Now, now. They may come full of hope and misinformation, woo and no real commitment, but some of them stay for good and change their lives. It's worth the rest of us suffering though 100s of 'starvation mode' and 'sugar is evil' threads to help the few who stick with it... right?
LOL, ask me again in february!30 -
I’m new, this is something I have to take seriously I had a heart attack and 2 stints put in on November 29, 2017. Pretty scary I am only 49. So that’s my motivation... Death is not an option for me. I have 2 grand daughters I would love to watch grow up they are 2 & 3. Feel free to add me as a friend, I don’t know how to work this app yet. My Name is Jodi34

God bless them for taking the first step. Let's encourage them however we can.27

IMO, unfortunately, anyone that has to wait for a "traditional" day for behavior change instead of working to make the change when they realize there is a problem is doomed to failure.14

I actually don't mind it. It makes the forums more active for a bit. Also, some of the longtime members MIGHT be able to help someone struggling to lose weight clear up some misconceptions that tend to run rampant that time of year. Here's to hoping.20

Love that people are wanting to get in shape and live a better lifestyle but secretly I HATE that time of year because my gym is super small so most of the equipment is first come first served and I only have so much time to fit my workouts in...Sorry, call me scrooge3

My gym will be packed.3

i am a re-tread, i lost 60lbs with MFP, maintained the loss for 3 years, then blah blah divorce blah, and Im back again. Im MMtardis if anyone remembers me.6

It makes an excellent fruit fly trap! Just put some in a bowl with a drop of dish soap.
Drinking it, though...ew.2 -
honestly last year i was dreading it a bit because im like....woo incoming...
Then i realized all the woo is happening daily anyway, And my life is incomplete without woo. It gets funny. And im happy not being the newbie anymore, And seeing those who come in post rediculous questions like i had and then seeing them transform and become one of us -one of us! one of us! one of us!-
And then repeat next year with them.
Last janurary i made a few new friends who i helped sort through the woo and 2 of them have now lost over 120 pounds combined. 1 Straight up thanks me often for being so blunt and helping them see what had to be done. Like it feels good to help people succeed, And see them grow like i had, And continue to cement in my brain the things iv learned through constantly repeating to the newbs. lol.
Bring on the influx. I am prepared (or i will be after a;ll the christmas goodies i can fit in my belly on the 25-26th)
edited to add: all the newbs hoping to lose weight unknowingly help me get back on track after christmas honestly. Seeing the woo and the fad diets help me remember how simple it really is, Put down the leftover christmas cookies and go for a walk jayde. The holidays done. Get back on track yourself -goes for a walk-16 -

I'm torn between 'We were all new at some point' and 'FFS, please no more ACV/sugar/aspartame/keto/starvation mode threads!'

I'm glad I'm not the only one amused by the woo, I just hope that people who are fooled by it are willing to listen to reason so they can make a change for the better. I won't lie I used to believe that Keto was King until I learned that I could have my carbs and still lose weight. If not for this forum I would've failed and given up because fries are delicious bruh, and I can't live without them.

Excellent way of looking at this and not being judgmental.1 -
I was one of them! I started in 2016, January 1st. Still here almost 2 years later. Started obese, now around 110 lbs and normal weight, but still very much a work in progress. I too am hoping to make some changes this year and am waiting for January 1st to start. I don't know why but starting afresh just makes things easier.14

I feel sorry for them ... the new comers ... who will ask a question or make a comment and have all the 'experts' on here come flying out with their verbal bats blazing ... and then they'll get all worked up about each others posts and forget all about that newbie who asked a question cause they wanted to clarify. ... Yep ... the boards will run up a lot of posts.20

This actually happened to a friend of mine on here, it was really disappointed because responders were more focused on one upping each and debating than helping her. It was frustrating and sad. She ended up just giving up the thread and trying to figure things out on her own.
I feel like the 'experts' need to tone down so they don't scare people away.18 -
Not new to MFP, but new to the forums.. what's "woo"?

That was me last year, sorta. I started tracking via another system in December 2016 and switched back to MFP right after the new year. It was just a coincidence though. But I did make my fair share of woo posts at first and had to be educated2 -

I totally agree with this. We were all beginners, once upon a time. I know when I started here, people were kind and never let me feel out of place. Once of the reasons I stayed and kept at it. I left at different times, but I always managed to come back.6 -

This.
Personally, I'm not looking forward to the influx of people who play into resolutions coming to the gym. Granted, they will be gone by the end of the month. Good job for those who keep going there after.3 -
Eh, resolutions...For new years? Don't do them anymore. The less new years resolutions I create, the higher my chances to find what I'm looking for.3
