Back from the expo. No bib thingies. The only thing they had was a belt and I do not want to have to choose between my hydration belt and the bib belt. But I did get some loot. That is all my stuff, save I added my wife's grey shirt up top to show off the back. She got an identical set of stuff, just in small... LOL
Not pictured is the 1/4 pound of double dark chocolate that never made it home. Not sure why...11 -
Haven’t run distance for 2 months. Just ran 1.3 miles. I’m starting my first month low at 20 miles and focusing on speed. Hoping to get in a mile in under 6 minutes by the end of the month.11

It poured today but cleared up long enough for me to get out for 7 miles tonight. More rain is headed our way overnight. We're supposed to have a swim meet in the morning but I guess we will see what the weather does.

Will be running a half mile tomorrow. Hoping that the rain is minimal but would rather have rain than heat and humidity.
I met Frank Shorter at the expo today and got his autograph. He is a really nice guy. He still runs and also bikes and swims. I can still remember his 72 Olympic victory. It seems like yesterday. I was in line with another runner who started running after watching Shorter and Dave Waddel. Those were the days.7 -
Running The Pittsburgh 5k this morning. Tomorrow is the marathon so my real goal is to take it easy out there and run it as a shakeout run, NOT A RACE.
Told my wife I am going for a PW not a PB or PR.9 -

But I'm guessing you paid more than $20 to sign up.3 -

Hmm. It magically dis-apperated back to Wonka?
It grew legs and hoped out the moving train window?
Ya know, I hate it when that happens. Good luck this morning to y'all!

So I am hanging out in the parking lot, waiting until it is time to walk to the starting line. Noted raining off and on right now. I have to leave early for thy he event because the streets are blocked to the north and south of my house.
My right hip is aching....I am convinced it is early arthritis.....the last time I ran the ache lasted until I finished running 2 miles.
My goal today is to finish under 2:57. My last race was in March. It was interesting. I will try to summarize both races.
So sorry about all the injured runners in our group. I sometimes grumble about getting up early for these events but realize that I am lucky to still be participating. I hope the injuries heal quickly and that you can be back quickly participating in your favorite races.9 -

Haha, that's exactly what I thought! We picked up our race packets last night, which consisted of a bib, pins and leaflet (which was also emailed as a PDF).2 -
Text message says @PastorVincent finished the 5K in 39:07. Same time is given for his wife, so presumably he chose to run with her in order to save energy for the marathon tomorrow.11

May Total: 0k
May Goal: 100k
January Total: 131k
February Total: 159.5k
March Total: 183k
April Total: 126k
Next year when you pop in here claiming your December 2019 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Run at least 4 5k races.
Get under 30:00 and a PR for 5k.
Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.
Run the Year Team: Five for Nineteen
Back seems worse today, even though I didn't do much yesterday to aggravate it. Patience...patience... Ate the first radishes from the garden this morning.
2019 Races:
4-13 Shine the Light 5K - 31:12 chip time; First Place male 65 and older
6-1 Freedom 5K (Will be off the schedule due to another commitment)
6-30 Strides for Starfish 5K9 -
TLDR; I FAILED TO RUN A PW. *sigh*
The Runner of Steel Challange every year is to run the 5k on Saturday, and the Full Marathon on Sunday. Since I normally like a short run the day before a major race, it works out. It is also the one race a year I run slow enough to run with my wife, which actually was an issue this year. In a 5k I am typically sub-8 min miles, she is more like 11 min miles.
The first problem was at the Expo the night before I missed getting a gear check bag. Well, this morning I hit up the local runners group on Facebook and one of the runners had picked up extra. Perfect. We met her at the 13 min/mile pacer and now we have gear check bags for the marathon. Phew! (For those wondering why to join your local running group, here is an example of why it is helpful! )
So we line up behind the 13 min pacer. Ar first we were planning to run with the pacer, but the pacer was doing 30s run, 30s walk. That would drive me nuts, so we decided to run without them.
We start off okay... but then my wife (Kristi) saw someone running with an American Flag and decided that she would pace off him... he was doing a sub-9 min mile. We had to reign her in. This kind of thing happened several more times. She kept picking up the pace, and the third person we were running with could not keep up. We had planned to run it slow. Ah well. I was shooting for a personal worst (PW) but failed. It was only my 39th slowest 5k ever.
But it was fun and the weather was nearly perfect. High humidity but 58F with a light breeze.
But we finished with the 13 min pacer right on our heals, and all three of our watches showed about a 12 min pace. I think the pacer got a bit off beat.
Pics in spoiler tag...12 -

