Life happened this week so today was the first day since Saturday I got to run. Been a long busy week and no rest for at least one more week.
Thought I was at 30 miles before post and adding in today’s total was thinking I had 16 to go to get to 50. A little over that which leaves a little wiggle room. We are doing a mini vacation tomorrow and I have a work event Saturday so not sure how much running I will do. Going to try to get 4 miles on 4 days before end of month. That will put me a little over goal.
Today’s run was pleasant temperature wise although I did not record it at start time. Garmin app says it was 72° F. Felt slow probably cause of a 4 day rest.
I did register for the Quarter Marathon at the Louisiana Marathon weekend this week. My husband told me probably not a good idea to run two 5K in one day - and not good for our budget. St. Jude has new courses this year, so kinda regret not signing up for the half but okay with the 10K course.

Nominal July mileage goal: 100 miles
Real goals: Get healthy. Build base. Work toward being able to run Wineglass in September.
Today's notes – Still felt a little beat up from Tuesday's hard speed work, and the assignment for today looked a bit challenging: 2 miles easy, 2-4 x 1600m at T pace w/1 minute recovery, 8 x 200m at I pace w/200m recovery, 3 miles easy. I figured 3 x 1600 is where I would be if I weren't beat up, and that adds up to about 10 miles. So I went out for a warmup, and just kept running for 10 miles.
Did this from where the club practices, because I could put more of the 10 miles on easy trails and in the shade than I could if I ran from home. Rough estimate, after the run: 1 mile road/asphalt sidewalk; 3.5 miles non-technical mostly dirt trails; 5.5 miles Erie Canal path, some asphalt and some stone dust.
Got back to base, and saw a lump in the grass. Looks like a person. She's not moving. What? Then Olga got up out of a deep pigeon pose and I laughed. Told her for a minute there, I thought I was a jogger. Then I had to explain that to her, and she laughed.
Other thought of the day: You know you're a marathon runner when a kid who runs 1500m races asks if you're going for a long run today and without thinking you say, "Not really, only 10 miles."

No run today. I started my week long on- call rotation today and received a call late afternoon; I didn’t run while waiting for the follow up medical clearance call. It is almost 10pm and that call still hasn’t come...
On the bright side, my new shoes arrived today! They are the Mizuno Wave Rider 21s. My last two pair have been the 20s, so I’m hoping I like these as much.

Hey all. Went for a foggy 5k run this morning then ate WAY too much at lunch. and takeaways for dinner. I feel very sluggish and its only 4pm. oh well, 10k run tomorrow and I'm looking forward to it. burn off some of todays calories...6

@rheddmobile Yes, buy a bike! Let's be absolute tri beginners together!
I have the bike, but I suck suck suck at swimming. I took a class to learn crawl stroke a few years ago, epic fail. This week a colleague told me about a sprint triathlon in September, and somehow I started wondering if it wouldn't be cool to train for that instead of for a half marathon. So yesterday afternoon I went swimming for the first time in ages. I'm still close to drowning when I try a crawl... In the end I thought maybe I could do breast stroke instead. I tried, and managed ~150m in 5min. And then I looked up the results from last year and saw that people do the entire 400m in 5 minutes I don't mind finishing last (well, I guess I do, but would be sorta okay with it), but starting the bike ride more than 10 minutes later than anybody else doesn't sounds like fun. I think my tri debut will have to wait a little longer, I need to get the swimming sorted out first. I wouldn't mind a virtual training buddy
@PastorVincent Ha ha. Just wait for halloween, when the trick-or-treaters will haunt all your entrances, that will be even more fun than the amazon shipments
@zdyb23456 Congratulations on the distance PR!!
@MobyCarp LOL, I know what "a jogger" refers to in this situation. Glad it wasn't a dead body you stumbled across
@marisap2010 Great new shoes!
And don't you hate when work gets in the way of running...
I've got a single night shift (Friday 0h-8h) right now, after working regular hours on Thursday. There's a meeting at 11 on Friday I should still attend. When am I supposed to run? I have the entire afternoon off on Friday, but it will be above 30°C again. And late Friday night isn't really an option, it doesn't really cool down before 10pm, and at some point I need to go to sleep after working all night *sigh*
The bright side is I'll probably crash so early Friday night, waking up in time for a not-too-hot run on Saturday should not be an issue.

