Great running @Avidkeo and you gave me a boost to push forward as I was wavering a little.
Awwww you totally got this!0 -
Another 5K this morning putting me at 35/80km. I am almost halfway to my monthly goal and it’s only the first week. I think I’m going to adjust my monthly goal. I’ll see how my second week goes.
Question, how do you all transition from running 5 k to running 10k. I was thinking this morning as I finished my run that I could probably go further. Not sure I could actually finish a 10k but then again I’ve never tried.

If you’re familiar with the c25k app, there’s a companion app called bridge to 10k for doing just that. Or you can just gradually increase your longest run until you’re doing 10k. Speaking for myself, once I was doing 5k regularly I was ready to do 10k without much difficulty - once your body gets the hang of running that’s not a big jump.4 -
May goal: 55 km
22.2/ 55 km completed. Almost at the halfway mark.5 -

Or look for a training plan - there are a few that you can find by googling "beginner 10km plan". I'm a big fan of Hal Higdon's plans - here's one that builds up from 5km to 10km.
What you should not do is what I did for my first 10km that was about 6 years ago, after I had been running around 5km three times per week and a colleague challenged me if I could do 10km in under 90 minutes. I went out the next weekend and tried, with 3min run - 1min walk alternating. I was dying by the end of it, but I managed it in 87min43s. The week after I tried again, and managed to do the same 3min run - 1min walk for 81min27s - and then I had to stopp short at 9.6km , because my shins where hurting too much. *After that* is when I dropped to the more reasonable approach of resting a week, then doing 6.5km, 8km, and back to 10km a week later. Without pain that time.
Which shows that you can push yourself further than expected if you really want to, but also that it's a much better idea to increase your distance gradually.

Love your run report @Avidkeo ! It's awesome that you didn't even feel it at the halfway point! You are doing great. I too am jealous of your view as you run!4

After about an inch of snow last night, today was cloudy, low 30s F with a north wind. Not what I expected for a May run. Just slogged along and never looked at my watch until the end.
@Avidkeo I love that you were smiling the same smile in your "before and after" pictures. My "after" smile is more like a grimace.
@PastorVincent I think your new summer running shirt can stay in the shipping bag today - unless you want to try it as a base layer.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2020 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs
Run at least 4 5k races
Get a 5k PR
Average at least 138k per month, to meet my Run the Year pledge of 1,020 miles
Stretch goal: If I can average 169k per month, I can run 2020K in 2020

6-20 Freedom Run 5k, Aurora, OH
9-19 Race for the Parks 5k, Hudson, OH6 -
I haven't really been feeling motivated these past couple weeks so I'm really thankful I'm part of a Runbet to kinda force me to stay accountable. That, and the comfort of knowing I should hopefully have an easier labor if I stay active.
It is getting way harder, though. I think next month I'm going to drop my goal from 50 miles to maybe 30 or 40. I am going to keep running but I may shorten them up to 2 miles just to be able to maintain some distance so that its not as hard to build it back up postpartum.10 -

It is snowing again. The wind is in the teens and the temp is below freezing... definitely a good day for my new shirt to arrive I will have to try it out! 🤦♂️🤦♂️ I mean does that weather not just scream for HEAT GEAR SLEEVELESS SINGLET?😂

@Avidkeo great long run!!
@rheddmobile your post just makes me sad, though it’s so true.
@hanlonsk strava did the same thing to me
On the gun issue, I personally own a gun, I will protect my family to the death if necessary and I also stand up for everyone’s right to have one. That’s being said I believe there should be limits on what I can own and background checks before allowing me to own one along with training in gun safety and how to use one. My family has and still owns gun shops and ranges. In the state I live I can carry my gun on me with a concealed permit, I have such a permit, but let me say I don’t carry it. I don’t grasp the idea of citizen’s arrest and call a big *kitten* on them saying that was what they were doing. When I moved to the South I was actually surprised the racism here (at least where I am) was less than in the North, however, like everywhere else there are people who are completely out of touch with reality and then you add to it ex cop and continuing to work with law enforcement and I’m sure they truly believed there was nothing wrong with what they did. THAT scares the *kitten* out of me and it should everyone. I really don’t want to get all political here, it’s my view and I completely respect those with a different one.
Slowly raising Champ’s running mileage, today he did 3 miles with me. He did do a lot of stopping to sniff and lots of looking back at me like come on old woman run!!! Ha ha

