While I didn't make my monthly goal, I'm mostly okay with that. In order to make it, I would have had to ignore some aches/pains that I felt were better not ignored. I also need a break, mentally and emotionally, so I'm giving myself permission to run when I feel like it and not when I don't, for the foreseeable future. I'll see you in the December thread, quietly cheering you on with likes and hugs.

Race Report:
Oxbow Ultra

The Oxbow Ultra is a timed event held in St. Paul, Virginia. It was a really small race with about 50-60 people in all the events.The options for running were 6 hours (either am or pm starts), 12 hours or 24 hours. I signed up for the 6 hour event which started at 9:00 am. Each loop was 5 miles and you had to complete an entire loop for it to count. It is a trail race with the majority of climbing done in mile 2 which most people (myself included) power hiked.

It started raining about 5:00 am in the morning and continued pouring throughout the day. As a matter of fact, it was still raining when I got up at 6:00 am this morning). I met a friend who ran it with me at 7:30 am and we drove to the race getting there at 8:00 am. Packet pick-up was super easy. No lines. We got our bib and a really nice hoodie and retreated to our car to get out of the cold rain. The temp stayed around 43-46F during the entire day.

After brief overview of the course, the RD fired a gun and we were off. The first half mile is flat and circles a small lake. Then you start up the side of the mountain. At the top of the mountain, the Boy Scouts had an aid station set up but I never did stop at it. Once you climb the mountain you run through an open field for about ½ mile before descending on a trail down to the Clinch River. You run alongside the river on a grassy path for the rest of the race. We completed our first loop in 1:01:53, grabbed some water and headed back out. (There were bacon and pancakes available also.)

We only slowed a bit on the second loop finishing it in 1:05:34. After this loop we stopped for a bathroom visit and PB&J sandwich before setting out for loop number three. There was also lasagna, soup and other food available but I’ve yet to figure out how to eat food like this and immediately take off for a run. It was still pouring rain and the trails were little rivers in places. The descent down them was getting very slippery. My feet were soaked from the beginning but I credit my Darn Tough socks with preventing any blisters from forming. My hands were cold most of the day though. At times I could actually squeeze the water from them! We completed loop number three in 1:08:36 and immediately headed out for loop number 4.

The rain continued and as more people passed over the trails they became more muddy and more slippery. We decided this loop would be our last one. My friend broke her shoulder in August and had to have a metal plate and 7 pins attach the arm to the shoulder so she’s still recovering from that and the last thing she needed would be to fall and do more damage to it. And, we were both done with the cold rain and mush. We finished loop number 4 in 1:11:37 with a total of 20 miles.

Even though this was not an ultra distance, I did not train for an ultra or with the mindset of going an ultra distance. The most I have run since July was 12 miles and I think stopping at 20 mile was a wise decision. We had 1:16 left on the clock for our 6-hour event but with our times dropping with each loop and with being tired we would have had to hustle to finish the loop by the cut-off time and honestly I think I left my hustle at the top of the mountain on that last climb!

The race director gave us a finisher’s medal anyway because he said we deserved it for running in the conditions that we had. I have to admit that I did not feel one iota of guilt in taking it!

Wow @Teresa502! Congratulations on completing 20 miles of that race! 40s and raining is miserable weather and you definitely deserve the medal for that.

I didn't set a numeric goal for November, and I haven't done the maths, but I estimate a total of around 120km, I finished my HM under my conservative target time, remained uninjured and so far (fingers crossed) have recovered well and maintained my fitness level, so I'm calling the month a success!

Thanks everyone. I just learned they ended up canceling the race at 19.5 hours after water got waist deep on the part by the river and trees were falling. I had a friend going for 100 miles. He made it 80 before they shut it down.

Congratulations to everyone who hit their November goal! I did not...but I'm starting off December on the right foot! 12.4 miles today! It took me 160 minutes. I'm not a speed demon but it was a steady run for me. Good luck to all of us!

I haven't posted since before Thanksgiving. Just too much going on getting ready for the holiday. I have gone through and caught up on the posts. There were some great races going on and lots of folks hitting their goals!

We had torrential rain on Thanksgiving with flash flood warnings and advisories all day so no run for me. I had planned to wrap up the month and hit my goal since I wouldn't be able to run on Friday or Saturday. I did walk/run around 6 miles on both of those days at the agility trial so I consider my month a good one despite not officially hitting 100 miles. A picture from our successful trial days below the cut. We had 3 out of four good runs on Friday and 4 out of 4 on Saturday. Hobbes got 1st place in 2 events for his height and level and a new agility title. This was his first trial since May and the latest surgeries, so I was really pleased with how well he ran! Also it was very cold both days, you can't tell but he was shivering when I took the picture despite having his coat on.
