Thanks @Teresa502 and @shanaber and @quilteryoyo - it is a lovely scene downtown that I'm glad I took the time to appreciate because I'm not down there much these days. I'm in Syracuse NY, which is usually quite snowy this time of year but I'm sure it's coming eventually.
@Teresa502 that sounds like such a great cause to come together and I'm glad you were able to do it, although a day late.
@eleanorhawkins great job on your distance PR! Well done! So many emotions, but glad it was so good for your soul.
@Scott6255 great run. Glad you got a little time with your kids before they left too.
@Faebert I hope you are feeling better.
Nice running with the kids @polskagirl01. And well done on your Morning Mile! Running fast for a mile is definitely not easy, it totally stresses me out. Great job getting a PB on your route.
@quilteryoyo I'm sorry about your rough day and all things you that are falling on you to do. I hope you get things organized in ways that will help ease the stress and that you will get the help you need. Let go of what you can, scream when you need to.
@shanaber I'm sorry your hamstring is still hurting. Hopefully your walking will help and it will continue to heal up and you'll be back to running soon. I don't blame you for not wanting to go in to see a doctor right now. You had some great goals this year for consistency and strength and you did very well despite the setbacks. That will serve you well going forward, and hopefully a better year with fewer challenges ahead!
@martaindale I also like your goal sabbatical concept. I'm using that. Well done on the 10k PRs and getting back your climbing fitness. You'll be ready to reach your goals in 2021.
@HonuNui amazing photo of the volcano. And the food.
I'm going to revisit my 2020 goals soon so I'll be back with a report on how the year did not turn out as expected (shocking!).4 -

I made plans to run with my usual Sunday run buddy at 10 am, so I slept in and had a nice lazy morning drinking coffee and relaxing. I decided I should do a little makeup work for not doing a long run yesterday, so I headed out a little early and did 1.5 miles before meeting my friend. She usually wants to do 5k so I talked her into 3.5 miles so I could get to 5. We got a coffee after and it was a nice morning of talking about the ups and downs of the holiday and post-holiday.
4 days left in the run streak.6 -
Hi all - I set up a 2021 Run the Year group if anyone is interested in joining us (individually or as part of a team) or if you just want to follow along with us!

I waited until around 12:15 to run today and was rewarded with sunshine and warmer temps. A lot of the snow has melted this afternoon. The first mile and a half was on pavement but most of my route was on a gravel road. Footing was a little tricky with icy patches still on the roads. In addition to horses and cattle, I saw two llamas, sheep and some donkeys. Made my monthly goal so everything else is just icing on the cake (which I greatly enjoyed after my run). After the run I walked 1.78 miles back up the ridge to my house (539 feet elevation gain).6 -
@Teresa502 That looks like a cold, slippery run, but beautiful. That last picture looks exactly like one of the roads next to my house.2

I haven’t been on the laptop much so I’m catching up.
@ContraryMaryMary I could do with that view
@quilteryoyo you have been on my mind. Beautiful pictures of the snow, we had like 19F days but not snow.
Thanks @shanaber
Skip and I had a very quiet Christmas just the two of us. We went up to Monte Sano to run some trails, it was 21F and pretty chilly for these Alabama girls. About mile 2.5 she started to complain she was freezing, which isn’t like her. We started back to the parking lot and I actually gave her my running jacket to wear and walked with my arms around her. After a few minutes wrapped in a blanket in the warm car she said she was better.

