I wasn't sure my legs were going to want to play today for my long run, they'd been very sore after Thursday's run and ST and we went hiking for an hour yesterday, but they were actually ok. Feeling it a bit now though so they probably won't be happy tomorrow, MUST remember to get a good stretching session in tonight.
I actually got to run in the rain briefly this morning and I LOVED it! Only actually rained for maybe 10 minutes but it was perfect, I was about half way through my run and it was getting a little arduous but the sudden appearance of water coming out of the sky leading to a need to quickly get my phone and fitbit (not a waterproof version) into bag before disaster struck and then the fun of running in the rain even made me forget a walk break!
Sadly, it stopped pretty quickly. Think my husband is thinking of calling the men in white coats cause he was up when I got home and commented on the fact I must have got wet, so I declared it was awesome! lol
2/10: 6km
3/10: 3km
4/10: 6km
7/10: 8.5km
9/10: 6.5km
10/10: 3km
11/10: 6km
14/10: 9km
October goal: 90km, stretch goal: 105km. Completed so far: 48km.7 -
How are we going?
I finished the Melbourne Marathon! That was brutal!! So warm!! My throat started constricting at 25 km and I had to walk a lot after that, and it became just a matter of trying to finish and staying out of Accident & Emergency.
The first half went great, and I stuck to my conservative pace, not getting carried away. Quick loo stop at 20 km. But it was getting warm. People’s were saying there was lots of pollen. I don't get asthma but I've had types of exercise asthma (it’s a thing, I’ve read about it) now twice. If I walked/ran, I was OK, but my throat was constricted when I talked, and for a while when talking after I finished. It was hard to breathe through my mouth when running after a while.
It got to about 24 degrees Celsius by the time I was done. I’ve only run in 10 degrees or less for the last 7 months. Out of 7,000 starters, 6,300 finished. I was in the back of the pack, and was interested to see all ages and sizes around me. I've never had to walk in a race, so this was humbling. Marathon number 3 if you count my 50 km. Proud to have finished at all.

Awesome job @Orphia !
Started my hour for Dennis a little late as I wanted to get to a location I knew would be carless for the whole run. Thinking about a person known for only a short time and who had such an impact on everyone here. Running at a very inspirational place for me, the lake
Pics to come after sunrise.9 -
@Orphia great job on finishing in very bad conditions!

Pics are in reverse order, dam first thing this morning, sun just breaking, view from the top of the dam river side and lake side.

@7lenny7 I'm not much of a trail runner, but it seems to me that anyone who might be upset at having mud splashed on them shouldn't be running a trail race in the first place. I get dancing around because you're worried about footing, but I don't get being upset at real trail runners doing what they do best. In a trail race, I just try not to get run over by the real trail runners on sections where my lack of skill is evident.6

I ran my part of the relay for @KeepRunningFatboy this morning. After uploading the run my watch did it's auto-stop-correction thing and stole a few minutes. But I took a picture with my phone at the end of the run to proof I didn't skip out early - even if that makes my average pace much slower 😉

Yeah, exactly. But people are people...3 -
@MobyCarp - congrats - so very impressive although it is a bummer about the medal. Like you said - it'll make a good story.
@rheddmobile - "We ran it in at 2:37:54, average pace 12:03, including the pit stop" - That is FANTASTIC!!!!
@shanaber - so happy the report on Hobbes is good.
@7lenny7 - sounds like a great race! Beautiful - fun - and an impressive finish.
@Orphia - congrats on finishing in brutal conditions! My hat is off to you.
@PastorVincent - beautiful pic.
I signed up for the Sedona half on Feb. 2. It's very hilly and at altitude (4500 ish) so I'll need to push my training to be ready. I'm so darn slow and want to/need to improve. So I'm asking for advice. I know intervals are important for speed work but I've done them pretty haphazardly. I should probably also increase my monthly mileage. I looked up training programs specifically for speed but not sure if need something that intense. I finished Wineglass in 3:08 - but best ever half was 2:47. I know Sedona will be a challenge for me - and even though the time limit is 5 hours I really would like to finish around 3 hours - or better. Advice? Suggestions? Anything is welcome. Full disclosure - losing 40 pounds would probably help more than anything.
Hubs doesn't want to come along so I asked my 3 daughters. However - they all have young children, jobs, and money is tight so we'll see. I have no trouble going by myself if that's what happens. I've done it before and I'm sure I'll do it again.
June goal - 44/44
July goal - 52/52
August goal - 55/57 miles
Sept goal - 72/60 miles
Oct goal - 17/60 miles
Sept. 30 - Wineglass Half Marathon; Corning, NY
October 7 - Viking Dash Half Marathon; Toledo, OH
February 2 - Sedona Half7 -

