Keto and Intermittent fasting is working!

I find it unfortunate that some members on this board found the need to turn this into a debate thread. Last I checked this was posted on "Food and Nutrition." and not "Debate: Health and Fitness." You guys really need to stop it with the dietary egos and appreciate the fact that @mbjo has found a diet that works for her. Is it water weight? Decrease in fat percentage? Decrease in skeletal muscle mass? None of us know and none of us need to know if she is just focusing on the weight itself.
@mbjo Congratulations on you're achievement! Please don't let the negative banters here scare you from the lifestyle. The only thing that matters is that you found a diet that works for you! I've been doing keto since 2015 and had a good improvement in my fat percentage. It also made my hypoglycemia non-existant and fixed a lot of other issues I had with the traditional american diet such as mood swings and difficulties focusing in school. So you're not alone! There's plenty of members in this community who adopted keto as well. If you're interested, there is a fantastic youtube channel that provides an abundance of tips to staying on track and enjoying keto:

Keep up the great work!!!17 -

Calories in . Calories out? How then does this work:
One month average calorie intake with all things not premeasured and calories specified or weighed. All things recorded on MFP. Calories in:1623. Average daily calorie burn over same month 4724 (per fitbit). Calorie calculator for calories in calories out for my stats(age, weight, ht, activity (3 to 5 days per week activity and I do a lot of activity) to lose a healthy 8 pounds in a month are: 1632 calorie intake. Amount lost on just CICA for said month: 4 pounds on the dot.
Not. Everyone. Is. The. Same. Do. What Works.
Stop telling people you know what is best for everyone.
All of those numbers you quoted are estimates. They have no precision. They cannot be used as evidence of anything.
You. Lack. A. Fundamental. Understanding. Of. The. Subject.

It's the only way of eating that works for me and helps me shed body fat quickly. I'm surprised how few actually understand the hormonal role of insulin in weight gain and weight loss. Insulin is the fat storage hormone and is spiked highest when we eat carbs and high levels of protein but not when we eat fats. It also blocks the fat burning hormone in our bodies. When we reduce carbs and our frequency of eating then it drives our insulin levels low and that triggers our fat burning hormone to start releasing fat from our body fat stores for energy. Many people who struggle to lose weight and who gain it easily when they eat carbs are insulin resistant like myself. Type 2 diabetes runs in my family and I have avoided it by maintaining this way of eating. Dr. Jason Fung does a great job explaining this process on you-tube.17

Except that Fung’s crackpot pseudoscientific theories have been completely debunked by reputable researchers who actually understand the subject and aren’t just being controversial to sell books and earn fame.
Fung is a laughingstock in the evidence-based research world. He’s the poster child for how to cherry pick research and twist results to fit his agenda.
Intermittent fasting and keto work the same way any other diet does for weight loss. If you eat less calories than you burn, in whatever way one chooses to do it, you lose weight.
[ETA:] It would seem that you don't actually understand the hormonal role of insulin in weight gain and weight loss (which is not at all surprising if you've been relying upon Fung's drivel). Here is an unbiased, evidence-based research review by James Krieger (with plenty of peer-reviewed research linked) regarding what insulin actually is and what it does: https://weightology.net/insulin-an-undeserved-bad-reputation/
And here is an evidence based review which scientifically debunks Fung's theories: https://www.myoleanfitness.com/evidence-caloric-restriction/7 -

You seem to be the one who doesn't understand the hormonal role of insulin. Firstly, it's not "the fat storage hormone". It neither stores fat nor is it the only hormone. It transports nutrients into cells. That's its job.
Insulin is like a truck on demand. If there's stuff to transport somewhere it comes and does just that. If there's nothing to transport it doesn't.
If you want to build a house, does it matter how often a truck drives by or does it matter how much material it brings with it?
Another thing. People like you who post this kind of stuff seem to not understand that fat storage and fat burning is SUPPLY AND DEMAND DRIVEN. Your body doesn't just store or burn fat because it feels like it, it does so because it has to. If too much glucose or triglycerides are circulating through your blood storage is driven to bring them down to a normal level. If there's too low, more is released from your storage to be used by your cells so you can, you know, stay alive. This happens many times all throughout the day, every day.6 -