Nice run @Teresa502. Looks beautiful. Congrats on making your goal.
OK, back with the progress on the goal list I wrote back in January:
2020 goals- Be active every day in January (and beyond?) - This one I definitely exceeded my own expectations. When I wrote it I had no intention of doing a full year run streak. So big check mark to this one as I ran every day since Dec 18 of last year (so far 376 days, hopefully 4 more to finish 2020). I also did ton of strength training, functional training, and hiking, so I definitely nailed "daily activity" ✅✅✅
- At least 1 "destination" HM - Alas, no. There were no destinations and no half marathon races. ❌❌ I did run the HM distance twice, so that's...something.
- Do a relay race - Ragnar or other - also a big no ❌
- More trail running and at least 2 trail races - trail running yes I did a little more of that, sometimes at the end of a 15 hour hike which was definitely not what I had in mind ✅. Trail races no ❌
- Finish at least 1 Spartan trifecta - no Spartan races at all ❌
- Compete in age group for at least 1 Spartan race again, no Spartan races ❌
- Hike at least 2 Adirondack High Peaks - another one I unexpectedly exceeded by a lot, I did 23 of the 46 high peaks (peaks over 4000 ft)! ✅✅✅
- Hike at least 2 of the Lake Placid 9 peaks - these are smaller mountains in the Adirondacks. I had done 4 of the 9 before this year. I didn't do any of them, focusing on the high peaks. ❌
- Continue to improve with rock climbing - this started out promising but I stopped climbing in March when the climbing gym closed and haven't been back. I miss this and would like to work on it in 2021. ❌
- 5 strict pull-ups in a row - I definitely have done 5 in a row but the "strictness" of it is in question ✅. I am working at these again as I slacked off during the time when the gym was closed.
- Try something new that scares me a little - a lot of things about hiking the high peaks were new to me and scared me a little, although I don't think this is what I meant exactly I'll give it a ✅. I'm still hoping to do downhill skiing before new year's so that could be one too.
- Prioritize stress reduction activities - block off in schedule/calendar - I did work specifically on this. I scheduled gym time and yoga in my work calendar so that meetings wouldn't get scheduled early those mornings. Who knew that there would be a whole different kind of stress and that I'd end up working at home so much. Exercise of all kinds and being outside was definitely what kept things manageable for me. ✅
Things that were not on the list that I accomplished running-wise:- 5k PR - in November in one of the two official in-person races I did all year. It's kind of funny because I remember purposefully not putting any specific race or time goals on my list because I was disappointed the year before and it stresses me out to focus on it. But I know I feel stronger and faster and could probably improve this.
- My highest mileage month ever in May at 182.6 miles and most miles in a week at 61.1 miles. This was due to the 48 miles in 48 hours challenge I decided to do at the last moment (the morning of the challenge). Which, I can add that to things that scared me a little.
Despite all the challenges, sadness and disappointments of the year, I feel lucky and grateful that I was able to do all of these things. I'm going to have to think hard about goals for 2021. It's a different world out there and I feel like I have a different outlook and different motivation than a year ago. And I'm going to have some big changes in job responsibilities that are going to really affect my time starting this summer, so I'm going to have to work really hard to not give up on all of this. I know I want to finish the high peaks if I can. I definitely know that I won't be doing a year long run streak. The rest is still unwritten.8 -

58.91/40 running miles completed for December
1340.79/1000 miles for Run the Year Team
I ran 8 miles today. It was a nice run, but it was windy. It was cool when I started, but by the time I was done I was getting hot. I wore shorts and a t-shirt, but I was wishing I had worn a tank top. It's hard to imagine that many of you were running in snow.
I enjoyed the run and was glad to get back up to 8 miles. I saw a really cool red tail hawk. He was in a tree and I guess I started him. He flew out of the tree about 5-10 yards in front of me. I've never seen one that close and it was pretty cool.
Looking back at my goals for 2020.
1. Run 1300 miles. I ran 1295 in 2019 so I should be able to get this one.
I'm at 1340 so this was accomplished.
2. Run the HM distance at least 3 times either in races or on my own. I am already signed up for one HM this
year.
I only ran the HM distance twice. I was planning to run it once more in December, but the hip tendonitis cancelled that plan.
3. Find a 10K race to run. There are never any around me so this one may be difficult.
Covid cancelled this one.
4. Continue to do yoga at least 5 times a week.
This one was a success.
5. Maintain my weight. I am mostly maintaining, but still losing very slowly. I am maintaining at around 114, but
my maintenance range is 115 - 120. I don't mind where I am, but don't want to go lower.
I did end up revising my maintenance range to 113-118. I think I will end up averaging about 113 this year, but I don't want to go any lower so I will keep working on this one.
5. Be more patient with myself and others. This is always hard for me.
Still a work in progress
6. Do not let stress overwhelm me. This is hard for me too.
This has been harder for me than expected this year. Between losing my Dad in September, losing my job and starting a new job in October and Covid this year has just really sucked and be I have been overwhelmed by stress a lot.
7. Clear out the clutter and have a garage sale. We tore down our free-standing garage in 2019 so I guess it will
have to be a "yard sale". We have so much junk and we keep saying we will have a garage sale. I am ready to
either have the sale or just dump it all into the trash dumpster.
I was nervous about trying to have a garage sale during Covid, but honestly I don't think I would have accomplished this one anyway.
I will have to put some thought into my goals for 2021.
2020 races:
11/7/20: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon6 -
Just searched out what I wrote down in the January thread as my goals. I was nursing a sore knee and wary of tempting fate. Still....
- In a perfect world my goals for the first half of the year are to run my first trail race, a 10km on Feb 8th, my first trail HM on Feb 28th and a road HM on March 22, then we have a week long hiking holiday over easter and I'm signing up for a road 10km on May 10th.
- I also want to continue with daily yoga, and I MUST make myself resume regular strength training.
I was unable to run the trail 10km in Feb because I was in bed with a nasty bout of tonsilitis. I didn't dare sign up for the trail HM on Feb 28th because I was still not fully recovered. With hindsight I sorely regretted that decision as it was the last race held here before things started to cancel. March 22nd road HM: initially postponed to November, now postponed to November 2021. Hiking holiday: cancelled. May 10km: cancelled. Every other race I'd intended running: cancelled.
The yoga has been a great success, I haven't checked but I don't think I've missed more than a day or two at a time.
Strength training continues to be a disaster, I never seem to manage to find time. Really must work on that in 2021.
ETA: A question to the group... anyone have experience with running and blood pressure medication? I've been kind of borderline for many years but now it seems to have rocketed, possibly something to do with all the stress of the last few months. My mother has been on medication since she was in her early 40s, and I'll be 43 on Friday so I'm pretty resigned to being prescribed meds. My doctor is supposed to be phoning me later today anyway to give me the Covid results that we were already given by message on Friday, so I will talk to him about it.
Just curious as to whether starting new meds and getting it regulated is going to make me pass out on runs or anything because I run alone, usually in the middle of nowhere.