Looked at the course map. Man that is a lot of hills, but mostly on paved road? Altitude training is beyond me, but I'd say hillwork and lots of it seems like a good direction forward.2 -
@shanaber YAY! So happy for the Hobbes news!
Congrats @PastorVincent Beautiful family!
Isn't getting dirty kind of the point of trail running? I dunno, even when I get some dirt/mud on my usual route I'm like a kid. A few years ago one of my road-ish races was all mud and it was amazing! I am also not a professional trail runner and tend to line up in the back. I do well on flat and down but I have to walk most inclines due to asthma.5 -
A lot of talk recently about running in the rain, and I woke up to this:
My relay slot isn’t until later this afternoon, at which point the snow is supposed to have stopped and I might even get a little sun. I’m happy about the sun, but a little bummed not to get my first snow run of the season.
Facebook reminded me that it is the one year anniversary of buying my current running shoes. I was still “jog-walking” with the dogs at that point, but had decided that my ten-year-old shoes weren’t going to cut it anymore - as I recall, I’d started having some persistent knee pain about a week before buying the new shoes and had stopped running entirely until I could replace them.
And look at me now! 12.5 miles planned for this afternoon and bummed that I don’t get to run them in the snow!8 -
5.5 miles done this morning as my part of the relay for Dennis. It was a cool 47 degrees and raining but I loved every minute of it! KeepRunningFatBoy!I took this picture at the end of my cool down walk at the war memorial in our local park.10

Completed my slots for Run for Dennis relay. Was a nice run. Apart from a sharp pain in my stomach that started about 3am, I felt good. Really tried to relax my legs and run tall. Barely felt my legs hitting the ground. Got a nice rain shower the last few miles. Think I'll be ready for the Peachtree Classic 15K on Saturday.
So many people to congratulate...
@MobyCarp so amazing! Congrats on the AG win, and even being in contention fro Runner of the Year!
@PastorVincent congrats on presiding over your sister's wedding. Good looking family!
@rheddmobile Great job on the HM!
@shanaber - makes my heart happy to hear the good report on Hobbes!
@7lenny7 impressive race! Those guys deserved a splash of mud. What were they thinking?
@Orphia Congrats on finishing that marathon! Very proud of you.
@HonuNui - Awesome pictures!
@eleanorhawkins Yay! great that you got to run in the rain!
Not sure I got them all in, but well done EVERYBODY this weekend. You all killed it!8 -
@shanaber Wonderful news about Hobbes!
Congrats on your first half distance @rheddmobile! Love the family history you have in the area.
@Elise4270 Have fun in your race!
@7lenny7 I could imagine the bugler playing when you started your race. And I must admit to giggling a little at the idea of your splashing in the mud, to cheers and in spite of snide comments. lol.. What a great race!
Congratulations, @Orphia! I also experience exercise induced asthma when I run sometimes.
Have a great day, everyone!6 -
Today is a rest day for me, which means just a dog walk. My calves are in need of the rest.
I've only just found your group, so don't know any of you. But I want to say... seeing your support of one another is wonderful to read every day. What you are all doing for your friend Dennis... incredibly inspiring and beautiful. My hat's off to each of you.10 -
Did 10.5k and thought about Dennis the whole time, even though I've only been here for about two weeks. Up to 76k toward my goal of 120k in October.
5k race to get ready for next Sunday.7 -
Morning guys. Just heading out for my run for Dennis now.10

A little under 2.5 miles done last night. Longest continuous run in a long, long, time. Now that I'm done, I feel great. Also getting pretty close to my halfway point.

