Because to be honest, I usually don't
Like tonight: The weather here changed abruptly, and I didn't pay attention to the weather forecast when I decided to take the bike to work this morning. So I got to cycle 5km through pouring rain to a meeting this afternoon (with a change of clothes from my office in the backpack, but still no fun during the ride). Then home another 6km in a 50/50 snow/rain mixture after work, getting soaking wet and chilled again. When I had changed into my running clothes, it was dark outside, 0°C / 32°F and a mixture of a little rain with a lot of wet snow.
I had hill reps on my training plan, but when I reached the bottom of the hill, I decided I'd just run it once at a medium effort and then continue on at an easy pace.
Despite the cold wet dark weather, it was a nice 7km run. Just not what I had planned - but it's like the act of going outside again despite the weather used up all of my dedication, and there simply wasn't enough left to push myself for a harder workout
I'm a bad runner. I rarely do speed work. Mostly because I cant be bothered figuring it out when Im running. I like to pick a pace and stick somewhat close to it. Some days Ill aim for a fast 5k, others i go for a slow relaxing run. But actuall speed interverals. nah. but my focus is distance not speed.
That said what you describe, I'd have done the exact same thing.5 -

Agreed - this is a real pet peeve of mine, especially the pelvic exam requirement. Yes, it's a good idea to get regular screenings, but it's like requiring someone to get a blood panel when they buy aspirin. Considering the abominable state of the health insurance system in the US, it's yet another hurdle for low-income people, especially in areas without easy access to reproductive health services. /steps off soap box, hugs @mbaker566.
I gotta say this is one thing I don’t miss now that I’m menopausal. Doctors holding my life hostage. It’s ten thousand times easier to get a prescription for opioids than birth control. These days I only have to deal with doctors holding my life hostage over my thyroid and diabetes meds. Every six months I have to jump through a bunch of hoops in order to be allowed to keep living, it’s ridiculous.
Just more examples on how the US healthcare system is just screwed up. Universal healthcare may not be perfect, but its a damned sight better than worrying about what your insurance will/wont cover, and about which hospital you can/cant go to. Also, We have far fewer specialists - so the only time I saw an OB/Gyn was when I was in hospital having my kids. thats it. anything else I go to my GP.
And I WORK in healthcare. Its so nice that our patients dont have to worry about how to pay for their x-rays. That said we are stingier with them than the US is.
i don't have a gyn unless i need something "special" (which i will for a copper wire or implant). i've not had one for over 10 years. i can get what i need from my GP typically. tomorrow's appt is just with a gp.
i suppose it depends on the area. i also never had kids. when your pregnant, you get a ob. or if you want to be.
we have a great office that is runner friendly too.2 -
debrakgoogins wrote: »Hello all. I disappeared for the month of March but am back - you've been warned. March was a mess for me. I battled Plantar Fasciitis, shin splints and a sinus infection. On top of that, we had some brutal weather and I worked 17/7 storm power restoration efforts for a week. Despite all that, I completed my first live 10k race and a 5k race (with my best pace ever). My half marathon is coming up in 25 days - eeeek. I am so worried because I am way off of my training schedule. The good thing is that there is no required pace or finish time. If I have to walk the whole thing, I should still come in with about a 16.3 pace. It's not what I want to do but it's an option. So...goals.
Yoga at least three days a week
Run three days a week until my race
Walk twice a week
Successfully complete my first half marathon
Welcome back @debrakgoogins! I was just thinking about you the other day. Sorry to hear about your struggles during March, but you've got the right attitude! Onward!1 -

Today I woke up feeling better than I have in a while, but still a little stiff and sore. I went back and forth on running and strength class but ultimately decided to take the day off from the tough stuff and dive back into the mobility work I’ve been neglecting. I finally took the recommendation of half of the internet and checked out some Yoga With Adrienne videos, and so far so good! I’ve been alternating short videos with work and chores, the windows are open and the sun is shining, and generally speaking life could be a whole lot worse.
It seems that the only thing to do about this hamstring/hip/left-side-posterior-chain situation is to rest when it hurts, keep up strength and mobility work focused on building up my glutei and relaxing my quads and calves, regular massage and chiropractor visits, and maybe don’t run home after heavy deadlifts for a while. Maybe check out foam rolling? Sounds painful, but anything to get back on the road? Does anyone know any good resources for getting started with that?
This last week or two really did a number on my head. I found myself questioning my decision to rest even when the pain had gotten to a point last weekend where I was limping when I walked and having trouble sleeping. I was alternating between feeling like I was making a big deal out of nothing and worrying that I’d never be able to run again, and it took me way longer than it should have to reach out to a professional.
This has been a bit of a wake up call to me that my anxiety isn’t as well managed as I’d like and I’m looking into finding some professional help on that end, but I’m guessing I’m not the first person to struggle with this, mental health issues aside. Any tips on how to keep cool while dealing with aches and pains and more serious injuries?
Also! I registered for my first half marathon of the year yesterday - Carnation, WA here I come! Slowly but surely!

