It's time for the MAY 2020 Running Challenge!
WARNING: Following this thread may be addictive; it gets very talkative...miss a day and you can be 50 posts behind. This is the most popular challenge on MFP. If you found us in the middle (or end) of the month, you're still very welcome to join in - no requirements or special invite needed. Once you post, that's it you're in. And yes, we do this every month.
You set your own pace and distance for the month. We will all be doing it together. This is your virtual running group to help keep you accountable, to enjoy a virtual post-run coffee with your fellow runners, and to make new friends and learn a few things.
This is a continuation from the April 2020 Running Challenge which can be found at:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10790128/april-2020-monthly-running-challenge/p1
Anyone can join in, new and old, and if you found this thread late, you can join in at any time.
We have members ranging from total beginners all the way to Boston Qualifiers and beyond. We are a friendly and encouraging bunch. You never need to be ashamed of your miles. If you are making the effort, you will find only support here.
Here are the details from last month that apply again:
Anybody want to join in for a running challenge? Set a goal here and update us every day. OPTIONAL: You can post your progress by creating a ticker at http://www.tickerfactory.com (if creating one seems difficult, or you're like me and can't be bothered, then just type in your daily miles in this thread).
You can run, walk, or do treadmill - just be consistent. Don't let the high (or low) goals of others intimidate you. Some do 25 miles, others do 50, some go higher than that, some do lower; it's entirely your goal and therefore completely up to you. We help motivate each other, so what do you say? If you're new to running, set a low goal. If you're from a part of the world where miles aren't your thing, log your distances in KMs. And if you'd rather log your progress by time rather than distance, then you're entirely free to do that as well.
Feel free to set your goal now but wait until May 1, 2020 to start logging your runs!
Also, don't forget to join our group which can be found at:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/group/21182-monthly-running-challenges
Bookmark the previous and past challenges:https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10393468/current-past-challenges#latest
Find a small group of runners that encourage and offer food support:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10573619/runners-that-need-some-nutritional-accountability#latest
There you will find lots of good info, and it's a place where everyone can talk to each other for further motivation. It's also a place to find help when there is a problem with this thread.
Note: we also have a group on Strava and Facebook.
After you run, come into this thread and post what you did (don't forget to hit the star in the upper right corner to bookmark this thread). Simply keep a running tally of what you've done this month, and interact with the others. Many folks come in here and chit-chat it up, even on their rest days or while recouping from injury. This is a very social group and we talk about many things (sometimes even about running ). It's a very friendly bunch here so don't be afraid to say hi (even if this is your first time), talk about a recent or up-coming race, ask questions, provide answers, or just lurk-n-learn. Participation is what makes this group successful.
Not quite sure how to log your runs? Follow the examples of many other challenge members. Even take a peek at last month's thread (posted above).
*******OPTIONAL TICKER*************
Info on tickers since I know there will be questions. Sign up for an account at http://www.tickerfactory.com and create your ticker. Then you need to update it after you finish a run and post it here. Here is what you will need to do.
After setting up your ticker, you will need to make note of the weblink they give you so you can return. An example would be:
http://www.tickerfactory.com/exercise/w6K1EiX/ <<<< the last part will be a part of the image link (explained below) that will be supplied to you after you initially create your link.
When you return to TickerFactory with the weblink, go to your settings page. Make sure you type your PIN in that you set when you created your ticker account. Then, where it says "Your current cumulative value", there is an add button. Simply add the distance that you just did, and the cumulative value automatically changes. Then hit next.
After adding your new miles (or KMs) to your ticker, you need to post it here.
After you hit next, it will give you a bunch of codes suggesting how to display your ticker.
Use the one at the bottom where it says Direct Image URL:
It will look something like:
http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png
To display that correctly in your post, make sure you place the image (img) tags around that link. So it will look something like the following (but removing the spaces in the img tags):
[ img ] http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png [ /img ]
^^^^^^^ Don't forget to remove the spaces between the brackets ^^^^^^^^^^
Some key things to pay attention to when posting your ticker:
Use the link that ends in .png
Remember the [ img] and [ /img] tags go in between the link
Remove the spaces in the img tags before posting
YES, there is a / in the second /img tag
By the way, everyone here should consider themselves a runner no matter how fast or slow. There's no judgment, we all started somewhere. And no comparisons, except with your former self. Don't compare your Chapter 1 to somebody elses Chapter 20.

