I’m so behind. Tried to catch up as best I could and delighted to hear @quilteryoyo’s dad is better and that you’re on the mend @Avidkeo.
I didn’t find out it was Global Running Day today until this afternoon so I’m extra glad I got my 5 miles in this morning!
Hope everyone is safe and well. X
June goal: 75 miles

Great running on Global Running day everyone! @pfprimo nice job on the 5k time! That's awesome!
@Lexigraph thanks and same to you - good job getting out there instead of going back to bed!
@Teresa502 your kayaking staycation looks great. I'm itching to buy a kayak but it seems like everyone I know who has one barely uses it, and I'm trying not to spend huge amounts of money right now (and if I bought a kayak, then I'd need a rack too). But I seriously want one!
Date :::: Miles :::: Cumulative

I didn't contribute much to global running day. But I did go to the track for a workout. First we did sprints and plyometric exercises between. Then we did a farmer carry with a dumbbell for .1 mile, ran a lap, then repeated two more times. It was so humid, and my hands could barely hold that stupid dumbbell.
I intended to run more later in the day but it didn't happen. I did talk a nice walk though. My legs are feeling heavy and I'm entirely unmotivated to run this week. I think I burned out last month. Maybe a cutback week will get me back on track.3 -
@katharmonic thank you for your kind words. Kudos to you on the sprints at the track - you reminded me that speed work is a critical piece to any running regimen. I typically run 3x week, averaging 4-7 miles at a moderate pace (in my case, ~11:45 mile). If I'm going to become a more efficient runner, I really do need to incorporate some speed work, whether its fartleks on my usual routes, or a visit to the local school track. Good stuff and thanks!1

For global running day, I ran 6.4. It was warm, and I went easy as I could. Sometimes it’s harder going slower. But I could tell that it was a good idea as my heart rate was higher at that pace.
@quilteryoyo Great news about dad. I know too well these stress tests!
@pfprimo good running ! That is my 5K goal..28 min or less. Long shot but a goal lol. My pr is 28:09 last year which I have yet to come close to. But I will keep trying. I run 3 days a week 4-7 miles as well and a long run on Sat or sun depending on weather and what I’ve got going on. Gives me a couple rest days which I might cross train or noting at all.
I’m wanting to try this Skratch or tailwind..Have to go to Fleet Feet soon as my shoes are at over 450 miles already, according to Garmin. And I kind of feel it in my shin I think. Could be placebo thinking need new shoes!

@Avidkeo a fellow hitchhiker of the universe!
See I knew I liked you for a reason!
Well I'm limping now!
Definitely my soleus muscle. And no I am not ready yet to run. One simple test, can I hop across the room pain free, really demonstrated how bad it is. I was unable to do this simple test.
He tested a lot of my ankle mobility and balance, and overall I'm good. Then on the treadmill to check my gait, footfall etc. And all good. He was quite complimentary actually! I have good strong calf muscles, land well, and have a good gait. He was impressed with my speed (lol yay), especially my walking speed.
Then tested how tight my hips were. Yeah they are tight. So I have a few stretches to do, a couple I do anyway but not as frequent as often as I should, and a couple of extras I know I should do but don't haha.
Been encouraged to do more cross training - so get out the bike, continue my fast walking. But no running for another week. Sigh.
He did a couple of dry needles - don't know much about acupuncture. Never had it, so I'm being open minded. Figured it couldn't hurt haha.
Now I'm limping around the house haha.
So I'm going to be good. No more running for a week. Sigh.
Pass the chocolate please. Oh. D'oh.8 -

I ran 7 miles on the trail this morning. Late start for me (10:30 am) and I could really tell a difference in the temperature compared to when I usually run at 6:00 am. I never could get my Garmin to connect to the Garmin Connect app on my phone which connects to Strava. My battery life of my Forerunner has not been up to par lately either. When I ran 14 miles on Saturday I only had 26% battery power left at the end of the run. This doesn't bode well for marathon training. So, since Garmin has a Father's Day sale going on, I ordered a new one this morning. Should be here next week!
@Avidkeo - hope you are healed and back to running soon. In the meantime, enjoy the cross training!
@katharmonic - I can't justify purchasing a kayak either. Yesterday, a friend of a friend had all these kayaks and he and his wife transported us and kayaks to the start and picked us up at the end point. It was very kind of them. The last time I went was a couple of years ago and we used a company that supplied the kayak and transportation for $20 or something. I figure as infrequently as I go, it's better to pay as I go!4 -
2.99 miles last night (I know, it hurts, but did not keep going to get 3 even).
5.50 miles tonight.