Yeah, exactly. But people are people...
They might be primarily road runners who signed up for this trail run. Part of LNT is to go through the most worn sections, and those are the parts with the deepest muddy water. In fact, I always used to get trail shoes with Gore-Tex, but have decided that I'm not going to make that a "must have" for my next pair since my feet will get wet anyway. Shoes are never tall enough to make a difference anyway.0 -
Hey all. Back from my "run". I was supposed to do intervals but honestly just wasn't feeling it. I did 2 1.5k runs but had zero energy. So I stopped and did a nice slow jog (wow 6min/km is a jog now) home. Not my greatest but if anyone would understand and tell me "you got out and did what you could, and that's enough" it would have been @KeepRunningFatboy Dennis, you are missed12

After days of glute pain, it is finally better. So thankful.
Busy weekend with my daughter in town so no cycling but did get in some runs. Her hip is causing her pain so she can't run until the PT is over. Next weekend I will be in NYC and hope to get some cool weather runs in!

Thanks all for all the comments and well wishes on Hobbes - I am certainly relieved but determined to be vigilant on his diet and follow up! Need my running buddy to be around for a long long time!
@7lenny7 - what's the fun of running in a muddy trail race if you tip toe around the mud and worry about getting wet or dirty? Crazy people who must not normally run trails.
@orphia - great job finishing the marathon under the hot, hot conditions! Exercise induced asthma is definitely a real thing - my daughter had it a few times while racing in swim meets. It can be pretty terrifying! I am so glad you were ok and managed to keep going!
@biketheworld - if I weren't already signed up for a HM that weekend I would come to Sedona and run with you! I have a brother and cousin who live there. If you aren't used to the altitude you may want to plan to get there a couple of days early to adjust. The first time I ran in Flagstaff (a bit higher in elevation at 7000) it felt like I had an elephant sitting on my chest and I couldn't breathe. That was the morning after we arrived. By the next day I was fine though but how you adjust is very individual. For training to increase speed I would look at the Hal Higdon Intermediate 2 plan that is designed just for that. (ETA - the 12 week plan is there if you scroll way down. You don't have to buy or sign up for anything.)
I love seeing all the runs for Dennis and pictures being posted! I know Dennis would be thrilled and a bit embarrassed about the fuss! #KEEPRUNNINGFATBOY!!5 -
Week 1:
1 mile
1 mile
3 miles
Total: 5 miles
Week 2:
1 mile
3 miles
1 mile
Total so far: 10 miles5 -
My running has been sporadic lately due to vacation, Hurricane Michael, and being on-call. I didn’t sign up for a time slot for the Run for Dennis, but I did get in a run this morning after I completed rounds at work, around 11am. Again, I’m taking it a little easier following the marathon, so just focusing on speed work and paying attention to my heart rate zones. Today’s run was 5 min warmup in zone 2, 5 minutes in zone 4, 3 minutes in zone 2, repeat 1x, then cool down.
10/7: 2
10/11: 2.03
10/14: 2.14
Total: 6.17/30 miles
I also think I am going to sign up for a 10K at the end of the month.7 -

Well done! Exercise induced asthma is absolutely a thing. I think half the world's athletes have it. I get it. Wasn't really able to run more than a km before my chest got tight and I would be wheezing. Fortunately my running buddy is a GP and she recognised it. A couple of puffs of salbutamol before going for a run, and I'm sweet, and the difference is amazing. I went from walk/run 5k for weeks to running 5k complete within a week of having an inhaler. Definitely worth asking your Dr about it.3