Like many things, it depends.
For shorter, faster speed work I usually need the peer pressure of club practice to get it done. I can do longer tempo intervals on my own, but it's nice to do them on club practice evenings so I can go back and tell people what I did.
I find it really, really hard to be motivated to do speed work outside in the winter. Apparently this is common, because club practice is on the indoor track from the start of January till Daylight Wasting Time starts. The club doesn't have formal practice in December after Club Nationals, but some members will get an early start on the indoor track from mid to late December.
In a light rain, I can do speed work on the outdoor track; but only with peer pressure. No way would I do it alone. When it's not track season, I find it really hard to get up for intervals shorter than a mile.
When the weather is hot and humid, that slows down the speed work but doesn't eliminate it. Peer pressure still helps, but I could do intervals alone on a track if I'm motivated.
Of course, all running is easier in nice weather. Frequently, bad weather will cause a modification of the speed work assignment, rather than a total elimination of speed work; but sometimes it's just a washout. +1° C with wind and heavy rain would typically get me to give up on speed work even with the peer pressure of club practice.
Hopefully the rest of the really bad weather this spring will happen when I can't run anyway.2 -
Holy crapola! I'm so glad I found this group, especially since I'm new to the whole message board side of things on MFP! 3 days late but so in, nonetheless! Setting a goal of 100 miles for the month of April! So far I'm 8 in13

Dog was over the run at about 1.7 miles, so I dropped her off and finished the remaining part of the run. New running shoes felt great.
Whew..first time I read that I thought your dog was run over halfway into your run! I have always been slightly dyslexic. Glad the new shoes are working out.
@kgirlhart Sounds like you had a great run! Good for you!
@Elise4270 I feel for you. Hope you figure out an exercise you can do.1 -
@Elise4270 A very belated Happy Birthday to you! (Or super early for next year...take your pick)
@runwithbritters Welcome!
Today was hill work, so it was back to the only decent-sized hill in town to run up and down it 10 times. For good measure, once I got back from the run I did several minutes of "dead treadmill" to cool down - basically get on the treadmill and, without power, push the belt manually.

And thanks @workaholic_nurse and @garygse for the wishes. If I missed anyone forgive me, I’m near brain dead. Weather is springish and brings allergies/migraines and I have been studying my kitten off... periacetabular, and corocoracromimal.... er sumthin like that and some mesenchymal cells too. Sounds like a Jewish party! Hey! Osteoclasts! Dee de dee de dee... (if I were a rich man)... there’s cake! Who wants some? It’s almost kosher (pan itself isn’t).7 -

@rheddmobile {hugs} i am sorry. I take meds for an autoimmune disorder that keep me a slave to my doctor’s office lab tech. Thankfully, I am blessed with a job who provides good insurance. The USA health care system sucks... 🙄

Monthly Question:
Okay, on a lighter note ... group monthly question. I finally dug my race swag out of a drawer and did something with it. The online race bling display options were CRAZY expensive!!!! I came up with my own $13 hardware store / craft store version. If you participate in this crazy race thing, how do you memorialize your accomplishment? I am looking for cute ideas on the cheap.(saving the money for shoes and stuff)

Current year non-marathon medals on the left. Marathon medals from all years on the right. Prior years' non-marathon medals in boxes in a bookcase, to be examined or discarded by my daughter after I die.
The rack on the left was affordable at the Wineglass 2018 expo. The rack on the right was expensive at the Boston 2017 expo, and I had to send it home by FedEx because it wouldn't fit in my suitcase. Certainly someone with metalworking or woodworking skills could build something as useful without spending as much money.
Non-medal stuff is randomly stowed in a hutch or pressed into kitchen duty if useful. For example, Wineglass gave me an 8 ounce wine glass as generic race swag, that I use for milk with breakfast. The 14 ounce wine glass for finishing 2nd in the age group isn't a practical size, so it sits in my hutch.
After a few years, I gave up on saving bibs from non-marathon races. There were just too many of them. Pictures are generally digital, and I don't always buy those. The marathon bibs are in a file cabinet, haven't figured out a way to display them that I like.

Wow @amymoreorless and @MobyCarp , same wall color. Love both of them! I dont have the grand achievements (yet. I want a sub 2half).
But this is what i got:
Just wall hooks and the medals orderd by years, then bundled on the hooks. 2010-2018.10 -

Went out after work for about 3 miles. I got that same wierd cramp in my upper abs again after about a mile. I actually stopped and let it pass then started back running again, nice and slow. I finished the run and it didn't come back, so I'll call that a win. I wish I could figure out why it happens, but at least it's not happening often

Hi All! I’ve been MIA, but I’ve still been running! I last posted in December so it’s been awhile....
January- lots of cold, long runs. Met another mom who runs, started running 1x a week with her. Definitely fun to have another mom to talk running with, plus she makes me run faster!
February- dreaded hip pain returned. Scaled back on mileage, cross-trained (spin classes), new shoes, started strength training with a TRX system
March- ran the Shamrock half marathon and PR’d! Took over 5 minutes of my best time finishing in 1:51:58!
It was a great race and my stomach held up. I skipped gels and only had a few gulps of Gatorade at each water stop.
After the Shamrock I started a mid-level half marathon training plan. Fewer miles than I was running prior, but my April goal is to stay pain free. I am doing a TRX routine 2x a week and an Orange Theory type class at the gym 1x a week.
I also hope to keep up with the thread. I see some of you on Strava

So, I've had an interesting evening. I got home in plenty of time to do an outdoor run. It was a perfect day temperature wise, but I just wasn't feeling a hilly driveway run. So, I opted to wait until Wheel of Fortune came on and do a treadmill run. I actually did pretty good. I went 2.4 miles in 30:28 minutes...did 4 min run/1 min walk intervals.
The real fun started when I spotted something odd in my basement bathroom floor. It was a fairly large cornsnake!! I spent the next 30 minutes trying to figure out how to catch it, without having to touch it, so I could take it out and throw it back into the woods. Unfortunately, it had it's tail in the space between the cabinet and the wall and managed to pull itself back up into the opening. (I tried to pull it out, but those suckers are strong.) So, I spent the next hour Macgyner-ing a system that would hold it and not let it out into the house, should it decide to come out of its hole during the night. A friend is going to come help me try to remove it tomorrow evening. Fingers crossed we can.14 -

Since the only speed work I do is on the dreadmill, the weather is not a limitation. In fact, bad weather makes it more likely I might do speed work.