I just can't seem to ever get off to a good start. I'll even do a light warm up to help flush my legs, but it doesn't aid in my effort. I think it's more a mental thing than physical, but I honestly don't know. I'm certainly no expert on running.
Generally, I'll have a rough 1.5 miles and then all of a sudden my body gets with the program and my breathing evens out and pace really picks up. I'll have a lot of great energy for about 800m and then my body is like, "Okay, that's enough of that - go back to your usual pace." Then I'll get another energizing wind another half mile later and continue the same process. LOL. It's a bit frustrating, since my body doesn't want to keep a constant pace as much as I try. Maybe I'm doing it all wrong, but I just try to listen to my body and let it do it's thing.
@RunnerGrl1982 Don't worry! Slow first miles happens to us all, and it's totally a thing in running.
And it sounds like you've also got some sort of natural "intervals mode" thing going too!1 -

I am standing on my front porch having just completed interval training and I started laughing so hard at this I woke people up in the house🤣.
2.7 miles of intervals this morning for totals of 37.81 endomondo and 6.2 dreadmill. 44.01/50 for the month. With 6 planned on Sunday on the Tweetsie Trail thanks to @Teresa502 suggestion I will hit my 50 with a couple of days to spare. Will be aiming 10% higher next month.
Edited to fix spelling😉6 -

Question is - how long is it since it was packed away and had it been used.....?

@rheddmobile definitely buy a bike. If. I thing else it’ll help you become a better runner by strengthening your legs.
@_nikkiwolf_ I’m always vaguely interested in the idea of triathlon, if only to get me out more on the bike. Would be keen to follow a training plan if you have any ideas, even if I never do an actual race!!!
I took private lessons in crawl and worth every penny. Last year I also did an open water swimming course which helped teach me sighting and turns. Very much recommended. I have never learnt breast stroke. I should make that a target.1 -
Just checking in. I've been trucking along through the month of July. I've mostly been keeping my runs to two miles. And I just got back from a beautiful trip in the North Carolina mountains. The hiking was intense as some running. It turns out hiking up a mountain gets your HR up. I have a couple of races coming up in September. I'm looking forward to the cooler weather.

I was exhausted and skipped the 10 miles I had planned for yesterday morning. Then 2 things came up that interfere with the plan to get my long run done this afternoon. I might (probably will) get that 10 miles in today and then do the long run on Sun. I am on my way home from traveling this week for work and feel bad that from Tues. late until this morning, I only got 1 run in (early Wed. AM) while traveling. However, I have a couple possible ways to get my miles in.7

I don't get back there too often although my oldest daughter lives out there... I have driven out there to do the Glacial Trail Ultra 50M in Greenbush, and want to do the Kettle Moraine 100 Endurance Runs in Elkhorn and the Dances With Dirt 50K in Baraboo, but I don't know if I can justify the drive for a 5k, even if it would be a chance to enter the sacred halls of the frozen tundra....
I consider Elkhorn my hometown. Will be moving back up to that area next year.1 -

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Woo!
Ahem.
Ran a nice 1.81 miles this morning. It was sunny and cool, below 60 for the first time in quite a while. That got me to 50 miles for this month, four miles more than my previous monthly miles PR (last month, hah) with three running days still to go in July. Boom!
I spent some of the last couple of days going back through the challenge posts and linking my running updates to their respective days in my fitness spreadsheet because that’s the kind of nerd I am. First sentence of first comment in a challenge post: “Oh wow, this thread is huge!” It’s hard to believe that it was just the end of April that I was “work[ing] up to two runs [a week] of about a half hour each” and had set a PR for weekly distance at 6.75 miles (longest run: 2.67 miles). I’ve doubled my weekly mileage now and am going to try running five days a week starting next week (longest run: 7.01 miles).

