I had to change, and would have liked to shower, but I wasn't drenched in sweat. I will have to think about it, because it was really fun.
I'm not telling anyone but y'all (and whomever sees it on Strava), because it just sounds crazy, lol.
When I drive home next Saturday my daughter will be with me... and I hope to do it all again! LOL I will have a routine down this time though! And her BF will be with us so at least he can watch the car. That was what I hated ... my purse, laptop, EVERYTHING, was in the car and anyone could just watch me run away from it. I always parked in busy areas, but it just takes a second for someone to walk up with a brick and smash the window. Saw that happen once at the high school where I teach. I had my stuff hidden, but still, it's pretty obvious when I run away with nothing in my hands...
Tomorrow I sleep in (I HOPE AND PRAY! -- I keep waking up between 2-3 and can't sleep!) and then I will run ... however far I feel like and I need to keep a slow pace. This cool weather just makes me go fast!

I am doing the half marathon (there are 1/4 marathon and full marathon options too). It is in a big park on the west side of Indianapolis and starts at 6 pm. There is an analog race in the middle of the summer too (Fire and Ice Series). I need to practice running trails with my headlamp soon! Not much time left to practice and I don't really think I am supposed to be in the park near me after dark. Any tips from those of you who've done such a thing? Or from you ultra runners who've run through the night?1 -
Just some water walking and PT today. Legs feeling a bit better this morning after 14 mi yesterday. Ate all the food yesterday after the run. Street tacos for lunch and yummy Ethiopian food for dinner.

@juliet3455 loving that you rocked the shorts! I wish Edson had more than the two races it hosts per year, your group seems to have so much fun!
@hjeppley I personally love running in the pitch dark and honestly train more with my lamp on than off at this point. My biggest suggestion would be to run an area you know that has sharp curves to see how you handle and to test the lamp throw.
A master's ultra runner I know is very fond of telling people that if they experience any kind of motion sickness that they should use two lamps- one head mount, one waist. She is adament this reduces shake enough so you don't puke.

@amymoreorless Good luck at he doc with the foot. I had a similar injury after 2 half's a month apart.
Mine was tendonosis. A few weeks in a boot and only running when it didn't hurt was the protocol. I hope it's a quick recovery!1 -
@JessicaMcB Thanks for the suggestions. I think I am going to have to look into a second lamp based on your tip. Any suggestions for the waist one? I am the kind of person who gets dizzy driving in the snow, so I am guessing once I get into the woods with my lamp I am going to need it.

@amymoreorless - I've had a similar swelling on and off. But I can walk and it's not painful particularly. I call it my second ankle... which I know isn't brilliant.
Did my glute workout this morning - but modified since my Mom doesn't have the equipment I have at home. Did lots of pushups too!
Then set out for a 1-2 mile run and it ended up being 2. Going to go long tomorrow!

12/1 - 5 miles. Still loving the warmer than average weather!
12/2 - 5 miles.
12/3 - Busy / rest day.
12/4 - 5.15 miles. This weather is nuts! It was 63° at 4:45 a.m.
12/5 - 4.75 miles. 35° temperature drop in 24 hours...Brrr!
12/6 - 3.5 'mill miles, then upper body weights / abs.
12/7 - Unplanned rest day. Didn't sleep...ZZZZZ
12/8 - 3.5 on the treadmill, then weights and abs.
12/9 - 4.5 windy miles.
12/10 - 3 'mill miles, then extremely short upper body weights.
12/11 - 5 miles.
12/12 - Rest day.
12/13 - 5 windy miles.
12/14 - 5 miles. Colder by 15° than yesterday, but way more comfortable because no *kitten* wind!
12/15 - 4 miles. Shorter than usual because my wife wouldn't stop talking so I could get out the door to run
12/16 - Unplanned rest day. Just lazy.
12/17 - Another rest day...still lazy...and a bit hungover
12/18 - 5.1 miles.

@skippygirlsmom Good for you telling the woman she cannot talk to Skip. You can tell her that from now on she is to talk only with your insurance company. You filed an accident report and so did she. You can check with your insurance company on what the recommend and how they see this going forward. If she talks with Skip there is no telling what claims she may make. I can't remember if you filed a claim that said the woman was at fault.(If you didn't that may work against you. In these cases it's good to put down all the facts in your favor and let the other side prove anything that isn't.)
4 miles this am though I really wanted to stay in bed. Thighs are feeling the 28 miles I put on the road Thursday-Saturday last week. Looking to make my goal this month.

Hope everyone with injuries on this thread improves quickly. It is good to hear because it inspires me to not be lazy to take the time to warm up/cool down/stretch and be careful as a new runner..

@hjeppley keeping it real here, while there are awesome waist lamps you can buy (@MNLittleFinn has one!) my cheap *kitten* just slides a head lamp down and it does the same thing. I also have taken a BD lamp apart recently and mounted the light to the chest strap of my hydration pack.

I just bought a two pack of lights on Amazon. I am planning to clip one to the front of my hydration vest. I tested it out my front door and it helped light up the sidewalk.1

* I run with the CT10K app running as well as Nike (and Spotify & CharityMiles, too!) This am, I heard Nike count down, yet somehow, it shut off @ the same time! Of course, I ran a different route, so this was an estimate, but pretty much in the ball park from what I saw from this morning's run.
I do have to say, I have seen this thread for a while, but never thought I was "up to par" to even think to join. Even now, I look through some of the posts here & see the mileage some people rack up & I feel a bit of a beginner, splashing about in the kiddie pool when the others are gliding in the deep end! lol However, this does help keep me accountable, and that, coupled with my desire to complete the CT10K program means that this is the most I have run in a month in several years!9 -

I have to tell you that the feeling kind of never goes away. Despite what others here say, I still feel like a newbe a lot of the time.1
