@PastorVincent I do multiple because I am an awkward height and head lamps, no matter how they're angled, won't give me the amount of throw I need on their own. It's rare I use all three (it would have to be super high tech terrain at night), it's usually just chest and waist on a normal day.

Welcome @dreamer12151 ! Remember, we were all beginners once :)

I do have to say, I have seen this thread for a while, but never thought I was "up to par" to even think to join. Even now, I look through some of the posts here & see the mileage some people rack up & I feel a bit of a beginner, splashing about in the kiddie pool when the others are gliding in the deep end! lol However, this does help keep me accountable, and that, coupled with my desire to complete the CT10K program means that this is the most I have run in a month in several years!

I have to tell you that the feeling kind of never goes away. Despite what others here say, I still feel like a newbe a lot of the time.

Preach. I still have trouble with that and any reference to my "speed". @MNLittleFinn is a boss though, a newb no more :p

What is the advantage of belt vs chest vs head?

I hate having a lamp on my head???? Also lower angle makes rocks/roots cast longer shadows, making them more 3D when it's like 2300 and your in zombie mode.....

I hate the bouncing light, make me disoriented. Love the idea of a belt lamp.

    32 miles.

    12/2 - 4.5 miles
12/6 - 1.3 mile - ran till it was too dark. Our roads aren't so great, don't want to fall on my face. Looking forward to Saturday. the weather should be perfect.
12/9 - the weather WAS perfect! I went out to run another 4 miles and ran 6.5. (It was downhill the last two miles, so after I got up that hill..... so 12.3Miles this week.
    12/14 1.5 miles
    12/16 4.5 miles.... 18.30 so far...

Been encouraging(bribing) my 18 yr old son to start running/walking. Everything I read cites how good it is for Crohn's disease. It actually changes the microbes in your gut to fight Inflammation! And...of course the stress relief of it all. Its more stressful right now for me to get him moving!! It's hard to tell a kid whose tired ALL the time that exercising will help him be LESS tired..

I still struggle with the bold part! And then I feel worse when I sit on the couch all night instead of working out. Our brains man, they like to play tricks on us!

Same is true for arthritis... it hurts to move, so the all the docs saying "move more!" are ignored, and yet I can testify that "move more" does, in fact, make arthritis more manageable.

Yep - me too! My ortho/rheumatologist told me, 'if you don't start moving, soon you won't be able to move at all'!

@Amymoreorless - Ugh! That sucks. Hope the rest helps!
@bossymom15 - Good for you for pushing him a bit...tough, but worth it! From what I can tell, movement helps all manners of autoimmune patients. (I am assuming Crohn's is, but I think that it hasn't been completely proven)

^^^ This! And then family/friends (well meaning enough) that when I am sore, they say I am doing too much. Nope, just muscles and tendons getting the work out they need. Hurt is different than sore. And when I am lazy, I hurt. Sore is something I can live with.

I wear a hydration belt which I spin around to get to while running so a belt is probably out for me. A headlamp has the advantage of pointing where you are looking - but if I look up and see a car that could be bad. Seems like a body came would be a problem if you want to remove layers or even unzip a jacket?

Ihaven't yet had a layering issue with my waist light, probably because it takes a MAJOR temp swing for me to add or remove layers, the belt is loose enough though that I don't forsee a problem pulling a layer out from under it to take it off. I always want my light facing forward, even when I turn my head, so that's an advantage of a belt lamp to me, that it's always straight ahead. Vest rides below my vest, so that's not a problem either. That's why it's noce there's a variety of different lighting options, so many different preferences.

@amymoreorless ugh! I thought I had a torn peroneal tendon (and so did my orthopedic surgeon) until I was able to get an MRI done. Turned out to be something else that required surgery, in my case, but I totally understand your pain and frustration! I hope the specialist gets you good answers and can get you back running soon!

I got my 5k in today after two consecutive rest days. The trip we took on Saturday just wore me out. We drove down to the Winstar world resort (on the Oklahoma/Texas border) to meet a friend from Canada who was in San Antonio for training. We went South 4.5 hours and he drove north 5 hours, so it was a nice mid point. The casino was disappointing. None of us are really gamblers, so we mostly just walked around and talked, spent 2 hours at the buffet (where I found $5 on the ground... Best luck I've ever had at a casino  ), then each put $20 in a slot machine and watched it rapidly melt away. We were hoping for some better attractions (shopping, mini golf, something???), But it was nice to have a chance to just catch up. We decided to forego staying the night and headed back North at about 4pm. Made a stop in okc to do some shopping and got back home at around 10pm.

Yesterday, I did nothing, nada, squat. Gary was working on the Tahoe (rebuilding the engine for a coworker), so I just stayed out of the way. I weighed in yesterday and was up 4lbs. Damn buffet. And road time....

This morning, I had dropped off half of the gain, so I should be back on target soon. The run this morning went well, and I finished in 27:25. That puts me at 31 miles for the month.

And ... Good news. I should be receiving a formal job offer shortly for that interview I did last week. And my current group is still working on a counter offer. Maybe they can just negotiate amongst themselves and do all the work for me.

I have Crohn's disease and my experience agrees with this. I am not sure if it is mental or physical, but I am so much better off when I can run. It can be a bit of a balancing act when in a flare because you have to ensure that you are absorbing adequate nutrients and fuel, but the few times that I have been completely sidelined (twice from fistula surgeries and once from a stress fracture likely caused by prolonged use of prednisone), I was really down and out. When my flares are bad, I keep my mileage to a minimum and I drink lots of supplement shakes. My doctor recommended Carnation Instant Breakfast packets and they have been a life saver over the years. Wishing the best to your son.

