Less Alcohol - JANUARY 2020- One Day at a Time

@MissMay - I also can't believe that there were no comments or support for that. It makes sense that it could even go right along with all those fitness and wt loss goals people post.
I made it through my first "night out" - we often go to happy hour with friends on Friday. I enjoy trying new beers, but the diet soda and then water was fine and it didn't really bother me.
Anyone have good subs for when they are out? I don't like to drink a lot of soda and plain water doesn't always cut it.5 -
Why are Friday nights between 5-7pm so hard to resist fixing a drink, opening a bottle of wine or heading out with friends for happy hour? DH and I were challenged last night until 7pm by wanting to have a glass of wine and relax after the week. We no longer keep wine in the house and when we want it then head to the store for 1 bottle only. I told him at 5pm when he was wandering around trying to figure out something to do besides drink we could get a bottle since it was Friday night. But he said no ... let's keep up our AF count. Finished my bookclub book instead!
Running tally: 3 AF days out of 3 days. 4 AF days for the week ... so far!10 -

@Lilylady3k by any chance does your husband have any single brothers with the same mind set? 🤣LOL
Great for the two of you, looking out for each other. 💜
@wine_n_weights I know I am defiantly on the minority list when it comes to folks in my area and drinking less. Congrats on getting through HH. I know that feeling. A few of my go to mock tails are Virgin Mary, mock mint Julep( made with sweet iced tea and ginger ale with mint leaf) lemon aide with an orange slice garnish in a stemmed glass. Fancy stem ware is mood setting for me.
@LoveyChar chalking up days for a dry January. Woo hoo

Welcome....ONE DAY AT A TIME is our mantra here. 😊5 -
As usual, I am going to try for 16-20 AF days for the month.
I just made it to 16 for December.
January 01 - 3 drinks
January 02 - 3 drinks
January 03 - AF
January 04 - AF - Had to delay and delay and delay today, really wanted to have drinks...but I didn't.
Running tally: 2AF days out of 4 days so far.7 -
@looneycatblue
Fry's cocoa - 1 tblsp
Stevia - 1 packet
Peppermint extract - a splash
Candy Cane.
Stir it up.
20 calories total.
I actually prefer peppermint schnapps, but am attempting to drink less alcohol : - )6 -
Lilylady3k wrote: »I'm in! The nightly bottle of wine with DH needs to come to an end. At least there are not 2 bottles of wine these days but I noticed recently that a rum/bourbon & diet coke have slipped into the routine before the wine opens in the last two weeks. No more. Just because others around me drink ... does not mean that I need to as well. I do not need to feel guilty and supportive trying to drink a few glasses to keep DH from drinking the whole bottle by himself. That helps no one. Especially me as the lbs start creeping back on when I gave up tracking my AF nights each month this past year in July.
AF last night on New Year's Eve!
My personal goal for 2020 is to drink less alcohol. Targeting 3 nights per week AF usually M-Th ~12 AF nights per month.
That's my goal also.7 -
Day 5 and I'm back home. 2 weeks away for Christmas/new year has involved drinking daily. Not always huge amounts but no AF days. The aim is to have an AF streak until my next trip abroad towards the end of the month.
Problem is we acquired several bottles of wine and a £30 beer voucher for Christmas, then bought more beer when we were in Belgium to bring home with us. I do like Belgian beer - I drink it more like wine because it's so strong, but the bottles are smaller so there's less incentive to have another glass to finish the bottle.7 -
This is the first time I've gotten DH to commit. His parents were alcoholics. I think he is determined to break his nightly drinking trend ... when he starts with one it is hard for him to stop at night.
This is helping me! I'm not being influenced by the opening of the bottle to have 1 or 2 glasses when I can take it or leave it. I'm more of a social drinker and enjoy not being a daily drinker.
Running tally: 4 AF days out of 4 days. 5 AF days for the week ... so far! He has 4 AF days straight since I let him drink alone on NYE.9 -
@Lilylady3k Good for you both...daily habit is what I do not care for..I read in UK instead of recommend #of ounces per day as limit based on gender..they push for at least a couple of consecutive days in a row AF for all..I think that makes more sense7
-
@wine_n_weights I notice a lack of decent AF choices when out..most just tasted like fruit juice..nothing complex and I don't care for sweet..some high end places may have AF Seedlip..it comes in several flavors..on Amazon I love the spice flavor with a slice of pink grapefruit.. I also have brought a small bottle of AF drinking shrubs in my purse and spiked the plain tonic &lime with that. I liked Calvits lemongrass shrub.6

WELCOME BACK TERRI! 😊😊😊😊4 -
End of a short week today.
Before January of 2018 I struggled beyond belief with wanting to DRINK LESS. It was a back and forth battle with myself. So many emotions and worries:
°How would I have fun?
°Would I still have friends?
°How would I cope with stressful situations?
°Is it too late to get my health back?
°What would others think or say about my choice?
The above questions for me were all answered with positive results.
Not kidding myself that I would never have another drop was my biggest break thru.
Limits set, not total restriction.
Quality, not quanity.

