God help me - Dr. Oz and the ACV “ detox overload” diet plan

I’m home from work today and saw that Dr. Oz had a segment on ACV and weigh loss today. I don’t normally watch him, as I work during the day, but had to watch since I’ve never understood why so many people come on MFP asking about ACV.
Some “expert” is talking right now about how her ACV plan will help with “toxic overload” issues...you know you have it when you have bloating and weight gain.
No mention of what toxins are overloading our systems...no mention of any science about how ACV eliminates these toxins. And not one question from Dr. Oz asking about the science or peer reviewed studies that back any of this up.
Jesus, now I understand how all these posters come in asking about ACV and weight loss. How is this man allowed to promote this kind of crap and lend the credibility of his medical degree to that?
Rant over - for now - LOL

Why do you care?39

Because it’s a load of crap...and distracts/diverts people from focusing on the real science behind weight loss: CICO. And I guess I’m idealistic enough to believe a medical doctor should held to a higher standard of scientific review.40

Ugh... my aunt is trying to follow a diet along with me, but I'm doing better than her at sticking with it and she's not counting calories like I am. Today, she mentioned ACV and how I should try it because it's so good for you, etc. I told her what people say about it here and she says she's still doing it. I don't understand. WHY DRINK VINEGAR? WHY?9

Well I didn't see the episode. But frankly I don't give a crap what other people do. If they feel better drinking it, let them. I highly doubt he was advocating not eating and just drink acv. So who cares? It's not like it's going to hurt them either.
My husband drinks it. He likes it. He doesn't need to lose weight and he's not on this site. He just thinks it's healthy. It's not hurting him. And it doesn't matter.
Honestly, people here get so worked up over things that really are unnecessary.56 -

I have yet to see a "detoxer" who can credibly cite which toxins are removed, and by what physiological mechanism it occurs. It's always just "OMGZZZZZ TEH TOXINZZZZZ!!!11!!!1!!".15 -

You say you don’t give a crap about what other people do. But I give a (nice) crap about the countless people that come on this forum searching for a special pill or diet or substance (like ACV) that will help them lose weight. When they pin their hopes on something like ACV, and it doesn’t work, they often walk away feeling hopeless and they give up. No one deserves to feel like that, especially when the answer is right there with CICO.
There is a big difference between saying - drink it - might be “healthy” somehow, but it probably won’t hurt you - and promoting it as a weight loss solution for commercial purposes. And that’s what I just saw on tv.

He might be losing tooth enamel, via drinking the ACV; which's unhealthy & some people've had to get liver transplants by developing jaundice, due to diet pills! So yeah, it might be deadly even; to promote some scams but people're also'ving their money stolen; by these bogus claims!8 -
The body's own detox system
https://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/the-dubious-practice-of-detox
We tend to forget that the body is equipped with a detoxification system of its own, which includes the following:
The skin. The main function of the body's largest organ is to provide a barrier against harmful substances, from bacteria and viruses to heavy metals and chemical toxins. The skin is a one-way defense system; toxins are not eliminated in perspiration.
The respiratory system. Fine hairs inside the nose trap dirt and other large particles that may be inhaled. Smaller particles that make it to the lungs are expelled from the airways in mucus.
The immune system. This exquisitely orchestrated network of cells and molecules is designed to recognize foreign substances and eliminate them from the body. Components of the immune system are at work in blood plasma, in lymph, and even in the small spaces between cells.
The intestines. Peyer's patches — lymph nodes in the small intestine — screen out parasites and other foreign substances before nutrients are absorbed into the blood from the colon.
The liver. Acting as the body's principal filter, the liver produces a family of proteins called metallothioneins, which are also found in the kidneys. Metallothioneins not only metabolize dietary nutrients like copper and zinc but also neutralize harmful metals like lead, cadmium, and mercury to prepare for their elimination from the body. Liver cells also produce groups of enzymes that regulate the metabolism of drugs and are an important part of the body's defense against harmful chemicals and other toxins.
The kidneys. The fact that urine tests are used to screen for drugs and toxins is a testament to the kidneys' remarkable efficiency in filtering out waste substances and moving them out of the body.
The bottom line
The human body can defend itself very well against most environmental insults and the effects of occasional indulgence (see "The body's own detox system"). If you're generally healthy, concentrate on giving your body what it needs to maintain its robust self-cleaning system — a healthful diet, adequate fluid intake, regular exercise, sufficient sleep, and all recommended medical check-ups. If you experience fatigue, pallor, unexplained weight gain or loss, changes in bowel function, or breathing difficulties that persist for days or weeks, visit your doctor instead of a detox spa.20 -
People at work frequently talk about how they're drinking acv. I just nod and smile. It's their bodies, their choice. If they ask for an opinion, I tell them that I only use it as a cleanse for my hair. If they ask how I'm losing weight, I keep it simple: I'm counting calories and eating in moderation.5

And people wonder why oprah has struggled with her weight all her life. We know why. She listens to quacks like this idiot.
Dont be oprah (unless you are making a billion dollars then be oprah).26 -
I gave up trying to tell people how to lose weight. People ask me how I lost 50 pounds and I tell them it's all about eating better/less. People rarely believe me, it's always "you must have ran miles every day", or "did x fad diet", or the best one "you must be naturally skinny and/or have good genes".
Many friends bring up carbs, sodium, sugar, etc when they mean nothing for weight loss. Don't tell them that though, because they'll claim your wrong even though you're the one who lost 50 pounds when they are still obese.
Lots of people seem to blame their genetics for their weight and claim it is impossible for them to be skinny. These type of people have no motivation to fix themselves and make excuses, best save effort for people who are willing to put in the effort via legitimate CICO methods.9 -

Cognitive dissonance I suppose. A friend of mine was going to spend a month eating 500cal a day because she wanted to drop weight for a VIP meet and greet with her favourite singer. Even after explaining how bad it was going to be for her, her reply was the same "I'm doing it anyway". Thankfully she didn't last more than a few days and gave up the idea, but still.4 -

The power of hunger is a strong argument against whatever plans someone might have. No matter how stubborn they try to be!7 -
Lol. Ok, you people sit and here and get all worked up about it then. Have fun. I'm going to relax with some wine and roast chicken. Have a nice night.
P.s. Stress ain't good for your health either.
Projecting much? Why are you assuming people are upset, stressed, or worked up? Is it because you are??
It's just a discussion.

Guarantee you no one is losing weight purely by including activated charcoal or ACV in their diet. Neither has the mechanism to do so.21 -

Heartburn or watching Dr. Oz?8 -

Says the woman who thinks CICO is "overrated" and recommends frequent colonics.31 -
I saw the episode and I didn't see where they ever gave the reason ACV causes weight loss. They gave recipes which were lower calorie that included ACV, but all she said was it would "eliminate toxins". If your liver and kidneys are functioning then you shouldn't have to worry about "toxins". I still don't see the evidence supporting ACV as a weight loss panacea. Will it hurt you, probably not unless its causing heartburn.1

The people who have lost weight were consuming less calories than they burned. ACV has nothing to do with it.GlorianasTears wrote: »No offense but some people do lose weight doing things like that. Be humble and dont think that you know everything different strokes for different folks
