I’m trying to catch up so sorry for some long overdue comments.
Obviously my mileage for February is zero.
Just a quick update, stitches came out last week and a new cast is on for the next 3 weeks. After that I start PT 3 days a week for at least 6 weeks to start. Besides that life is boring. I've been going into the office, which can be exhausting (my co worker picks me up), otherwise I've just been sitting at home.
@skippygirlsmom Glad to hear that the stitches have come out. I hope that it's one of the new Plastic Walking cast's that you can remove - allowing you to get a good soak in a Tub or Shower without the old double Plastic Garbage Bag trick to keep the cast dry. One of the ladies in our little club had a similar break to her ankle last winter ( ironically we were within 500m of the hospital ) and she is back to running and up to 10-15k depending on terrain and weekly distance all ready completed. The pin and screws stay in unless they start to cause severe discomfort after the bones have healed. PT is amazing, especially if the PT is a fellow runner/athlete who understands what your recovery goals are.
Feeling your Boredom - Pain on sitting at home. We have 3 people in our local shop/office.
Working from home and rotating in to the office every 3 to 6 work days depending on jobs/projects so if one person gets covid the other 2 are still operational. So if I am champion on a project that takes 3 days then everyone else stays home until my project is completed.
Missing the Human Social Face to Face contact but the hospitalization numbers prove that the social distancing is working to flatten the infection curves.2 -
Hey Everyone! Just joined MFP, and have been training (since Jan) to run a 4.2 mile run on April 24th,2021. Really looking forward to using these monthly threads as a way to keep me accountable, but also surround myself with some fellow runners!
I've always been an athlete, but have really never had the self-discipline to be consistent with running. I'd power out a mile, just to get it over with. Over the last month, I've slowly gotten to a point where I'm enjoying running and am trying to increase my distance, rather than just looking at speed and powering through a single mile.
Currently reading Running on Air, and trying to really master my breathing, as well as increase the distance I can run in each individual running session!
Edit: Feb goal is 60 miles, currently at 10 miles as of 02.10.21

2/1 2.02 miles 3.5 mph - treadmill
2/2 2.23 miles 3.5 mph - treadmill
2/3 2.00 miles 3.6 mph - driveway laps
2/4 2.00 miles 3.3 mph - driveway laps
2/5 2.00 miles 3.5 mph - driveway laps and neighbor's field
2/6 1.75 miles 3.3 mph - driveway laps and neighbor's field
2/7 2.50 miles 3.6 mph - driveway laps
2/8 2.00 miles 3.8 mph - 2 separate walks to my mom's and back
2/9 2.00 miles 3.6 mph - driveway laps
2/10 3.00 miles 3.7 mph - driveway laps, neighbor's field, to mom's and back
Monthly Total: 21.50/56 miles
It was a really nice afternoon - sunny and 65°F! Oh how I wish I could have gone for a run or been able to do yard work. Since neither of those are allowed, I opted for walks and reading. I took Tippy for our normal walk into the neighbor's field and then did driveway laps to make 2 miles (3.6 mph). I took a text book on birding outside and read it for a little over an hour. Then, I walked to mom's, spent some time with her and visited with the neighbor's who came over, and then walked home. Mom walked with me from her house to my turn around point and back, both when I got there and when I left. So, she walked almost a mile today. I didn't count those sections because they were slower than 3.0 mph. Anyway, the half mile to mom's I did at a 3.9 mph pace. The one back I did at 3.6mph.
Mom and I may have come close to becoming "jogger" on our first walk. When we turned to go back toward her house, there was a police car sitting at the top of the hill. An officer got out with a police dog and started walking the edges of the road. When he passed us I asked, "Are you looking for something?" Of course they were, but I wasn't sure how to ask. He said, "Yes. A gun. If you find one, call us." Ummm. Okay. Mom had seen an ambulance go down the road a couple of hours before. We haven't heard, but am now assuming someone got shot. We looked in the creek as we walked over the bridge, but saw nothing. At least they were looking for a gun and not a fugitive, or body.5 -

2/2 3.50 Cote D'Ivoire and Cape Verde Islands
2/3 off
2/4 3.35 Cambodia

@skippygirlsmom : glad the stitches are out!
*So, my 2021 resolution is to hike/run all 193 (or 195 depending on your source) countries of the world this year. This could be difficult, since I don’t have a passport. But YouTube to the rescue! I have been using the site to take train “trips” recently, and have found them strangely motivating. Why not use Youtube vlogs to hike/run the world (and learn something about each country)?

Welcome @TheMinx89!
@quilteryoyo I’m so glad you’ve been able to get in so much walking!
@katharmonic Hope you feel better soon!
I ran 2.2 miles around the neighborhood last night. The weather forecast of course keeps changing for Saturday’s race. It looks like it is going to be rainy and in the high 40s. I’ve run in that before, so I feel a lot better than when they said 20 and snow.4 -

Had a couple of inches of snow overnight, so rather than dispute with the cars for right of way, had fun on the treadmill.
@TheMinx89 Welcome to the group!!!
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)3 -
@HonuNui When I was in the AF, I had a 3 month class with a guy from Chad - it was a military exchange thing. He was so nice. I found it interesting that, at the time, if you joined their military (which I think was mandatory for some), you were basically in for life and had to serve whether you got paid or not. Also, he was going back to an arranged marriage. So different from our culture.
Thanks @marisap2010 ! I'm glad the forecast looks better for your run.

