Your thyroid needs 100g of carbohydrates to work well. If you are losing your hair, then your thyroid has likely been compromised.

Quick fixes:- Raise your carb level to at least 100g a day PERMANENTLY!!!
- Take an iodine supplement via a sea vegetable capsule (http://www.seaveg.com/shop/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=16)
- Take a desiccated thyroid supplement (https://www.nutri-meds.com/Nutri_Meds_Desiccated_Bovine_Thyroid_Capsules_p/nm-g-btc.htm)
Use the supplements for at least 90 days. Check your heart rate. It should stay below 80 bpm. If it goes higher discontinue the supplements.
DO not take iodine supplements or thyroid supplements! You shouldn't mess with these things.
Second that, blood work first will determine if you need this. If you are eating iodized salt you should never have an issue and taking too much iodine is dangerous. Now if you end up with a goitre then you can worry about iodine.3 -

Sure. I always get my nutritional advice from dentists who have been dead for 70 years.
Based on my love for dentists this might actually make more sense than a live one.5 -
If it were me, I would stop the keto immediately. Hair takes a long, long time to regrow, and keto isn't necessary for weight loss. Besides which it's not a great idea while breastfeeding.
See a doctor. Have your thyroid checked. Since you recently had a baby, it's worth mentioning that many woman see hair thinning after pregnancy - pregnancy delays the natural process of hairs falling out when they get old, and when the pregnancy effects end all those hairs that would have fallen out in the past months come out at one time. If that's all it is, it will sort itself out in time.1 -
Wow, so sorry this is happening! If it were me, I'd get off the keto immediately and make an appointment to see my doctor. If you can't see the doctor immediately, I'd also immediately up calories to maintenance and try to balance out my diet. If that slows or stops the hair loss, great, if not, then hopefully your doctor will be able to diagnose the issue. Good luck.1

I have hair loss issues and all the doctors do is eliminate your thyroid as a issue. They often don't have a clue. Get a thyroid blood test to check it. I use generic Rogaine from Walmart and my hair loss stopped, and is growing back in. It is well worth the cost...about $7/month. I have resolved this to be permanent for me. Maybe hormonal. I 'll never know but at least I am fighting to keep my hair. BTW, Rogaine is not for every hair loss problem. Read the instructions to compare your loss pattern to what it helps with.4

She is breast feeding, so she needs to consult her Dr before adding drugs while breastfeeding.
You could well be malnourished. And yes diseases like endocrine disorders can be at play here. So I only have one suggestion for you, next stop is to the Dr soon as you can get inand bring your baby with you (because if you are malnourished it does affect your breast milk).

There are many medical reasons (including around 30 diseases) why you might be losing hair, some of them serious. Amateurs here, some of them with an axe to grind with medicine, aren't equipped to diagnose your problem or recommend a solution. See:

The OP recently gave birth and on keto? I've never been pregnant but I have heard from relatives that some women's hair grows very fast and thick while pregnant. Perhaps this is just the slowdown of it?
I'll confirm that postpartum hair loss is very real, and quite normal. IF that is the culprit, it's really nothing to worry about. I lost a ton of hair after both my pregnancies. However, losing to the point of being able to see your scalp isn't typical. I second, third, fourth all the advice to consult your doctor, OP.5 -

About 4 weeks post partum my hair started to fall out...fast. I had a few very thin patches (my hair is usually very thick to I freaked out) and then the hair loss stopped and it grew back. Whole process took about 8 months...0 -

I am almost wonder if they aren't taking in a lot of veggies, which is limiting their ability to get adequate micronutrients.
Seeing the macros would help since keto is lower protein too.

OP, hair loss is definitely consistent with the aftermath of giving birth. My daughter is 5 months post partum and has thick hair like yours. At this point she has lost a lot of hair on both sides around her hairline so that her scalp is visible, but it's starting to grow back now. Check with your doctor, and I'll bet that's what they'll tell you.

I also started losing my hair after about 5 months on keto. Scared me to death. I made a doc appt but figured there was a good chance it was my diet. I upped my carbs and in about a month my hair stopped falling out. Doc couldn't find any issues with my blood work.

I'm going to echo postpartum hair loss, how long ago did you give birth?? You lose little to no hair during pregnancy, then shortly after birth (about 6 weeks for me personally), it all starts coming out in chunks it feels like. I truly believe that's why most women chop it off after having kids. It's why I do. Once it starts growing back it's obviously uneven in several spots, might as well cut to try and match. It does come back though.0