Oh yeah should probably state my goal... Um BRB
So according to Hal, I'm going to be running 231.5km this month. Woah. Note, this works out a LOT more because of the way the dates fall as well as my long runs getting LONG with a 29k run at the end of the month.
I just checked on the status of the HM, they will be making a decision during May if the cancel or postpone it. I suspect postpone as its their 35th year, and it's right on the cusp of when lock down will be pretty much lifted. Either way will know more by the end of the month.7 -
Thanks @avidkeo!
May goal: 138.9 miles
In April I worked on the marathon a week challenge, which I exceeded (so far 121.6 miles with 2 more days left) but found it definitely a step up in my mileage over what I've done for many months. For May I'll try for a more ambitious challenge which is to complete the total of 5K + 10K + 15K + Half Marathon + Full Marathon + an Ultra 50K + Ultra 50 mile (138.9 miles total). I'm not signing up for the swag for this virtual challenge but will work on checking off these distances over the course of the month. We'll see how this goes! I don't necessarily intend to run the distances beyond 10k or 15k as one run necessarily, I'm just going for total miles broken up however works. Maaaaaaybe I'll try for a HM distance? No promises.6 -
My goal is to try and follow my coach's instructions... for a change11

Thanks for setting this up Kim. You need to watch that mileage increase - it’s a bit more than the recommended 10 percent. I know you’re pretty good at listening to your body, but this is a kindly reminder to remember you’re in this for the long game - getting to the start line is a challenge in itself!
I’m in for about 200km, depending on what coach says.7 -

Yeah when I added it up, was kinda like oh geez, but will follow the plan, see how it goes, and take breaks if needed. Will see how it goes.3 -
Hi all! I hoping to join in for May (and beyond) I was active in the group back in 2017-2018 and am excited to see familiar names. The group really got me consistent with my running and I am hoping it will work again. I am 5 months postpartum and although I have been running I want to start getting my miles back up. I am going to start with a goal of 50 miles for the month of May.12

Welcome!2 -
i hope to do 60 miles this month. the parks are back open. my race is still not cancelled so i'll be attempting my first 50k. it's going to be a stretch. but a dnf is part of ultra life right?7
-
I'm gonna join again for the third month
I did 40, then 50, and part of me wants to push for 60, but I think I'm just gonna keep the bar set at 50.
This is my first pregnancy and I don't entirely know how my body is going to react to it yet as I get farther along (currently 6 months), so I don't want to set myself up for failure. But I do want to stay active.8 -
Hi everyone! I haven't joined in the running challenge for at least half a year, I think. I was away from MFP for a bit, but now I'm back :-) Yesterday I finally finished the first longer-than-10km run of 2020, and I want to celebrate that by joining the May challenge!
My goal will be 100km (with the secret hope of making it to 120km - we will see...)

Hi! looks like for April I will finish at about 124 ish running miles if I get in my 5 miles tomorrow.
That and about 12.5 intentional walking miles. So yay, I met goat!
For May, the same 100 - stretch of 125.
Thanks @Avidkeo6 -

He who must be obeyed. Unless I'm physically breaking down. Then rest breaks are necessary.1 -
Well I hit my goal for April - I don't remember what it was, but I think I went way over it. I'm in for 140 for May!5
-
My May goal is less than half of my April goal because I will also be using an indoor cycle and strength training in addition. May running miles goal is 60.7
-
Thanks for setting this up @Avidkeo! Looks like I am going to exceed my goal of 75 miles for April. So, I am going to set my goal at 80 miles for May. If I'm still not working, that should be doable.4

Hi Everyone,
I haven't been here for months and have done practically no running since last November and really miss it. So I got myself out this morning to test the water and see if I can still run. Managed 2 miles. I'd got a spin bike for the winter so think that helped. I'm going to aim for 30miles for May cos I'd still like to keep up the cycling. Hope everyone is well. This Corona virus is surreal. We aren't allowed to excercise more than 2km from our homes for over a month.6 -
Welcome back @_nikkiwolf_ and @Mari33a! Good to see you both again.3
-
In for 100km (again).3

I did something.
I am running the full moon 50K July 18 with a friend and it is through the night, on a trail, in south Arkansas.... It will be HOT, but it's going to be so much fun. We signed up for it before my injuries started becoming really real, so I may need to just do 25K, BUT THE POINT IS
I ordered light up shoe laces. And light up/glow stick hair crap. And glitter. And glow in the dark body paint.
Because at the time, it seemed like a good idea (last night).
Have any of you done anything like this? I need some inspiration for what the heck I am doing. is this a rave or a race. At this point, it's anybody's guess.4 -
