I prefer smaller non-franchise coffee shops myself. And Starbucks for some reason seems to like to burn their beans when they roast them. I will drink an iced Cold Brew, those are usually pretty good and smooth. The only time I treat myself is over Christmas, and I will get a Venti SKPM (Skinny Peppermint Mocha - made using sugar-free syrups) with only half the pumps of syrup.

I agree that the brewed coffee they sell in the stores tastes burned, but I don't think it's the roasting, as I can brew perfectly good coffee at home using Starbucks beans. It has to be either their brewing process or, hard as it is to believe, their coffee sits over heat for too long after brewing. I don't buy the regular brewed coffee at Starbucks. I get espresso-based drinks (which aren't "brewed" until you order them) like Americanos or lattes, or cold brew (or tea or steamed milk or hot chocolate...)
