September 2018 Running Challenge

@shanaber I don't know how to find them on the website but in the app I hit the three little lines for the menu and there's a challenege option. Some are meal based and some exercise based. If you log it automatically counts and notifies you if you've reached the goal.
@MegaMooseEsq thats why I also pulled up the challenge rules in the app and compared those. The addresses and phone numbers match and the phone number leads to the ad/promo agency. No financial info asked for. The DOB is what throws me but the rules say 18 or over so I'm sure thats the verification part.3 -

You already heard that just rounding up is fine (and what I probably would do in your situtation). But another option for you is to just move the decimal over one. So instead of 3.2km, just run 32km. That way it is nice and round.
LOL ok yeah I get the message, will attempt to cease being silly and just go for a flippin run :-D
Nothing wrong with being silly AND going for a "flippin run"
Better still...... bright pink shirt, brown compression socks, orange running shoes.... I did looking silly while doing a flippin run

I suggest you look up "Couch to 5k" and follow those plans. They are designed that people from 0 running to running a 5k nonstop.5 -

Not knowing how to run, not a huge problem. You can learn.
Not liking to run . . . a potential problem. If you try running for a month and absolutely hate it, it might not be your thing. That's okay. Life is too short to spend it doing a form of exercise you hate, when there are other forms your enjoy or at least tolerate well.12 -

@rheddmobile How frustrating! I hope you hear something from the race people. We have a huge 10k race here in Vancouver every April, and a year or two ago, a lot of cheating came to light. Who knows how long it had been going on? But with more people taking photos, those people who win despite being seen walking during the race are more likely to be noticed. Ha, my first thought was the same as Elise’s ... didn’t they notice that a man collected a woman’s medal? But that makes more sense that she may have collected it, which is truly awful.[/quote]
I was at a Trail Race on Sunday and they announced the ladies HM finisher ( remember Trail Race ) 1:23:xx.. Amazing Time. Wild cheering from all of us. The lady stepped up and said she couldn't accept the award because she had missed a corner and cut the course short. The cheering was even louder now for her. So there is still some honorable athletes. I heard ( didn't see it and not officially confirmed ) that she was given one of the random door prizes for her honesty.12 -
give it a go @Safati
congrats @RunsOnEspresso
thanks @zdyb23456
no run in the past 24. parents and i worked on the house. charged the vivoactive. woke up to lightening storm over the house.

@juliet3455 I wonder why she missed the corner; can you do that by accident pretty easily on a trail race? Or was it just that she regretted it once she realized she was taking a prize?0

Most people don't like doing things they aren't good at! When I started I hated running, but as I progressed I liked being able to run, and I loved the extra calories. Now I just love running.
I agree with the advice to look up a c25k program. I started with the app on my phone.4 -

@PastorVincent wow! Impressive rack. I’ve heard of them but never seen one worse with that amount of medals.
I think having a rack would inspire me to do races later.
@MegaMooseEsq Congratulations!
I just joined one too with MFP.
Good to hear there is acknowledgment on the winners. Did they say what you won?
That Nathan’s pack looks really nice and breathable. Let me know If it’s not too hot.
I have one I think different style has no belt in the bottom for support I think would bounce when running so, I use it only for hiking.
18.00 dollars sounds fantastic!
@rheddmobile interesting. I’ve seen at the end relatives take the bib off the winner and pretend their finishing and the cameras take their photo. But never the awards too. I know it’s serious. But to me sounds funny. (Dry sense of humour here).1 -

It is VERY VERY easy at some races, even some road races I have been in. I would assume she missed by mistake unless heard otherwise. *I* have done it by mistake, so I know it is doable.5 -

Good for her!
Ironically my husband and I figured out that we cut part of this race last year when we were trying to run it in practice and compared the official map to the mapmyhike record from our last year's race. Of course we were not within reach of any prizes, so it doesn't matter much, but it's embarrassing! All the people we were with turned one turn too early and cut almost a quarter mile from the end - which made our final distance 3.15 instead of 3.35 as the course is laid out, so we never realized we cut.
The extended distance explains why there are never any fast times on this race! This year's overall winner ran 18 something, and usually most larger races in our area have at least a couple of people running 15 something. My AG locally usually has a handful of women who run 25, and this race, apart from the one woman who it turns out was a walker, the fastest legit time seems to have been about 28.
Anyway, this year there were a bunch of orange cones blocking the wrong turn we took last year, so apparently the organizers noticed that a bunch of people cut there last year. Improvement! But then they timed the remembrance mile walk so the mile walkers were in the path of the runners coming in to the finish line, which was NOT an improvement.
This is me (702) trying not to collide with a herd of walkers and get in a finishing kick!

