@MuttiNM - it is awesome that you are riding a bike again! I keep thinking that I should get a bike, but I haven't ridden one in years either. If you can ride a bike and not crash into any hikers after 38 years, perhaps I can start riding a bike again too! This is inspiring me today!
@cesse47 - just want to say I love all of your posts
@rjivory - if you're looking for the emotional eaters in the group, I will raise my hand.
@Terytha - maybe not a whole wardrobe replacement, but what about 1 dress now? You have made so much progress!! I have learned to purchase clothes that are a little more flexible over a wider weight range since I have had so many weight fluctuations in my life. Maybe get something like a wrap dress that will still look great as you continue to lose weight
@torihudson6 - if you're looking to limit salt, start to explore other seasoning options. Garlic cloves, lemon/lime, cilantro/parsley, chili powder, cumin, vinegars, basil are all lower sodium options that I use frequently.
@sweetirish and @smithmns414 - My heart goes out to both of you. I spent 5 long years TTC. The infertility struggle is just excruciating, and I very much identified with your posts. Sending so much love to you both.
Checking-in:
I achieved my April Goals!
May Goals:- Climb 120 flights of stairs each week
- Get into the 170s
- Be better about pre-logging and minimizing snacking
- Continue strength training 3x / week. Use my new Resistance Bands! I've never really used resistance bands before but was fortunate to find some this week. Looking forward to having some fun with them!

Hi everyone:
@torihudson06 as someone on a low sodium diet I usually buys unsalted or low sodium foods. I uses Mrs Dash or Trader Joe's spices of the world 21 seasoning salute in place of salt on roasted vegetables and meats, also I uses this marinade on my meats, when I need more flavor and misses my grandmother's cooking. This usually makes about two cups. Hopes this helps.
1 bundle thyme, stems removed
1 bundle basil
1/2 bundle of parsley
10-12 scallions
1 head of garlic, (12-14 garlic cloves)
1 large yellow onion, chopped
1 whole scotch bonnet pepper or habaneros
1 tsp black pepper
1/4 tsp allspice
1/2 tsp fresh ginger
1/4 cup water or extra virgin olive oil
Instructions
Coarsely chop scallions and onion.
Add all ingredients to food processor. Add enough water or oil make a thick puree. Blend to desired texture.
Store in an airtight glass jar in the refrigerator.

@Rosie3579 You totally should try bike riding again! After so many years and so much weight and depression, etc., I never thought I'd get to a point where I could. I was likely the heaviest person on the trail but it still was a lot of fun! If the weather tomorrow cooperates, I plan to go for another ride. Again, it probably won't be too long but I'll work up to longer rides.6

@CupcakeCrusoe - I'm also a fan of Aadam from Physiqonomics. I appreciate that his advice is evidence-based and backs up it with scientific studies. And while I appreciate what @pamiede has to say about what is working for her in terms of the timing of her meals, one thing that I learned from Aadam is that at the end of the day, diets work when 1) you eat less calories than you burn and 2) you adhere to them. So for everyone starting out who is getting all kinds of great, but conflicting advice - here's what's important: to lose fat, you have to eat at a calorie deficit. Tracking your food is an effective way to ensure you are eating at a deficit. Beyond that, different methods work for different people because they help them adhere to eating at a deficit. Experiment, find what works for you.
Above all, find ways to make eating at a deficit as easy as possible.
Regarding salt - I'm the worst person to offer advice. I am a salt fiend. I love salt. I just discovered Maldon Falky salt and now I want to sprinkle it on everything. I can eat at a deficit everyday, but do not take away my Maldon!8 -

Hooray! I lost a little weight this week! I've also lost inches. Since last June, I've lost 12.5 inches on my waist and 13 inches off my hips! Even though I'm a size 14, I feel so tiny!
It's pouring rain, but I'm heading out for a 6 mile run. Next Saturday I'm supposed to tackle 9 miles. (I'm part of a now virtual half-marathon training group, so I'm following a set program.) I don't know if I can do it, but I am gonna try.