Exactly! I honestly believe the "magical" aspect of Keto is reduction in cravings/hunger. Anyone can lose weight on a calorie restricted diet, but the person that doesn't feel like they want to eat the world and can maintain. Why can't some people just accept that keto works for a lot of people, so to each his own.
That’s what many people seem to miss. We don’t care that people do it and are glad to to see that something works for people. The reason people get defensive is because people spread misinformation about keto and IF. No matter the diet, it all boils down to the calories.
With the spread of misinformation people wind up trying these diets and then end up over eating and not losing at all.
I wholeheartedly support any and all safe diets that allow people to feel good and reach their goals.
I personally reach all of my goals by doing flexible dieting. I’m currently sitting in camp eating carb loaded chocolate chip cookies. With no detriment to my goals. Not feeling restricted or starved in anyway.
It isn't all about calories. It is about insulin.
If you don't care how others lose and keep off weight WHY diss them so hard? Maybe you are the misinformed one. How's calorie restriction working for the vast amount of people out there?
Wrong. Insulin CANNOT create energy from nothing or make ingested energy just *poof* disappear. So yeah it is all about calories!
Yes! You made me blurt out a laugh in public. You guys are amazing. Thanks for the back up. I quite literally just finished reading an article by brad schoenfeld who was bashing the insulin theory.
I intentionally spike my insulin while in a deficit post workout just in hopes it'll prevent any catabolism. Also bro science ish but I can admit that. Regardless of that I have broken sub 7% bf several times. So something isn't adding up..2 -

I can assure you, we're not afraid. We're aware of how unsustainable this is for the long term for most people. That guy could've said it without being rude though.
I wasn't being rude. I never said keto didn't work, what I said is the people spreading misinformation as to how it actually works need a reality check. If you find that rude I'm sorry I dnt know what to tell you. I guess I just find different things rude.3 -

I just want to say, you win that. Couldn’t have said it better. I’ve done Calorie counting at different numbers and it didn’t work for me. But I’m doing keto and every second day fasting, same calorie count and I’ve lost 40 pounds so whatever that means. Woo me all ya want but look at my progress pics. Exact same calories. Even on the fasting days? I love the condescension as you speak about how people have different opinions and that we should respect that.
Also.. there is still a very large following of people who do not believe it is round. One argument is if Antarctica isn't the end of the world why aren't civilians allowed to fly planes over it.
Soooo. And not 10 years ago the common sense belief was to lose fat you can't eat fat, then no carbs after 6pm followed by no eating at all after 9pm-12. So you know. Things change.5 -
I don't think skeptics are afraid of keto and IF. Skeptics are skeptical because its not the kinda diet that looks sustainable over the long term. How long can a person maintain a diet like this? For me it looks like a recipe for diarrhea and other digestion issues. Namely because extremely low cal diets are also extremely low in fiber. Also, where do you get energy from? How do you work out? So yeah I don't know anything about it, but from a birdseye view I wouldn't consider this to be a realistic life plan. And that's most people who have been at this for long are looking for, a sustainable diet plan. Unless you're a model cutting for photo shoot I don't get the point of keto and IF. You can easily drop pounds on a healthier balanced high fiber diet, because its hard eat enough calories in a day fiber is filling. CARBS are not satan.7

No, there is not "science" on both sides.
There are half truths on one side and actual research on the other.

Skeptics are skeptical of lies about why low carb diets work. Full stop.
If someone makes any claim other than they work because you create a calorie deficit and that the macro mix is one a particular individual finds satisfying and satiating? They're wrong.6 -

So, I am not an expert. I do not think that I am smarter than anyone else. Shoot....I *KNOW* that I am not the sharpest tool in the tool shed! :-)
But, I can - and will - say the following:
*I have higher A1C so I tried Keto - and loved it (maybe I will write a song about this).
*I did indeed combine Keto with IF.
*I absolutely love Carbs!
*I also absolutely love Fats!
*My training sessions SUCKED big time while doing Keto.
*I recently stopped doing Keto (see the above as to why).
So, if the OP is doing Keto and it is working then let's all celebrate! Hey, whatever works, right? And, since everyone knows that we are all different, we *should* all know that what works for me might not work for you.
Anyway, I am not 100% done with Keto. I truly did THOROUGHLY enjoy the Keto way. I am not done with it. Not yet. My contention is that we should be supportive of anyone and everyone who is having success. Just because that success looks different for him or for her does not mean that it is wrong.
I will say it - there are a lot of ignorant people out there who try this and that without any reason other than "Brad Pitt does this....and look at him". Or, they read the rags in the Grocery Store as they check out and see all of the Head Lines - loose weight with the <insert diet name here> Diets, fast and easy. Total and complete sheep and super ignorant! And, folks - not being ugly with that. Just being honest.
My contention is that MyFitnessPal forums can educate and reduce that level of ignorance and stop some of the 'blind sheep following' that we humans are seemingly so good at doing. And do that in a non-judgemental way. Sure, we all judge. All the time. But let's help each other.....not cut each other down (very general comment).
Anyway, not sure if this adds any value. Keto is super awesome and very useful for people with certain issues. It becomes a life-style for them. See that? Life-style....not "diet". So, for some people it is really a very useful and necessary thing. But it is VERY restrictive (no carbs is harder than you think....) and can prevent challenges for folks and since adherence is important for anything to be successful it might not be the right choice for most people.
Anyway, let's support people and their victories! As long as they are not doing anything that is short-term good and long-term bad......3 -