Monday intervals. .5mi warmup then 5x .75mi @ half marathon pace with .25mi recovery jog.

I’m pretty pleased that my half marathon pace was hovering around 8min. It’s not really. I’ll be lucky if I can average 9:10 over 13 miles, but for 5 miles I was pretty speedy for me

I wish I could get my husband to realize this also. He loves golf but it basically completely wipes him out and I'm always telling him that walking a few minutes a day would improve his stamina for golfing ;) But when we've been out of town and he's ended up walking a lot more than when he's working, he always says he feels better! If I were him (ha!) I'd walk from our driveway to the stop sign and back as many times as I could and know that I'm never more than 1/10th mile from the bathroom. But I'm just weird like that. LOL

I sometimes oscillate on the too warm/too cold line and unzip my top layer to let the wind in to cool down and then zip back up. But you have yours on your belt so that would not be an issue. Hmm. Need to find one that can be belt/chest/head that way I can try it each way...

Well, my life has been crazy. We are still trying to get insurance to pay off our loan and give us the extra money on our deer-wrecked car. Shortly after that wreck, my poor old car died and so we've been pulling our hair out and finally had to cave in and buy 2 cars. Like anybody wants to buy 2 cars at once. They don't offer BOGO deals you know! Thankfully this stuff is winding down and at least I have transportation.

My knee seems like it might just possibly be mending finally. I haven't run since Friday before last I think? I've basically been resting it and foam rolling my quads and trying to be more careful with all the squatting I'm doing taking care of and cleaning up after my very old dog. I work today and tomorrow then I'm off work until the new year so I hope I can resume running but I'm not sure yet. I want to see how I feel today and tomorrow.

I've scanned all the missed posts but I won't try to comment on old stuff :p

@amymoreorless You can do a week on crutches. I did 3 months. Enjoy your down time, read, binge watch TV, and keep us updated?

@ceciliaslater my husband works for the Chickasaw nation. So thanks very much for the donations! Haha! He's a counselor, not at winstar. I agree, if your not a gambler, it's perty lame unless you catch a concert. Fingers crossed on the job.

@JessicaMcB you look very beautiful in the purple dress, Happy Anniversary.
@amymoreorless that looks like it hurts ouch – I’m keeping a good thought that the swelling goes down
@karllundy your comment cracked me up, unless you have a really big head
@PastorVincent I don’t know how they would be on a trail, but I brought Skip and her teammates some knuckle lights for running at practice and they used them the other night and said they were great. Easy to hold on their knuckles (ha ha duh) and easy to point anywhere they wanted to see. Skip said a quick flick up when cars were coming to make sure they saw them. I also brought them flashing lights to wear. I truly am the best mom ever ha ha
@greenolivetree hopefully the worst of things are behind you. I was shocked at the price of car when we were looking, ouch on buying two at once.

Belt vs. head vs. chest light? I don't know about belt or chest from the runner side. I couldn't do a belt light, because I wear a hydration belt and it rotates while I run. I could do a chest light, but never have. If it's warm while it's dark, I want to wear a summer weight hat; that can interfere with the beam from the head light. So I wear my hat with the shortest brim (because I'm too stupid to just turn the hat around) and carry a handheld.

From the other side, if you're wearing a chest light and coming toward me in the dark you look like the headless horseman. I might be more inclined to get out of your way than I would be from just common courtesy.

Non-running update: Saw the sports doc again today. Looks pretty good, and now we work through return to running. No running today, but tomorrow I'm suppose to run 2 x 1 mile easy with 3 minutes recovery, then email him how it went. I'll get an assignment for Wednesday that will depend on how tomorrow goes.

Your insight on lamps made me smile. Glad to see the sports doc has a program to get you running again and that he's looking to track progress. Sounds like you have a real winner there.

    My December goal: 25 miles

    12/1: 2.11
    12/2: 2.12
    12/4: 2.11
    12/7: 2.19
    12/8: 2.12
    12/11: 2.12
    12/13: 2.19*
    12/16: 2.10
    12/18: 2.28 19.34 done, 5.66 to run

    * I run with the CT10K app running as well as Nike (and Spotify & CharityMiles, too!) This am, I heard Nike count down, yet somehow, it shut off @ the same time! Of course, I ran a different route, so this was an estimate, but pretty much in the ball park from what I saw from this morning's run.

I feel the same way most of the time. I usually can't run faster than 12 minute miles, and then someone posts that he/she ran a slow 10:30 mile.

@amymoreorless My ankle looks like yours only more purple. I tried to stand on it when it was numb and I buckled, but you have inspired me to go to the doctor rather than self-diagnosing myself. I am still going to work, using a high-top rebok shoe, and it has been helping keep it stable. However 12 hours on my feet are taking its toll. Have you been going to work? Anyway, I am glad that it will be better in a week. It will go fast.

@amymoreorless that does look ouchy! Hope it resolves with rest and keeping off it. @ereck44 sounds like you need to keep off yours as well.

I don't have a chest or belt lamp, but I do have a belt with LED lights so people can see me - and it's making a bit of a stir in the neighborhood. I get a lot of comments. This afternoon (while it was light) I was walking the dog and my neighbor down the street (I know her dog's name, but not hers of course) said "Are you the one who is running around with all the lights? I love them!" I fit right in with all the Christmas displays.

Short but nice run tonight while catching up with my friend (first I type fiend :)). Turns out she's been struggling with a lot of anxiety and stress, and has realized that it's worse because she hasn't been running. So, I told her I am on call for anxiety relief running at any time. I definitely get the same benefit, so it's a win for both of us.
