Oh man much sympathy. I had that kind of insomnia when pregnant - I actually got more sleep with a newborn who wanted to be fed every 2-3 hours than I did for the 7 or so months previous when I was up at 2:30 AM every night and often not back asleep again for 3+ hours.2 -
Tomorrow's trail race is gonna be FUN... guess I better not wear white socks!4 -

I suffer from early waking insomnia as well. It sucks the life right out if you. For me, it comes in spells and there is no rhyme or reason to it. You should definitely have a sleep study. I had one done because I also sleep walk. There was not much they could do for me but, if you have apnea, treating it will do wonders for you. My dad said his cpap machine gave him a new life after he was diagnosed.
I am sure you tried everything at this point but here is what helped me (for what my advice is worth):
1) I tried all kinds of prescription and over the counter sleep aids and find plain old Benadryl works best. It is not habit forming and does not make me groggy in the morning.
2) I go to bed REALLY early when I start having issues. My husband tells me I have the bedtime of a toddler. It’s like my natural sleep cycle goes from 8pm - 3am. Sucks for my social life but so does exhaustion.
3) I can’t work out in in the afternoon or evening. It keeps me awake. I also don’t drink caffeine after my first morning cup of coffee.1 -
Question of the Day: Since it is almost that time of year again, what do runners with glasses use to keep glasses from fogging while running in cold weather? Any experience with commercial anti-fogging sprays and glasses with anti-reflective coating? I don't want to dissolve the glare protection...
@sarahthes I'm interested in an answer to this too. I have tried everything, even rubbing saliva on the lenses. I had fog recently on some safety glasses at night. I think it was because of sweat from my face being hotter under the glasses than the air outside the glasses. But they were also safety glasses (i.e. very little room for air flow so nothing pops under the lenses).
I'm thinking about getting Lasik. I'm pretty close to running out of flex plan money for this year, so perhaps next year. But that won't solve for if wearing sunglasses or safety glasses outside.2 -
Ugh. This makes me so angry. I ran across a homeless guy in bad shape on my running trail on Wednesday. We were under an extreme heat advisory & the trail was busy that time of day — so I stopped and asked if he was okay. He wasn’t. He was hungry, thirsty and possibly having a mental health crisis. I was so nervous stopping to help him but I am so glad I did. It could have been bad though....
I found a park ranger to assist and I hope he is okay now. He was very heat stressed and dehydrated. But.... how many women ran by him because they were apprehensive and worried? I’ve experienced a few nervous moments from jerks who vocalized inappropriate comments while I was running. A few rotten apples ruining it for the rest of humanity. Ugh.

@sarahthes and @midwesterner85 while not perfect solution it is inexpensive. Last year I found online the idea of putting a very thin layer of dish soap (i.e. dawn, maybe liquid detergent like Tide might work, etc ) on the lenses closest to the eyes helped minimize fog build up. Instructions were to apply, let application dry and then lightly buff. Note: Don't apply soap or buff any on the outside lense as that becomes a frozen mess. I had moderate success approaching this way for sunglasses only. Agree that distance from face/venting also important as even this solution would fail if glasses were to close to head or on super cold days when wearing my balaclava and hot air from breathing rose up, etc.

I didn't read the article, but agree with your though about a few bad apples spoiling the whole barrel. I live in Iowa, so this has been on the news locally since her disappearance. Before anyone knew what happened even (it was suspected she was abducted while running), I was hearing comments like "she shouldn't have been wearing so little while out jogging." This is obviously a comment from someone who doesn't run in the heat. That's not relevant anyway... she can wear what she wants, and it isn't right to victim-blame. How is this still something said in 2018?!4 -
Just got news that UTMF has canceled the STY.
As I don't see myself running 170km anytime soon, I now have no mid-term goal (as all my training and racing for the next two years rotated around that race) and no motivation.
I will go wallow in my pain for a day or two before starting to look for well-organized 50 mile-ish races in interesting places.
Why did they cancel that?? That race ran along the same route as the big one.0 -

