So now I’m being told Keto is the only effective way to lose weight?

Nothing could be farther from the truth.
I've lost 40+ lbs 5 different times over the last 6+ years I've been an MFP member, simply by counting my calories and ensuring I'm in a deficit. Done by meticulously logging what I eat.
I have noticed that instinctively I gravitate to a "low-carb" type diet when I count however. Not entirely sure why, I believe it has to do with my mind saying I can have 8 oz of X + a plateful of Y and it's 300-500 calories or I can have a much smaller portion of Z...I tend to want to try to eat calories that are dense, usually meaning a much larger protein intake.
I know many people that do Keto however, and haven't heard them complain about it to any real degree...maybe try it to see if you like it????5 -

100% untrue. I did it for a while, and it helped a lot with cravings. But the only way to lose weight is to create a calorie deficit.3

All? Like respiratory, cardiovascular, elimination? How did you survive until you learned that sugar was an issue?8 -

I think there should have been a smiley at the end of his comment6 -
Well being on Keto lifestyle change for 1.5 years and have many others that have been doing it longer than me. If your educated about any diet and stick with it you will keep the weight off. If you go back to eating the way you did prior you will gain it back, common sense. I have no issue with Keto personally and have done many other types and found it difficult for ME to stay on them. Keto retrained my body, I eat fewer carbs, yes more healthy fats, and protein and have taken almost all processed food out of my diet, glutton, and most especially sugar. My health has gotten far better, I sleep better and just had my second physical and my doc says I am very healthy and issues I had prior completely gone. He says like people on here are saying it is a lifestyle and if it works for you then do it, however consuming like some of the ads say major amounts of bacon etc you looking at other health issues. I eat sensibly track everything and love the fact I am down in weight, my skin healthier, etc etc. Good luck to all on whatever you choose to use, just ensure you realize it must be a lifestyle change, not a fad and yoyo lifestyle.7

Hey Mike,
I am a nurse and I am doing Keto right now because, medically they are discovering a lot of things about keto that are good for the human body. One reason is because of the negative effects of sugar on people. Sugar causes inflammation in the body, or should I say it feeds inflammation in the body. They have done studies on cancer pts and found that those who went without sugar recovered better then those who did not. Excess sugar in the diet also leads to insulin resistance, diabetes, fatty liver, heart problems ect.
The short answer to this is because when the body spends all its time processing sugar & carbohydrates into fat it has little time to do anything else. As sugar has increased in the American diet we, as a nation have become sicker and sicker. And its not just fat people who are sick. If you are thin and not getting the right amount of nutrients then you can also be sick.
On you tube there are a few doctors who I recommend checking out their videos if you are interested in learning about or trying Keto
one is Dr Ken Berry and the other is Dr Jason Fung, another good reference is Dr Eric Berg who is not an MD but still very knowledgable on the subject and has a lot of information as well as medical references on his youtube channel. All of these doctors have a wealth of information on the topic. I use them to keep me motivated and also for information. Good luck on your journey!
It says something that when these theories are being pushed, it always comes down to the same couple of quack doctors being referenced. If these things were true, they would have broad medical consensus backing. But it's always just the same snake oil salesmen pushing dubious information.21 -

It's really all about creating a moderate, slow calorie deficit consistently enough (read "months") to allow your body to lose excess fat gradually (1-2 pound per week max). I've tried cutting too many calories too quickly, and my body says "we must be starving, so no fat loss." And if I cut down but don't do it consistently for weeks into months, my body says "oh, this isn't something we're doing for very long, so no fat loss." LOL
Remember: Our amazing bodies have survived over millions of years because of our ability to store fat very well, and to maintain balance, or homeostasis. Work WITH your body, and all will balance out.
it's too bad that it didn't work this way for all the people that are actually starving to death. why didn't their bodies say "no fat loss" and keep cruising along? starvation mode is a myth.
I'm talking about temporarily cutting too many calories, which is EXACTLY why MFP tells you if you are and warns to eat more. Not only will you start burning muscle for fuel, you are hurting yourself long term and wrecking your metabolism by feast/famine back and forth. Those who are truly suffering from long-term starvation and malnutrition waste muscle and whatever fat they have left until their bodies consume themselves. Our bodies are always seeking homeostasis. When they can't find it, they and we suffer.14 -

Weird that I know men who ran marathons, did bike events, and completed tris pretty darn fast when consuming sugar.
Also, I don't consume much added sugar, and I'm not keto at all at the moment. So I can only assume that by "sugar" you are including intrinsic sugar and all carbs. No, there's no indication that that's bad for us or that all foods containing carbs lead to today's favorite buzzword, inflammation. Hello yabberjaw...you just cant mention certain "dr's" to these people. its a touchy subject with some. i myself listen as well. what I do is take what I can use and leave the rest that either doesn't work for or doesnt apply to me as whats good for some isnt necessarily good for all. But when you mention certain youtube channels and or "dr's" the ones who have their panties in a bunch will come for ya....😁
Um, correcting misinformation and pointing out quacks does not = "panties in a bunch." Don't know why you'd insult rather than engaging if you think what someone said about some piece of information from a diet guru was unfair or inaccurate. Seems a bit passive aggressive.
If you think we are wrong to disagree with the idea that carbs are all so terribly bad for our health (despite many traditional human diets being typically higher carb and yet quite healthful in outcome), I'd love to understand why.
Remember, the question in this thread is whether OP MUST go keto to lose weight -- surely you aren't suggesting he must or should to achieve such a result?23 -

If by certain doctors, you means ones who are widely discredited and who have no level of expertise in the fields they speak on, but use their "Dr" title to dupe people into thinking they're experts... Then yeah we feel some type of way about them.19 -
What I want to know is, is "keto crotch" for real?6

I haven't heard this one before, but in addition to being pretty silly, it's the opposite of the truth, since carbs are the most quickly and easily digested of the macros. Also, all bodily functions will shut down completely in the absence of sugar in your bloodstream and then you will fall over dead. Our bodies are versatile so you don't have to eat sugar to have sugar in our blood - we can turn fats and protein into glucose to be used for energy - but every cell requires energy to function.6 -

Many people come to MFP to learn about different ways of eating, and they have genuine questions. People read articles on the web and come here to discuss whether what they read is a good idea or not. That's okay, that's allowed.
Surely we can all share our experiences in a friendly, non-judgmental way? There is no need to get personal.
Thanks for your cooperation. :flowerforyou:
