@skippygirlsmom Haha about Champ wanting you to go faster. Sounds like he is going to be a good running companion. I think you can work with him to get him to stop stopping until you let him. Maybe give him the warm up to sniff and then, once you start running just keep going. He'll soon get the idea that he has to keep up. Just a thought. My Tippy doesn't run with me, but when I'm walking and don't want her to stop and she has other ideas, I'll tell her, "Not Stopping." Nine times out of ten that is all it takes and she comes on. That 10th time she is really going potty. For that, I'll stop.
@hamsterwheel6 So sorry for your loss. I'll keep you and your family in my prayers.
@katharmonic Love the snow picture. Great day for a hike. Not so much for a run.0 -

Today's plan called for 6 miles at an easy pace. I signed up for the Commitment Un-Cancelled 10K, so just went a little further. I kept it at an easy pace. Not trying for any records, unless it was the slowest 10K. It was a near perfect day to run outside for many of you - 50°F, sunny, light wind. But, I was so not in the mood to run at all and was not feeling the cool weather. I was able to talk myself into a treadmill run. I know. I'm weird.
I ran at a 4.5 mph pace, which kept my HR about where I wanted it to be and felt easy. I did take a walk break after each 14 minutes I ran to get a little water and eat a gummy bear. I'm trying to figure out hydration and nutrition for longer runs. It was intentionally slow - 1:23:41 minutes. I also walked a mile.

Well i got up this morning expecting to be stiff and sore, but nope, nothing. Can barely even tell that I did such a long run yesterday, no aches pains or niggles! Woo hoo. Frankly I'm somewhat relieved lol as it means training is going well right?
So went for a gentle walk around our block - about 6k, then did some strength training, stretching, then some rolling. Again, surprisingly, no real sore spots!
I was looking at my plan last night and realised I actually have a 26k run this coming weekend, not the cut back week I thought it was! I know I'll be able to do it, so am excited again.
Amazing how fast you can go from "I'd never be able to do that" to "I can absolutely do that".11 -
Beautiful morning out there today! Got 5 miles in! Brings me to 7 miles out of 40.
Have a great weekend!!7 -

@quilteryoyo we taught Macy the difference between her walking leash and keep one leash for running she knew short leash we are running. The problem with Champ is two things he’s not neutered so a lot of the stopping is marking and he’s never been on a leash before. He’s getting the idea if I say let’s go Champ he will keep moving. I do usually stroll around the bottom of the street when we first go out. The downfall to a neighborhood with mailboxes at the curb is everyone has been marked by dogs lol.

Possible but unless he grabbed it while we were running I don't think so. It looked more like something flew into his mouth and then bit his tongue and he couldn't get it off. I stopped running just about the time he was able to spit it out but I didn't actually see what it was so who knows. He is fine so I am sure it wasn't a bee as he is very allergic to bees.5 -
0510-10.3k, total-29.3k goal-100k
Summer really is here. I'll have to remember to bring water for anything longer than 10km from now on.
Not much to report (seems we're getting into a theme here). Lots of people in the park, especially with their kids. All kinds of runners both fast and slow. Saw a woman walking four Corgis. Much power to her.
Oh and my scale finally is dead. It's been cranky since forever and this morning it gave up the ghost for good. Wonder if I should get a new one or just eat by feel for a few months and see what happens? Seems like a pretty good recipe for disaster.3 -
I’m so sorry for your loss @hamsterwheel6.
The first I heard of Ahmaud Arbery was @katharmonic’s post but it was after my run on Friday. It finally made it to the UK press yesterday (Saturday). Anyway, I added 2.23 miles on to my 4 today in his honour. As Scott said, sometimes we have to remind ourselves of the good in most people. I hope this movement brings his family some small degree of comfort.
Hope those with snow get some sun soon. I was out in shorts this morning for the first time this year but there is a strong breeze building up now. Maybe not quite the sunbathing weather of yesterday!
May goal: 60 miles
May total: 24.23 miles
1/5: Strength training
2/5: 4.2 miles
3/5: Strength training
4/5: 4 miles
5/5: Strength training
6/5: 5 miles
7/5: Strength training
8/5: 4.8 miles
9/5: Strength training, zoom yoga class
10/5: 6.23 miles5 -
Another 5K this morning putting me at 40/80km. I’m changing my goal today to 100K for the month. I think an extra 20 sounds reasonable considering how well I did the first week.
Thank you so much to @rheddmobile and @_nikkiwolf_ for your advice and suggestions! Thanks for taking the time to answer my question.
I am familiar with C25K. It’s what I used to get me running my current 5k’s. I completed the program 3 times until I was successfully running my 5k’s with a steady pace and controlled breathing. I have considered starting a new program similar to C25K but was hoping to just gradually move myself up to the 10K. I think I will try to do so by adding 1 k a week gradually taking breaks now and again. I won’t do this this month, I will make it a future goal. Thanks so much to the two of you!

Lovely run this morning, went out for 7 miles and it was so nice I went for 10. A shame I didn't have water and gels as I think there was more there. As a bonus going out at 6:30 I saw 4 cyclists, 4 dog walkers and one fellow runner in 7 miles on the trail, lately there has been that many every 1/2 mile.8
-
Went out for a test run and ended up walking, knee feels like it wants another couple of days. I did do 2.23 for Ahmaud, took a screenshot of the mileage, then went on to do four something in total.
It’s not snowing here like it is for some of y’all but it was 40 degrees instead of 80 something, a big drop in a short time.

Unfortunately neutering will not stop marking... apparently marking is a learned behavior, not an instinctive one due to hormones. Even my spayed female lifts her leg against a tree on occasion.
I've got a neutered male dog who marks EVERYTHING (thankfully only OUTSIDE) but he's such a pain in the *kitten* to take running because he's constantly trying to stop and I'm constantly trying to drag him along. My pace would be so much faster if it wasn't for dealing with his shenanigans. *Sigh* He's lucky he's cute.
If anyone figures out how to train the behavior out of them while running, please send some pointers my way... He's 7 and this has been an issue running with him for the last 5 years or so and I don't see it stopping any time soon.
I can give him a light butt tap, yell, "No!" or "Leave it!" or "Move it!" or basically anything and He. Does. Not. Care.3 -

My husband finally decided to go out on a run with me. He has not run in the eight years since he got out of the military. We did a run/walk for around 20 minutes, and then he walked with me for a total of almost four miles. I thought it would maybe be a one and done, but then last night he asked if we would be doing it again today. THEN he said he would do a 5K race with me. Part of me wonders if I dreamed it! 🤣 I am going to download C25K on his phone today so he can actually work up to it.11
-
@skippygirlsmom Yep. Gotta leave that pee mail behind for the other dogs. You are doing great for Champ and he is going to be so much better off living with you guys. I didn't realize until I got Tippy that female dogs will also mark their territory. She stops and pees on so many things when we go back into the field. It's pretty funny.
@shanaber I'm glad Hobbes is okay.
@TheMrWobbly Sounds like a near perfect run.
@rheddmobile Sorry the knee is still giving you trouble. Hope a couple more days of rest is all that is required.
@marisap2010 Yeah that your husband has decided to run with you! I hope it lasts.
@brittanystebbins95 I have a dog behaviorist who helped me when Tippy was younger. My suggestion would be to start by walking with your dog on a short lease and make him stay by your side with no stopping, until you are ready to let him stop and sniff. Start with short distances and gradually work your way up to longer ones. Then, use a short lease on your runs, as @skippygirlsmom says she does.
Does anyone know what happened to @Camaramandy648 ?5 -

@brittanystebbins95 - I echo what @quilteryoyo suggested with one caveat. He needs motivation to not stop and sniff/mark so I would take some cheese or other high value treats along then give him a command to stay with you, whatever you want to use or have been using and when he does for a bit (maybe past a tree he would normally stop at) pop him say the command and pop him a treat. One thing to consider is if you want to train this behavior when you are walking or just running. For the most part Hobbes knows now when we are running not to stop and to stay right with me and that when we are walking he can sniff a bit and pee/mark things. I do walk the first 0.5 mile or so and let him do his thing so that once I start running he doesn't have much interest in sniffing and marking any longer. I do not use a short leash though, I have a waist (hands free) leash so I don't have to hold it. If he is being a goof and not staying with me I can still easily rein him in.2
-
@quilteryoyo @shanaber
Thank you for the tips! I will certainly try them. As much as I love him, behavior/stubbornness wise, he is the worst dog I have ever owned. I've trained so many dogs, and he is the only one that has given me a run for my money. He is so bullheaded and when we get outside, there isn't a single reward that can interest him. Food, toys, it does not matter. I no longer exist and he just wants to smell/pee on/bark at the things.2 -
@hamsterwheel6 so sorry for your loss.0

This is for sure - my Stella marks all the time as well. I have the same problem @brittanystebbins95. She does not care either and puts the brakes on all the time and there is no budging her. I have a waist leash like @shanaber but she seems to hate that even more than a regular leash. Agreed on the at least she's cute resignation
@quilteryoyo, you're right we haven't heard from @Camaramandy648 in a while. I hope all is well.
@marisap2010 woo hoo - hope your husband keeps up the running!

A modest long run for today. The sun was out this morning and it was chilly but pretty nice. I ran along the canal trail, but started at a location a little further out than I usually go to mix things up a bit. Today's animal sightings included a turtle, beaver, geese, big black snake in the water, lots of birds, a dead catfish and a horse! The horse was a surprise, as I've never seen anyone ride along the trail before. The woman riding her said the horse was pretty new to all of this and they were getting her some experience being ridden and among people, etc. It was a gorgeous horse and seemed to be doing a very good job.
Wishing all the mothers a happy mother's day, including the dog moms among us. And cats too5 -
@katharmonic Dog mom checking in. And my little guy kept waking me up after 3:30 AM today because he was nervous about something, so I feel like I had a glimpse into human mom life (at least the sleep deprivation part).

Hi. I’m new, I just started running again 20 days ago. I’m not running outside just yet and refuse till I’m in much better shape, hopefully in 2-3 months. So far still in the stage of me working my way up from walking to running by doing intervals run:walk. I’m taking it really slow and watching my heart rate. I do roll my ankle very easily which is one of the reason I’m waiting till I’m further along in training to run my neighborhood. I have to be very aware of my feet/step. On the days in between I’m trying to walk the neighborhood(lots of hills) and I hope to motivate myself to do some supportive strength training.
I’m trying to run 4 days a week, 3-3.5 miles on my treadmill(Nordic track commercial 1750). My goal is 50 miles this month.12 -
@robynmac5819 Welcome! I began running with the run/walk interval method, I'm a huge fan of it.2