@kgirlhart - if you haven't ordered the toe caps yet message me and I would be happy to send you a pack. I have SO many! Pretty sure they will last me forever.
@quilteryoyo - so glad your dad is home and that they are adjusting his meds. Hope that helps him feel better!
@elise4270 and @avidkeo - I suspect there are several of us hitchhikers here!
@avidkeo - hope your calf feels better. Do you go back to see him next week?
@pfprimo - When I was able to run longer distances I was typically running 3-4 times during the week 3-6 miles each and then a long run of 8-10 or longer depending on where I was on my training plan. At least one of those days was a speed workout.
@katharmonic - my daughter wanted to buy a kayak too and she has a Subaru so has the rack to transport it. At the time though she had no where to store it. She could have gotten a nice one with an employee discount at REI. Now she has space for it but won't spend the money. Like @Teresa502, she rents one typically or borrows from a friend. She did the same this winter with skiing. She took cross country lessons and they included the skis, boots, etc. It was actually a great deal especially since most of the other people registered for the class didn't show up after the 1st lesson. She had privates and then access to all the trails for the rest of the day.
I went out for a run this morning but ended up deciding after taking the pup around the neighborhood, that it was too hot for him and too hot for me to run. I dropped him back home and changed my planned run to a power walk instead. Now my foot is sore where the stress fracture was. Hope I didn't re-injure it. I will ice it tonight and tomorrow is a cross train day so that should give it a rest. I am doing the NYRR virtual race in Strava for Global Running Day and since I didn't really run today I will do that mile on Friday. It should also be a bit cooler I hope.
I am not going to setup a ticker yet since I still don't know how much I will be able to run this month. I would like to join the 100 mile club again but for now I am just keeping it in the back of my mind.

Question - I know many of you get up really early before work to run. If you didn't have to get up for work would you still get up that early and run?
Background - I used to go for my run before my 6 or 6:30 am meetings started (worked from home). When I stopped working I kept it up for a while but I seem to sleep later and later now (also going to bed later) and I just can't seem to get up early to run any longer. I want to, have been working on getting to bed earlier too , but I never seem to get out the door before 8:30...
Also on another note, after all our discussion on AfterShokz - mine broke today. Same place as last time right by the controls. I don't think I am going to ask for another warranty replacement. I did use some duct tape on them and hoping it will hold them together despite the sweat. I am wondering if it is something I am doing or if it is a more common problem. The first pair lasted 5 months and the replacement 7 months. IDK maybe I should see about another replacement - they have another year on the warranty.

@shanaber I haven't ordered them yet. I was going to but I got busy at work and forgot. If you had some extras that would be awesome.
I get up before work on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and don't have any problems getting up. On Sunday I try to get up early before it gets too hot, but it is much harder when I don't have to work. I usually get out the door between 5:45 -6:00 on weekdays, but on Sunday I'm doing good to get out before 7:30. I guess having a time deadline makes it easier.1 -
I have lots so send me a message with your address and I will drop them in the mail tomorrow.1

I got in 3 miles this evening. It was hot, but I took it slow and easy.
@kgirlhart I was thinking the same thing about the B12 or some other vitamin deficiency. I do take a multivitamin, but maybe something is off.
8.07/100 miles for month
8.07/298 miles for Run Across Ga (6/1-8/31)5 -

It's always worth getting your thyroid checked if you're getting plenty of sleep but as still feeling fatigued. Maybe just ask for a full blood work up. Could be a number of things.1 -

