Welcome to a new month and new year. Whether you have been part of this community in the past or have just found us, I hope that you will find the support you need for 2018
The name of the thread is "Women Ages 50+" but all women are welcome.
For many people the beginning of a new month or a new year is a clean slate and an opportunity to begin new attitudes and behaviours.
The journey to ongoing health and fitness is best done with encouraging and supportive companions. I hope you will find them here.
December Resolutions (with end of the month comments)
*walk an average of 15,000 steps a day (done)
*scan photos and documents so they can be discarded (worked on this almost every day)
*weight training three days a week (12 times in December)
January Resolutions
*sort, organize, and discard line dance step sheets
*weight training three days a week
*write an understandable version of the pattern for the hat and scarf I just knit
*average 15,000 steps a day
Be sure to bookmark the page so you can find it again. Also sign your post with a name and location to make it more personal (it can be a nickname or screen name and a general location if you want to be more private).

Barbie, thank you so much for continuing this thread. I am truly enjoying getting to know everybody, and it's wonderful to have a forum where ladies with similar interests and issues can vent and get support and share!
I have decided that 2018 must be about me. I need to put me first, fuel my body with better food, exercise on a regular basis and go through a few rooms in the house that I have not really had a chance to get to since we moved. Our son and daughter in law are getting married in May. Yes, I know she's not really my daughter in law yet, but it's just easier to call her that now. Anyway, I already have a dress to wear, I bought it for something else but ended up not wearing it, and it's a lovely dress, soooooo ..... Problem is the dress will look much better if there is 30 lbs less of me in it, I was thinner when I bought it. So my goals for the next few months are to eat properly and (to borrow from WW) mindfully, to lose 6 lbs per month, weigh myself only once per week, and go to the gym 5 days per week. I work weekends and the gym is open about the same hours as I work, so that doesn't work. I can do a good bit of walking at work so will have to make sure I do that.
I know that losing a certain amount of weight in a certain amount of time shouldn't be a goal, and that I could be setting myself up for failure, but I'm going to give it a try!
Wendy, the beekeeping sounds fascinating! Lots of hard work for sure! Hope it all goes well for you.
Wishing you all a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!
Got my dime on a front windowsill!

Thank you Barbie, our infamous leader, for organizing this thread!
December goals for me were sparse, and pretty simple:
-make it thru the month.
Actually, it wasn't really declared on paper!
It was a tough month.
I now have a bunch of baking items, but I have vowed to put the items in healthy stuff.
I had such a good time having nuke son at home, but he reverted back to being a high school kid, playing way too much computer games, and sleeping in. We gave him the task of taking out the garbage, and hoofing grocery bags, like in high school, which he gladly did like a galumphing puppy! Other than that, no demands were put upon him. It was his leave time, so we let him be slug like.
These are my goals for January:

Kelly, we have around 400 hives this year and we are producing honey that is being exported to China, but we have been using a NZ buyer... This year we want to sell direct through our own export license and start getting paid better. Our goal is to eventually run 1500 hives. 400 is a lot of hives to run when you are already working a full-time job! We have got two girls that are working in the business part-time right now. This year we went into partnership with a wealthy investor who has built the honey factory on his property. As soon as the paperwork and certification come through, we will be extracting our honey there. This investor's daughter is one of the girls who is working part-time in the business. Some of our hives are on this investor's farm property, but a lot of our hives are put on "hive sites" that we lease on fairly short contracts. We really need to buy more land on which we can run our hives that will guarantee the sites as that is the one "weak link" in our business plan. Bee keepers are fighting fiercely for manuka sites and the rich companies are buying up land everywhere and offering land owners higher site fees to steal sites off the smaller beekeepers. We have also had to brand all our frames in an attempt to stop thieves. Hives are getting stolen by organized crime groups here. The other thing we are looking into is planting manuka bushes and having "manuka plantations" that will not only produce manuka honey but manuka oil. Lots of possibilities exist for expansion in various areas, including propolis and pollen, venom and royal jelly. Bee products are endless. So much to learn and try out... The future is looking bright and exciting. The present is a real struggle to meet endless bills and fix endless problems...LOL. Thank God for my faith and sense of humour!
Wendy
I hope it all works out for you!
I think some of the Tasmanian beekeepers experience similar things. I'm not sure what the situation is with the leatherwood here. Leatherwood is Tasmania's signature honey, and I know that some years it is harder to come by than others.

