Yes you CAN gain weight

I don't know enough about the research on body types. I know that for years I thought I couldn't gain weight but have now found I can - if I eat enough. But, some days it's a struggle. For me, a treat day is when I take a day off from logging and just eat what I want, when I want, without worrying about whether I've taken in enough calories.4

"Might as well set your calorie intake according to your horoscope sign." You say its false. Thats your opinion, which is fair enough, but theres plenty of others who dont agree, not just me.11

Not really. Most people agree that somatypes have no basis in science. You can believe what you want and keep insisting but there is nothing to back up these assertions. So, they are basically viewed as nonsense by most.6 -

Fair enough. Everybody is certainly entitled to their opinion, even if there are no facts to back it up. There are still people who insist the Earth is flat too.7 -
And billions that believe in God. Are they better off consulting horoscopes too?
I think we'll have to agree to disagree and wait for the future conclusive evidence that we dont yet have . Good thread though. Ive learnt from it.11 -
Did you just correlate believing in God to believing in somatypes and that the earth is flat??? Cold, bro. :huh:9
-
Haha, no I meant that we can have our firm opinions, we can have some facts, many facts or no facts at all, none of that makes us wrong. Until all of the facts are in, and are absolutely irrefutable, then its all opinion. And thats what forums are for. Maybe we learn something, maybe not.9

Not true. I am a Sagittarius and it's pretty difficult for me to gain weight.7 -
Except somatypes have been completely debunked, for some time. I mean, yeah, you can say whatever you want, but hijacking this thread to continue to hype a theory that has been considered nonsense for awhile isn't necessary. If you want to continue arguing about it, maybe start a thread in the Debate forum, and post some sources you found convincing.10

"you can say whatever you want, but hijacking this thread to continue to hype a theory that has been considered nonsense for awhile isn't necessary"
My comments relate directly to OP's first post. Thats not called hijacking. And I did feel it was necessary to present a contrary argument to the original post . Ive had my say. I think Im entitled to that. I get good results, learned from years of experience whether gaining muscle or losing fat or both at once. No one needs listen. Good luck.9 -

@pinggolfer96 clueless about blatantly frequent & rude posts...go back & read what you type from time to time & take someone else's perspective/viewpoint every so often
Agreed with others posts mainly on many not considering how much NEAT really contributes to TDEE (not to mention NEAT is very difficult to consistently measure without technology). Massively under ate @ many point during my life for fear of getting fat; eating way higher kcals now just to maintain.8 -
Thats great. You found what works. 60 pound the first year. You were never an ectomorph. How old were you "a few years ago" How old now? Soma types are not bull. Theres some truth to it.
How old was I a "few years ago"? I was about 45.
How old am I now? I'm 48.
I joined the Army at 19 at 136# and 6'1. I barely squeezed by entry at the MEPS and after several years of service I got out at the extremely bulky weight of 145#. I was stronger than I looked, as I had very low body fat - but I was still skinny as hell. My nickname in the Army was Pumpkin Head... after that cheap horror movie monster. I was an odd looking fellow to be sure. lol
I was able to get bigger in my 30's - but that was without logging and just eating everything I could stuff into my face. Including the classic GOMAD. I did lift back then, but it wasn't very structured. I got very sick a few years ago and ended back at about 130... still at 6'1. I got back up to 180 just eating but ended up skinny fat. I started lifting again and using MFP about two years ago. I'm currently 215# and about 18% body fat and ready for another cut starting next month. The heaviest I was last year around December was 240.3 -

Exactly. I agree with the whole post but especially the bolded.3 -
It’s a forum.....I’m sorry if I’m blunt and straight forward with my input.....
I don’t troll, i just give blunt truth/ advice that some may be too sensitive to I guess11 -
"I’m sorry if I’m blunt and straight forward with my input". Nothing wrong with that man. You havent insulted anyone from what I can see, and you are genuinely trying to help people with your advice. Some people on here are not so respectful. That just hurts their credibility.11

Interesting story. You have a good physique. When you cut it will be fantastic. Legs up to Par? I Would put you somewhere between the slow gainer and easy bodyweight gainer. In my terms a mesomorph. I was similar. Pretty average, lacked muscle until I got into bodybuilding. Did the milk thing too, and I gained mostly fat. My heaviest was 198 pound at 5 ' 8" and I wish I hadnt done it. Just slowed progress.10 -

