I totally second this.
I could easily eat 600 cals of oatmeal and not be full, which is unfortunate because it’s so convenient and I do like the taste. Eggs and veggies on the other hand I would be full for hours.
Personal preference I guess!
Me, too. I absolutely love oats, but as an afternoon treat. And not often. They wreck me if I eat them in the morning. I do much better with something high fat with a little protein for my first meal of the day.2 -
I cook mine with water, then add milk for volume. I vary with vanilla, Splenda, brown sugar, banana, nuts, cinnamon, pumpkin spice, chia seeds, a tablespoon or two of heavy cream if I'm not using milk.1

I have never put butter on my oatmeal so that seems rather odd to me. Is this a southern style like the way they do it with grits?
In any even, I just put quick oats in low fat yogurt and that's it for me. If I want to do something different I cook it with cinnamon and a bit of apple and raisins. Oatmeal is pretty bland so you can do pretty much anything, but you have to watch since you can end up with a ton of calories from the extras.0 -
Have you tried butter sprays? I can't believe it's not butter is one that has 0 calories but I'm not sure about fat and other bad stuff.
This myth that the spray is 0 calories gets a lot of people in trouble. That's a labeling trick but it has just as many calories as the regular margarine. I would always log it as 10 calories because it's something like 6-8 but under the labelling laws they are allowed to say it's 0. Unfortunately, your body isn't a legal representative and when you put on 4 or 5 sprays you've added almost 40-50 calories without even knowing it.0 -
First thing into the water is a big spoon of unflavored gelatin. It augments the protein in my steel-cut oats and improves mouth-feel. I also add a pinch of msg with the salt. And in my only concession to sweetener, I add Splenda to cut the bitterness. Nothing else on, in, or with it, except for a cup of coffee.0

Oats are my absolute favourite breakfast - I eat them before I head to the gym. They keep me full for a few hours and provide me with tons of energy!
1/3 cup dry steel cut oats (quaker quick cooking kind)
1 cup of water
1.tbsp natural peanut butter ( mix into the oats while cooking)...once cooked I top with:
1/2 cup unsweetened cashew milk
Lots of cinnamon
Liquid stevia to sweeten
All for around 300 cals. So good.
I have the exact same breakfast everyday before heading to the gym.2 -
Overnight oats. I'm relatively new to the concept but I've found it saves me a boatload of time in the morning.
I shoot for 600 calories per jar, and eat half before my workout at 5 a.m.; the other half at 9 a.m. keeps me satiated until lunch.1 -
I love oatmeal! I usually use a 40g serving of old fashioned. Today I put in vanilla, a little sugar, cinnamon, salt, beat an egg and added it, then a little unsweetened vanilla almond milk and tossed it in the microwave!
Other mornings I’ll add a whole banana, cinnamon, salt. And either the unsweetened almond milk or water. (I like it to have a bit of bite, so I don’t use a lot of liquid and a little less time)
I’ve gone savory with it putting in salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, water, and cheese. Sometimes a bit of pasta sauce.
It’s really versatile!0 -
I have 1 cup cooked oats. I cook it in water in my rice cooker. 150 calories. I add 8-10 g of sesame seeds for crunch, cinammon, 1/4 tsp maple syrup and about 1/4 of a pomegranate seeds. Comes to about 300 calories. Sometimes I'll use blueberries instead or if I have neither than a few raisins. For a light breakfast I'll add a fried egg on the side. For a heavier breakfast, two eggs and 2 slices of bacon, total around 650 calories. I've found the heavier breakfast will keep me full for about 6 hours including a 40 minute walk.0

So does the egg replace some of the water or milk you would normally use? I like my oats pretty dry too, like the consistency of spackle and I've heard of people cooking oats with an egg but wasn't sure if you still need to add a liquid.1 -
A small bit of butter in my oatmeal doesn’t really add that many calories. Half a tbsp is 50 calories. If I’m having sweet oatmeal I cook it in milk with a little butter and then add brown sugar to it. If I’m having it not sweet I cook it in water with butter. Salt pepper, eggs and stuff.0

Here is what I do and everyone in the family, even the dedicated oatmeal haters love it.
In a slow cooker, set on low, before I go to bed:
6 cups water
2 cups steel cut oats.
2 apples, peeled and cored, diced into 1/2” size pieces
1/2 cup dried cranberries
Cinnamon to taste
1 table spoon vanilla
Just dump everything into cooker, stir it up a bit and go to bed.
You’ll awake to amazing aromas and wholesome goodness. Keeps in airtight container in frig for up to a week.
Tip..I used to buy that Irish oats in a can. Good stuff but spendy. Steel cut is steel cut so I buy mine in bulk, keeps a long time.
When I'm having hotel breakfasts, I often grab an instant oatmeal packet. If sugar is a concern, they make them plain with nothing added. That's what I usually have because I like to add other ingredients to make savory oats.3 -
My general oatmeal dish is a quantity of 1 cup uncooked whole oatmeal (300 cal), 2 tbls peanut butter (180 cal), 1 banana (100 cal), and 1/4 cup 2% milk (40 cal).
Approx. 620 cals.

I usually buy the packets of plain instant oats. Generic kind is 100 calories per packet. I cook it and then throw in 4 or 5 scrambled egg whites (plain). Flavor it however you like, it's very versatile. Sometimes I add a sweetener and some almonds, cinnamon, etc. Other times I make it with pepper, hot sauce, spinach, etc. One way or the other it tastes like either a sweet breakfast of oats or a hearty breakfast of eggs. The egg whites pick up the flavor of whatever you mix in and gives you a great balance of carbs/protein in the morning. Nuts for some fats... without the nuts and depending on the sweetener you use you're looking at around 168-200 calories.1

And you can find instant oatmeal packets - plain - with little to no sugar at all.1

Wait people put butter on oatmeal!?! My mind is blown. I've never thought of doing that. I like 1 T. vanilla extract, 1/2 c. thin diced apples and 1 T. cinnamon. Add in some protein powder if desired.1

Add some salsa and turkey sausage with some cut up cherry tomatoes, green onion and peppers. Good to you and good for you!!!!1

I do Bob's red mill rolled oats. I cut out honey because I found that 1/2 cup of frozen or fresh fruit was good enough.0

LOLI think everyone misunderstood .. you are looking for things to add to your oatmeal that will not make it as many calories as butter. LOL Not what to replace butter with LOL2

I used to do oats with an egg a lot, and I wouldn't also add a liquid. (Ah, but mine were savory oats, so maybe never mind.)2 -
Daily half cup old fashioned oats in the micro top with a dash of cinnamon, handful of berries tsp of honey and 1/4 milk. The protein in the milk keeps the growls away, the carbs give me energy, the honey is full of good stuff and cinnamon warms you up. All told under 250 cal.1

I like the taste of oatmeal but not the texture (I generally don't like "gloppy" foods, puddings and custards included). So I buy oat flour (or grind my own), and make pancakes/tortillas/muffins/etc. I flavor them up with spices of various sorts. Fruit on the side.1

I've both heated it separately (with the veg I was sauteeing to add to my savory oats) and included it in the rice cooker where I make my oats. Both worked fine. I read about it here and was skeptical about texture if I was to cook it with the oats, but was surprised it worked out.0 -
If you eat oatmeal...you're better off eating a candy bar, or chocolate ....oatmeal raises your insulin and does not keep you full for a long time.14

That's personal preference. Oatmeal keeps me full for hours. Eggs and bacon would only work with some home fries to fill me up.
Also oatmeal has fiber and has plenty of health benefits, it's not anything like a candy bar :huh:10
