Unless you are 100% perfect all the time in your eating and exercise regimes there will be times you faulter or get off course. The holidays are especially hard with parties, family events and the financial stresses that go with. January 1 is a great time to get back to basics and make some resolutions about life and how to take better care of yourself. Life is a roller coaster and for many of us so is fitness, we have ups and downs and times we are just coasting.
Any one who has a desire to change for the better, to get back on track or whatever should have the full support of anyone here. We all had our own “resolution days” the day we first decided to take control of our health and weight.
I myself have had many ups and downs ranging from having first some baby weight to lose to becoming a distance runner for years, completing ultra marathons and weight training daily to go through divorce packing on the pounds drinking and eating my emotions. I’m back here now on the first of January now-because as one posted earlier all my work parties and family events have finished and I can focus now on myself.
Last night I rejoiced here in London watching people hugging, the skies light up with fireworks and people shouting with enthusiasm and promise for what a new year and a new start will bring for them, myself included. I’m not sure why anyone would feel condescending or angry towards those of us that use this moment where there is an almost universal sense of new beginning to start our own.7 -
The start of a new year is as good of a day as any to start pursuing new goals. With holiday indulgence, lots of people are thinking about health and fitness, so are motivated at this time. Will all of them last? Of course not, but the same is true of people who join on the other 364 days a year. I've been here almost seven years, every day, and I reached goal weight years ago, and currently at 142 lbs (5'9" male), I'm below goal weight - so it can be done. Give them a chance.
And btw, I'm joining a gym today. I prefer running and cycling outdoors and have dumbbells at home, but the gym will be a nice inclement weather alternative. No doubt there will be mockers and scoffers among the long time members at the gym, but they don't know my personal motivation - which is that as of today my insurance will provide a free gym membership. So let them judge me all they want, I'll keep doing my thing and enjoying success without regard for the thoughts of others.6 -
I am encouraged by the number of folks in this thread who aren't being snarky and remember we were all beginners once.7

Very disappointed to read all the negative comments regarding newbies on 1St Jan. I have just joined here because I just found out about it I have been doing healthy lifestyle for over a year not just started.
It takes some people alot of courage to take that first step in asking for support or going into that gym just because u didn't make that desicion
To start on 1st well good for you.
I joined here thinking it would b a good touch Base make new friends and be inspired by those of you that have reached your personal goals and beyond.
Thanks for being so supportive of all the newbies after all u all started somewhere.

Meant to tick like not wooo. I do apologise if I misinterpreted the posts but in all honesty I personally did find it offensive and disrespectful. I wonder how many of your newbies misinterpreted it too it certainly doesn't sound welcoming. That is the just my opinion though

I’m new, this is something I have to take seriously I had a heart attack and 2 stints put in on November 29, 2017. Pretty scary I am only 49. So that’s my motivation... Death is not an option for me. I'm new too. I'm Beth, live in Colorado, 46 years old and have an 8 year old. I have over 150 lbs to lose to get to a healthy weight. I just had my cholesterol tested and it was VERY high. My mother died of a stroke when she was only 50 so I see my fate in her if I continue to live my life this way. Death is not an option for me either.1 -
Yup packed gym, line ups for the squat rack, bench press and cardio equipment. However it drops off in about 6 weeks. Kudos to those that keep with it and are committed to making the change.

Well, yes, I get annoyed when I get to the gym and the one stair mill is being taken up by someone going really really fast, and bracing their entire body weight up by their arms, thereby negating their workout and stressing the machine....THAT being said...
think its great that newbies come *here* and not spent 300$ on pills, shakes cleanses or some other New Year's resolution marketed 'fix". There's a huge amount of collective wisdom, experience and success at MFP. I say let's share it and help everyone achieve their goals and perhaps clear up some misconceptions along the way. I benefited and continue to benefit from the experience of others....5
