Race report! Finished my 10K trail race in 1:30:16 and didn't come last. End of race pic with my cousin my mouth was full - good job hubby...

Anyway, first 2km was a steep downhill on gravel road. We just flew through that part - Garmin tells me I will got new 1K and 1 mile PRs. Then cut off the road and on to the Galena trail, which is an old railroad line from the Silver Rush at the turn of the 20th century. At this point it was mostly rooty double track and mostly gentle downhill. Some rocky sections.

We ran along Carpenter Creek for a bit and eventually crossed it via cable car.

After crossing the creek the terrain changed a bit - a lot rockier and a lot steeper, and some challenging uphill bits where the trail detoured around a washout.

Then we cut away from the Galena Trail and on to the Carpenter Creek trail which had some of the toughest and most technical sections - extremely rugged downhill (dry & dusty). But we were soon out of that and into meadows and a bit of a rocky floodplain as the valley leveled out.

The leader from the ultramarathon blazed past us a few minutes later and about 5 minutes after that I promptly fell on my face, though my elbow got the worst of it.

But we were only a mile from the finish line so my cousin squirted my elbow with the dregs of my water bottle and then we carried on and managed to run it in to the finish. I got 1:30:16 and she had 1:30:15. They gave me my edible medal and off we went to get first aid on my elbow!

Awesome race, 10/10 would recommend to anyone who is in the area. I think the ultra (45K) is pretty good too. The finish is the same and I've hiked part of the peak before.

Really good run today! I made goal, plus I made my secondary goal of slowly working back up to 10K during July without injuring my knee again.

10k on trails through the woods, mostly roots, a little mud. Our pace was a trails PR for me! 10:21 mile pace, usually on trails 12 is fast for me and more often it's 13 - 14. We actually ran one sub 10 minute mile on account of running a fast finish for the first 5k. I don't think I've ever run faster than 11 in the woods before.

We got out late, a little before noon, and it was hot, and I lifted weights yesterday, so I figured the run would be a suffer fest, but once I got out there I felt great. My husband said to me, "You're really booking," and I said, "yeah it feels good though, are you okay?" And he said, "I'm okay if you're okay, not sure we can keep this up for six miles though." But we did! Negative splits most of the way and a fast finish. First 10k run since my knee injury, and the knee feels fine. I was even dancing around when I got home, I had so much energy.

@MegaMooseEsq and @Avidkeo - I had to chuckle because I am also a redhead covered in freckles so I turn a magnificent shade of red when I'm working out. Sometimes I shock myself when I look in the mirror!

@PastorVincent - well at least the packages showed up at YOUR door and not a neighbor. Two years ago I bought my husband a 6-pack of Chicago Cubs games for Christmas. They were delivered to the neighbor who opened them and then couldn't figure out what to do with them until they finally realized my name was on the package. So they walked over and handed them to my husband and said "I think these are yours" - so much for that surprise. The good news is that's the year they won the World Series so the following Christmas I had the tickets framed.

I spent way too many hours trying to figure out how to afford that Key West half in January. I can fly from Chicago to Ft. Lauderdale for only $180 - but my oh my the lodging is ridiculously expensive and no matter what I try I can't bring the cost below $1400 (for 5 nights). So then I thought "skip it I'll sign up for the Zion half in February" only to find out it's already sold out. Grrr...... so frustrating!

Today's notes – Today was Day 2 of the Battle at Bristol Mountain. I participated in the 10K, because I'm stupid. I didn't participate in the half marathon, the 50K, or the 24 hour relay because I'm not suicidal. Gun time for the 10K was 11 AM. Temperature was 73º F (16º C), but we didn't get the showers that were forecast. We did get some clouds roll in for an overcast sky after about 3 miles; that was quite welcome.

I thought to take a picture of an early part of the course before the race. The gravel path looks runnable, but I was warned that it just keeps going up for about 3K:

I started out running, and when it got steep slowed to a hike. Kept a pattern of mostly hiking, then running 50 to 100 paces when I found a stretch that was less steep. Got to the top, and could run for a ways. Missed the 10K turn off the main loop (used for the 50K and relay) until a runner behind me yelled; told him he saved my life. Then we were running down a ski slope.

I'm not all that good a trail runner, and a couple of real trail runners passed me on that downslope.

Got to the bottom, turned, and now we're going up a ski slope. No running here, hike until I get to the short grass. Then down, and I'm thinking I've done the hard part. I was told it went up the mountain and down twice.