Ketogenic diets do not typically cause hair loss. Meat, seafood, eggs, nuts, seeds, veggies, olives, avocados and coconut are typically higher in nutrients. and the micronutrients in animal products are often more bioavailable than in plant sources, so even if you eat fewer you body will be able to use a bit more of it. Also, micronutrient needs is generally set for a higher carb diet. Those doing low carb have different needs than those eating higher carb.
Weight loss is stressful to the body and can cause hair loss. When I was losing weight my hair thinned a bit about 2-3 months in. Now in maintenance for over 2 years, my hair is thicker than before I started keto. I know this because I have autoimmune issues that thinned my hair in the past and my pony tail is noticeably thicker than it was 3 years ago.
Autoimmune issues can cause hair loss too. Celiac disease caused my hair to thin, and so did hypothyroidism. If you can treat autoimmune issues (for me it was gluten free and taking appropriate thyroid meds) that can improve hair health.
Other health issues can affect it too. I had become prediabetic and addressing hat (reversing it and controlling it) improved my hair and skin.
I did not see the OP say they had a young baby but I ditto the hair loss that can follow a birth. Hair loss slows dramatically while pregnant. Postpartum you lose the hairs your would have normally shed. I remember getting actual quarter sized almost bald spots on my head a few months postpartum... and then little spiky tufts sticking up as it grew back in again.
I do doubt it is keto that is causing hair loss. On a keto diet protein is typically moderate, and for all, carbs are not essential in any way, if you are worried that low carb is causing the problem, then stop doing it. I would address other issues (thyroid, low calories, postpartum hair loss) first but if you think more carbs will fix it, then eat more carbs.

Post partum hair loss is normal. I experienced hair loss again after losing 50 lbs due to hormones balancing out (decrease in fat - decrease in estrogen).
I have long hair that's pretty fuzzy on top because of the new hair growing back. Get some good hairspray
It doesn't hurt to check in with your doctor though to rule out any other causes.0 -
If - big IF - OP is actually at 25% protein on a 1700 Calorie diet, she's taking in ~125 g a day. So lack of Calories and/or protein and/or fat (because keto) isn't the issue.
So, yeah - talk to your doctor about this.3 -
I would recommend stopping the keto and see your doctor for a good checkup and blood work to be sure there isn't medical reason (besides the nutrition) causing your hair loss.
I don't now (and have never had the desire to) do keto, but if it is what's causing your hair loss your gonna have to decide if it's really worth it to you. Maybe try eating a less restrictive diet (as far as what foods/macros you allow) and just stay within your allotted calories. Keto isn't necessary for weight loss.0 -

Actually you don't need carbs for breastfeeding. What you need is adequate calories and hydration. I breastfed my youngest son until he was 21 months while doing a ketogenic diet (50g) for symptoms of gestational diabetes that did not leave and was trying to become prediabetes. I didn't start balding. Later, after regaining some weight, I went keto for 1.5 years to lose all my weight. I didn't start balding then either.

Weight loss is a stressor and childbirth is a stressor. This causes the body to stop hair growth for a time. When it's ready, it sheds all the "paused" hair at once. Seems like a lot. Mine thinned out quite a bit when I lost 80ish pounds later. It's still thinner. You can see more of my scalp than you used to. But it stopped. This is all normal for any "diet."
Hair thinning is common. Starting to get bald spots on ANY diet isn't normal.
Eat enough calories, especially while breastfeeding.
Protein: Keto is moderate protein, not low, so you might want to rob from your fat and give it to protein. Protein trumps everything.
If you are eating enough calories and getting enough nutrients and still balding, then you need to see your doc about this.2 -
My hair started falling out 3 months post-partum. I've got a ridiculous amount of hair so I was actually kind of happy to have it be a little more manageable...at first. It kept on going for a month--huge nests of it every time I washed my hair--and I was starting to really freak out by the time it stopped.
I'd definitely check in with your doctor, but I wouldn't panic if you've given birth fairly recently (and especially if you didn't already experience excessive hair loss during the pregnancy). Mention your goals, macros, supplements and breastfeeding just in case anything is "off," and fingers crossed that nothing is!0 -

I started losing my hair because I was losing weight too rapidly, sometimes 2 to 2.5 pounds per week. If this is what you are doing, slow down your rate of loss to no more than 1 pound a week.0

there's a misunderstanding hun as I weaned my baby in May 2017 when she turned 2! I wasn't even keto then lol

Thanks for following up and letting everyone know the update, and glad to hear your labs were normal! Hopefully the hair loss issue gets resolved soon. I don't really have any suggestions that haven't already been posed (perhaps evaluating protein intake and whether it may be low) and I'm definitely not a doctor, just wanted to wish you well. What's your height and weight?
Are you eating back most of your exercise calories?
These things are important.
There are plenty of good reasons not to do Keto, but we also need to discount over-exercising/under-eating, which is often a cause of hair loss.

You should see a dermatologist. It could be due any number of things, anemia, alopecia, stress, etc. A dermatologist would probably have more experience dealing with this vs. a general practitioner.0

So your goal is 1700, what are you actually eating? How much protein are you eating?
5%, 25%, 70% r my macro ratios for carbs protein and fat respectively. I just increased my calories to 1800!
