I forgot to mention, I had a close call last night with a vehicle. I waiting to cross the busy street by my house, after sunset. The light turns green, I have my walk signal, I check for cars trying to squeeze in before their red light, then we start running across.
There are four lanes of traffic from my right. A left turn lane, two regular lanes, and the right turn lane. The two regular lanes have cars which stop the proper distance from the crosswalk. As I'm just about to pass that second car, an idiot driver flies up in the right turn lane, fully covering the crosswalk before she stops. She missed me by maybe 2 feet. She had no idea I was there. As she's flying through the crosswalk I threw up my hands and and yelled at her, "WTF?!?!?" She damn near *kitten* her pants. It was pretty clear she was shocked and mortified at what she had almost done.
Confession time. I saw her coming up because I've learned to give intersections a thorough look not once, not twice, but continually. I saw her coming up in that far lane behind the other cars. I knew she probably wasn't going to see me. From her speed I suspected that she'd be going across the crosswalk so I purposefully got close enough to her path that it would look close, but I was safe the whole time. Because she was negligent in looking for pedestrians, I wanted to scare the crap out her and teach her a lesson. If that makes me an *kitten*, so be it. This is the same intersection where my son was hit by a car while riding his bike a couple of years ago because of an idiot driver and I have no patience for them. The next time it might be a kid crossing on his way to the nearby playground.
Be safe out there.
ETA: When my son was hit the lady knocked the bike out from under him, he rolled on the hood and then off to the side. He had a few scrapes and bruises but was otherwise OK. It was close though. The bike pedal was bent inward from the impact. That could have been his foot. The bike was a total loss, a birthday present just a few months old, was a total loss. The gal who hit him stopped, rolled down the window, asked if he was ok, then said, "That's why you need to watch for traffic!" then sped off. My son was too shocked to get a plate number. We called the police and filed a report but nothing became of it. I kind of have a vendetta now.

Just got back from a little shopping spree over my lunch break. A bought a North Face running hat, two pair of Drymax trail running socks, and a pair of arm sleeves. I get to wear them all tomorrow for my long run. I almost bought a pair of Salomon Sense Pro shoes on clearance for $50 but then I remembered they're a high drop shoe and I'm migrating to lower drop.
I think I may go back to the store again after work. They have a North Face jacket on clearance. It fits great and feels great, but I left it on the rack. Now I want it.
Score! GO GET THAT JACKET!
I decided I will go back after work to get it. I sent a photo of it to my wife and she was all over it. She said it was my color and would look great on me. And it's only $40, down from $100. It has the store logo on it and I typically shun wearing advertising but I love this store, I know the owner and am more than happy to wear their logo. The "TC Running Company" on the arm sleeves is the store name.

@7lenny7 GOOD FOR YOU! Most especially because YOU were being aware, but also because you made that driver think twice. SHE gets a next time because YOU were paying attention. I don't think that makes you an *kitten* at all. It makes you smart. And hopefully it will make her smarter.7

It looks like I will not be running again today - my hamstring is still a little tender and it looks like my free time will be used taking the cat back to the vet, as she didn't eat again this morning. The vet was able to eliminate a blockage as a suspect, which is a relief (she does like to eat things she shouldn't eat) but means we get to jump back on the Wheel 'o Testing to try and figure out what IS wrong. Or she just gets better on her own, which would be nice. I'd just like her to do it before I drop too much more cash on it - yesterday was not cheap.
We also got to spend a hot stack of cash on a plumber this morning - our fancy new (to us) on-demand water heater has been acting up, which meant the last time I was able to work out I was not able to take a hot shower afterward. Only tangentially related to running but very important. I do miss the days when we had a landlord to pay for stuff like this, but so it goes.
It looks like tomorrow is not going to be the day off that I'd hoped for, but I am still hoping on getting a run in if the hamstring decides to allow it, and if I can get out on Sunday as well I will just barely hit my stretch goal for the month. I've been pretty good on walking and stretching this week so I haven't been totally inactive, but I'd really like to hit the pavement for real.
I've heard mixed reviews about these. They're already pretty pricey to begin with, so I can't imagine how frustrating it would be if they weren't working! Our water heater has gone out 3 times in the 8 years we've lived here. Even though the water heaters are usually under warranty, we've still had to pay for the labor to put the new ones in. Something has to be up with our setup to have that many issues, but my husband says if it happens again he wants to do on-demand. The last plumber said he didn't recommend them.0 -

This scares me to no end. I've almost been hit so many times, but now I have teenage sons who are learning to drive and I'm terrified they might hit pedestrians. A few years ago a bicyclist was hit and killed nearby, and the person who hit him, I think it was a teenager, didn't even stop. I don't know the whole story, but they figured it out when they saw the damage on the car later. It's unbelievable.