Hey I appreciate that!!! It’s funny as you and me went back and forth earlier I was like wait...are we in a debate (which I think is fine, I debate with friends all the time lol people think you have to hate each other, yet it’s just a discussion😂) or not noticing and agreeing on the topic we were discussing lol. Cause as I kept reading me and you go back and forth and then comments following it, we had close to the same perspective on things and it was tripping me out lol.
And on that note of insults, thank you. I think people get offended when they hear what THEY don’t want to hear or what they don’t want to believe....
Like it’s a forum for people to post and comment on topics....?? If you’re gonna get offended and hurt cause I didn’t put rainbows and flowers around it then I’m sorry??😂7 -
Just want to say that there is a whole middle groups between being abrasive and coming off as a know-it all and putting rainbows and flowers around it. You are getting some useful feedback. You can choose to put to good use, or not.
If you have a worthwhile message, communicating in a way that can get across makes posting it worth the time. If people are reacting to your perceived tone instead of hearing your content, why bother. There are some that won't hear it no matter what way you say it. But a less arrogant attitude would help get your message across to more people. FWIW.14 -
So if you tell it like it is, youre a "know it all" and have an "arrogant attitude"? but if you call someone "annoying", a "troll", "Dr Obvious", or be accused of believing "nonsense" then thats fine is it??? Thats personal insult and why has no one has said anything about that?? Disagree with me on an issue, thats Ok, make your point firmly, fine Ok, be a straight shooter, thats Ok, all good, but do it respectfully, and dont resort to personal insults because thats not ok.8

EXACTLY! +1 on this7 -
My opinion, the pinned thread is wrong in one very important aspect. The thread says "Statistically speaking, the average person doesn't have a slow or fast metabolism". I think thats totally wrong and I dont think reality bears it out. What I see is that some body types (somatypes) metabolise food faster than others. We've all seen average people who can eat what they want and dont gain weight. Other "average people" get fat easily. Metabolic rates are not the whole story but they are a big part of it.
You got so many woos over this, yet MANY of us have witnessed this with our own eyes. One guy I know was on a medically prescribed diet to gain weight using CICO, which included weight gaining powders, and years later, is still skinnny.

Do what you think is right, but I think the juries still out, so be prepared to be proven wrong.
I’d rather take anecdotal evidence and the reports from meta analysis studies that give us the most accurate answer than going off of life experience or a bodybuilding forum...etc. yes we have a lot to learn about everything, the day we stop learning I believe is the day we die. We always come out with new studies or discoveries, but what we have THUS far from the most accurate sources says otherwise in terms of what you’re trying to argue. See I’m not saying youre wrong, I’m not saying you’re right, I’m saying based on our best research from non biased sources. Controlled CICO/ macros is king in terms of body composition.
You are young. Some people can remember all the other nutrition science that we've believed and they backtracked on, essentially telling us to do the opposite and back and forth for years.
In some years, they will find out more about metabolism, and different metrics would be used to calculate needed calories for an individual.
Many bodybuilders and figure competitors complain about metabolic damage due to their cutting for shows, and find that even at a deficit they gain weight.
Being told that they aren't measuring their food right, or overestimating their calorie burn is ridiculous, as these people are literally professional dieters at that point.
They have to face that the science that HAD been working for them, no longer does. And at THAT point, they have to figure out what works for THEM, and not spin their wheels because they can't get over a math formula.

Thats it. The body changes, morphs, depending on the food/nutrition/exercise/exercise intensity/lifestyle stress/sleep/rest/ environments. And everyone is different. Theres no one formula.14 -

You don't know what else he is eating or how active he is, though. Weight gaining powders will still only work if they put you in a surplus.
Honestly I was skinny for years - most of my life - until I started logging. The reality was that I simply wasn't eating enough. And I'm nearly 63. That so called slower metabolism, that allegedly comes with age, never happened for me9 -

Fair enough but, it's not about being too sensitive. It's about the frequent instructions to "eat more", dished out on a daily basis on these forums to people who are having a hard time gaining weight. Not specifically referring to you here, though I have noticed it's something you say quite often. As has been pointed out elsewhere on this post, it's not that simple for some of us. Of course we know we have to eat more! Would you say, to someone trying to lose weight, well just eat less?3 -

I get the picture of entitled, know better millennial vibe from his posts...
Don't get me wrong, I do think his postings of pictures of "junk" food as responses is rather funny. But still, the words chosen & arrogance is rather off putting7 -

I don't think of you as a troll. You just leave really unnecessary and rude comments and posts from time to time. (For example, this one.)8 -
I'm often guilty of posting the occasional "EAT MOAR!!111" type response without explanation. I have to remind myself the name of this forum sometimes and that I should expect that at least half the posts will be about that subject.
Anyhow. Having been someone that thought they were a "hard gainer" most of my life, the biggest challenge I saw with myself and with others is consistency. I was that guy who everybody thought had an empty leg and who could eat an entire large pizza by himself - but what they didn't see is that after that meal I may not really eat a large meal again for another 12 hours. I was the guy who forgot to eat lunch and rarely ate breakfast. Who would decide to gain weight throughout my life and would stick to a see-food diet for a week and then taper off after my willpower and appetite tanked. Who might eat 5K calories one day and then only eat 1.5K the next. Consistency is key - and just like with dieting, a "bad" day can erase all that effort you put in the previous days, especially if your surplus is minimal.jseams1234 wrote: »Thats great. Unfortunately, no. They are lagging now. I blew out a knee a couple of years ago and I'm still waiting for an OK from the VA for surgery. I can work them enough to keep them from atrophying, but not really enough to build any mass on them. Thank goodness that long board type shorts are a thing, eh?