Did you sign up with your phone number age and full name?
I wasn’t given the option on any of that. Just join.
I would do like some one suggested reply via the MFP site only. If it’s legitimate it will get to the right people and you’ll still get your prize.
Congratulations again on the winning!0 -

September goal: 85 miles
9/2: 7 miles
9/4: 4.5 miles
9/5: 4.5 miles
9/6: 5.5 miles
9/9: 7.5 miles
9/10: 2.1 miles
9/11: 5 miles
9/12: 4.8 miles
9/13: 4.7 miles
9/16: 8.2 miles
9/18: 4.7 miles
58.5/85 miles completed
Today's run was 4.7 miles. It was another humid run, but I felt good and I really feel like my running has improved lately. I am hoping that I will finally be able to run a 5k in under 30 minutes. I feel like it is finally in my reach. I have one race planned on Nov. 11th. It is a local race and will be really small. It is the first 5k I ever did and it is a charity race for our local no-kill animal shelter. I did get an email this morning about a race 30 miles away. I ran it last year and that is where I got my PR of 30:46. Friday is the last day for early registration so if you want a shirt you have to register by then and the price goes up by $5 after that too. I kind of want to run it, but I don't know if I will. It was a nice course last year and I do like running in different places.
2018 races:
5/19/18: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon - 2:43:59.7. - 2nd place AG
11/10/18: Wags & Whiskers 5K7 -

There was one HM I ran where everyone was saying it was "longer than 13.1" but my GPS said 12.9 when I hit the line (there were several confusing spots and I was alone for a good chunk of it, so I assume I missed something) , so I kept running until I hit 13.1 on my watch at least.3 -

So, this is odd... I got the link today to the finish line video for my 5k. Looked at myself, usually I look like a shambling zombie by the end of a race but this time I looked almost perky, that was nice. What's odd is that I looked up my AG winners out of curiosity and my AG was won by a tall, athletic young man visibly wearing the bib number of the AG winner for the female 50-54 winner.
Also, the female masters winner is slowly walking a dog, and clearly her 23 minute time is her walking the mile walk, not running the 5k. And the second place finisher in the AG is also a walker with not a hair out of place. It's theoretically possible that both of these women ran like hell for the first 2.8 miles and then slowed to a casual walk when they turned the corner in view of the finish camera, but it seems damned unlikely. The course was set up so the mile walk started 15 minutes after the 5k and has the same start and finish, with the middle cut out.
I reported the man. The woman whose bib it was has run a couple of other local races and ordinarily runs 13 minute miles. It seems weird that anyone would deliberately cheat on a charity 5k, so maybe she gave her bib to her son or something without realizing he would win the AG. If he just ran with her bib that would be one thing, but he actually took the award away from the next person...
Wow. Cheating is sooooo frowned upon... I'm glad you caught it and reported it. I dont see how when they handed the AG award for a womans AG, they didn't notice the man wasn't a woman...
You can always post that on FB or uh, another runners site, I cant remember, letsrun maybe, if you dont get satisfaction.4 -

At my last (trail 10k) race they messed up the course markings and it came out way short (9.4k or even less). I didn't keep running to get 10 because I probably shouldn't've even started and finished with my leg hurting pretty badly, but was really worried that I had gone the wrong way and cut the course. Figured out later I ran the same as everyone else - they even had a water station in a place that wasn't supposed to be on the course.4 -
RunRachelleRun wrote: »@juliet3455 I wonder why she missed the corner; can you do that by accident pretty easily on a trail race? Or was it just that she regretted it once she realized she was taking a prize?
Trail races on single track are super easy to miss a turn even when they're well-flagged and have lots of marshals. It's just easy to zone out in the trees I find! I missed a turn twice (different races) but I did extra distance rather than shorting the courses.3 -
Well after three weeks of multitudinous and widely varied suckiness and no miles, I finally got out for a short run this morning. The upside is that my legs are rested and healthy. The downside is that I lost three crucial weeks of training for my race in a month. Maybe if I go hard between now and then and skip the taper I might still have a chance of squeaking past a DNF.15

Ah, thanks for clarifying. I've never done any that are poorly marked, though I do often rely on volunteers to direct me as RunsonEspresso mentioned - I never even considered they may get mixed up and send me the wrong way!
That's funny about your watch being short when everyone else's was longer. And good of you to keep running after the finish line. I cannot imagine doing that lol. My GPS is always longer than the race distance, but I figure it's because I try to stay on one side and am missing the tangents.
@sarahthes I registered for BMO half on Sunday. No idea if I will be able to do it, but I'm going to try. Let me know if you register.
Ooooh, @rheddmobile that must have been a frustrating finish. They didn't think the timing of that one through.

There was one race, I shared the story many monthly threads ago... where literally EVERYONE got lost, even though we all were carrying maps and it was a road race. Needless to say, I have no intention of running that one again.

Morning all! These stories of getting lost on races worry me. The one I'm doing Sunday is supposed to be 9k but they have a disclaimer that it's actually 9.2 due to a dogleg to cross a a road safely.
I'm getting really excited about this run!
I did 6.5k this morning and felt good! Could have gone longer but want to do a long run Friday so thought best to save my legs.13 -

That was my problem at my first 10K. I was super slow so only the stragglers were still running the same way as me (out and back). A bunch of us overshot the turnaround together as it was poorly marked!
@RunRachelleRun I will be there! I'm going to probably register tonight once I'm home from work. Ha, my parents will be thrilled - they're already trying to convince me to visit for a whole week and not just the weekend!3