This is interesting:
goals for 2020
1: lose the last 10kg. I actually want to lose 12 total to get into the mid range of what's healthy for my height and this will be the year I do it. I'm now settled and have a plan in place that I'm already following. did not happen. I lost about 7kg before April and gained it all back. I weigh about 1lb more now than I did last year, so that's something I guess, I didn't put anything back on haha
2: run a half marathon again. I'm starting to feel the drive to do this. I'm already planning on the Wellington half in July. I want to slay that demon - this was the first half I ever did and it was awful. well I kinda achieved this. I decided to train for the Wellington Auckland marathon, and ran 22, 24, and 26km while training for Auckland. I didn't get to run Wellington because it got cancelled, and I got an injury at the end of May. I managed these distances before the injury though so I count this as achieved!
3: run 1200 km in 2020. I averaged around 60km per month in 2019. I'm going to increase that to 80 for the next couple of months, then 90, then 100 by the end of the year. A SLOW increase errr um well. I don't have any idea how far I ran. But given I did no running at all for about 4 months I don't think I achieved this distance.
So was a bit hit and miss for me.5 -
Hi all. Been AWOL since I headed to Tibet. And since I got back things have gone a bit bottoms up COVID-wise in Beijing. Working from home again this week.
First things first. Let's see what I wrote in January.- Work out more consistently. Run 3 times a week, preferably. I need to get out of the mindset that "I need to do exactly the workout prescribed or I'm not going to run", and work toward "even a quick 3km is better than nothing at all". Add more stretching and more running-specific strengthwork into the cycle. Actually, check. Besides the stretching part. But yeah. Much more consistent about getting something done, compared to nothing at all.
- Lose 5kg. Right now I'm hovering around 65kg. 60kg is closer to (but still higher than) the upper boundary of optimal racing weight for my height. Nope. Went down to 61kg at one point then ate it all back.
- Eat more carbs. No really. Even before that whack doctor told me it would up my Chi last week, I was thinking about fiddling with my intake because I was getting far more hungry during long runs than back when I was eating whatever I wanted. How to do that while losing weight... it'll be interesting. Check.
- Racewise, I'm already signed up for an HM and a full in the spring. I'm thinking about a second HM after the marathon. A marathon PR is unlikely, but an HM PR seems possible. Still haven't decided what to race in the second half of the year. Ha. Oh the best plans...
Secondly, Tibet. Pictures. Need I say more?13 -
@skippygirlsmom That looks like a really "cool" place to run. I hope Skip is okay!
@katharmonic ! You did fantastic this year. All the things you didn't do were out of your control. You're awesome.
@kgirlhart You did great on your goals too. Being stressed with all that went on this year is not a failure in my book. You survived and are doing good. Great job on you 8 mile run yesterday.

I was up this morning and ready to run, taking my time eating breakfast (banana instead of cookies this time) and drinking my tea, when I heard my husband upstairs. I was afraid he was about to come down and tell me "I have to go do ______ and can you run later"... SO... I quickly got my shoes on, grabbed my jacket and ran out the door before he came out of the bathroom 😆
It was a great run, didn't feel that cold and the sun was shining beautifully. I've found myself drawn to some of my old routes that are back roads but not necessarily forest like I've been sticking to. I think I'm saying goodbye to my favorite spots. But Reddy the squirrel wasn't out when I went past his spot, and the swans also weren't on their pond. So maybe I'll go that way again before we move. More for Reddy though; the swans are in their own little world and couldn't care less about me.