I was told wrong. We went up the mountain three times. The last time must have been an expert ski slope; it was a case of hike 54 paces, rest a few seconds on the level ledge, hike 56 paces to the next level ledge, repeat for what felt like forever. About a third of the way up that one, I wanted to take pictures; but I had left my phone in the car. Sigh.

The third time up was about 4.5 miles in. Got about a mile of actual running on double track trails and grassy roads. Then . . . what goes up, must come down. Down the mountain on 3 sections of ski slope with 2 blessed almost level transitions between them. By now my quads and calves are hurting. I walk most of the way down, striving to find a pace that doesn't hurt and doesn't feel like I'm about to fall down.

After I finished, I got my phone from the car and took a picture of other runners coming down the final ski slope. Okay, most of them look like dots in the picture:

This was a rare 10K with a finisher's medal; but seeing as how it was tougher than a typical road half marathon, I'm not ashamed to accept a 10K finisher's medal that's about as nice as the typical half marathon finisher's medal:

Garmin says 6.57 miles. Looked at the course map later, and it said 6.52 miles. Okay, 10K-ish distance. My gun time was 1:28:33, which was 11th of 71 overall and 1st of 2 in the M 60-99 age group. So one other guy over 60 was just as dumb as I am.

Stuff I did right: Got to bed before 9 last night. Slept till 6:30 this morning. Made no attempt to go pace 8 miles for the training group a 7 before running this race at 11. Recognized that I was not adequately trained for the terrain, and walked before I had to walk. Ran/hiked/walked with the goal survival. Didn't fall down.

Stuff I did wrong: Registered for this race with the idea of competing in the USATF Niagara Runner of the Year series, in which it represents mountain running. I have no chance to repeat as USATF Niagara Masters Runner of the Year; the favorite is my team-mate Mike, who ran today's course in 1:03:31 for 4th overall and first Master.

Lessons learned: When the Battle at Bristol Mountain series was announced as a new event a few years ago, my immediate reaction was, "I don't have enough testosterone for that one." My immediate reaction was correct. I should not attempt to repeat this.

The web site says there are medals for age group winners in the USATF competition. I didn't hang around for an awards ceremony; apparently the time cutoff for the 10K was 6 hours. If the age group medal is typical of USATF regional events, it will be a cheap generic thing that I can live without, good only for post-race winner photos.

It was quite an experience out there on the ski slopes. If my legs let me run tomorrow, I'll count today's race as a success.

Thanks everyone! I cleaned the elbow a bit better when I got back to my uncle's house. Polysporin and lots of it! I need to clean it again as there's still some dirt in there but honestly I don't think it's as bad as it looked initially. Just badly scraped and lots of bruises all down my right side. A doctor looked at it at the ferry ramp and suggested just cleaning it again and doing as I've already started.

TBH I'm more bummed that one of my water bottles must have popped out of my fuel belt when I fell!

@MobyCarp I am not a fan of running up and down ski slopes. Did that at my last trail race and ugh. Sounds brutal! But congrats on finishing it fast!

So went and found a pretty place to run today. I apparently missed a turn on the first Trail I tried to follow, and ended up back at the main road after 1.5 miles, instead of 4. So then went and took the trail off another direction. I was actually running more of things than I thought I could, and was doing so not a whole lot slower than some of my road runs have been lately, which proves to me that a lot of my pace and endurance issues I’ve been having lately are in my head/mental.

Then came the excitement... I don’t know if A bug went in my mouth or if something else went wrong, but a bit after 2 miles I started all but dry heaving, and I certainly wasn’t worn down enough for it to be exertion related only. But, looking at the trail in front of me, I decided discretion was the better part of valor, and turned around. Seem to be fine now. Eh, who knows... but anyways...

Went to the Great Wall. Was probably a bad idea. Sweated buckets and was drinking everything in sight by the end of it. Watch died on me so 10k is a rough estimate.

He left me in the dust when he finally spotted some kids.

16 km run (10 miles) today, bringing me up to 184 km (114 miles) for the month.

I started out doing 7 km slow. Garmin still said my performance was up 1, which was nice of it.

Then a barking, growling dog chased me, scaring the crap out of me!

I kept running without gesturing or reacting, and it stopped after a short block.

The rest of the run was a lot faster, felt great, fueled on adrenaline, and my time was 1:40:44.