So to be clear...
A shirt for Pittsburgh Maraton
A shirt for Pittsburgh 5k
A shirt for Steel City Road Runners (running club)
(plus I used my wife's SCRR shirt to show the back)
The rest is the junk that comes in the bag.
We paid $65 each for our entry as an early signup. It was like $150 each or something by the time registration closed.6 -
@PastorVincent Glad you had a fun 5k and managed to reign it in. Sorry about not achieving that milestone PW
@ereck44 hope your race is going/went well and your hip is OK.
Good luck to any other racers this weekend!

I did a short shake-out run with a couple of friends today before tomorrow's 10-mile Mountain Goat race. I feel pretty good in terms of recovery but my knees are still a little sore from all the descents last week. Hopefully the hills on this one won't be too much. I felt winded after 2 miles today which doesn't really make one feel good about racing 5 times that in the next 24 hours, but it's often the case on the days before a race that I feel like "I feel tired now, how am I ever going to survive this thing". My friends report the same feelings so I'm sure that's common.
After the run, we had a nice coffee and I hit the grocery store so I could get that over with. Now to get the dog tired out and then curl up and enjoy a lazy rest of the day.

The plan wanted a 16km long run but it's the season of catkins in Beijing (it looks like it's snowing out there!), and my allergies were not having it. Might or might not make up the rest of the mileage tomorrow morning.
HM next weekend. Any training not done until then isn't going to hurt me...
Upcoming races:
05.12 Beijing Tongzhou Canal Half Marathon
11.17 Shanghai Marathon8 -
Great story about a guy that has run EVERY Pittsburgh Marathon since 1985 when it was initiated. Last year his time was 7:07, so not a superstar. Just some guy that has has a rough time of it.

@katharmonic hope all goes well tomorrow for your 10 mile race!
Probably missed a bunch of you that were racing this weekend, but best of luck to all!
Not my best 15 miler this morning, but got it done. Had to take a few 30 sec walk breaks 😭

So my PACE tattoo is here. Going to shoot for sub-4. The tattoo is calibrated to 3:55 so if I can stay close to it I should be good. Weather will start in the low 50s F and climb into the low 60s F so not horrible. Humidity in the 90s though.
The real trick to this race is accounting for the fact that the first 13 miles are MUCH easier terrain than the second 13 miles. So positive splits are actually a reasonable tactic though I am going to try and run true to the tattoo. Never really tried that before so no idea how well it will go.8 -

What I find amazing is he can't train for it because of whatever is wrong with his bones so he did that 7 hours and all the previous races on just doing it!3 -
I know there are lots of people racing today and tomorrow so just going to say good luck to everyone! I know @amymoreorless finished marathon 1 of her 2 marathon weekend and @RunsOnEspresso finished her HM! Congratulations to both!!!
This was my last long run before the half next weekend. I had planned for 8 miles and I was super frustrated that I seemed to be running well and fast but the last couple of miles were taking forever. I was really starting to worry about completing a half if 8 miles felt so terrible even if I was running faster than planned. Even the 12 miler I ran last week didn't feel this hard. It ended up that Strava had a problem around mile 6 and where I thought I should have been well into mile 7 I still hadn't finished 6... So I ended up running around 9.5 miles at a pace much faster than I have been running up to this point...