@pfprimo I typically do speedwork once a week. Although now because we aren't meeting for run groups and I've been going a bit off-program from what my run coach assigns for the speedwork of the week. But I've been running with this coach for over 4 years and it's pretty ingrained in me to do 1 day a week hard run (speedwork), 1 day a week long run, the rest of the days easy base run. Normally I run 6 days a week but I've been on a run streak since December so I run every day. But one day is usually just a 20-minute run so that is my "rest day".
@teresa502 and @shanaber - yeah, rental is probably the way to go. I already feel like I have too many activities competing for time between running, working out, hiking, walking the dog - I can't imagine I'll fit in a ton of kayaking anyway.1 -
@quilteryoyo Glad the scans turned out well for your dad!
After a couple team members signed on the computer for the day, I decided to take a break and do my run before it became too hot. It was nice to break away mid-morning, something I wouldn’t do working in the office. It had rained last night, so I was glad I went when I did as it would have been pretty warm with the water trying to evaporate from the asphalt.

@avidkeo sorry about the pain and no running. It's hard when your motivated and training for something. I had dry needling done by my PT....it was such an odd feeling having the nerves fired like that. But it did help release really tight areas. And I am convinced so much of my issues stem from tight hips.....I really have to be better about stretching....0

I bought my Trekz in May of 2019 (I just looked it up) and I have not had any problem with them yet so I suspect you just got an unlucky draw twice. I would personally get them replaced under warranty if I was you.0 -

First run in a week (again). I think I need to fix something here...Question - I know many of you get up really early before work to run. If you didn't have to get up for work would you still get up that early and run?
In summer, yes. It's too hot by 8am to do much running. Other seasons I'd rather run in the afternoon if I don't need to be at work. That said though, life gets in the way an awful lot, and running in the morning usually means I actually get to do it.5 -

@shanaber I'm going back next week. He seemed fairly confident that I should be OK to run again then. He agreed my plan to drop to the HM for 30 Aug and concentrate on 1 Nov for a full was a good plan.
I agree with @PastorVincent, get them replaced. So annoying!
As for time to run, I have worked out I need to get up 2hrs before work to be able to get a run in (as long as an hr or less), breakfast and get to work. So I just do that. What ever time I'm working, I go out for my run 2 hrs before, unless I start at 3pm, then I just aim to get out before 9am.2 -
@shanaber Re: morning running. I prefer to run first thing in my day but my husband and I are self-employed extreme night owls, so our day begins in the evening. I’ve read some articles recently that supposedly there are people for whom their circadian is so determined to be nocturnal that it actually counts as a disability - they have trouble holding jobs with normal hours and are just miserable if forced to be awake on a normal schedule. That would be us, except that we have arranged our lives so we work long distance for a company in Geneva, and no one expects us to be awake during the day. When we have to deal with ordinary things like banking in person, we are jet-lagged for a week on either side. During summer in Memphis I have to run early mornings because the climate is hellish, but I do it by staying up, running late in my day, and going to bed around 9 am.
And on that note, we are still under a curfew. @T1DCarnivoreRunner - You remember that bbq place next to Shelby Farms? There was a protest in front of it last night with people lying down in the middle of the road on Germantown rd trying to block traffic. Although it’s scheduled to last until June 8, I am hopeful tomorrow the curfew will be over, since all 4 officers have been sentenced now, and the Memphis mayor has set up a 4 week long series of meetings with the heads of the local protest to discuss implementing their ideas on community policing. The main group has said they are not protesting Thursday or Friday. So that just leaves the splinter groups.
Last night, me, the nocturnal person, freaked the heck out at the feeling of being trapped and unable to legally move about my neighborhood. So we headed out at 28 minutes before curfew for a brisk walk around the neighborhood. Did 2 miles, arrived home 1 minute late.
Tonight we got out during the daytime. I’m doing a timed mile challenge, which is supposed to improve your mile time over a month, and today called for hill repeats. Had a little trouble finding a suitable hill in my neighborhood. The one we picked which always seems kind of difficult when chugging up it at the end of a long run turns out to be kind of a wussy hill when run fresh. Also, it was too hot. 91 degrees and then it rained. Yay maybe it will cool down! No, the street started steaming. And then we started steaming. It was disgusting. No evaporative cooling at all, it was like running in a bathtub. My shoes turn out to not have good traction on the type of asphalt we were running, so every step squeaked and slipped. My husband called for a heat break. So we started walking down and running up. We did five miles, followed by a nature walk. Got wheedled at by a very nice family of baby geese - worried they would charge us but they weren’t aggressive and made sweet noises. Saw a golden skink. By the time it was time to go home, it had cooled off enough for a sane person to start running. I want to run at night!!!!!
The good news is that although I felt like I was running through molasses, not helped by my husband charging past me saying things like, “Are you feeling okay today? I’m having trouble running this slow!” it turns out my uphill pace was consistently between 7:30 and 8:30 - so quite fast for us. He has been doing extra plyo work recently so maybe he is just getting faster on hills.4 -

