12/26 - Rest
12/27 - 3.4 miles (11:16 pace)
12/28 - 3.2 miles (Second test run for upcoming 5k) Total time is 33:14. Argh! You have no idea how disappointed I was being unable to run this in under 33 minutes. I pushed hard. I think my big mistake was I decided at the 2-mile mark that I suddenly wanted to try to run a 5k AND beat my race-day goal! Hah! Not the brighest idea when you were going at a comfortably hard pace to start. I quickened up the pace in the last 1.2 miles to no avail.
12/29 - 1 mile (10:19 pace)
12/30 - 3.2 miles (32:42!) I DID IT! First-ever 5k under 33 minutes!
12/31 - 2.75 miles (Took my time with this one. Focused on the music and controlling my breathing rather than speed.)
Total: 43.45/50 miles for December. Fell a bit short, but I definitely made some strides with speed, pacing and my breathing. Praying the weather breaks a bit this upcoming weekend (For Chicago, I'd be happy with temperatures in the 20s right now) so I can get back to running outside.
Some major milestones for me since since I started running in mid-September:
1) I can now run more than a block without getting severely out of breath!
2) My average 1-mile pace is down from 14:40 to about 9:50-10:30, but apparently when I push myself, I've found I can maintain a 10:12 pace for a 5k. How in the heck does THAT work?
3) About two years ago, my husband and I trained together for a Chicago 5k and I struggled a lot -- it was mostly mentally because he was faster than me, having started training about a month before I joined him. That year, I ran the 5k in 38 minutes. This year, I'm training on my own after a two-year hiatus and ran 3.2 miles the other day in 32:42. Progress!
4) Self-confidence. Before September, I would not step foot on a treadmill at the gym before now. And I hated running outside, terrified someone in my neighborhood would SEE ME. Lol.
As a Christmas gift, my dad signed me up for three races! Two 5ks in January and February and my first-ever 10k in April! A little nervous about that one.
Goals for January and the rest of 2018:
- Lose weight so my running speed goes up (it's one of the barriers, I think, to my breathing.)
- Control my pacing (but mostly, have patience) to run longer distances daily versus constantly trying to increase my 1-3 mile speeds.
- At the same time, I would be overjoyed if I could run a sub-9-minute 5k. In high school, I could run a mile in about 7 minutes to 7:30. Maybe it's wishful thinking, but a girl can dream.4 -

12/20: 2.28
12/22: 2.17
12/29: 1.60- 25.39 Total miles run for month - GOAL ACCOMPLISHED!!!!!
True I didn't SMASH it down, or do the CT10K for last week, but I DID accomplish the goal I set. I'm feeling kinda proud of myself, if I so say so myself!
And, the last run I did was a turn on the tunes, and just run. Ok, I did still take a few 30 second walk breaks, but I still had no agenda other than making my 25 mile goal. I get home to find that my over all pace time has improved! Ready to start again in the new year....

How do you see your training evolving?
This has been rattling around my head for the past week or so. Still formulating plans & goals, but now that I've accomplished this "little" goal, I think I'm back on track to setting some more for the coming months.6 -
Happy New Year!!!
Today I rode with 3 others and it was brutal. We did 50 miles but it was so hard. No matter what way we went I swear we had a head wind. One person was complaining the whole time. At one point I was laughing deliriously because we turned and we all thought we would have a tail wind ... and NOPE. So I was just laughing hysterically because there was nothing else I could do.
And then when I got home, I had my one mile to run for the streak. But I've learned the last 39 days that I am much stronger than I thought I was. My legs were tight and a mile is nothing (newbies, ignore that). A mile is a lot as a newbie.
So tomorrow we have a 40 mile bike ride planned with a big group. But IDK... I don't feel like doing it. Having been off the bike a lot this month, and riding 94 miles the last 2 days... well... let's just say there are issues. Runners aren't familiar with these issues, but cyclists are. But no matter what ... I'm running to finish this STREAK!
Finished December with 88 miles! Plus some cycling and lots of glute workouts! Yet somehow I gained 5 pounds this month! LOL
yeah, I have already started on the wine... so hopefully this all makes sense.

