My desire to lose weight has blossomed along with other changes I'm making.
Its my 60th birthday in October of this year.
I'd like to lose 80-100lbs and go grey too, I can see silver coming through and I'm going to embrace it.
I've not been in the best of health the last few years but I have my Doctors permission to start a sensible diet.
I'm 5ft.5. Not sure how much I would like to weigh for my target weight.
130-140lbs idk.
I've lost count of how many times I've tried to lose weight before, had an account on MFP for a few years, haven't used it in ages, but its never too late to start over again .
Obviously can't lose that by my birthday, but I can make a start.
Look forward to interacting with everyone.

    Congratulations on STARTING. It's the first step to success! Also, kudos for recognizing that you can't do this fast. Go slow to win.

    Set good goals. Make them challenging but obtainable. Give them deadlines. Make them measurable. Then work on them every day. You can use the guided set-up to develop a goal for calorie consumption each day. Try to hit that - don't try to undercut it. The next most important thing after starting is to STICK TO IT! Stopping is the sure way to not meet your goals.

    What goals are you setting for yourself long- and short term?

    If you are looking for camaraderie among people striving for similar goals, you might enjoy a group I'm involved with called "Lose 1 Pound a Week and Keep it Off." It's a private group, so when you click on that link you'll have to request to join, and you'll be approved pretty quickly.

    There's only two requirements. First, enter your starting weight and goals for each quarter of the year. Easy. Second, enter a weekly weigh-in. Also easy. We have some ongoing other challenges, all of which are completely optional. They can be fun. We also try to do a "special challenge" each week, although we don't always get one up. The group is run by a few volunteers, and we're off doing fun things sometimes.

    You'll find camaraderie, and while you are the only one you can be accountable to, some people find it easier to be accountable to themselves when they share with others.

    Check it out if you want. Invite your friends. We're not really recruiting, but... we're kind of recruiting.

    I started at your same height (5'5") and about the same age: I began dieting in April 2015 at age 59, joined MFP in July 2015. I "only" had 50-some pounds to lose, though, and reached goal weigh in early 2016. I've been maintaining a healthy weight since, now age 68. If a hedonistic aging-hippie flake like me can lose weight at 59, I'm betting you can, too. :flowerforyou:

    Maybe you already know this, but it's not essential to have a goal weight up front: What you put in your MFP profile as your goal weight has zero effect on the calorie goal it will give you. The implication is that you can put in a guess for now, and figure it out as you get closer to where you want to be, and see how you feel/look then. (The goal weight you input is just used for some supposedly-motivational messaging.)

    Goal weight is pretty individual, so I won't opine about what yours should be: Personal preferences matter, having a maintenance calorie goal one can live with is important, body composition (how muscular the person is) makes a big difference, etc.

    One thing I will say is that IME the quality of life improvement from being at a healthy weight has been absolutely huge. I'm cheering for you to get there, because I think you'll find it's worth the effort.
