GOING BALD ON KETO! HELP

Hey everyone!!!
I've been on keto for 3 months now and my hair shedding won't stop! When I look directly in the mirror...I can see my scalp! I've always had super thick hair so this is freaking me out!

1000 biotin daily....higher dose breaks me out too much
doing 5%,25%,70% for my 1700 calories...pls help! Any suggestions advice feedback stories experience would be much appreciated!!!!

This is the problem with keto, unless you're eating offal it's virtually impossible to get what your body needs.
I'd stop and eat a balanced diet to your calorie goal.41 -
Your body is lacking nutrients. Despite eating keto you must be eating very low calorie.
As above has said it could be lack of fats. Also lack of fruit and veg will have an impact.11 -
Wow Iv had the opposite with low carb eating. Deffo need to investigate what nutrients you’re missing out on3

Keto isn't necessary for weight loss, only keeping a calorie deficit is. If that's what's causing your hair loss, drop it like a bad habit!20

This OP. How many calories are you eating a day? See a doctor.7 -
Maybe come off of keto then? It's possible you are eating too few calories or missing other nutrients that your body needs.9

You don't have to do keto. Just eat everything but stay at your calorie goal to lose weight.2

Hair loss during diets is not unusual since your body is trying to preserve nutrients when it feels it's starving. Although, if it's as dramatic as you seem to suggest you might want to talk to your doctor to make sure their isn't something else going on.9

Get off the Keto. Get more fats every day. It will take a few weeks to see an improvement.5

i agree with wheelhouse. see your doctor and get a blood test to see if there are any nutritional deficiencies. but if keto is working for you with the weight loss, don't give up. i had a brief stint there also of losing hair when i showered around the 3 month mark as well. but keep it up with the supplements, maybe also add collagen to your diet. it is most likely temporary.16

I had the same problem on a very low calorie Low carb diet a few years ago. I quit the diet and in a few months my hair seemed to come back.7

1700 cals (the number is included in the OP) is unlikely to be the problem so if the only thing that changed was switching to keto then I'd certainly revert to a more standard macro split A.S.A.P.15

I am almost wonder if they aren't taking in a lot of veggies, which is limiting their ability to get adequate micronutrients.10 -
Your thyroid needs 100g of carbohydrates to work well. If you are losing your hair, then your thyroid has likely been compromised.

Quick fixes:- Raise your carb level to at least 100g a day PERMANENTLY!!!
- Take an iodine supplement via a sea vegetable capsule (http://www.seaveg.com/shop/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=16)
- Take a desiccated thyroid supplement (https://www.nutri-meds.com/Nutri_Meds_Desiccated_Bovine_Thyroid_Capsules_p/nm-g-btc.htm)
Use the supplements for at least 90 days. Check your heart rate. It should stay below 80 bpm. If it goes higher discontinue the supplements.

Are you still breast feeding ? Did you do your research regarding KETO and breastfeeding? You need carbs for your body.5

The OP recently gave birth and on keto? I've never been pregnant but I have heard from relatives that some women's hair grows very fast and thick while pregnant. Perhaps this is just the slowdown of it?6 -
If OP recently gave birth it could be due to that and not the keto. Hair loss isn't unheard of postpartum. However, I'd suggest having bloodwork done to make sure you're not missing any essential nutrients. Also, I'm not sure keto is a good diet for breastfeeding.8

Your hair is falling out. In other words, what you're doing to your body is so unhealthy it's acting like you're on chemo!
Yes, hair loss can happen postpartum, but usually not enough to where you're going bald.
If you're breastfeeding, yet refusing to eat certain nutrients, you're compromising the quality of your breast milk and shortchanging your child.
What you're doing is irresponsible and wrong. Knock it off and go to the doctor.16 -

Echoing others: Dr appointment/bloodwork.
Note: my dr said my results were perfect- no anemia, no thyroid issues, etc. but I don't think she tested for all vitamin/mineral definiciencies (likely bc she tried to tell me your hair changes as you age. I pretended i couldn't hear her (I'm older than you!).
Try Viviscal, it a supplement. WM seems to be cheapest- it takes at least 3 months to show improvement, but there is NO quick fix. (I'm not doing keto but was having hair issues, too.) I just finished 31 days, and can see improvement already (less shedding/seems a little thicker @ roots).
You might want to look into seeing a dietician/nutritionist to make sure you are eating what you need to be eating.
There is no scientific proof that biotin will do much (though LOTS of people say it helped them. Stuff I've read indicates that unless you are deficient in biotin, you are wasting your money and will be disappointed, ymmv.0 -
One additional note. You should see a doctor before seeing a doctor. While water soluble vitamins aren't an issue, there are a lot of supplements that can cause issues if you over supplement.0

DO not take iodine supplements or thyroid supplements! You shouldn't mess with these things.9 -
Are you counting carbs or NET carbs? I only ask because I’ve seen friends attempt keto and do much better when they switched to NET (carbs minus fiber) because they weren’t eating enough veggies and getting enough micronutrients counting carbs alone with the keto goal being to keep them so low.0

I missed the breastfeeding part. I agree. This isn’t the time to be going keto.

Sure. I always get my nutritional advice from dentists who have been dead for 70 years.14 -
If 25% of 1700 calories is protein, that works out to a hair over 100 grams per day, which might be enough protein. If she's doing a few hundred calories of cardio exercise per day, that will push up her protein needs and she's then insufficient.
OTOH if hair shedding was an issue before keto see a doctor.2
