I'm Disappointed

I am relatively new here (a month) and I generally just lurk on the forums. There are tons and tons of discussions on just about everything. I love the challenges because they help motivate me a month at a time. I also like the food and nutrition topic. It just takes awhile to figure out where everything is....and what you like. You continually learn new things if you keep reading. My weight loss is focused on low carbs and high protein as well as keeping my calories under 1350 calories per day. So far so good.4

Well, thanks all for the enthusiastic responses. I guess I have to drill down a little further. I really like the process of counting everything and recording it immediately. I am a little bit OC and it fits right in to my habits. I think its going ok but I am only working with a 500 cal deficit below base metabolism (which I have had to adjust downward).
My approach is to just eat the right amount of calories of the foods I want to eat. Of course, peanuts and ice cream are pretty much gone, but I substituted frozen cooked lobster claws and knuckles ($50 for 2 pound bag) for pork chops and that seems to free up a lot of room for popcorn and baked potatoes (my other two favorites).
Anyway, I'll try to get to those counting threads and contribute if i can.

Try the General Health and Fitness subforum. I think people discuss calorie counting more there.
If you are just starting out you may find these threads helpful or interesting-

I personally found prelogging my food for the whole day in the morning before eating anything to be helpful for me to make better choices.4 -

There actually is quite a bit of discussion about calorie counting and related subjects here. Not sure where you’ve been reading so far that you haven’t seen it.

Well first of all, what topic in particular are you wanting to discuss or read about? If there isn't a thread already about it, you can start your own. And second of all, if we were only allowed to discuss calories and calorie counting this would be a very inactive forum. There's only so much to say about that. And third of all I read a lot of comments relating to calories actually so I'm not sure what you're talking about anyway. Unless you're only hanging out in the chit chat section.5

What is TDEE?0 -

Ahhhh.....thanks.0 -
on my sedentary days, i do not feel starved on 1200 calorie days. i also almost always have ice cream every night.
nonsedentary days i eat about 75% of my exercise calories back or all.
mostly, except hormone induced, i don't feel hungry.
i do not not eat any type of food unless i do not like the taste.
down 20 so far.
now i have to be good about using my scale. i'm very bad at it2 -
I have the calorie consumption related to exercise set to zero since I am so sedentary. I know the meaning of TDEE but with zero activity, I think of this as BMR. Probably the same for me.

You don't stand up? Walk to the bathroom? Shower? Etc.7 -

If you're truly sedentary, your TDEE is likely in the ballpark of your BMR x 1.2 or 1.25.
If you want to discuss calorie counting, and be critical of those who you think don't, learning the basics early on may be helpful.4 -
Use the search tool and search for “count “ and “log”.1

BMR is not the same as sedentary TDEE. BMR is the number of calories it takes just to carry out the necessary metabolic functions for life. Think of this as what it would take to maintain your body if you were in a coma. Unless you are completely bedridden, you're burning more than your BMR. (And even if you are completely bedridden, you're burning a bit more than your BMR, assuming you do things like sit up and move your arms.)7 -

BMR would have probably been legit to use for my OH's bedridden 90 year old mother, but not so much for the rest of us.6 -
In the General Health, Fitness and Diet forum there is a sticky thread called Most Helpful Posts that lists out the (wait for it) most helpful posts by someone's definition.

Start reading there. It's a sticky for a reason.4 -

I picked this app because of my undertaking for calorie counting and limiting daily intake based on a conservative long term weight loss goal. The MFP database is clunky but ok I guess, but the community here does not seem even remotely interested in calorie counting. I see endless discussion of recipes most of which look horrible, and things like suggestions of how to squirt yogurt on a chocolate brownie or use cauliflower instead of bread, etc. All without any actual discussion of calories.
The closest thing I found was a discussion on whether to weigh shrimp tails or the oil the shrimp are cooked in.
Counting calories at the moment of consuming them, or immediately thereafter, is a training discipline to psychologically connect the weighing and counting with the food choice decision and thereafter results in better food choices. Doesn't anyone here care about that? I read for an hour last night and couldn't find a thing. What gives?
Since most of your posts have been in the Food and Nutrition forum, the only explanation I can come up with is that you're deliberately selecting threads that deal with topics other than calorie counting, or hanging out in the Fun and Games, Chit Chat or Recipe forums. If you want to start a thread about calorie counting, you will get a lively discussion on calorie counting. Try it.5 -
OP, it's very helpful to filter out chit chat and fun & games subforums from the recent discussions. Go to the main forums list page and click the gear icon next to the forums you don't wish to see. Check 'unfollow.' Then go to recent and under 'view' choose 'following.' This helps clean up some of the less pertinent topics if you're browsing by recent.
This. I filter out Recipes too, as it's not something I want to be reminded about. I go in there just when I'm specifically looking for something.
I spent a lot of time trying to learn how the forums and how the food log worked before passing judgment.
@kimny72 , I usually just a lurker here....is there really a way to filter? Or do you mean you just kind of bypass those forums? I would love to be able to filter these as well. (I just don't go into the ones I am not interested right now).0 -

On the website, if you go to the forum home page, and you hover your mouse over each forum title, it will reveal a little gear wheel. Click it, and unfollow any forum you don't want to see in the Recent list.
Next, go to the Recent list. Next to the green Create button, just above the blue bar with the column titles, is the word "View" with a drop down. Choose "following". It should now only show you recent posts in the forums you didn't unfollow.
I don't remember if these settings carry over to the mobile app or if you have to redo it (and probably slightly differently) on the app. :drinker:
Edited to add: There is also a "View" drop down on the homepage where you can not see your unfollowed forums there too. I leave it on "All" though because sometimes I do want to go in there for some reason.2