Hi, Im Jess. I’m a 15 (16 end of may) year old girl and i’m sure not a lot of kids are on here. When I was 9 I was told I have a hypoactive thyroid and my endocrinologist has been recommending this app to me for years. I’ve always been heavy but I go to sleep away camp and am always able to drop about 10lbs a summer yet it always find me through the year.
I tore my Acl and meniscus May 2019 and after the surgery I was on crutches for 6 weeks no weight down which I also had to miss camp for. So not only was I unable to attend the place where I lose weight, but I was in bed for 6 weeks placing me at my highest weight of 213 which before this point i never was in the 200’s which really upset me.
I was supposed to get surgery again for my knee but my doctor is shut due to corona so it’s almost been a year of not having good function but i’ve started to eat a bit healthier, try to go on a jog, ride my bike more, and hopefully i’ll get into a routine and stick to it.
So now you know my story if you cared to read but with this quarantine going on it hasn’t been helping me so I’m joining this app, finding a support group, and I’m going to put my weight back into my hands. If I don’t start today, I honestly am not sure when I will start and I think it’s about time.
213 Sw (5/2/20)
199 mini goal (before camp this summer if it happens, i just want to be out of the 200’s)
159 (my overall goal bc based on a BMI calculator that’s the highest number in the zone and once I get there I will re evaluate)
I’m not sure if any of you read this but just putting this out here into writing makes me feel so much better. Stay positive!

@hessjansen Welcome, Jess! This is a great group that offers a lot of support and helpful tips. Happy to have you here!3

Thanks for joining group, Jess! Women of all ages are welcome here.
I'm so sorry about your knee. I hurt mine as well a few years ago and it can be really rough, both mentally and physically. Camp sounds great and makes me miss when I used to go; I hope that it's open for you this summer.
Sometimes, it can be helpful to have your weekly/monthly routines or goals written down somewhere (e.g. bike once a week, jog three times a week). That way you can definitively see if you are accomplishing them or not, and adjust accordingly for the next week or month.
You've got such a positive attitude. I hope you keep posting and sharing how you're doing! Stay safe!7 -

Yes, we read this! Welcome! I think it is a pretty diverse group of women on this thread, but we all share the goal of wanting to improve our health and wellness through safe and sustainable weight loss. I would be happy to follow along with you and offer support along the way. Sending you positive energy tonight 😊4 -
My boyfriend is really sensitive to salt, so here are some of the things I've done to take it out of our meals.
I don't salt pasta water. I don't salt steamed vegetables unless salt IS part of the seasoning at the end. I often finish them with a sprinkle of French grey sea salt and a grind of black pepper, and that purposeful use is flavorful enough. But if I should finish some brussel sprouts with bacon drippings, I'll pepper but not salt; there's enough salt in the bacon drippings. I also buy dry beans instead of canned, and soak them myself. I use a lot of salt-free spice/herb mixtures from Penzey's, and focus on adding flavor with herbs and spices and unlocking them with water. alcohol, and fat.
I grew up eating pretty low salt. Right now the majority of my sodium is coming from the purchased breads I eat and from the corn chips I eat, and I know I could drop those if I wanted to lower my salt, but they're emotionally comforting right now, and I'm trying to be very gentle with myself until the lockdown is over and I can go to the gym again.6 -
Hi everyone, hope it is okay that I join you all A little bit about me..
I'm 51, married and have a 15 year old daughter. I am originally from Canada but live in the UK. I have had trouble with my weight my entire life and have tried every diet which always ends badly with gaining the weight back and more. I have been on MFP for awhile but had left for years and now I am back. My starting weight back was 427lbs and I am currently (weigh in today) 361.8lbs I am very happy with my weight loss so far but think it would be great to meet new friends on here and hopefully inspire each other. I know I have A LOT of weight to lose but just trying to do it with small goals.
I am classed as morbidly obese and that title makes me feel ill. I have always hated it but had done nothing about it. I have type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea. I have very low mobility, not only because of my weight but it certainly makes it so difficult. I have had a knee replacement a few years ago and am in need of another on my other leg but have been trying to hold off getting it done as I am not really that happy with the replacement I have had. The knee is bone on bone now so wont be able to put it off much longer.
To make things worse I just lost my Dad 3 days before my birthday and while in lock down. he has been battling cancer for quite along time but things were starting to get worse. I started crash dieting trying to lose some weight to get on the plane to fly home. (flying at my weight is so difficult) We had just come back from Canada in August 2019. Once the cancer had gone to his brain we all knew there was not time left and then I was unable to fly due to the corona virus lock-down. This was the strongest, bravest man I have ever met and it just destroyed me. I still find it hard to talk about without completely breaking down but I am determined to lose this weight that has held me back for years. I only wish he could have been around to see me do it.
So sorry for the long post. In short, I have a lot of weight to lose and could use all the support I can get.