Cloudy, mid 30s F, and a nasty wind out of the southwest. A lot of our snow melted overnight; just one of the side streets was a little icy/slushy. Saw a lot of geese flying around, looking for something green to eat.
@eleanorhawkins I was on blood pressure meds for a long time; finally got off them when I lost weight and maintained my running. They actually ended up making my BP too low, and started affecting me when I would go from sitting to standing.
@noblsheep Great pictures of Tibet.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2020 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs -- Fail

Congrats to all you great people for meeting so many of your 2020 goals. All the race goals were out of your control, so don't sweat those.
Only a very minimum 4 miles this morning. But got to my 100 mile goal for the month. Very surprised that my stride length averaged 1.05m. On a treadmill no less. I am usually happy when it gets over 1.0m on the road.

Good job everyone on doing the best you can on goals this year. So many plans made with the best of intentions!
@noblsheep Great pictures! Tibet is one of many places on my travel bucket list.
@eleanorhawkins Re: BP meds and running. Especially if you are currently not on any meds, take it slow with running and adding in meds initially. If possible, stick closer to home and do some easier runs (not anything that is super taxing like speed work or fast pace work) to start with. And make sure you walk after your runs to let your heartrate and BP normalize a little before you stop moving entirely. Hopefully it won't affect you too much but like @Tramboman mentioned, BP meds can cause dizziness and lightheadedness as your body adjusts to the lower baseline BP. There are plenty of people who run with BP meds but even in those who don't run, it can take some time to get meds optimized for any particular person.3 -
@Tramboman @martaindale thanks, yeah, it's the dizziness and stuff that worries me. I haven't been doing any speed work for some time now, but I have been finding I've started feeling lightheaded towards the end of long runs but was putting it down to lack of fuel as I run on coffee and a banana and have also been on a deficit for a few months losing the lockdown pounds.
I've been at threshold levels for probably 15 years and admittedly I hadn't thought to check it for probably a year or so. It isn't all that high, but high enough to need something doing about it.
Worryingly though, the doctor (who phoned me to confirm my negative PCR and obviously wasn't expecting me to come out with BP worries!) didn't even bother talking about weight, diet, lifestyle or anything. Though the only things I could even try to do would be cut out caffeine anyway. He just happily prescribed a mild medication and told me we'd talk in a few weeks to see how it's going.
I've taken one, and 5 hours later my BP is the lowest I've seen it since I was taken off the meds they gave me for it at the end of pregnancy. So yeah, I'm not sure if they will make it drop too much. If so, I may experiment for myself with cutting them in half. I also think I'll probably take them after I get home from running rather than beforehand just in case.2 -
I am enjoying reading everyones review of their goals! Seems like so many took a hit from Covid as expected but others we all did fairly well on! Maybe all those racing and travel related goals can be moved over to later in 2021?
@Teresa502 - beautiful pictures! That road looks like where I lived as a kid. We loved it when the road got like that and we could run and slide all the way along it!
@skippygirlsmom - Wow that is cold for you all! I hope Skip is nice and warm now!
@noblsheep - Tibet looks fantastic! Were you able to get in some runs while you were there? I am sorry you are having another Covid breakout! We just can't seem to get it even slightly under control here. We are expecting an extension of our stay at home order in So CA since the rates are so high and ICU beds are at 0%. It was supposed to expire today but I don't see how that could happen now. I am figuring probably another 3 weeks at least.
@eleanorhawkins - I have not run on BP meds but I would also make sure you always start out with a walk. I think you typically do that anyway but it will give your body time to adjust and see how you feel while closer to home. If you have a HR monitor I would also track your HR as like @Tramboman said, it can make your HR drop really low.
I woke up to pouring rain this morning. On the one hand YAY! We need rain and haven't had any for so long. But on the other hand dragging myself out for a rainy walk is tough. A rain run I would love a rain walk - not so much... I am seeing a patch of blue sky though so maybe I can zip out for a quick walk while the rain stops for a bit!4 -
@eleanorhawkins I take BP meds every day (okay when I remember) and all my other numbers are good, the doctor says hereditary since it seems everyone on Mom's side of the family has it. Hopefully daily meds will help you out and you have no issues. I remember when I started taking them it was right after a surgery where the nurse was having a fit because my pressure was so high. The next morning it was so low I thought I was going to fall down the steps trying to go to work. The only issue I have now is if I don't know it I get a headache, usually the reminder that I need to take it.
Good luck.
@noblsheep wow amazing pictures
@shanaber and @quilteryoyo she was fine by the time we got home. Not like her to get so cold like that, but then again we've become babies about anything under 60 ha ha
Not sure if I'm going to run today, I met my goal so I should rest my knees some. Got up to go to out this morning and then started horsing around with the dogs and all, then decided to walk them. Got to work and our network is still down there since Tuesday. Seems the entire world is on vacation. Came back home and I might go later.5