It's warm here too, but only about 20C. Not really warm enough for a pool ... although, that said, there were a few in swimming at the beach when I was down there jogging.
BTW - We've got several (at least 3) different protea bushes in our yard. Two are quite large. I understand that protea are a South African plant. Right now, one is not blooming, one is just finishing, and the third is starting.

You know, it really hurts me that Denise posts all these pictures on facebook of the placq that the people at Kennett Middle School made for her, but not one mention or picture of the placq that I had made for her. Personally, I think the placq that I had made for her is much nicer. The one they made is just plain writing, nothing special. Also, when I went to her apartment, what was hanging up? Not the placq that I had made for her.
Well, the apple pie turned out decent. Maybe my problem was either the fact that I was chunking up the pieces of apple and not slicing them or the fact that I was putting a lot of apples in the pie. I remember that my grandmother used to put a lot in her pie and it always turned out good.
Wendy - I couldn't believe that crime groups are stealing bee hives! That's really something.
Karen in VA - I know that I log at least one item each and every day. That day, Thanksgiving, Christmas were probably days when I didn't close out my account. Well...it's really not a big thing.
Got the cookies in the freezer to give to people. Finished up the apple pie (gave a lot to Ken & Lynette). Guess I'm feeling sort of blue today. Thinking about Bryan, too.

Goals for 2018 ... quite similar to last year's goals.
Cycle more than 2017. 2017's total was 6365 km. I want to cycle as much or more than that in 2018.
Complete Petite Year Round Randonneur. This is a challenge where we have to do a 50 km ride each month for a total of 600 km. Yeah, they reduced it from last year, so we might do the reduced amount or aim for what we did last year. The challenge started in November (that's when the Audax/Randonneuring year starts), so we've done 2 already.
We've done several CAM challenges (Century A Month, where we ride a 100 mile ride each month of the year), and, since we did it last year, we would like to do that again. Go for 24 months in a row! [edited by mods]
Complete Super Randonneur. A Super Randonneur is Audax/Randonneuring's standard series and the series which is required to qualify for longer rides in most cases. It consists of one ride each of 200 km, 300 km 400 km, and 600 km, each of which has to be completed within a certain time limit.
Complete a 1000 km randonnee. This might be a long-shot. However, if the 600 km event goes well, maybe …
One 1000 km month.
Cycle up Mt Wellington again.
Cycletouring.
Run a 10K event. If that goes well, maybe even try for a half marathon later in the year.
Walk a minimum of 1000 km, but hopefully beat last year's total of 1302.5 km.
Hike up a mountain or two.
Include some extra stuff like rowing, canoeing, weightlifting and maybe a bit of yoga. Improving my core strength and flexibility would probably be a good thing.
Complete at least 2 more courses at university.
Figure out what I want to do with my website ... and do it!
Travel ... of course. That's always on the list.

Barbie, it's nice to have someone like you to rely on. I like the idea that you have a same same morning routine where you even eat the same breakfast every day. My life is so complex and chaotic that no two days are ever the same, even in the morning! Speaking of chaos, my six weeks of empty nesting is at an end. My 19 year old daughter has moved back home after being kicked out of her boyfriend's house by his mother who couldn't stand her messiness! So there goes my peace and quiet and order that was just becoming established. But I am going to look on the bright side and hope my daughter breaks up totally with boyfriend when she realises what a mummy's boy he is, and how immature and unambitious...He is mid twenties and hasn't bothered to get his driver's license or a car yet, so she has had to do all the running around spending her money on gas. And he smokes pot which might explain the lack of ambition...so hoping this will be the end of their relationship. OMG, daughter number two has just walked in. Why is she here? Daughter number one was texting me last night saying they were in a big fight over 2's laziness and lack of respect for other's property...gotta go see if the New Year is starting with a double dose of chaos...