🌹🐝 Good morning lovely ladies! I just realized as I got caught up on everyone's posts that I never actually posted here Friday. My mind seems so scattered these days! Here are my stats:
Sw: 288 April 2019

May has come in like a whirlwind. This month I am going to focus on movement. Whether it be formal exercise or just getting outside and being more active. I want to enjoy the warmer weather and not stress over what we aren't able to do because of Covid 19. Work has been crazy busy and considered essential so there has been no staying home. I am thankful to have income but yet worry every day whether I will be exposed and subject my family to this virus. In our area we are still seeing increase in cases and yet things are beginning to open back up. It's scary not knowing what the right thing to do is. 😳
I think we have to be kind to ourselves and just get through this. I have tried not to give in to stress snacking but on days I did, I told myself to get up and move. This has kept me from feeling guilty and beating myself up too badly which in turn leads to more unhealthy eating. This is something I have to continuously work on as I am my worst critic.
Welcome to everyone new! You wont find a more encouraging group! I would not have gotten this far alone! I may not always post but I am on here daily getting caught up on everyone's journeys. Lots to learn from and be encouraged from!! Have a great Sunday! 💐6 -
@BeUncommon Welcome! I am sorry for your loss of your dad. I lost my dad to lung cancer in 1998. He was only 44 years old. I dont think it's something you ever really get over. Hugs.
I found this lovely group in September and have been joining every month since! Some days I just come to read and find inspiration and other days I want to share success, struggles. So nice to have a place to go where we all have a common ground, like goals. No judging. 🌺5 -

Thank you very much Candy.. Yes, its not something you can get over (the loss of a parent) At least today, I feel I can breathe although I break down at the very thought of him.
Glad I decided to start posting here I think this could be good as well. You be careful out there being one of essential workers. Stay safe xo

@BeUncommon Even 20 plus years I still have moments where I break down if I talk about my dad or think about how terribly sick he was before he passed away. I try to hold on to the good memories. He never got to see me get healthy. But I feel he knows and would be proud of how far I have come in my journey. I am doing this for me. I want to be around to see my twin girls ( they are 25) grow old. I want to live a full life with my husband and not feel like I am holding him back. He is 10 years older than I am but very active. I want to be able to keep up and enjoy life to its fullest and not spend my time feeling bad because I didnt make myself, my health, my happiness a priority. I am worth the effort. We all are. I look forward to reading your posts! Have a great Sunday! 💕7

Yeah I know how you feel, I can totally relate with just about everything that you have said. My husband who is of more normal weight and quite active and my 15 year old daughter also. My health has been so bad for so long and if I don't change now, I will not be around to see my daughter grow up. They both worry so much about me and I always tell them "Its okay, I'm fine" but I am NOT fine and it is not OKAY. I need to not only do this for myself but also for my family. I am worth it, I am strong and I can make myself healthier. Looking forward also to getting to know you better .. You have a great Sunday also hun xx7 -

