Less Alcohol - OCTOBER 2019 - One Day at a Time

I have posted here a couple of times but tend to disappear. I think the idea of being accountable scares me, as does the success of many of the participants. I'd like to start having an AF day now and then and stop over drinking when I partake.
Do not be scared of US. We are not here to condemn anyone. You will get tons of support and maybe even a few laughs out of us😉5 -
Hi all! Great job to everyone checking in! I agree that this thread helps me stay strong.
I am 4/6 days AF. On the two days I drank, I drank less than I normally would have. Woohoo! Still aiming for 23 days AF this month. I have a girls’ night on Saturday night so I will be having two drinks then.
10/1 - AF
10/2 - AF
10/3 - 1 drink

That is a GIANT WOO HOO. less is less no matter how you look at it.😁3 -
That's been a tough one for us as a couple @ellie117 we used to go gambling, hang out with friends,go to concerts at the weekend and now that I don't drink and hubs only drinks a little,we tend to just not go out much anymore but tbh I don't feel deprived but I do wish we could find healthy activities to do together on the weekend, waves to the gang and have a great day 💖
It is really tough. Especially when the other half will not budge at all. I can go dry on the activities we do as a couple...Hubs can not and he gets upset if I do not drink. It is so stupid that he feels threatened.4 -

Don’t let fear hold you back. We don’t bite! We all have our successes, and our fair share of “failures” -ie. not sticking to our plan. We are all in this together!
As for fear of being accountable, it’s very insightful that you recognize that! That’s fantastic! Gives you a great opportunity to discover “why”. I love a good growth opportunity!4 -
Went out to dinner tonight, ordered wine, didn’t even finish the glass. Just wasn’t feeling it. Hubby still doing great with Sober October.
Someone above asked about Tolerance changing as you start cutting down on alcohol (sorry I didn’t write down who that was!). I notice that my tolerance has plummeted, and I think it’s a good thing. Keeps me at one drink most of the time! No shame in being a “cheap date”.5 -
Back home with reliable wifi and my scale.
I actually lost weight while away on vacation in Dallas despite Margaritas and stuff! Lots and lots of ice skating : - )

Morning all
Dipping my toe in here, after reading everyone's comments ... you seem a friendly crowd
Last week I told DH I was going to do an AF week, not having done such in a very, very, very, long time. So, yesterday, I went out, bought 2 litres of sparkling water, put some ice in the fridge, left the part bottle of wine in the fridge. As if it's there, I feel less pressure than if it wasn't.
I'm a sort of all or nothing kinda person, so yesterday was AF for both myself and DH, as he said it'd do him good too. This, I have to say, makes it easier support wise.
However, two things ...
1. I actually calorie counted everything yesterday, came in under my target ... and gained a pound this morning. What's that about ?!
2. I slept awfully, really, really, badly. I went to bed earlier, I read my book for a while, but I just couldn't get off to sleep, and then I kept waking up. I do know I slept, as I had dreams. So I'm hoping that this is a temporary thing.
Told DH I was only planning on AF one day at a time. Chunk it up, I say !
Today, I am planning on AF also. I have a hospital appointment tomorrow where they measure the pressure in my eyes, so that's a focus for not drinking tonight.
Good luck everyone, whether you're having an AF or an A-planned day today

Life is too uneventful to post. And that's a good thing ! 69 day AF today.
But this is NOT an AF site, it's about moderation....getting to a place where we can choose to have a drink, or not. Lots of nots.
Slowly coming off the "when I lose enough weight I can start to drink again" mind set. Alcohol is NOT my reward [keep telling myself that...].
Glad to hear that I'm not the only one who keeps that last bottle, or half bottle, handy. Stops the panic of not having any in case of ...need...??? Even if it is slowly turning to vinegar.
@MissMay ...Yep, me and Jimmy Carter, we celebrate together.
Gotta go say goodbye to my Northern Magnolia, the tree choppers are here.
Good luck y'all.4 -
Thanks for the reassurance Womona and Miss May. I did have a martini last night but did not go back and pour more. I feel much better this morning than I did yesterday after overdoing it on Sunday. I am going to try for an AF night one night this week.5

813 alcohol calories and 32.5 ounces of wine consumed this month and 3 AF days/ 3 non.
I beat myself up for what I do. I beat myself up for what I don't do. I have to stop punishing myself, for what I am not sure. Anyway, I'm giving myself a 300 calorie budget for the week. Two 6 ounce glasses is at least a plan.
Don't be hard on yourself, shoot I'd drink that much in one DAY so you're doing a fab job💖 I have so many people I wanted to comment to but it's a pain on my phone to remember their exact screen names cuz it's hard to scroll back, grrr! Just wanted to say keep up the good work all, thing of brighter mornings, better sleep,a brain that's sharp and not feeling like it's heavy and throbbing, better skin, better energy, good memories built, weight loss (eventually) so many positive things happen when we cut back or cut alcohol out and definitely no judgement here, trust me I've come back with my tail between my legs disgusted that I drank-its pointless and only make you feel defeated so for me I'd just keep drinking more😭 dumb choice, the people here and on sober squad told me to not feel like a total loser and it felt great not to be lectured and I was able to forgive myself, focus on the positive and keep going! Have a great day all!7 -

Hi all! Love catching up on how everyone’s doing. Great job to everyone - even if you didn’t exactly what you planned, you’re here checking in and gaining insights.
6/8 AF days this month
This month has been easier so far than September. I did have a pang yesterday and today because of some sinus pain. For some reason, I associate wine with taking that pain away when it probably actually makes it worse because it dehydrates me. I took some Tylenol (I am allergic to ibuprofen 😩) and it helped.
Looking forward to my girls’ night this Saturday. I really, really just want to keep it to two drinks. I need to come up with a plan on how I’m going to do it. My job is to bring the stuff for the margaritas, but I think I will also bring some fancy seltzer’s and some cranberry juice so I can keep drinking but not alcohol. Let me know if you have any tips!2 -

