Keto and Intermittent fasting is working!

I’m 61 and it’s been years since I’ve been able to budge the scale. I was introduced to Keto late in 2017 and lost 10 pretty quickly, to my surprise and delight! Kept it off over Christmas. This month (Jan 2018) was a on plateau until I added intermittent fasting (no food between 6:30-7pm until 9:30-10am) and the numbers are quickly moving south again! So happy!

It's great that you are accidentally creating a deficit but your macro split or meal timing doesn't have anything to do with your success. Are you tracking? or just avoiding carbs and fasting?15

Good for you! Just understand what happened. Reducing carbs made you lose water weight and/or reduce calorie intake, there's nothing magical about keto. Likeways, not eating all day just reduces your food intake by default. 14 1/2 to 15 1/2 hours is not long enough to be considered intermittent fasting, but IF is just not eating all the time, aka normal eating, which should result in normal weight, eventually.12

The initial water weight loss as a result of switching to keto can be a great motivator - but keep in mind it will return as soon as you reintroduce carbs to your diet.
Keto and IF aren't a magic bullet, but if they're helping you keep at a calorie deficit and you enjoy this way of eating, go for it!4 -

No, it's not about insulin. Fung and Taubes are highly mistaken and use a lot of pseudoscience mumbo-jumbo to insist insulin is the cause of obesity. They're also the laughingstock of all evidence-based researchers who actually do have an understanding of how physiology works.
The insulin theory of obesity is a big load of bollocks, and they know it. But it sells a lot of books and products for them, which is what they're really all about.21 -

I don't feel deprived, I've lost and kept the weight off. I had a full pre-op workup last month and my doctor told me I'm his healthiest patient. So, it's been amazing, thanks!5 -

Not all people can keep a healthy weight by merely abiding by CICO. If you can maintain a healthy weight and system doing that, you are in the minority. Many can lose, few can keep it off.21 -

CICO is the energy balance equation. It is immutable. You cannot create energy from nothing or make ingested energy disappear. There is no insulin fairy waiting to magically store bodyfat.

1) The insulin hypothesis has been widely debunked as a steaming pile of poo.
2) The fact that there is a variance in CO due to some conditions has nothing to do with the validity of CICO.
3) Maintaining healthy weight has to do with a number of behavioral/psychological factors. The fact that people get fat again proves, rather than disproves, the validity of CICO. They get fat because they slack off and start eating more and/or moving less after they've lost the weight.5 -

All of those numbers you quoted are estimates. They have no precision. They cannot be used as evidence of anything.

The initial water weight loss as a result of switching to keto can be a great motivator - but keep in mind it will return as soon as you reintroduce carbs to your diet.
Keto and IF aren't a magic bullet, but if they're helping you keep at a calorie deficit and you enjoy this way of eating, go for it!

It's all about what makes it easier to stick with it.
Being consistent is key. If eating meat and eggs keeps you satiated and keeps you in a deficit, right on. If eating rice and potatoes does it for you, cool. Losing weight is different than eating healthy. If you only ate 30 apples in one day, you'd gain weight. If you only ate 2 Big Macs, you'd lose weight.
I did Keto for awhile and liked how it controlled my cravings. I wanted to be a bit more flexible and allow for whatever food choice I wanted while staying under a weekly deficit. It is very liberating to be able to eat whatever you want but also to know how to manipulate calories on a weekly basis to allow for some freedom here and there.1