04/05 95.9 Kgs 210.98 - 19.89 lbs (-9 Kgs) It was less than I was hoping for but it was my period week and its a loss!
We've had quite a weekend, my neighbor was rushed off to hospital in an ambulance, he was restless on Saturday evening even confused (he is 50 years old, so it was unusual) then in the early hours of Sunday morning he started vomiting and collapsed on the bed, he was completely out of it, we couldn't get him to respond to us and we couldn't get him into the car so we called the paramedics. His Ekg was normal and bloods seemed fine but he definitely isn't! After hours they transferred him to another hospital that had no Covid-19 patients, my neighbor's wife wasn't allowed in she waited with her daughter in the car park, because it was on Sunday the Specialist was only coming in later, so we still waiting for results, hopefully, more tests with answers today. Very scary!! And with no contact with him leaving the family feeling scared and confused! They also worried about him being alone.8 -

Monday, and I woke up early to cook.
My mother-in-law (well, boyfriend's mom, but she will be, and I love her already) is having severe back issues, and the doctor wants her to have surgery. She doesn't want to. I can't fix her back, but what I can do is provide a couple of casseroles/things that will reheat easy so that she and Father-in-law can eat without her feeling she has to make him a good dinner. (He's not much of a cook.) And I delight in cooking.
I'm making them pot roast with carrots and potatoes, an apple cobbler, and dinner rolls. Also a pie-sized quichecake, of bacon and cheddar cheese and mushrooms, and orange-pecan sweet bread, like banana bread. That should solve breakfasts and dinners for a chunk of the week, and I can send them something else next week.
We ourselves are having chicken (and jalapeno, if desired) quesadillas for lunch, and Chicken Parmesan for dinner, with pan-seared zucchini and garlic bread.6 -

