What was your first “I’m getting fat” realization?

For some reason these realizations give me more fuel to stick to eating healthy!
Mine was my mood. I realized I’ve been feeling constantly moody/insecure. Great marriage, work is fine, same amount of money stress. So what is the problem? Looking back at photos of me with the huge smile, I realized I have gained a crap ton of weight! How can I smile like that when my clothes hardly fit me? I refuse to buy new outfits in a bigger size! Determined to lose this weight
How about you?

My UK size 14's were getting too tight and I didn't want to go up another size.13

Someone called me a fat@ss.
That'll change how you view yourself
For some reason the size 16 skirts didn't do it for me the way that comment did.35 -
Yep, jeans too tight.6

I went to the doctor's and saw the scale had went up from 118 to 165 lbs. I knew I had put on weight, was buying X-Larges instead of the XS/Smalls... but it didn't truly sink in until I saw that number pop up. I went home and joined MFP, but it took another year for me to be ready to start my weight loss journey and actually commit to it.23

I bought some new clothes that I thought looked great on me. I took a few pictures of myself because I was feeling so confident... and promptly deleted them. I looked like a whale.24

Pictures from a vacation and then going to the doctor not long after that and seeing a number that was about 30lbs higher than the last time I'd been there... huge wake-up call, and that number also happened to be the most I've ever weighed in my life. I knew my clothes weren't fitting great but I didn't realize I had gained THAT much weight. I was spending a lot of time in leggings and baggy T-shirts and just not realizing how big I had actually gotten. But I'm very aware now! And finally going in the other direction!16

tight shirt/pants, getting out of breathe walking down to the basement to do laundry.5

Any time I mention going to the gym or doing something active and someone’s like “oh you do that?”
Yes. My potato body moves.58 -
Didn't really have one...I was pretty lean most of my life and in my teens and early 20s I was actually pretty much rail skinny and had difficulty holding onto weight. I put some quality weight on in my mid 20s...some muscle, some fat and was happy not to be a stick figure anymore.
I put my bad weight on from 30-38 after I graduated college and took a desk job working long hours with lots of out of town travel. I actually didn't really notice it much...or I should say that I didn't really pay it any attention.
I went to the doctor for my annual physical when I was 38 and came out with some really nasty blood work...pre-diabetic, triglycerides over 400, very high cholesterol and blood pressure around 170/110 and the doctor told me that I was officially obese per BMI at 5'10" and 220 Lbs and well on my way to being very sick, if not dead by 60.
My decision to lose weight and get back into fitness and eating better was more health related than anything...at the time I had a 2 year old and a new born and the thought of not being around for them scared the *kitten* out of me.
That was over 5 years ago...at that time I was a 2-3 PAD smoker who could barely walk the dog around the block without feeling like I was going to die...now I'm a fitness junkie who doesn't smoke cigarettes and enjoys doing 1/4 and 1/2 century bike rides just because it's the weekend and 15ish% bf with all bad blood work reversed. Still on blood pressure meds, but they are much reduced and my BP is well under control now. I've maintained my weight loss going on 5 years this spring.
ETA; at my highest weight, my wife started making comments as well...not really negative, just more worrisome...41 -
When my pants needed un-button9

back in my 'FAT' wardrobe and the seats on the plane felt much snugger and I travel a lot with work !!8

Tight pants and my face is getting plump. I'm looking dowdy again.8

When I would smile for a picture then look at the picture and my eyes disappeared into my large and round face13

My first "I'm getting fat" moment was when the shirt in that picture couldn't button closed. I ignored it and wore bigger shirts. Mentally, I just wasn't ready to be smaller than medium.11

Pre-diabetes. My doctor telling me to glue my lips shut or gain another 40 lbs and get surgery. The only clothes I could fit were my 6'3" 260 lb husband's clothes. My parents and friends thinking I was hiding a pregnancy. Everyone telling me what a *kitten* I became since I gained weight... and me realizing they were right.18

When I realized that my first thought when I saw pictures of what should have been great memories with my kids was "Ugh, I look awful."
I want to be able to have memories that are unencumbered and I don't want to pass on my *kitten* eating habits and crappy self worth on to my kids.16 -

Yeah. Kinda this. I was out with family, celebrating a birthday, and rocking a cute outfit (I thought). Saw the pictures afterwards...
That was years ago, and I'm still trying to get my kittens sorted.9 -
Tight pants and puffed up face .
ETA : Oh and when my comfy ,loose jeans became too tight .12 -
Having trouble keeping the tray down on the airplane (my stomach kept pushing it back up)13

Same! I bought a super cute dress for a holiday party a few years ago and felt super confident in it. I saw a photo posted on Facebook the next day and I looked like a sack of potatoes next to my colleagues. I started the day after that pic was posted and never looked back.

Mine was when I walked upstairs in my home, I was light headed and had to sit in the top step. Leaning against the wall trying to control my breathing my only thought was "I'm so fat". I had been able to ignore the button extender I used on pants but almost passing out going upstairs was the slap in the face I needed.15

The kids in 5th grade made fun of me when we had to do public weigh ins and I was the heaveiest girl in the class by quite a bit, when I hadn't been in 4th grade.16

A favorite cocktail dress that fit me well a couple of years ago now doesn't...3

New stretch marks that had nothing to do with getting taller!11

It was always a photo caught me by surprise. My confidence has always been quite high, I used to joke that I had body promorphia in that I could always thought I looked better than I actually did.25

Sadly I got to an all time high weight of 260 and never really had a YOU are fat moment. I was never one of those people who was self conscious about my weight. I struggled with weight most of adult life but I was still the same outgoing BIG personality person at a normal weight as I was at an obese weight. My ah ha moment was when my husband came home from the drs with a prescription for Cholesterol meds. I was like nope, not gonna happen, we are changing our lifestyle RIGHT NOW! That was 11/28/16 and we haven't looked back since. we lost a combined 140lbs and we are still working the healthy lifestyle change. The sad part, is I still see ME in the mirror not the 72lb lighter me. Something wrong with me, I know LOL33

I knew it was happening, I just ignored it. When everyone else tries to lose a few pounds before vacations, I just bought bigger clothes.
We booked a trip to Ireland in February. I want to be able to take pictures with my family and knew that my face was so fat I would delete them all. Then, on a camping trip with my family and another family, my friend and I talked about losing weight together since I knew time was running short before we head to Ireland. All in when we got home. Then she posted pictures and if gave me extra motivation to kick it into gear. I've lost 30 lbs since the end of October, and she lost 21. Now we booked a beach vacation so I am motivated to keep going.

When everyone in high school was shopping at American Eagle/Abercrombie and I realized I could only shop at Lane Bryant. I was always bigger but that was when I really noticed.10