Machka, the only syncing i had with my period was that both my girls and i were all having our periods at the same time. we also had sinus infections at the same time. my poor husband. he either had to much estrogen going on or we were miserable with sinus infections. To this date even though Michelle and I live here together, if we have a sinus infection, Christina will still have one. And Trinity is in sync with her Mom and their periods. I just hope Ellie isn't the same although there is that strong probability.
Well I was to tired and busy yesterday so i didn't post. I am home!!!!!!! Went home yesterday afternoon. We all went out to supper together, Michelle, Christina and family. We had a 30% off at Bob Evans. How can you ignore something like that???????? Then we came back home and we all exchanged gifts. I had ordered a lot of stuff for Michelle from Amazon so she was surprised we gave her cash also. Charlie likes to give his girls $500 for Christmas. But then he labors over the fact that Michelle is single and Christina is married so it's not fair we give them the same. Then he remembers that Christina's husband and Michelle both have birthdays in December. So i think Michelle got about $350 and her sister $500. I hate it that he does that. Both girls knew their Dad would do it and made purchases considering the cash gifts that both Moms would be giving. But the look of surprise is worth it and i love seeing that. Paul loved the Google home I bought them. the grand daughters both know the Michelle takes them out to $5 below for Christmas. That is 2 gifts in one, the cash and getting to go out with a favorite aunt. And she guides them and makes sure she gets 'no nos' from their Mom before they go. Janet, everyone loved the ornaments!!!!! At first they gave me credit for making them. so I did give you the credit. Then yesterday we had our big celebration with mmy family. We have one new baby in the family but I don't trust my left arm to hold him so i misssed out on that. In the hospital there was enough taking blood pressure and IV's in the left arm that it was manipulated a lot and it hurts. I even took some Advil for it last night. But oh have I had 2 wonderful nights sleep!!!!!! It is so goof to sleep in your own pajamas, in your own bed, your own blanket, no interuption, your cat at the end of the bed. It is wonderful. My blood pressure has stayed good. I have one extra pill to take if it is above 150. But I also have my normal 5 other medicines for blood pressure. So so far it has been good.
Well it is now time to take that blood pressure and take my night time medicine and go to sleep.
Happy New Year guys. I have no traditions. I love the very inspirational posts from Barbie on the commandments, Becca's on the cup of tea and whoever did the ones on Bible. Grace and other word. Wonderful things to remember for the new year.
love you guys, night night, Joyce, Indiana where it is frigid.8 -
Thank you so much Barbie for your leadership and dedication to our group. I too want to say that I am happy to have found such an inspirational and supportive group of friends. Strangers from many lands connected by one common thread. Who knew???
I have not listed any monthly goals for some time, mine had become redundant to the point of meaningless. I've asked myself over and over how does this happen when I know what I need to do, I have the tools to do it and the greatest support system anyone could ask for. What is it that is holding me back? And the only answer is ME. I want to reap the benefits of a healthy life style without the sweat and work to achieve it.
For as far back as I can remember, I have never felt I was “good enough”. Always comparing myself to those around me, telling myself I'm not as intelligent, as well spoken, as wealthy, as pretty, as lucky (as if that is the cause of anybody's success), whatever it is at the moment......I come up short. I have no real explanation for these feelings of inadequacy yet they are legions in my mind.
Four years out from bariatric surgery and 125 pounds lost, I'm slowly seeing pounds creep back. I know I'm the only one that can put a stop to this trend. After much searching and not really finding one word to encompass all of this, I have chosen RENEW as my word for 2018 simply because one of the definitions I read was “breathe new life into”. Doesn't that sound magical???
Due to my lack of self-esteem and/or self-worth I'm often thrown off by criticism from others. Today I read the quote below and thought, that was meant for me for 2018.
"Don't be distracted by criticism. Remember--the only taste of success some people get is to take a bite out of you." --Zig Ziglar
Love you ladies and the best New Year to each one.