Who is this 90 day challange with? MFP or something like Beachbody's 90 day?
Last 90 Days is through Rachel Hollis. She is a motivational speaker and runs a company with her husband called Hollis Co. You can find her on all the social media platiforms. The Last 90 Days is essentially not waiting until January 1 to make improvements in your life. It includes a daily commitment called "5 to Thrive". The 5 things you do everyday are (1) drink half your body weight in oz of water, (2) move your body for at least 30 minutes daily, (3) give up one food group - in my case alcohol, (4) wake up 1 hour earlier and use that time for yourself, and (5) complete your gratitude journal. There is also a goal component to it - visualizing 10 goals you are trying to reach and working to start meeting one of those. There are a couple of Facebook groups related to the challenge - The Last 90 Days and Made for More if you are interested. Rachel and Dave do a very humorous live morning podcast - I have been getting in my 30 minutes of walking while listening to them.4 -
Morning/afternoon all
07/10 - AF
08/10 - AF ....
Although, slightly sabotaged, I'll take it .... I was working later yesterday so I left a recipe for DH to make on the side, however, I didn't look mega closely, so some of my "reserve" wine went into the dish (lemon and fennel risotto with prawns) .... it was lush, and I didn't drink any wine, just "ate" it ...
Hospital appointment went AOK this morning, eye pressures were "OK" and better than if I'd have been drinking the night before I believe.
I know this is a thread about less consumption, rather than abstention, but for me, my aim, this week, one day at a time, is abstention, and then I shall review again where I'd like to be this month.
I have a blood pressure test on 21/10, so that may give me a focus on what I want to do ...
Sleep last night, was once again, rubbish, but this time I think it's because I physically overdid it yesterday and at every movement ... ached !!
Hope everyone's day goes well6 -
Morning all,@fitand50inSD I could do them all except get up an hour early 😆 I got a new puppy and he's such a morning person he's irritating! @Plan2Be no alcohol is still"less" alcohol so whatever your plan is still fits,I'm more on the abstaining side just for myself, ugh have a lingering cold-i feel like this is gonna be a bad year for colds cuz it hit early me,hubs, daughters and g-kids all got sick already no fun! Wishes for a great day 🌺5

Surpassed 1 full week AF! I've only hit this stretch 2-3 times since turning 21 (almost 9 years ago..)
Feelin' good, husband and I even treated ourselves to a pizza/wing dinner to celebrate the no alcohol calories and the amount of money saved by not buying alcohol to stock the fridge over the weekend.
Hope everyone is doing well!8 -
So I had my wine tasting party last night. A lot of people ended up not coming due to a rescheduled soccer game (I had intentionally scheduled this for AFTER soccer--go figure). While I controlled the 2oz pours, people showed up at different times, so we kinda went through it multiple times. So I had a lot. I didn't feel drunk, and I drank water after (and was eating relatively healthy throughout it all), but I didn't sleep very well last night and had a bit of the night sweats which had gone away when I stopped drinking.
Overall, I knew that day would be a mind game and I had more than I planned, but what I found was that I was TRULY drinking it socially, not drinking to relax/buzz/cope. I felt different. And today, I don't want any. My mind didn't immediatly stress about my day and do the auto response of "I'll have a drink when I get home." It gives me hope that I can drink socially or have a glass with dinner ever so often without going overboard (i.e. no more drinking at home alone just to drink). Today, I'll stick with my ever faithful coffee maker and SodaStream. They have not steered me wrong yet!!8 -

That is such a good point. The past few months I've been noticing I'm just drinking to drink, just as a habit, not to feel drunk or anything. I would consume all those calories, but not feel relaxed or buzzed. Once this month is over, I think I'm going to aim to just have a glass or two socially, but not pound them back on Friday/Saturday nights like I used to.
Good luck to you!4 -

Morning all
So, early evening I threw a wobble .... "well, one night off won't matter". Now, I know it won't, but my aim, is to complete one week, just one week, and then take it from there. So, after 2 AF nights, I decided to already "quit" my own personal challenge.
Now, I rarely have a drink before 20:00, habit eh. But I'd started to think of excuses / reasons to go and buy a bottle of wine at 18:00 .... dinner wasn't cooking properly, celebrating my eye appointment, oh anything really.
As it was dinner did in fact come together (chicken and butternut squash curry ... the butternut squash at that point was rock hard) .... and DH came home and said "how's the 3 days without alcohol" ... which loosely translated into ..... "shall we have a drink tonight" ...... that spurred me back into supporting him/supporting me mode, and we both had an AF night
And once that 20:00 had passed and I was settled with a pint (or two actually) of sparkling water and raspberry cordial, all was well with the evening
DH says he is sleeping better, I'm finding it hard to get off to sleep, but I think that when I slept last night, I slept better .... my FitBit verdict seems to concur-ish ....
My initial weight gain has gone (I wish the other xxx stone had, lol !)
My BP is up, but I read somewhere that is fairly common, and should come back down to where it was in a few days. I shall keep monitoring, as frankly, if I can see a reduction, that will be a great motivator.
As I say, one day at a time for a week, and then I shall review.

Times like these are, I think, so important to remember. When you resolve to have less or no alcohol, you come to these moments, and you convince yourself that you're giving in tonight. 'Hey, you had a good run.' But then, when you put your foot down and say 'No!' it gives you an example to look back on.
Next time you feel like giving up, you get to say to yourself, "Hey, I've been here before. And look how well I did then!"
