In my past, I too, have been guilty of wondering why someone draws the line at the beverage when eating so much. Now I wish I had drawn the line a few more places giving me less to burn back off.
Back when I was heavy and before I was concerned about losing weight, I still had type 1 diabetes and still had to manage BG. Diet soda eliminate that issue with soda anyway.
As to the taste of Diet Coke... interesting facts about that. A very long time ago, during the "cola wars," Coca-Cola's own marketing research found that consumers prefer the flavor of Pepsi most, the flavor of Diet Coke next, and the flavor of Coke least (amongst those 3 options). Of course, Coca-Cola did not own the Pepsi flavor, but they owned the flavor of Diet Coke. So they tried to gain some market share by making a caloric beverage with the same flavor as Diet Coke. The logic was that consumers preferred the taste of Diet Coke and if it also had sugar and HFCS, then it would sell better than Coke. In April 1985, they launched this new product with the flavor of Diet Coke in a form with sugar... they called it "New Coke." Coca-Cola forgot about the nostalgia factor and ended up bringing back the original Coke flavor only a few months later because of a very vocal group of consumers who resisted the change.
I definitely prefer the taste of diet coke over any other soda, and I can emphatically state that New Coke was disgusting! If it was supposed to taste like diet coke, somebody's taste buds were on vacation when they were testing it. Thanks for the history lesson, I never knew what was behind that giant marketing fail

That was what their marketing research found. Of course, there are going to be some consumers that prefer the taste of Coke Classic. Based on the research done at that time, those consumers are a minority.1 -
I mostly drink coke zero but really dislike diet coke. So manybpeople say they taste the same but nope not to me they don't.3

Where I used to work I had a manager that criticised everything I ate, bearing in mind she was an unhealthy weight and I am a size 8 (UK size). One day I got out my lunch box and took out my 15g of peanut butter... she looked at me and said 'You know you shouldn't eat peanut butter, its extremely fattening'. I was so shocked there were no words to respond haha.1

Diet advice is like fashion advice and hair advice, should only be listened to if being provided by i) someone whose opinion you have sought and ii) looks like they follow their own advice NB I love peanut butter - wish I was able to stop at 15g!!1 -
Where is @Aaron_K123 ? I have just uncovered evidence that alternate sweeteners are bad! People who use them don't like Mexican Coke!! I am going to Starbucks to spread the word.

If you're buying a $5 coffee you should be able to put anything you want it in.4

"You shouldn't use that stuff, you know. It's worse than sugar." "You really need to stop using that, it's nothing but chemicals. It's really a terrible thing to do to your body..."
*Stares* *blink blink*
"Oh, interesting. Can I see your badge?"
"My badge?"
"Your Food Police badge. Surely you got one when you graduated from Fake News University right? Did you major or minor in false nutrition facts?"
*walks away*

"If there's anyone who knows about artificial sweeteners its me. I know all of the artificial sweeteners. They love me, I use them for everything. We're going to make Starbucks great again."
