Gratitude

I don’t post much but I read voraciously.
I just wanted to express my gratitude for all of you who selflessly guide, direct and impart your wisdom. It’s taken me almost five years to finally find my groove and most of what I’ve learned was right in front of my face. I just wanted fast.
Thank you again to all of you. You know who you are.
This is my third account BTW. In case you’re confused about my short stay.

Awesome! I've learned a lot too. I'm still trying to un-demonize carbs from my keto days.8

I like you guys.5

This site has always been amazingly helpful to me too ❤ I can't believe the crazy ideas I had when I started 4? Years ago!4

I am so grateful for MFP too. For years, I was convinced "I've got this!!". But I needed to learn how to eat. Again! I had grown up with a traditional eating pattern, but I got sucked into all that shiny sciency health and weightloss woo, so traditional wasn't "good enough" for me anymore. I had to unlearn so much, and learn to be patient and trust the process - and myself. Scary and fun and exciting, and, oh, it works. I lost those excess 50 pounds, and they've stayed away for three years now, without much effort. I want everybody to find this simple and humble solution, but it's a hard sell15

Fast is fun, fast is exciting, fast makes you feel like you're succeeding. It's so hard to realize that fast really doesn't get you where you want to be. And I need to learn that lesson about once a week, so good on you for grasping it!5
-
Well I can’t lie and say I’ve absolutely gotten it lol. That might be construed as pride and we all know where that leads.
I just know I feel better, am losing AND I have energy!!9 -
Good luck it’s funny how simple it actually is. People tend to make losing weight so complicated when it doesn’t have to be.3
-
I feel you. I've been frustrated with this place and left it (oh, when the recipe builder when bonkers it just annoyed me to no end!), but I had to come back.
I've gained so much knowledge, insight, and support from here that it's been invaluable.
Even three years into this, I'm still learning and hope to never stop.
Best of luck to you, OP, and thanks for the upbeat post.9 -
Thank you all for taking the time to contribute. Hey Ho the gangs (the ones in the forefront of this post, but not all) all here!!!!
Pssst! I love you @baconslave and @KnitOrMiss and probably a dozen others who’ve yanked me along the way, regardless of what my macros are.0 -

I was skeptical that the community here would be useful to me, but thankfully that has mostly been untrue! I really appreciate the overall tone of no-nonsense supportiveness that many of the regulars bring to the boards (or at least the three I limit myself to). And I discovered a while ago that reassuring new posters that it's just water weight has really helped when I have the occasional panic moment!10

Oh that’s soooooo true!!!! Water weight. Never even saw that one coming. I’m JUST NOW able to see a gain and not panic and give up!! Truer words my friend!! Truer words.

This is the first time ever I've hit a weight that I'm willing to call maintenance instead of continuing to lose weight randomly until I can't any more, then eating my way back up. I've been able to do it because of the informed posters who are willing to take the time to offer fact-based answers to every question that can be asked about anything weight and exercise related.

Girl you got this!! I am SO so happy to see you happy! It has been a ride but you got yourself settled and that is THE most important thing. BTW my newsfeed is full of joy when you are around! I can't always respond but I wanted you to know that!1

I appreciate everyone here too!2

I am so glad to see a positive post about MFP instead of the usual ones condemning everyone as mean.
Great post.
As a long term member I to am grateful for all the support and advice I have received. Could not have done it without this site and the members on it.

So much this.
The funny thing is that it didn't take me very long reading the forums (and I read for a while before jumping in and participating) to see who made the most sense. Some of the "meanest" people made the most rational comments because they brought the knowledge.
There was one poster, he's long gone now, oh, he was so blunt, but man did he know his stuff. The forum climate was very different then, and people got away with being a bit more, um, shall we say, confrontational, in discussions.
I learned so much from him.11 -

Its reasons like this that make me really sad how easy it is to get jailed in here -Iv held off on discussion or bluntness because i kept getting jailed by over sensitive OPS flagging me, Is jail still a thing LOL?-
Bluntness is what a vast majority of people need. Its not mean, Its just refusing to baby alot of the lies and misinformation people are busy spinning their wheels over to try and skip them a few steps ahead onto a path that will actually get them where they want to be.
People are to damn sensitive lol6 -

Some of us get very attached to the lies we tell ourselves. To the point that they become part of us. So when someone "attacks" our worldview, we feel as if we as a person are being attacked. Only when we are finally able to be objective enough to recognize and re-separate the misconceptions from ourselves and to recognize/identify dysfunctional behaviors and hack them without self-judging, can we even "hear" truth.7 -

I get it but people shouldnt need to get jailed or kicked off the site so people can lie to themselves Pretty sure alot of us who are successful can directly link our success to alot of the bluntness and open discussions that happens here. Just sucks lol6 -
Thank you for this thread! I totally am a forum-stalker and rarely find myself posting. But I have learned and continued to learn so much by reading everyone's threads.
It's a shame that people get so sensitive and flag the no-nonsense, not-sugar-coated reality answers. Sometimes people just don't want to hear the truth and find it too harsh. I can understand that...but also you asked for it.4 -
I love the knowledgeable so-called mean people who tell the truth bluntly, but also have some kindness/empathy at heart. IMO, tough love requires kindness, generosity and empathy.
I get that moderation of the forums is difficult. People with good content and good intentions do sometimes get snappish or snarky, especially when answering the same question for the 11 millionth time, and getting nonsensical poorly-reasoned insulting pushback for the 33 millionth.
It makes me cringe, too, to see arrogant theorists insult experienced MFP-ers who I know to be actual scientists in relevant fields, or true high-expertise long-term fitness professionals.
I, too, am super grateful for MFP, which has helped change my life (in its 6th decade! ), and to the people of the forums from whom I've learned so much.11 -

True.
Bluntness shouldn't be jailable.
I was just saying that it isn't surprising, the sensitivity.
I remember the person I was 3 years ago. My entire worth was wrapped up in my failure to keep my weight reasonable. Like it or not, we're conditioned to feel shame if our appearance isn't acceptable to society's ideal. It's reinforced our whole lives. To the point that some people internalize the negative reaction. They get twisted. Our whole-being is an entire failure. And no one is better at criticizing and punishing us than ourselves. Some people aren't ready yet to handle the truth: that YES you did this to yourself, but it doesn't make you "bad." And YES you can fix it. It's all up to you. You are the only one who can make it happen. But that's good news. Because you CAN make it happen. You are the only one who can. You have that power. You. Have. Power.
No guilt, but no excuses. Make it happen.
I didn't believe I could do it, until it became clear to me that I HAD TO do it. Now or never.
Some people just aren't ready. They don't believe that they have power to make changes. Or the patience to wait for them to bear fruit.
The secret to weight loss is: Do the thing. Every day. Yes, you can. Make decisions every dang day that point you in the direction you need to go. Time will sort the rest of it out. Yes, it's hard sometimes. But life is hard. Choose your "type" of hard. Yes, sacrifice has to be made. Sacrifices of one sort or another that achieve a deficit. Consistently. No one can make that happen but you. Do the thing. Is it worth it? Every minute. You are worth it. You deserve it. What happens if you stop doing the thing? It's not the apocalypse, but it will take longer to get where you want to go.
Consistency, persistence, and time. There's your magic formula.
But we know some people aren't ready to hear it. That of course doesn't make them "bad," just not ready. Which is unfortunate, but it is what it is. Since they're the ones who have to make it happen, it's up to them to decide their path.
The whole horse/water thing. At least we've shown them the watering hole location, right? But a seed has been planted. Sometimes you're around to see it come up. Sometimes not.