To start things off here is a photo of Greysyn trying to play Wipeout along with the Ventures.
Lisa - Thanks for your concern and advice. I am proceeding cautiously. It seems there is so much to do and I have no energy.
Machka - I could power 36 100 W light bulbs for a day. I hope to at least double that in 2018.
Rita - Cute grands and a very pretty day. I see you have a Grayson. Our grandson's name is the Irish version - Greysyn.
Barbara - He is the son of Mr. Ungrateful. He was 15 on December 10th. He is probably the most traditional of us all. He supervised the girls when they helped with the tree. Our tree has to go up the weekend before his birthday, theirs goes up after his birthday. He always has to spend New Year's Eve with us. I will treasure this as long as it lasts.
Evelyn - Greysyn has been my best buddy since he was born. We are very close and he has such a good heart. I do miss the 16 yr. old - Creedin in Richmond. These 2 grandsons are exceptional teenagers. Not that I am biased at all.
Rye - Cilantro bothers me no matter how much they try to disguise it. I have to wonder why such a foul taste even exists. Each to their own. Not everyone loves brussel sprouts, spinach and kohlrabi the way that I do.
Wendy - I am grateful for people like you and your husband who are keeping our bees thriving. They are so important to our earth.
Evie/Machka - I've sold Avon a few times in my life. I had cleared out 99% from my home when my sister moved here and started selling. I almost feel guilty if I don't buy from each campaign. Yes.....I can say people pleaser.
dr.katiebug - What is Spark? I need my caffeine also. Most consumed foods - coffee along with the vanilla and cinnamon that I put into it.
Today was a good day. Stayed in pjs until almost 2 pm. We cleaned together, changed our bed linens , etc.
We went to fill up the Toyota because the carbon tax starts now. You know what I mean if you are Albertan.
We had to boost the Toyota before we left and we warmed it up for 15 min. Turned it off at the gas station and it wouldn't start again. We got a boost and went to pick up the kids. Jheri picked up a few things from Costco for me so I got that also. She picked me up some Isotoner gloves because the mini knits don't cut it when dealing with extreme cold/snow.
We changed vehicles before going for a Chinese smorg.
Keira was thrilled and had fries and onion rings along with her spring rolls. She was in heaven when I told her she could have whatever she wanted from the dessert selection. Funny kid was most excited for the green and red jello. She asked if I could teach her Mom to make jello. Lol. Pretty sure that Jheri knows how and just chooses not to.
Greysyn and Larry were ecstatic over the crab legs and lobster.
We all thoroughly enjoyed it . It was funny that my sister, DBIL, brother and DSIL ended up at the same restaurant. Bev did not say a word about how they were spending the evening but Margaret had already told me. Bev seemed a litte embarassed. We would have declined an invite to bowl and play sets and runs but it would have been nice to have been considered and better if she had not tried to keep it a secret. What can I say? That's my sister. Tomorrow at my open house she will probably tell people that she doesn't play games.
We got home and Greysyn got out his guitar. I was happily surprised that he had brought it. We talked about the Ventures and soon he was playing their music on his phone. He has decided that he wants to learn Wipe Out. My cousin is going to bring the tab sheets? tomorrow. I need to listen to the CD that he gave me. We will do that in the morning. I have no photos from tonight of Keira. She was in constant motion so they were all blurry. I am glad that she likes music other than JOJo because that was starting to get to me.
So we went for Chinese food, listened to music, danced, watched "Boss Baby", told bad jokes and toasted the New Year about 9 p.m. with Canada Dry Ginger Ale ( the champagne of Gingerale) in wine glasses. It was a good night.
Keira requested one of the stories I make up when they have sleepovers. I started it out with Princess Keira and she said "Grandma, you can use Princess in the Story if I am a Warrior princess" Harmony couldn't join us as she was ill today. "Grandma, I miss Harmony but I sure do like having my alone time with you and Grandpa" I said that Greysyn was there also. She replies"Yes, but he doesn't require the attention that I do. Maybe I'll grow out of it" She is a funny girl.
Tomorrow we have pancakes as that is the tradition for sleepovers. I was going to make something in the slow cooker but that was quickly vetoed.

