Less Alcohol- June 2018- One Day at a Time

So my husband and I spent 4 days camping at a motorcycle rally. There was much much drinking and a lot of snacking. Coming home and starting clean today was actually a relief. I found myself looking forward to not drinking today. This gives me some piece of mind. My father was an alcoholic and I have wondered many times over the years if I had a problem. There have definitely been times I was drinking too much. In any case, after being AF April and May I gave myself the rally to just let go. I struggled with that decision. I worried that I would feel all the day 1 anxiety I felt before. So it makes me feel better that I can say yes when I want to and no when I want to.
I know that feeling. After a little break not drinking feels like the best thing!4 -
@lorrainequiche59, you continue to be my doppelgänger. Day 18! Me too. Friday is my 25th anniversary at a posh hotel. I’m thinking AF won’t be happening. But 18 days is kind of money in the bank along this journey. Saturday starts another streak. 18 days is more than I’ve been AF in years. Literally. Progress.
That is a great streak. Nothing wrong with a break. But you wanting to start another streak is what matters most!2 -
Had my neighbours ( in their 80’s) round last night for some drinks. Previously this has involved alot of wine, as they can drink dor their country !
Instead, I stuck to sparkling water and found myself in the funny situation of being literally bullied by an 81 yr old woman about why I wasnt having a “proper drink”.She wouldn’t let up!
After about 3 hours of her drinking red wine, she hit a slump and much to my entertainment was forced to drink water. I was AF all night and have no hang over today, unlike my neighbour I imagine8 -
after our weekly sunday grocery shopping, my husband went to the liquor store and wanted a few beer for a. father's day and b. while we fixed the deck. he asked if i wanted anything. i admit my resolve kind of fell . i bought a bottle of Aperol *an italian aperitif that is mixed with soda water and prosecco to make a spritz* and a small bottle of prosecco. i had two drinks only, and had soda water for the rest of the day. we had a great dinner, the sun was shining, and i felt good about being moderate and not drinking for the rest of the weekend.
i hope all you Dads out there enjoyed your father's day! and that everyone had a wonderful weekend3 -
Day 12 AF, have survived the usual triggers of airports, travel, sunshine, BBQs. Have got my parents staying for a week and it is great being able to take them out, without having to watch my limit or be grumpy because I can’t drink as much if I am driving. Have been out buying wine and beer for them, with no urge at all to drink any. Happy with my sparkling water and a slice of lime. Taking them to a great Tapas bar tonight in the old town, which has an awesome wine menu. I’m looking forwards to it , as the food is amazing and I know my head is going to be clear tomorrow
TAPAS! you're in Spain??? : )2 -

Hi, Everyone! Just checking in to the current thread. Haven't posted in quite a while, but I'm still here reading and enjoying being a part of this group!
I'm 165 days AF (would never have thought that was possible!), and I don't ever envision drinking again at this point. Moderation, for me, is a slippery slope and is more effort than just not drinking at all. So I just don't drink anymore.
@JulieAL1969 had posted a link to an article a while back where (I think) Keith Urban reflected that his world had become smaller and smaller due to alcohol. That statement really resonated with me. I've made an effort since quitting alcohol to open my world up. A girl-trip with my daughter (our first!), renewed focus on my fitness goals (I'm registered for my first marathon in the fall!), doing well at work, a stronger relationship with my husband, etc.
I wish everyone the best of luck in meeting their goals, whatever those may be10 -
For those of you that track your sleep, it took awhile for my sleep patterns to even out after quitting alcohol, but eventually it did! Here's what the last 12 months look like for me. I found it to be pretty eye-opening! I quit alcohol the first week of January 2018 and it took about 2 months for me to really start sleeping better. I definitely still have some ups & downs, but it seems like overall I get more sleep and not so many spikes.
What has been everyone's experience with their sleep patterns?

@como_agua, I fell in love with spritzes during my trip to Italy in March. Unfortunately, for me they go down like Kool-Aid, so I can't indulge in them. Good for you for enjoying them mindfully. Sounds like a nice evening.3

@kcn2bluesky I did sleep much better after being one month AF. I do know that when I do drink 2-3 drinks that night's sleep is just awful! Happy you have such a long, wonderful streak. I applaud you! Xoxo1

@jecky74 This is a new week. Get back to your health goals, and never regret having fun! Life is an adventure! And self awareness is key. Now, you're ready to get back on track. Xo2

Hi Friends, I'm heading to Florida for five days. I'm going with a friend who has always been a moderate drinker. She can sip that one glass of wine for an hour while I salivate and debate whether to just order myself another! Do you ever do that? You are sitting with a moderate drinker and realize just how fast you drink. And how you try to emulate and just sip your beverage like her.
I'm also going with my teenage daughter and friend who don't drink. So, I will try to stay mindful and have only one or two drinks by the pool. I'll also monitor that if I dont feel well after those two drinks, I wont bother drinking the rest of the weekend. I want to feel good every morning when I wake up and we go on long bike rides and power walks on the beach.7 -
Need to get off of this roller coaster... was doing "okay" with moderation... but then IDK what triggered me on Sunday, started off sneaking VD into my spark water, early, 3pm. Had a few friends coming over for dinner at 4pm, by then on my 2nd drink. Shared another drink with my friend (she only had the one)... I continued on, 1 more. All of this on a nearly empty stomach. Had some dinner, (luckily I was well prepared ahead of time), but then by 8pm, I was just so tired, said goodnight to everyone... what a party pooper I was, so embarrassed!
This is not the 1st time I have done this, it has just been a while. Need to get control back! I did not drink yesterday, feel so much better today.
By not drinking, I know that this will get my healthy eating habits back into action, want to lose some lbs too!
I have only caught up to the June 2nd posts... I have some catching up to do with all of you and your adventures!5 -
@NormInv Welcome back!3

Finally got my test results today, Negative. What a relief!
ErikNJ, any news? Not trying to pry, just thinking about you.10 -

You probably already know this but you might want to drink a fair amount of Gatorade (or take any other measure that hydrates and boosts electrolytes) before your pool plus alcohol outing. IME it can be hours before but it does help. You certainly do not want a few drinks to interfere with your nice time away.

@NovusDies I never thought of that- you're right. I'll do that. Thanks for the tips. You are the one who doesnt get hangovers anymore- is that your strategy? To prep before hand?1
-
@snoo61 I'm so happy for you! What a relief!1

@looneycatblue Hey, I've done that before. Adding a little VD to my sparkling water at home, and then the real party starts and by then I was already tipsy acting like I wasn't.
I know how you feel. But you are on day 2 today and just wait til day 5 and you will feel so much better and get back on track.
Sometimes, we have a trigger and before we know it, we pour one and then another. Wonder what the trigger was for you.
Sending you a big hug.1 -

Myself and @erikNJ . Prepping beforehand is one part, yes. Prepping for you under the Florida sun might prevent an even worse hangover for not much alcohol.
ETA: I wouldn't say I don't get hangovers at all. I just get very mild ones.0 -

Sending warm thoughts and good vibes, just know someone is thinking of you both.1 -
Thanks and love to all of you! I still have to figure out what's going on, but your support has helped me deal with this.4