@shanaber I'm down for the Packer 5K meet up next year! Already have it on my Google calendar of races I would like to do.
Had that inner dialogue with myself this morning: "Get up and run. No, sleep in. No, run. Sleeeep...ruuuun". Got up and ran, late, so I suffered the heat, but I ran.
Yesterday on the weather, the weatherman said the dew point in Tampa reached 80! "Pretty much as high as you can go on the charts!"

But I won't judge you for skipping the cheesecake, as I'm at a healthy weight too, and still want to lose about 3-4 lbs (still within the range of healthy). I get it. Congratulations on your achievement!
Today... weird that getting up at 5:45 felt like sleeping in. I did a little over 10k, then showered, changed into a clean set of sporty clothes, got everything I needed for the day into my running backpack, and ran about a kilometer to the main road to meet my ride to out-of-town work.
On my run this morning I saw what I thought was a dog crossing the road in the distance ahead of me, so was ready to be on the lookout for it. Turns out it was not a dog, but 2 of the biggest hares I have ever seen. They were huge! I stopped and just stood there watching them hop through the field away from me. Then as I ran off, I thought about how if I'd stayed in bed, I'd've missed seeing them.

I have a bike I’m going to start using it more. Skip’s bike we found in the garage is at the bike shop getting a tune up. It’s an awesome mountain bike just perfect size for her. I rode it 3 miles the other day, shifting from 3 to 2 wasn’t too happy but it got there, otherwise a beauty. She told the guy at the shop that she has no meat on her hiney so she needed a better seat, so he’s hooking her up with some $50 wonderful seat ha ha. She can pretty much bike all over town at school and on lots of great trails so this bike will be better than my mommy bike she’s been riding.
@mbaker566 what a sweetie she is.
I missed the post about the Packer 5K is that in WI? I assume, when? Maybe I can find my way there
Skip's been reading about ice baths and the benefits after training, she rode 7 or so miles on her bike yesterday and sat in an ice bath for 8 minutes after (the PT recommended it too). She ran for 10 minutes this morning and came back in the house without pain (yeah). I'm also happy to report the pit bull that attacks us a couple years back while we were running that has caused me to walk my poor Macy in circles instead of going passed their house moved out today !!! yeah!!!8 -
@shanaber @dreamer12151 etc
packer 5k was July 21st this year. so i guess it will be July 20th next year.
i posted a few pages back that there are some nice parks in the area (trails)
there is a hard trail run (cliffrunners 10k) that sunday (assuming they keep with the same weekends they did this year) by at high cliff. high cliff state park and has some gorgeous view on the cliff
also "nearby"Devil's Lake which is a very popular day trip location. Mirror lake is nearby.
going around the bay there is potawatomi state park, cave point county, and whitefish dunes
when i want west coast vibes i go to door county. it's also my annual half marathon.

@RunnerGrl1982 Don't worry! Slow first miles happens to us all, and it's totally a thing in running.
And it sounds like you've also got some sort of natural "intervals mode" thing going too!
Thanks for that! It's nice to hear from other runners that this is something that is normally happens. It helps put my mind at ease that I'm not doing something wrong. XD
I'd like to give my body credit for instinctively having an interval mode, but I think it's more my cardiovascular system can't keep up. LOL. I'm still trying to find a running groove.
I'm all over the place to be honest, because I'm always waging war internally to finish with a good time, when I just need to focus on getting the miles in and not concern myself about how fast I'm completing my run. It's something I need to work on. Even on my recovery days, I'm still wanting to push myself. So annoying. LOL Perhaps one day, I'll be able to find the 'off switch' to my brain when I go out and run.