@7lenny7 glad you were looking out. That is hilarious that you scared the *kitten* out of that driver. Good for you!
Speaking of "I forgot to mention"....
On last night's run I crossed a busy street, and about 5 seconds after I got to the other side I saw a squirrel starting to cross too. Cars were barreling down the road, and just as one was about to pancake him, he (and I kid you not) jumped up, made a 180 IN THE AIR, and the car just missed his tail by inches. As soon as the car passed, he made another 180 (on the ground this time), and proceeded across. That was unbelievable.
Also on that run I honestly saw @PastorVincent's honest to God doppleganger! I've seen this guy before, but always from behind. Yesterday I happened to be running the opposite direction, and I could have sworn it was him (based on his profile pic and product reviews he has posted). They say everyone has one.13 -

It might depend on where you live. In Poland they're pretty common, and the idea of paying for electricity (expensive) to keep a large tank of water (that you don't have space for anyway) hot all the time, doesn't make sense here. Our house once had both, except the electric tank was installed wrong and they didn't use it. But when most people have a gas on-demand system, plumbers know what to do with them and you can buy quality units.4 -
Thank you for all the 'welcome backs'!
I had kind of a funny run today. I was really in the mood to get out at lunch to run but I was also feeling completely and utterly wiped out (spoiler alert - realized afterwards that it was bc that lovely monthly visitor was returning ). So, I headed out just planning to grind through 3 miles. As I was about 0.2 of a mile from my turnaround point a really good friend of mine from work, along with another coworker, drove past and shouted cheerfully, loudly, and encouragingly out the window at me. Something about that gave me a sudden Mario Bros power-up feeling and I decided in that instant that I was NOT turning around and would continue on another 1/2 mile and then turn around! So, I ended up with a whole extra mile above what was planned. It was awesome! But now all afternoon I've been sitting at my desk wanting a nap
@7lenny7 - I've def done that a time or too and if it means you're an *kitten* then I am too.
Happy Friday!!!13 -
I planned least night to run with my running club (my annual run with them...) - Plan A was to finish work bang on time, drive home, then run 2 miles to meet them, run the 5 mile run, then 2 miles home. Plan B was drive home, grab my stuff (because I didn’t take it to work with me) and drive to meet the club.
Plan C happened. - postpone the run until the next day and get a good nights sleep!!!
So tonight I went out straight from work, aiming for 7 miles as I won’t get a long run at the weekend (Mothering Sunday and visiting my folks). I used a 4minute run/30second Walk interval. I think that’s roughly the right mix - might stretch it to 5 or 6 minutes but it felt good. Made it back to my car just before sunset.
Happy weekend and racing people who are!10 -

Yesterday a run did not happen due to work craziness and general feelings of exhaustion. Today I packed for both inside and outside running options as it was raining and chilly this morning. But it turned out to be sunny and right around 50 when I left work so I went with the outside option, and ended up being a little overdressed for it.
I'm struggling a bit with running these days, just getting to 30 minutes is tough most days. And it still was today, but my pace was quite a bit better outside than on the treadmill. It's getting to be time to start to ramp up mileage a bit to train for spring races and right now that seems a little daunting. Hopefully I'll get there gradually and I'm sure I'll feel a lot better when the work stress not so high in a couple of weeks.

Cold, raining, and dreary out today, so I just got a few quick miles in on the treadmill.

@7lenny7 - I have done that a few times myself so I might be an *kitten* too. I have even done it when I have been still on the sidewalk and getting ready to step off the curb. It is also why I always have Hobbes sit before I step off just in case he might jump out in front of me and get hit. I also once banged on the front fender of a car that almost hit me as I was crossing in the cross walk. I hope it makes people change and look more but I am not convinced. They just get complacent and think no one is ever there. Our city also installed GIANT stop signs because it was such a problem. Cyclists have been hit with at least one killed and lots of kids come that way from school so I just don't know why they don't put a light in. Hope the jacket was still there when you went back. I would have called and asked them to put it aside for me.
I was feeling queasy since yesterday afternoon and after I ate my pre-run toast, banana and PB. I suspect it was a bit of food poisoning, from my breakfast out yesterday, based on the way it came on and the symptoms. I didn't think I was going to be able to run today so I waited and had some dried ginger hoping it would settle down. I figured I could give it a try and worse case come back home but it was gorgeous out and I felt ok. Not quite 60F with a breeze and a few puffy clouds. I changed my run/walk intervals again, this time to 5min run and 1min walk which seemed to work perfectly. I am hoping to get to maybe 30secs walk for the HM or I will leave it at a minute depending on how I feel as it gets closer. The plan for today was for 4 miles easy, run pace around 12 for the run intervals for me... got in 4.2mi but had to fight to keep the pace on the run intervals down. I just don't seem to be able to run at a 12 min pace very well. I guess my easy pace is closer to 11 or 11:30 because that is where I seem to always end up. I have a long run tomorrow of 8 miles and will keep to the 5x1 intervals for it too.