I wasn't going to go running today but I realized I had signed up for a challenge and I needed to run a 8 minute mile or less. I swear if someone was watching they probably thought I was running for my life. I was pumping along so hard that when I hit the one mile mark (7:45) I didn't notice that the trail I was coming up to was closed and I tripped over the small, pretty much at ground level, "invisible" chainlink fence. Not gonna lie, I totally crawled away as low as possible. So glad I go out so early. Lol
Oh, @abutcher2122 hope you are OK, but that was a great visual of you running like your life depended on it, BAM, and then slinking away hoping no one saw that. Great effort on your mile!
-10 F real temp out there right now. Think it's going to be the treadmill if anything today. Tomorrow is much the same, which makes for a tough Resolution Run. Yesterday it warmed up to almost 20 degrees F and it felt so much better, the dog and I were loving it. I was hoping we were on an upward trend but no.
Be back later with today's numbers, if any. Happy last day of 2017!
@katharmonic I'm okay. Luckily I busted my butt the on so many Lego pieces lately, that fall was like going down memory lane.2 -
Weekly update On December goal of 140 (~4.5/Day Avg) with a stretch of 170 (~5.5/Day Avg).
Week 1 of 12/1 to 12/3 : 26
Week 2 : 48
Week 3 : 40
Week 4 : 43.1 (total 157.1)
No work this upcoming week so looking to finish the year with two firsts
First 1 - run over 50 Miles in a week
First 2 - have a 200+ mile month total
Week 5 - completed 60.7 Miles to finish the month with 217.1 Miles.
Tomorrow will complete the 40 Day holiday running streak. Has been fun and really not all that difficult to complete to find 10 minutes if I needed a simple 1 mile run to satisfy the requirements. Since most if not all of my runs during this time were to just run vs any focus on any sort of race specific training I feel “slower” but at times hard to tell if it is that or that running in the cold, uneven snow surface at times, extra layers, etc is also a contributing factor. That approach changes Jan 8th as I look forward to a couple of HM’s and see if planned training can be successful to run a full in early May.6 -
@ddmom0811 sorry about your cycling problem
So I was just reading that Emma Coburn ran 3280 miles this year along with winning a gold medal AND managed to get married. Go girl!0 -
@ddmom0811 I switched to a noseless saddle. It seems to help with some issues. Although I don't ride enough to say I even ride. Hope it resolves quickly. Way to go this month and year! You've really kicked kitten!0

So that closes out the year at 1302.79 km. Still a new high for me. So on to 2018.
I had a sucky Dec for running, to many Family/Work & Life conflicts that I let side track me.
Managed 8.96km today, needed 40m to round that up but when the Garmin is under 3 layers it's a run by feel/guestimation. Only -27C today so 6 C warmer than yesterday. Tomorrow -15C so will be a heat wave.
58km for the month when my normal average has been around 110 km. 130 km if I exclude Nov and Dec.
12/03 9.5 km – MTD 009.5 km – YTD 1253.77 km
12/04 6.94km – MTD 016.44km – YTD 1260.71 km
12/09 10.08km – MTD 026.52km – YTD 1270.79 km
12/11 11.04km – MTD 037.56km – YTD 1282.83 km
2/17 5.0 km – MTD 042.56km – YTD 1287.83 km
12/30 6.0 km – MTD 048.56km – YTD 1293.83 km
12/31 8.96 km – MTD 057.52km – YTD 1302.79 km Riverbank Trail
So many great accomplishments - Good people - Good Athletes. I find I enjoy encouraging others to challenge what they feel their limits/boundaries are. In September at our local Obstacle Course/Zumba race up Misery Mtn ski hill 2 ladies who were all nervous bundles kicked my kitten by 8 minutes over 6km - i'm okay with that. We dragged 3 ladies out in October for our 7 Peaks Challenge and they all finished the complete route. 7 Hill Climbs and 36km. These are the people that inspire - encourage me - when you see that goofy smile of OMG I did it.

@juliet3455 I went to RaceTrax! I have the same relationship with Country Hills Running Room in Calgary though, they are so good to me! Will check that one out next time we are in Edmonton as I am very pro RR
I chose to close 2018 on a rest day with my husband since he goes back on the road here right away. Big love to all you 2017 dream chasers, hard racers and injured elite pacers- thanks for being part of my tribe. Know that out there there is a very strange Canadian woman who is proud of all the cool *kitten* you've shared in here this year
5,055km or 3,159mi on the year, raced a decent season, going into the next shortly- God's been good to me in 2017, ready to hit 2018 like it owes me money!
Now I gotta chase down my husband- I'm not wearing people clothes for nothing . Happy New Year y'all!

Today's notes: waited for night for my last run of 2017. We had a group run in embarrass, Minnesota at a friend's house. The course was a simple ~0.5 mile loop on snowy single track. I covered either 17 or 18 loops. Not sure for sure. It was a FLAT course, but the snow and -22f temp with -33 windchill made up for that. It was really cool running in the crisp air under a bright moon and clear skies. Great way to end the year.
2017 mileage total: 1816 miles. Not too bad. See you all in the January thread!
Hope everyone had a runderful day!

Here’s to a new year and new goals all.
2017 - competed a half marathon, ran lots, laughed lots, read a ton of posts on some crazy threads about running, did a virtual 5k in the dark whilst on an activity weekend, for a friend I’ve never met, in memory of her son, and would do it again in a heartbeat.
I didn’t run New Year’s Eve, I walked the muddiest Walk I’ve ever done, slipping and sliding and not quite falling, laughing all the way.
Looking forward to 2018 and the January challenge. Happy running folks!9 -
I added up my 2017 miles. It was really hard (insert sarcasm font here). A whole 78 miles! My lowest ever. Next year can only be better!5
-
Wasn't able to check in for a couple of days since I left my computer charging cord at home and only realized it partway through our travels! Finished out the last two days of 2017 with an epic 15 miler (for me, anyway) through the snow and over a mountain, followed by a longer than expected 6.8 mi run the next morning. Today was a rest and travel day so back at it again tomorrow! December was my longest mileage month in at least 3.5 years (maybe more) and I got a total of 133 mi for the month.
Happy running to everyone in 2018!