Retro Run – virtual - done
Rona on the Run - Virtual for St. Jude benefit – done

It makes it hard when you are trying to hit something like 2.23, my Garmin turns to 2.23 and I took 3 more steps and stopped, still rounded down but I didn't want my Garmin to change to 2.24. I never ever stop when my Garmin hits X.0 because that dang strava will go to x.99 ha ha3 -

That is essentially what I did, only I think it was 5-10 steps, I figured I was pushing my luck towards the 2.24. I have had several 2.01 mile runs the last several weeks according to garmin. Because it tells me I hit 2miles and I go a little bit further to be sure. But yeah... normally don’t mind the mismatch, but it annoyed me, yesterday.

@PastorVincent - I feel you, we got snow too. I went for a hike this morning and it was suddenly January again. It was a gorgeous hike though and the cold and snow kept the crowds away. I'm not sure how heavily used this trail is on a nice day but everything seems to be now. And the small parking area was full when I left.
Stella sadly did not get to go on the hike, so I had to walk her when I got back home. While we were out I decided I might not want to go back out again (it was snowing again, and cold and windy) so I started to run. We at least got a minimal run in, in case I don't have it in me to run later. And that is looking doubtful.
I am conflicted about doing a longer run tomorrow. I may just consider this a recovery week and just get a short run in.3 -
Woke up this morning to the news that my uncle had just died. I can't begin to tell you the emotions that went through me. He is my dad's youngest brother, one of 10 siblings (my dad is the oldest son). He had just had a birthday last week - he was 62.
I went for my long run and thought of him and the last I had seen him in person; which was a very long time ago but nevertheless. During the run I stopped I think 5 times to take calls from relatives and friends. I didn't care that my run was interrupted, and it was actually a good thing. The wind was 15mph gusts at times and that wasn't pleasant. So the breaks were welcome.
I completed almost 10.5 and headed home. During the run I found out that he had had a fatal heart attack.
Although I'm so very sad and shocked, I am not surprised at the cause - heart disease runs in my family (I have had triple bypass when I was 32), and many in my immediate and dad's family as well. Yesterday I ran for Ahmaud.
Today I ran for my uncle.14 -

If you are trying to hit X.00 there is a trick with the Garmins. Do not stop running when the display turns to.00 but wait for the vibration that signals the mile to stop. It seems that the vibration actually happens at .00 where the display shows the rounded up value.
For 2.23 you could do the same thing by creating a work out where you run 2.23 miles. Run the workout until the watch tells you to stop, not when the display says stop.

@hamsterwheel6 - My thoughts are with you and your family! He was so young!
@skippygirlsmom - I too was raised with guns. My dad was an avid hunter and we all had to be trained; how to take them apart, clean and put them back together again and of course how to shoot. I still love to go target shooting, nowadays at an indoor range and I am still much to my surprise a very good shot. My trainer was also a competitive shooter and I have gone to the range quite a few times with him. I find the vigilante/gun mindset very frightening especially when they are walking around with automatic weapons that are designed for the military or police.
@katharmonic - love the picture of the snow! I am sure you all are over and done with it but as it has been so hot here already the snow looks wonderful!
Strava doesn't show the hundredths on my watch so I let it hit 2.2 and then went a bit further and ended up with 2.27! Not near the 2.23 that I wanted but it is as close as I could get it.
I got out for a run while it was still cool and cloudy this morning and it should have been great but ended up being kind of a mess. I was not feeling great, I couldn't find the right workout on my phone, Hobbes got stung or bit by some bug in his mouth, my headphones died and... I had another bathroom emergency. So after getting to the bathroom we ended up just walking the last mile home.
We saw lots of squirrels, birds, butterflies and there were fuzzy caterpillars everywhere crossing the dirt path. I had to keep dodging them, like the path was crowded with people, so I didn't squish any.8