I've put on exactly 15 pounds since corona hit in February. While this is not good news, I'm not surprised. I was eating/bingeing all the things, staying in, and generally avoiding the scale.
This month, I feel like I'm in a good place mentally. I'm rejoining my gym and hoping to go around four times a week, preferably in the morning. I found out that one of my coworkers also goes to my gym and hopefully we can meet up at least once a week to workout together.
Also this month, I'm starting a no meat or dairy 30 day challenge. If it works out, I may go longer. My biggest concern with food right now is making sure I get enough protein. But I cooked tofu for the first time over the weekend and tried three different cooking methods with three different sauces. My favorite so far is a tofu crumble cooked in sweet chili sauce. I put it in a wrap with lots of veggies and it was great.
My goals for the month of May are:
1. Log all meals
2. Avoid meat/dairy/chocolate
3. Gym three times a week, but try for four
4. Make good food choices at work/work events
💜Happy May everyone! 💜9 -
orange > Thanks for the welcome It looks like you have your goals all set and doing great. You were so
close to the snacks being under 20%.. you will do it!!! Keep up the great work
Jess > I am also new to the group and using the community pages. Great to have you join us x
Venesia > I am not so new to MFP but have only been back here a couple of months but I felt the
same way when I was reading through some posts. I have only joined the community the other day and everyone
seems great. Nice to have you aboard.
Zoe > Nice to meet you. Not sure what the NSV stands for or the C25K but im sure it's exercise so
well done lol I have limited mobility at the minute myself. Just walking is very difficult. Hope I
get to a place where I can step that up
Changeforeverlj> So sorry to hear about your neighbour, that must be so incredibly scary for his family. Being
hospitalised is bad enough but not know what is wrong and it being at this crazy time must be driving them crazy.
My father was hospitalised during this pandemic but was in the hospice ward so my family were able to be at his
side 24/7 but they all had to wear masks etc. I hope they find out what the problem was and have it fixed and have
him back at home in no time x
Alexandra > Wow your in laws are very lucky to have you in their lives That food sounds wonderful. I would be
so terrible to be able to cook like that and not eat it. My husband is working from home now because of the Quarantine
and he also cooks food for him and our daughter while I cook for myself (the food I am using to lose weight). When he
goes back to work however I will be doing all the cooking and I really am going to have to learn to not eat and cook!! lol
Raven > Well sure sounds like you are back on track Where are you from that they have opened up gyms? Hopefully you can
work out with your coworker as Im sure it would make it more enjoyable I have never tried tofu before but I am a big
meat eater. I could not imagine going without meat. That is always my favourite part of the meal, everything else is just
a side dish..lol I wouldn't mind trying some new things though.. will have to look into trying new things. My girlfriend
had just mentioned she tried Polenta? I think that was what it was called. She said it is not too bad and an alternative
for meat (health reasons she is only supposed to eat meat once a week). So something you might want to try if you have not already8 -
I'm new and I already think this group is awesome. Thanks everyone!
I've been losing since the end of October, with a good long break in February and March. Got back in the saddle a couple of weeks ago with the Mayo Clinic Diet. The first two weeks are eating plant-based clean for two weeks 100% of the time, so I lost 7 lbs over that time. Now I am starting the more sustainable long-term phase of eating plant-based clean as much as possible, which I think means that one day a week I can allow some flex. At least that's my definition right now. We'll see how that goes!
Age: 32
Height: 5'3"
SW: 226.4lbs
CW: 203.8 lbs
GW: 160lbs (and then reassess)
Goals for May:
1) Get into the 100s!
2) Reach at least 13/15 points on the Mayo Clinic Diet checklist every day, except for one day a week
3) 30-60 minutes physical activity every day
4) Fit into the dress I wore for our City Hall wedding in July 2018
5) Easily run for 2 minutes at a time
6) Stay between 1200-1400 calories per day8 -
May the 4th be with you!
I'm still trying to frame some of my goals for the remainder of the month, but I wanted to pop in to say hi, and welcome to our new members. 🎉
@BeUncommon - NSV means Non-Scale Victory. They are so important. You've seen how so many have a variety of goals. Sometimes the scale can be a jerk, and if you're relying on weight alone to track your progress it can be really demoralizing when the scale is not reflecting your hard work. Having these other NSVs can help pull you through the rough patches when the scale is not acknowledging how hard you've been working. C25K is an abbreviation for the Couch-to-5K program. It is a popular running program that people adopt to start running, usually with the goal of completing a 5K race. I always warn that people should not be fooled by the promise of the title. You really need to be able to walk comfortably at a "good' pace for 30 minutes before you start the program. It doesn't mean you can't leverage the plan itself to help you progress to a higher level of fitness. I've adapted the intervals and the progression of those intervals over the nine weeks to other kinds of workouts, like on the elliptical or for biking. In that sense it's one of those things that if you start where you are and keep working, in a relatively short period of time you will see progress, hopefully without injury!
I am so very late to this party, and hope to be able to catch up tonight. I do have my data though.
It was a beautiful weekend here on the East Coast. Warmer than it has been for a really long time, and the first time that the temperatures have felt seasonal. (We are actually going to have a freeze warning this coming weekend!) Yesterday would have been the day of my 10-mile race, which of course was rescheduled. I did not let my training go to waste! I ran 10 miles yesterday on my regular trail!
I am glad that is out of the way, because I really need to back down a bit. My lower half was really starting to feel the overuse effects of only being able to walk and run for exercise. My hamstrings are a bit better, but still sore. And I'm having issues with tendons and ligaments in my legs and ankles. I actually had sharp pain around my right Achilles tendon and was hesitant about running so far yesterday. Stretching has helped all of the above, and I had no sharp pain yesterday during or after the run. I'm sure a relative degree of rest will help towards resolving these issues.

I am sincerely sorry for your loss. I lost my Mom in early March just as Stay At Home restrictions were being applied and it was extremely stressful to arrange everything, have her brought home from out of state, and tell people they were not allowed to attend, no hugs/kisses from those who did attend, etc. I can only imagine how difficult it must be for you being in another country. Again, I'm so very sorry for your loss.
I also am obese so understand that feeling. I'm 72, lung compromised, sedate ... so right now, it's baby steps for me getting started.
Good Luck!8 -

I think one of the worst issues with hospitalization is the isolation ... for both the patient and family members. As humans we need the support and presence of our loved ones. This separation is brutal just in that respect alone.
Hope your neighbor is diagnosed quickly and recovers quickly.6