Happy New Year!
Not a good start to the Year in our household It started last week when grandson had an infection causing a seizure he's been in hospital - found out he had pneumonia which caused the high temperature causing the seizure, but he somehow knocked out two of his bottom teeth. Grandson was discharged yesterday and came to our house while his mum went back to his home to sort out his bed with new sheets etc. Poor Grandson was still very woozy and in pain with his mouth and the pneumonia, but they discharged him anyway. First DS car broke down on the way to our house so DD and I had to go and "rescue" them. I think the excitement was a bit too much because Grandson only wanted to sleep when he got here, he, woke up later and had a bit of soup. DS wasn't feeling too good himself so they both took themselves off to bed about 6:30 p.m. both were awake again around 10:30 pm and Grandson had some porridge (he's hardly eaten for 4 days and has lost weight) he seemed a little brighter too which was good. Off they went to bed again, but during the night poor DS was sick (not sure if it's a bug or a migraine that caused the sickness) What a night! Woken every few hours with either someone coughing or being sick. DD has got a really bad cough/cold - so far I'm feeling a bit off it, but managing to keep the cold bugs at bay (for now )
Things can only get better right?!
Hope the start of your New Year has been better.
Well I need to get sorted and see to the invalids - think I will go around the bathroom with the disinfectant and sterilise everything, just to be on the safe side.
Have a wonderful 1st January .

Barbie - Thank you, it gives a lift to my heart every time we begin a new month, a clean slate, a chance to begin again today. And this time, a New Year, as well... So glad you're here and that you keep doing what you do.
Joyce - so glad you're home! Happy New Year, dear friend.
Viv - I'm sorry it was a rough start to the New Year...
Ours was pretty peaceful, all things considered. The two-year-old went to sleep without issue, for a change, but her door was open when I got up for coffee, so she's in her mom's bed. Dad will change that when he gets back, but for now, it gives them both comfort, I think.
The six-year-old will be home today after five days of being incommunicado, in the company of the crapweasel sperm donor (glad you like the description, Katla, it's way too apt for comfort). The man doesn't even allow his son to call his mother when he's with him for less than a week. It's court-mandated that he must when he has him for longer periods, or he wouldn't do it then, either. I'm very careful not to use the description in front of the boy... not his fault who fathered him.
My word for 2018 is BALANCE. And all the rest of them, too... ALL the words. Will be writing as much as I can this year, not a New Year's resolution, just an acknowledgment of the reality.
Love y'all, and happy to be with you going into the New Year,

Toward the end of the ride, we stopped at one of our favourite places ... Fish Frenzy, a fish and chips place. I get a wrap (with lots of veg) and chips. While we were there, I took a shot of our view ...
There were a lot of yachts in because of the Sydney to Melbourne race.
And then we came home and I cleaned that cupboard I've been meaning to do, and another one as well. This is the way I accomplish things. I need to break it down to a task that will take me a relatively short amount of time, and do a little bit each day.
Now I'm relaxing with a cup of choc mint rooibos tea ... one that has quickly become a favourite of mine. I have to return to work tomorrow so my next cup of tea will be chamomile so that I can sleep tonight.

Barbie Thank you so much for starting us off in the New Year together. This thread is a lifeline.
I fell asleep last night, awoke with 30 seconds to go to the New Year, sleepily raised a pretend glass at MN, & promptly went back to sleep. I'm the life of the party - NOT.
Today will be low key, puttering, naps, soup, etc. Nothing challenging or stressful. Tomorrow is soon enough to get back to the grind.