Stats so far:
Jan 1- 6
Jan 2- 0
Jan 3- 4 - intentionally drank to calm a nervous stomach and insomnia (expected from detoxing)
Jan 4- 2.5- mindful of drinking less but just enough so I could get to sleep
I'd like to finish out the first 7 day stretch getting to 2.5 or less a day (a 50% reduction from Dec avg), then log some more 0 days week after I get over the initial transition phase. I've done this before and know the initial physical side effects are temporary but worth it. I remember that feeling of awesomeness that comes with hitting 3 AF days in a row, and want that back!8 -
The cocoa recipe sounds good👍 6:42 am in Vegas another 24 💖 hope everyone has a wonderful day!7

@cavatinne - I prefer something not so sweet as well. Thanks for the suggestions!3

Is Fry's cocoa, just unsweetened cocoa powder? Do you add about 6-8 oz of hot water to this? I need to try this!1 -
Jan 1 - 3, 3 days in a row AF, feeling good, lots more energy.
Jan 4, caved in and don't even know why, big failure for my dry Jan goal...
Jan 5, dust myself off, getting back on the "dry" horse.10 -
Hi all I’m still around. The holidays were crazy and hectic and fun and I took a much needed break from work. I also took a break from tracking food, exercising, and drinking less. Whoops. But although I’ve been drinking daily and sometimes more than a couple drinks - I haven’t had any crazy over indulgences, no hangovers, etc. I’m not sure that’s a totally positive thing as those are good motivators for why I need to focus on “less” or “less often”.
But as I’m back to work tomorrow, hoping also to get back into some sort of a routine where I can establish exercise as a priority, eating in a deficit to shed the 10 lb weight creep I’ve had for the last several months, and as part of all that the mindful moderation and a few days per week AF will hopefully become standard practice again as well.
Happy New Year and New Decade!
Cheers to all on achieving your goals and be kind to yourself when things don’t go according to your plans! It happens!10 -
Goal :: limit to 4 days in January
January 01 - drank quite a bit on 1 Jan - wine and beer.
January 02 - AF
January 03 - AF :: Fridays are challenging. Proud to skip. Compensated with overeating. Need to find better alternatives. Fridays are most tempting days for me to drink.
January 04 - AF :: Saturdays are easier than Fridays8 -

Hi : - )
Yes, either boiling water or unsweetened Almond Milk (30 calories per cup). I used boiling water on NYE because I was making them for a bunch of people.
Candy Cane is just for garnish of course, a good way to use up those Christmas Candy Canes. I think that a cinnamon stick would be a lovely garnish. I have seen such things as chocolate spoons that you can stir with and suck on. I am watching my calories and don't like to blow them on beverages though. An orange slice might be a nice garnish spiked around a cherry.
I am on the hunt for some other flavoured extracts. I used to see them in all of the stores, but so far haven't found any! I want to get: Orange, Brandy, Rum. I have vanilla, peppermint, and almond. Maybe I will try it with the Almond today.

Oh my, we have lots of suggestions for AF drinks.
Like @MissMay said, the fancy glassware makes it special.
It depends if you are at home or out.
Bartenders make their money on quickly made drinks, not fancy ones, so unless you go up to the bar, tip really well, and get the bartender to make you something special. Then it would be nice if the bartender called the drink after your name, so when sitting at your table and ordering you can just ask for it...if it is the same bartender of course.
Home drinks we have so many ideas for on here. Stay tuned : - )4 -
I’ve been lurking but resisting and suffering for it. I want to be able to drink because well yummmm. But I have to reign it all in again. Too many mornings struggling to remember what did and didn’t go on the night before. Spending too much money on liquor and wine. Spending too much time wasting too much time. I’m not ready to make a commitment to being AF, or even when I am or am not going to have a drink, or how many I’ll allow myself when I do. Right now, I’m thinking this day I will be AF. We’ll see what tomorrow brings.
Best of luck to everyone in reaching their goals and taking good care of ourselves. We all deserve it.15 -
Joining a bit late this month. Holidays were chaotic and not all that enjoyable for me this year. I feel recovered now and am ready to recommit.
Loved reading through all the posts. Thank you to everyone who posted. It helps me so much to read through them and post here for accountability. Some days I feel overwhelmed and don’t post anything, but I try to read all the posts I’ve missed.
Goal this month of 16 AF days.11 -

@dawnbgethealthy I had a virgin mango margarita the other night. Sugar rim, garnished with a lime, in a big margarita glass. Everyone was going past me commenting on how delicious it looked. OHhhhhh it is I said.

Goodness we have everyone coming out of the woodwork. How fantastic @WinoGelato , @anglilacs , @karenesg to have all of you still hanging with us and reading our daily observations.
Also big welcome to @nanishora, plenty of support here.
@helen_goldthorpe 👍 on the first AF this year.8
