@MobyCarp Happy birthday. Oh yes when they harvest the cotton it's a mess. It's all over the roads and sides of the streets.

@MobyCarp Happy Birthday! Yeah, your "old man" upper body workout puts most of us to shame... and once you're running again, your "easy" pace will still be faster than my fast pace! Hope the rest and healing will have worked out for you! Good luck!

@shanaber -- I had to look at your profile to see where you hailed from and figured it was in the southern hemisphere, but nope, just southern CA! I love your quote on your profile page! Good luck with your run tomorrow!

The farms around here are really good about keeping the cotton out of the roads. I live right by two fields that do cotton part of the year and have never seen it in the streets. Maybe it all goes in the canal with all the other garbage? I will have to watch next time and see!

    1/14/18 Key West Half Marathon

Passed on an invitation to do an outdoor run early this morning, just wasn't feeling it (either the early or the cold). Instead I baked dog cookies and later bundled up and took said spoiled dog out for a hike in the more sheltered-from-the-wind woods. I saw an owl and a couple of woodpeckers up close among other birds along the way, so it was a nice one! No time to get gloves off for a picture though, and it was bad enough when I had to do the dog poop bag so I was not exposing my hands again.

Finally made it to the Y to hit the treadmill this afternoon for 3 miles, which puts me at 90.7 out of my goal of 93 (goal was to average of 3 miles/day for December, I'm averaging 3.36 right now).

Coach has posted alternate plans for tomorrow's run groups if the temps are as expected to be (wind chills -15 F or below they will not hold outdoor groups). I'm kind of pleased to have an opportunity to do an indoor speed workout as a change of pace and, as mentioned before, I'm not feeling this weather at all.

I was kind of hoping that over Christmas holidays that y'all would slow down a bit. Haha. I know better!

I am not doing so well on keeping up on here due to running all over the place for the holidays and then work keeping me busy. I lost one guy due to promotion and now another one quit, so I am down 2 techs right now. So not only am I rolling out two major pieces of software starting Jan1, I am doing it short-handed. YEAH!

Running: ummmm, I'm not doing so hot on that front either. I haven't done more than 3.2 miles at one time all month. And yesterday, when trying out new running gear, I felt a tweak in the glute again. So I am back to PT, stretching, rolling and seeing how it feels later. Not doing so hot on swimming either. I'm a mess. HAHA.

    @Elise4270 Goals...
1 - consistency - this goes for a lot of things. More consistent in my training (which includes running, swimming, strength, stretching). More consistent in time with family (my boys specifically) and more consistent with my health.

2 - complete the Triathlon in March and not die.

    3. Lose the rest of the 100 lbs I set out to lose (down 50 so far).

Where do I see myself next year?
I am going to the the lottery winner, living in a big house and 50 lbs lighter. LOL At least 50 lbs lighter anyway.

I have loved this group since starting running in July and I am hoping to still keep up with y'all in 2018!!

@rheddmobile I am with you. Probably not ever going to be a long distance runner. I just am trying to stay healthy and keep the RA and old age from taking over like it almost did this year.

@HonuNui HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! Sorry I am so late. Great pics!
@garygse Great news on the running. Don't go too fast, but still great news.
@WandaVaughn I am so sorry you were so sick! Don't worry about how fast. @mobycarp probably gave the best answer. You will bounce back I am sure.
@MNLittleFinn OMG! Frick, that is cold! I am such a wuss. You cold weather people are amazing to me. I would HAVE to have a treadmill for that cold.
@Jessicamcb so sorry about the dog bite and irresponsible owners.
    @dutchandkiwi sweet Christmas present!
@kgirlhart you too!!! I love new gear! I was out in the cold drizzle yesterday too because I had to try out some "cold" weather gear.
@MobyCarp HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! You are the fastest, coolest and running knowledgeable "old" man I know. And you are not old. I know you hate not running, but you will be back. Know that we love you here!!!

Christmas was really good, but I am glad that the crazy is over. We have to travel to too many family members houses to really enjoy it. My boys were crazy hyper for the last few days which makes for some long days, but I love seeing their excitement. I got a little bit of workout stuff/gear which I loved. I got a new mount for my phone on my bike, a Buff to wear when it's "cold" and new running gloves. I tried those out yesterday and they did amazing at keeping my hands warm enough that I wasn't in pain before I got home. And I got some pull-up assistance straps so I am going to start working on my upper body strength as soon as I get home tonight. One day I should be able to do an unassisted pull-up. I should have put that as one of my 2018 goals.!

Happy holidays, Merry Christmas and Festivus to all!

@seanevan10 Running in cold just takes layering. I should have had a 4th layer on top this morning, but I have 3 more days in this training week (training week is mon-Sun) to get it right.

well, it's official, I'll be closing out my 2017 on a 800m single track loop at 2100 in -22F weather on 21/31. This is going to rock.