Did well with my sleep goals.
I have slept through without waking up from 6-8 hours.
The neighbors did have a party that woke me up when they all went home. I was able to get back to sleep. It took them about an hour to all leave. Total sleep was 8.5 hours.
Goals:
8 hours of solid sleep
Proper exercise and diet:
Less sugar by reading labels
Keep myself moving and visit Y 12 times a month
Words to guide me Grace, Grounded, Kindness

Very stressful night with loud fireworks going on so close to us that we could hear them in the house. Bessie was terrified and it took all of Jake's skill to get her out to pee. We didn't fall asleep until after midnight. The noise is gone this morning so after a bit of coaxing I was able to get the dogs moving on the before breakfast walk. When I got back from the late night dog walk, I discovered that the battery on my pedometer was dead so I replaced it and then this morning I was unsuccessful at synching my pedometer with my computer so I don't have the data from December stored as I expected. I love technology except when it decides to not work correctly,
I will count on meditation and more dog walking in my quiet neighborhood to get me back on track.

Hello everyone and Happy New Year.
One of my New Year resolutions is to join this group, so hear I am. I'm 52years old and live in East Tennessee.
Like many people I "put it in neutral" during the holidays and use the new year to get back on track. I stepped on the scale today, for the first time since Thanksgiving, to find I'm only up 4 pounds. That's good news for me.
My goals for January are:
Join a weekly yoga class to improve my form during my home DVD yoga.
Hit the gym at least twice a week. I have a lovely retired high school gym teacher who has created a workout route for me, now it's up to me to do it.
Get back into quilting. We've lived in the new house now for almost 3 year and I still haven't finished set up my quilting room! I've let work consume me but I woke up to 8 degrees this morning so now I'm thinking quilts for Christmas presents this coming December.
Wishing the best to everyone,
Debbie in East Tennessee.10 -
Welcome, Debbie, I hope you'll keep coming back. Your goals sound achievable. We'll look forward to photos of your quilting as you complete a project. We love to see creative projects.2

Barbie Thanks for keeping us going! Even though you had a tech glitch, you walked those miles and miles and miles and those doggies are glad you did, whether it gets stored in 0s and 1s!!!
Joyce So glad you are home and feeling better. Nothing nicer than your own jammies and your own bed!
Planning on a lovely last day of vacation with a happy to do list to get started on the right foot. I really vegged out this vacation and didn't put any social pressures on me aside from visting family. Looking forward to my work structure, it will help me get back to real meal planning - I'm making my lentil soup today and also, little mini muffin quiche's with leftovers from the fridge. This makes for an on the go breakfast or late snack; they are protein filled and little. No cookies, cakes, or candies in my house--yippee.
Karen VA as a string player, I heartily approve of your word for 2018--PLUCK!! ha! Reminds me of the
ee cumings poem about harp players, goes like this: To be a harp player, takes lot of pluck, a long black gown and a truck

Good Morning Ladies - new here, but I've read so many of your posts, I feel like I've already started to get to know you all. Love that you all seem to be spread out around the world, but know each other like neighbors. A little about me - I'm in NJ, USA - near Atlantic City. I'm 51, married, self-employed, with 4 kids, although with the youngest 14 and the oldest 21, I guess they aren't really kids anymore. About 6 years ago I had lost about 100 pounds over 3 years doing WW, but something mentally stopped me from going under that 200 lb mark, and I slowly put it all back on, finding plenty of excuses, until I find myself where I am today - with 135 lbs to lose. I'm encouraged that I found this group - the first one I stumbled upon, I think it fate. I joined MFP because I wanted somewhere to track my carbs. My husband and I will be married 22 years in 5 days. He has been traveling on vacation since Thanksgiving - right now in Medelin, Columbia. We both love to travel, but since the kids are in school - he is going it alone right now. One day when the kids are all grown and settled, we'll most likely retire outside the USA - way too expensive to live here.