But...my whole point. Was. That things change. Some people are afraid of change because it’s different than what they know and most people fear what they don’t know. It’s disgusting to see how many people bash others for making a decision based on something that works for them. It’s okay to be skeptical. I was with keto at first but I gave it a shot. Did lab work, tried it out with clients. Like I put in a lot of works and I’m still learning about it. So when someone tells me like no that doesn’t happen or you’re wrong...I’ll admit it triggers me but I also understand why people attack it, because I once was skeptical about it.
As for the flat earthers. Even tho I believe that the world is round. I still have a slight open piece of mind for a possibility that it isn’t. I’ve seen all the theories and stuff.
I just wish people weren’t so stubborn.10 -

@thecalidiva try the low Carber daily or Keto MFP groups. The discussions are more about support and info rather than a debate on why do Keto. Most Keto threads go this way. Lol0 -

I think (for any woe) if it's practitioners don't claim things that are untrue and stick to either opinions or facts actually supported by the balance of scientific evidence, nobody (or very few people) has an issue.
It's when they make claims not supported by science that they push as fact that people disagree. This goes for any woe, but is doubly true for whatever way of eating is the current most talked about one (which at the moment is keto). It's no different, really, than people who say metabolic damage is real getting challenged (even in the food and nutrition forum).0 -

Sorry that your enthusiasm for Keto was nearly extinguished. As someone said, most Keto conversations do go this way. I did Keto, loved it, my gym performance suffered, am now doing something different *BUT* absolutely loved the Keto way. There is a lot of "funny information" out there about Keto and a lot of incorrect notions. Anyway, there is a Low Carb group (I am a part of it) and a few other more Keto-friendly (not sure that is the way to put it....so please give some latitude on that phrase) places.
I have still not decided if I am going to follow a modified Keto and do something different. But, not the point here. If Keto works for you and you are interested, lots and lots of good information out there. Problem is, it is really hard to find (because of the shear volume of info). I will provide a link to the low carb group....brb!0 -

Generally speaking, weight loss is Calories in Calories out. You find your maintenance caloric intake and you either reduce or increase (depending on your goals).
Generally speaking, if you want to cut (loose weight, loose body fat - there is actually a difference) you would decrease your caloric intake about 500 calories a day (or, 3,500 calories a week) to loose one pound. Or, increase your caloric intake about 500 calories a day (or, 3,500 calories a week) to gain one pound.
That is how things go - for most people.
Generally speaking, this is all that matters for weight gain | weight loss: Calories in Calories out. No matter the macros. It is all about calories. Very general comment.
Now, for some people there are additional things to consider. Again, very general comment. We are learning a lot more about metabolic compensation and metabolic syndrome. I am not an expert so those with more knowledge and experience may disagree.
So, does Keto or Paleo provide some magic bullet that *MAKES* you loose weight? No. For most people. Maybe it strongly contributes for some. But, very likely the answer is eating in a caloric deficit.....and maybe those two lifestyles assisted HIM/HER. I would suggest this....we are all different and if something works for someone then cool! As long as it is sustainable for HIM/HER......
But, no - not likely any magic bullet there. Generally speaking.
For full transparency, I am playing with the Keto lifestyle as I have high A1C. So, there is a medial reason for this.
And, please please please let's not turn this into a "bash on this" or "bash on that" post. There are lots of options out there. Keto and Paleo do work for some. Let's celebrate their success!0 -

My friend swears that eating keto and Paleo helped him get rid of his double chin.
I tried explaining that a calorie deficit is what caused the double chin to disappear but he swears it was magical. Do you have any input on the double chin debacle?
Generally speaking, weight loss is Calories in Calories out. You find your maintenance caloric intake and you either reduce or increase (depending on your goals).
Generally speaking, if you want to cut (loose weight, loose body fat - there is actually a difference) you would decrease your caloric intake about 500 calories a day (or, 3,500 calories a week) to loose one pound. Or, increase your caloric intake about 500 calories a day (or, 3,500 calories a week) to gain one pound.
That is how things go - for most people.

A couple of questions regarding the bolded. Based on your user name, I'm assuming you are working out with intensity multiple times per week? What is your weight status compared to goal? Overweight? At goal?
I ask because I was prediabetic at one point. The counsel of my D.O. (Osteopathic Doctor), was weight loss and intense exercise. He suggested lower carbs some but not to keto levels. Worked like a charm! 6 month and 14 lbs later, ideal BG and A1c numbers. Have kept the weight off and stayed on the exercise path.
I never and still don't eat keto but I tend to naturally eat lower carb. Eg. around 100 to 150 grams per day. Sometimes more, rarely less. It just my preference but I recall seeing some research that was indicative of lower carbs can help BG and A1c. Didn't need to be to keto levels though. Also, higher fiber.
So, I am curious about the details of your situation if you are comfortable sharing them.0