@shanaber yes Lidl is a grocery store, similar to Aldi. They just opened one near my house and their groceries are super cheap. They sell all sorts of interesting things in the middle of the store. They are currently selling a clothing line by Heidi Klum among other things. Last week I picked up a flat iron for $13!

@RunsOnEspresso I live near a cotton gin mill. Near the fields it's not much of an issue near the mill it is.

@JessicaMcB I am really looking forward to challenging myself with the trail races! Been eyeing the 2018 series since @juliet3455 first recommended it. Would be awesome to see you there if that ends up working out for you!

@MNLittleFinn Brrrr! I have decided -20C (-4F) is my cutoff for now (until I figure out how to keep my glasses from fogging).

Happy birthday @MobyCarp ! So many December birthdays! You "celebrate" about much as I do. Tuna is my subway.

I hope you get your birthday wish, and are able to run those 2 miles soon, pain free.

ETA They say age only matters if you're wine or cheese. I use to believe that. But now that I'm encroaching upon 50, I think it's BS. Be old if you want. It's a badge of wisdom youth can't understand.

    Happy birthday @MobyCarp
Old is running a fast 4 miles and realizing the injured guy 12 years older than you wouldn't think it was fast.
4 miles at just under 8 a mile. Testing the calf to see if it can handle speed. True test will be the response on the next two runs. I'm at 143 for the month, with 160 in sight I'm hoping for two more good runs to finish a great 2017.

12/1 - 5 miles. Still loving the warmer than average weather!
    12/2 - 5 miles.
    12/3 - Busy / rest day.
    12/4 - 5.15 miles. This weather is nuts! It was 63° at 4:45 a.m.
    12/5 - 4.75 miles. 35° temperature drop in 24 hours...Brrr!
12/6 - 3.5 'mill miles, then upper body weights / abs.
    12/7 - Unplanned rest day. Didn't sleep...ZZZZZ
12/8 - 3.5 on the treadmill, then weights and abs.
    12/9 - 4.5 windy miles.
12/10 - 3 'mill miles, then extremely short upper body weights.
    12/11 - 5 miles.
    12/12 - Rest day.
    12/13 - 5 windy miles.
12/14 - 5 miles. Colder by 15° than yesterday, but way more comfortable because no *kitten* wind!
12/15 - 4 miles. Shorter than usual because my wife wouldn't stop talking so I could get out the door to run
12/16 - Unplanned rest day. Just lazy.
    12/17 - Another rest day...still lazy...and a bit hungover
    12/18 - 5.1 miles.
    12/19 - 5 miles.
12/20 - 4 on the treadmill, then upper body weights
12/21 - Sooner than usual rest day as I plan to run every day of the rest of December.
    12/22 - 5 miles.
12/23 - 4 on the treadmill, then short upper body weights
12/24 - 4 on treadmill, then way over-indulgent Christmas Eve and Day!
12/25 - Rest day - too cold / slick and gym is closed.
12/26 - 5 treadmill miles - Trek class with instructor and one other person
12/27 - 3.4 'mill miles, then quick weight / strength.
12/28 - 5.1 treadmill miles - Trek class. Lots of sprints today (only 30 seconds each).

@PastorVincent - I just wanted to say thanks for your earlier suggestion of purchasing a blue tooth transmitter device for my husband's shuffle. I got that along with a set of wireless earbuds for his Christmas gift and it works great. Funny thing is, he also got me a set of wireless earbuds. He was thinking that I would have to start running with my phone instead of my Shuffle, but the transmitter works great so he ordered one for me yesterday.

Great! Love to hear how it works out in a month or two once it has some miles on it. I use one for playing my phone on my car stereo (BT receiver instead of transmitter but same idea) - but have not used one while running with headphones yet.

    Goal = 93 miles

December goal met! Today's run group was held inside on treadmills due to the windchill. We did 5 minute intervals hard x 3, with 90 sec recovery between. With warm-up and cool-down I was at 3.96 miles per my Garmin, a little more per the treadmill. I did not mind at all not going outside for this one. Although the dog is currently at the door hinting pretty strongly we should go out. If I bundle up and get it done, then we can both take a nap. :)

Did 5 miles then 8 strides on the treadmill with a half mile cool down. Ended up being 7 miles. I was too chicken to run outside. It’s in the teens with the wind chill. That’s too cold for me! I’m good with 30+ if it’s sunny and 40+ otherwise. I’m a wimp compared to the other runners here running in sub-zero temps

It’s supposed to stay cold for awhile, I’m going to have to figure out some layers cause I’m not attempting any long runs on the treadmill!!

And the honor of old men is their gray hair. -- Proverbs 20:21

@zdyb23456 I find the biggest thing with layers is to make sure your base layer is moisture wicking or you will get sweaty and cold. The other day it was upper 20s and I wore a tank top with a Tek Gear jacket I brought at Kohl's. It's kind of a moisture wicking material on the outside and light fleece on the inside and I was good. Gloves, long tights and a headband. It was 5:30 am so no sun. I tried to find the jacket online but I can't. ugh.
