Great post.
As a long term member I to am grateful for all the support and advice I have received. Could not have done it without this site and the members on it.
So much this.
The funny thing is that it didn't take me very long reading the forums (and I read for a while before jumping in and participating) to see who made the most sense. Some of the "meanest" people made the most rational comments because they brought the knowledge.
There was one poster, he's long gone now, oh, he was so blunt, but man did he know his stuff. The forum climate was very different then, and people got away with being a bit more, um, shall we say, confrontational, in discussions.
I learned so much from him.
Its reasons like this that make me really sad how easy it is to get jailed in here -Iv held off on discussion or bluntness because i kept getting jailed by over sensitive OPS flagging me, Is jail still a thing LOL?-
Bluntness is what a vast majority of people need. Its not mean, Its just refusing to baby alot of the lies and misinformation people are busy spinning their wheels over to try and skip them a few steps ahead onto a path that will actually get them where they want to be.
People are to damn sensitive lol
Some of us get very attached to the lies we tell ourselves. To the point that they become part of us. So when someone "attacks" our worldview, we feel as if we as a person are being attacked. Only when we are finally able to be objective enough to recognize and re-separate the misconceptions from ourselves and to recognize/identify dysfunctional behaviors and hack them without self-judging, can we even "hear" truth.
This is true, and that's why I think it's helpful that there's a balance between some tough love and empathy.
Saying that, there's no telling someone deep in delusion that simply stating facts to them isn't an attack sometimes.
I've been on both sides of this (not on here), so I can appreciate how it feels. There's no winning either way.5 -

I'm part of a soapmaking community that is full of amazing, blunt, incredibly scientific and intelligent soapmakers. They have a wealth of knowledge to share, but newbies often huff and puff about how "rude" they are when they answer a simple question without sugar-coating. Makes me roll my eyes.4 -

It's a shame that people get so sensitive and flag the no-nonsense, not-sugar-coated reality answers. Sometimes people just don't want to hear the truth and find it too harsh. I can understand that...but also you asked for it.
I got flagged for telling a poster her eating disorder needed proffesional help....
iv been jailed for "derailing" my own thread...forget what exactly i said but i remember it was totally on the topic and ...you know....MY thread anyway LOL4 -

I got a thread derailment warning for makimg a joke probably 3 pages past the point where the initial derailment occurred.0 -

@toxicon Are you a disher? I am.1 -
So this morning I’ve taken steps to back up sound advice given to a few people. Giving back? Making an attempt to help others.
Now I have this guilt and worth issue. I’ll give my backstory at some point. I’ll need to. But I can’t shake the idea that I’m not worthy of extending a helping hand because I’ve failed so much.
I know it’s silly. I’ve LEARNED waaay more than failed, right? So I just needed to talk my way through this.
This forum place can be really intimidating, but I have a great big personality to go along with my great big heart. As well as my great big mental disorders.
Today I’m feeling like....I’m so glad I’m still here.7 -

Trying and failing and walking the walk gives you insight that may well benefit many people in similar situations.
A helping hand starts from the willingness to extend it and personal experience often provides a powerful testimonial.
Just... don't expect the moon and the stars from anything you post, especially if you ever try to avert a train wreck in the making!
"victories", posters who prove themselves receptive to what you believe to be well thought out and reasonable advice, people who come back and let you know you've made a difference... well, they all exist, but they're far from the majority of your interactions!9 -

Hey thank you very much!! Okay then I’ll keep supporting sound advice and throw in my experience and opinion when it seems fitting.
You give great advice. High five.

Nope! I've heard of it though. I'm active on SoapmakingForum.com. Great little community, it's taught me so much.2 -
I’ve considered making soap as I make laundry soap. It’s just such a pain finding lye. And I’m not much for ordering stuff over the web. The less info out there the better, sez I.1

In Canada at least, I have good luck finding 100% pure lye crystals in the plumbing section of local hardware stores. It's such an addictive hobby, I loooove it.2 -
Many thanks from me too. I must admit though I'm still trying to separate the wheat from the chaff.
Thank you Good_Mornin... for starting this thread...1 -
Agreed OP! I've been on MFP almost a year--my doctor turned me on to it. At first I only logged my food. Then, I started reading a few posts. While I continue to lurk, read, and learn, I now post a little.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, veteran MFP posters for your straightforward help!!! Please ignore the vocal few naysayers/overly sensitive and remember those many of us who are reading your comments and taking them to heart.3 -
I really am digging the gratitude here!!
Thank you all for contributing!1 -
What amazes me is the patience of some of the long time posters who continually repeat the same things in different threads, all while being far more level headed than I can be.
There are a lot of them but I'm specifically thinking about @Aaron_K123
And I do like that mis-information gets called out very quickly here. When first starting, I was worried this site would just repeat Dr. Oz or Oprah and was very happy to see it is much more science based.
For the most part, I like it here. Just dreading Jan 1 again.10 -
Totally agree TackleWasher. I also read carefully what Aaron posts, sometimes I end up scratching my head, as it’s over it, but it’s always so carefully researched. I appreciate folks who are methodical.
Thanks for contributing!!!0 -

I started lurking in the spring so I haven't witnessed January on the boards. I imagine all the crazy is dialed up to 11 for a few weeks. I feel kind of bad giving people a hard time about it because I started losing weight in January myself, but it wasn't a new year's resolution, it just happened to be that I had a physical in the first week of January and it was the kick in the pants I needed to get started.3 -

I can see it now. I'm dreading it. Right now, it's almost like the calm before the storm.4 -

Generally there are a lot of new folks. Asking a bazillion and 1 questions that have been answered a bazillion and 2 times. Same in the low-carb group I help mod. It's kind of overwhelming for the regulars sometimes. Few people ever read stickies, but they are there to direct folks to for a reason. I just try to remember that used to be me. It's still a bit much for a little bit. But y'know, planting seeds.7 -

Yeah, me too. I was referring more to the "I remember I was a newb once." Some people just don't read them. But I've always been a come in, case the joint, see what's what kind of person before I go jumping in the deep end. Others would rather just fly by the seat of their pants, I guess? And some people just don't have the patience to read. It is what it is. The nature of the forum-beast.2 -

I search past posts before I post a new thread. I know I'm a weirdo and I'm proud of it!6 -

I read stickies too. Hell I read EVERYTHING all of the times.
And I don’t think I’ve seen but a few Thank You threads outside of success stories. Figured it was due.