I've only done a couple of small trail races but I'm trying to do more (some day) and I saw this, which perfectly captures the type of thought process I have while running :

March Total: 181k
April Total: 191k
May Total: 200k
2020 Total through May: 900k
Cloudy, low 60s F and no wind at all this morning. The scent from the multiflora roses was intoxicating. Too tired for moderate pace, but too strong for easy pace, so I did a tweener. My mock orange and roses are blooming, too.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2020 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs
Run at least 4 5k races
Get a 5k PR
Average at least 138k per month, to meet my Run the Year pledge of 1,020 miles
Stretch goal: If I can average 169k per month, I can run 2020k in 2020
Run the Year Team: Pavement Pounders
2020 races:
6-20 Freedom Run 5k, Aurora, OH (can't find it anywhere on line, so suspect it's cancelled)
9-19 Race for the Parks 5k, Hudson, OH
10-11 Haunted Hustle 5k, Aurora, OH4 -
06/01/2020: 3.1
06/02/2020: 2.5
06/03/2020: 3.1
06/04/2020: 4
The pace of my 4 miles today was significantly lower than my 5K yesterday (8:39 compared to 8:07), but I definitely will take distance over pace any day. In either case, not elite or even competitive pace by any means, but considering that a while back I was injured and I thought that I was never going to run again even running 1 mile is a victory in my book. Garmin now says that I need to rest 52 hours 😅

@Avidkeo yes, it's 42. Nobody can argue that.
@PastorVincent You're gonna need that towel
@quilteryoyo Good job! YOu did the thing!
@shanaber you are so freaking kind and generous and it looks so good on you
@Tramboman "Too tired for moderate pace, but too strong for easy pace, so I did a tweener." - this is the story of my life.
I had planned to run well for Global Running day, but a friend of mine (who is a boy and I think he wants something to develop but I keep saying no thanks, I really want to be present for my kids and running and working and Jesus and legit, nothing else) came up to ride his bike on the trails but ended up changing his whole plan to include my son - he even took his bike to the shop to get fixed and they rode for miles together. Then, when I got off work, he made us all this beautiful vegan dinner (yay, someone GETS me!) and then we all went to the dog park because they just reopened it and it is my daughter's favorite place. There were less than ten humans there, all at least fifty feet apart, and maybe like five dogs, including mine. On the walk back to the car, my son wanted to run, so I took my shoes off and tried sprinting but lifting my legs hurt so bad in the inner thigh area. It just felt like a hobble... It was awful lol.
So today, the kids' dad is picking them up to go camping which means I HAVE THE WEEKEND TO MYSELF! It's been weeks and I'm excited. I plan to roll out and massage my legs this evening and hopefully run, then go home and watch TV. It's going to be the best evening in the world.
Then work Friday (tomorrow) and more of the same.
Long run Saturday. I haven't decided on my mileage yet. We'll see. Oh! And I need to stop by the running store to get skratch and see what else is offered in terms of fuel that is less expensive than maurten.
You're all great - keep going.5 -
got a run in for global running day. we had no curfew but i still wanted to be careful. it was warm and humid but i took speed demon anyways. i made her slow down. she wasn't happy. she was especially unhappy with the bars being open and people standing outside and fireworks/gunshots in the distance.
it felt pretty good.never fails, always put it on upside down
post run soak
enjoyed sitting outside after. a beautiful night. speed demon didn't like it, fireworks/gunshots. the other two sat out with me. well, old girl sat. foster dog scooby was busy hunting something. i'm hoping he gets adopted this weekend. he's a lot of dog.6