I have the anti-reflective coating. I've had it so long, I'm not sure I notice it any more; there was a time, years ago, when I switched to it and it was very noticeable. The most recent value-added option I got was blue light filtering; I see that as blue spots on my glasses in the mirror when there's a light source (usually daylight) at my back.
My glasses do not fog over in cold weather, unless I cover my mouth. Then, if I'm careful to only exhale through my nose I can delay the onset; but since I don't cover my mouth until it gets down in the single digits F, this isn't common for where I live. I don't use commercial anti-fogging sprays, but one of the earlier comments about soap got me thinking. A few pair of glasses ago, the optician told me the best way to clean my glasses was ordinary hand soap and water. You dilute the hand soap a little, and rinse it off well; but I wonder if there's a very slight residue that's essentially the same thing as the anti-fogging stuff.
Best tip for running in the rain or extremely cold weather: Take two pair of glasses with me when I drive to wherever I'm running. Put my current pair in the case, and run with my next older pair. Then put that pair in its case and put on my clean current pair to drive home. It works great, when I remember to take both pair of glasses with me.4 -

I didn't read the article, but agree with your though about a few bad apples spoiling the whole barrel. I live in Iowa, so this has been on the news locally since her disappearance. Before anyone knew what happened even (it was suspected she was abducted while running), I was hearing comments like "she shouldn't have been wearing so little while out jogging." This is obviously a comment from someone who doesn't run in the heat. That's not relevant anyway... she can wear what she wants, and it isn't right to victim-blame. How is this still something said in 2018?!
I've read so many comments that start I'm not blaming her but...

Running alone
Running in the dark
Running the same route
Did she have on music
She should have had a weapon
And on and on and on. I do all of those. I try to be aware of my surroundings and be safe but if some asshat wants to do something he will. I wear one ear bud or now my trekz so I can hear.
I've been honked at. Yelled at. Followed. Once on my way to work I was grabbed. It shouldn't happen but it does. I don't let it stop me from doing anything I love. Or need for my mental health.8 -

The hard thing is, just because you have chronic fatigue from celiac to explain being tired, that doesn't make you immune to overtraining in addition. I learned to ignore aches in my right foot and ankle because of arthritis . . . until one of those aches turned out to be Achilles tendinitis. Yeah, the arthritis means a lot of aches are meaningless; but they aren't ALL meaningless.
In particular, when you have a specific-to-you health or fitness issue, you need to watch how you react to the training plan. The canned training plans will all assume general health, whatever baseline of fitness they prescribe as a prerequisite, and staying healthy and uninjured for the entire training cycle. If reality fails to match all of these things, it can be necessary to modify the training plan to fit your specific circumstances. You can't make it to the finish line if you don't make it to the start line.4 -

I found 2-3 melatonin helps me the best. I used to do benadryl but it made me groggy. The bed time could be earlier but usually I just wake up even earlier.
So here I sit in Mayo's sleep center.3 -
Woof, my strength workout turned out to be a lot more difficult than I anticipated. Even if it hadn’t been storming all day I would not be up for a run after failing all three freaking lifts in completely different ways. Sigh. That was on me - I prefer not to lift to failure but I misjudged when planning and didn't adjust properly on the fly. Good thing I won’t need my arms for the race tomorrow because they don’t seem to be working quite right at the moment. As my husband pointed out when I told him about it, I'm really getting to the point with lifting where I could use some professional guidance.
I've been spending a lot of time thinking about the next six to twelve months and I think that this winter I want to 1) join a gym where I can get barbell training, and 2) find a running group. The Running Room does a half marathon in February and a lot of the stores have training programs related to their various races, so I think that would be worth looking into. I didn't run much last winter but I feel like I'm in a much stronger place now. That said, I think a little guidance and motivation would be helpful in the icy dark.

@MegaMooseEsq Crew cut is a little more material than I prefer generally. I was finally able to find some ASICS in quarter length so we’ll see how those work (just not tomorrow, because the "nothing new at a race" rule seems worth observing). I swear 98% of women’s socks are low cut or lower cut, though. Got to show off those ankles!
I also prefer quarter length to crew, and luckily for me Belega do quarter lengths in their Enduro and Blister Resist socks.
Sadly, being of a somewhat stocky build, I have cankles rather than ankles anyway.

I saw the Belegas on Amazon but decided to try the cheaper ASICS first. We'll see how that works out! I've got two pairs of Wrightsocks that have proven themselves on my long runs so far (although I have gotten occasional hot foot) so I'd rather not mess with something that works until I have to. Having to spend this much mental energy on socks makes me a bit cranky.0 -

I've decided that I'm going to start attending some of the weekly trail runs with a local trail group (huge step outside my comfort zone because even though I like people I have anxiety about NEW people) and I'm also going to be working with a running coach, with the goal of running a full marathon in a year.5 -

I've decided that I'm going to start attending some of the weekly trail runs with a local trail group (huge step outside my comfort zone because even though I like people I have anxiety about NEW people) and I'm also going to be working with a running coach, with the goal of running a full marathon in a year.
I'm not great with new people either. I don't understand people who get all excited about making new friends. I'm 35 and I don't have as much time and energy as I'd like to spend with the friends I already have. I think a winter group might be around my speed though, since: (1) cold weather means less chit chat and dilly dallying, (2) everyone will definitely be bonkers (I like bonkers), and (3) no shirtless running.7 -

Got a text last night from PT "0530 tomorrow?", so I decided sure, WTH, get up a half hour earlier and get a decent run in after the 30 minute circuit session. She hit me with dumbbell squats, deadlifts, rear lunge with a lift after, split squats on the smith machine, seated calf presses, windshield wipers, weighted crunches and medicine ball pullins.
Got rolling on my run after the PT session this morning, trying to maintain 12:15-13:00 miles. Splits went as follow 12:42, 12:15, 12:10 and 11:08 . Was really enjoying the run this morning and I am pretty much set with my pace for Sunday's run with @Teresa502 on Tweetsie. If anyone else is interested we are meeting at the trailhead in Johnson City @ 0730 and hoofing it all 10 miles to Elizabethton.

Ran a short local loop this morning for a good tempo run...a little over 7 miles with an average pace of 7:17 on relatively-tired-at-the-end-of-the-week legs. As an aside, August seems to be remembering that it's summer and it's been slacking off a little, so the heat is starting to return. Bah...can't wait for the temps to drop, but then before I know it, I'll be moaning about how much I miss complaining about the heat.

OMG I bought the ugliest shoes and I love them so much! Haven't run in them yet, just around the parking lot at REI, but I am feeling the zero drop magic. I have super UGGGGLY Altra timps. My husband says he won't be seen with me in public in these shoes, they are so awful looking, but they make me feel like the secret love child of a mountain goat and a ballerina.
I also tried on stiff Salomons, big puffy Hokas, minimalist Merrills ( which I also love but they didn't have any for sale, just a demo guy in the parking lot) and I can't remember what else. This is my first time getting to try all kinds of trail shoes since none of the local running stores stock trail shoes,
I spent way too much money on new running bras (which I also got to try different brands of for the first time ever), insulated water bottles and a belt, and a new racerback. Husband got new road shoes. We were the 180th and 181st people into the store and got free water bottles and gift certificates. They had the first people run in past the whole staff ringing cowbells, it was like being a champion at the Winter Olympics.
Wish me luck that my zero drop shoes feel as good when I go to run distance in them as they did in the parking lot. I've been warned to start with short distances and let my legs get used to them. So far my knee LOVES them though. I expected the puffy Hokas to feel good, but they actually felt really awkward, while the zero drop feels natural and cures my heel strike instantly.

If you're not going to go the gym route immediately, something that might help is having your husband take a video of you lifting so you can see yourself. Then watch some YouTube videos on the specific lifts, there are a lot of good videos on form and how to improve it.3 -

But more seriously - I probably break almost all of the rules, I just keep them to myself most of the time. I do not want new runners to follow my example - at least until they know their bodies much better. It is a bit dangerous, IMO for me to say all that I do. People could get hurt doing what I do... or worse, become JOGGERS! Or something
It is important to learn your body, and learn your level, and work from there.

No run today... pretty sure I am recovering from a glutening. Bah! But plan to try and squeeze in a long run tomorrow pending on some conflicting work thingies I need to handle.3