@142jmh - love your pup! I have several friends who have Burmese Mountain dogs who run agility with them! I find it so fun to watch them run! They aren't fast but they really enjoy themselves!
@katharmonic - so many of the big dogs I have met, Burmese, St Bernards, Great Danes, Giant Schnauzers, etc. are such lovers! They just want to lean against you and get loved and petted. Too bad they mostly come put to my waist at least and almost knock me over!
Also my dd has told us the 2nd dose vaccine is creating some pretty awful side affects. She did not have any but many of her coworkers and patients have. Basically she said it can be as little as fatigue and as bad as a fever and flu like symptoms. I hope it is just fatigue and headache for you
@Faebert - not sure if you can get kinesiology tape of some kind there but here is a link to the KT Tape site. They have all kinds of videos for taping various body parts. I think most are also on YouTube. Like others have said I would not do anything until you are pretty much pain free.
Welcome @TheMinx89 to our crazy group. Warning this thread moves fast (we are a chatty bunch) but just jump in to the conversation or ask questions.
@quilteryoyo - glad there was no body and you didn't end up as joggers! Also your mom is doing great!
@polskagirl01 - is the AQ usually bad where you are now? You really did a great job getting run in even if in pieces!
@juliet3455 - I miss the face to face interactions too and even with the few zoom calls with friends it just isn't the same.
Weather - of course right now when I can't really run much (reading @katharmonic's ladder workout made me want to run intervals 😢) the weather is perfect. We do have a small threat of rain this weekend but it is staying in the high 50's/low 60's. I am sure about the time I can run more it will get hot again.
My dd let me know that they are expecting nearly a foot of snow this weekend in Seattle! Yikes - I am sure it will be coming across the US after that!
I went out for a walk/run yesterday and ended up just walking for the vast majority of it because my hamstring was just not having any part of it. The pelicans were back, I am guessing there must be a lot of fish right now or something drawing them in. Or maybe they are getting ready to nest.
The hamstring continued to hurt last night and I couldn't get comfortable all night. I see a nap in my future but I want to get in some strength work first.3 -
Current situation. Hibernating for a week.
Good opportunity after 4 months of really REALLY pushing mileage to take a break. Altho I am jonesing to do something it's way too slippery out.

@shanaber & @quilteryoyo the air quality is mostly from cheap coal and trash (not allowed but people do it anyway) used for home heating. It tends to be worst overnight in cold weather. There have been some government initiatives and ad campaigns to encourage switching over to more efficient heat sources, but it only takes one house to stink up a large area, and there are LOTS of homes still on older systems, all over the country. Obviously not every homeowner has the money to buy a new furnace system. We're on a newer "eco-pea coal" furnace, and so far it does seem a LOT more efficient. Anyway, come visit during the summer, spring or fall - more daylight, clean air, beautiful places to run.
Today I did my planned run in the morning and it was much better than yesterday. I did turn around about halfway because the sidewalk there wasn't plowed, but it didn't change the planned distance. But it's also Fat Thursday here, aka donut day, so we decided to join in on the fun. I added some treadmill and walk-with-daughter kilometers to "celebrate" the donuts and ended up with about 14k total, spread out through the day. Probably will rest tomorrow and try that virtual trail route one more time on Saturday before submitting whichever time is the least super-slow and just accepting that I might be last again
Warning: Donuts7 -
@shanaber I hope your hamstring feels better and allows you to get some rest tonight. I also hope you had a nice nap this afternoon.
@SummerSkier Ice coated trees are really pretty, but I know that means really treacherous roads. Stay safe and enjoy the rest.
@polskagirl01 When I was a child, we burned coal. It is a pretty nasty form of heat. I'm glad it was better this morning.2 -

It's a chilly, rainy day, so I opted to walk on the treadmill. I was entertained by an early episode of Bones.5 -

Thanks guys, I got slammed with the whole slate of side effect unfortunately. I went to be kind of early and woke up a couple of hours later with chills, aches, joint pain, and swollen lymph nodes. I'm pretty sure I had a fever but don't have a reliable thermometer right now. I had to get up and layer on some more clothes and then spent the rest of the night cycling between too hot and too cold and just generally feeling like a bad case of the flu. I was supposed to be at the gym at 7 so of course that did not happen, and I got up for a little while and took Stella to daycare because I knew I couldn't walk her today and it's been such a busy week she hasn't gotten a walk for a couple of day. Then I cancelled a meeting and went back to bed. I woke up feeling quite a bit better at 10-ish. I had to teach my class at 2 so I went in for that but it was tough. I mostly felt less flu-like but still just exhausted and everything was SO HARD.
By the time I got Stella and got back home I was feeling worse again from too much activity. Now that I've taken a hot bath and Advil and gotten back into bed I'm doing better but still achy and tired. Hopefully I will feel much more recovered tomorrow. Take home message is that the second dose can pack a good punch so try to have a quiet day after! I guess it's a good indicator that my immune system is all fired up and ready to fight.
Anyway, no run today! And no exercise of any kind, even walking. This is the first total rest day I've taken since mid-December 2019 (yes, I had to look that up). I wish I would have enjoyed it more, but can I say thank goodness I didn't have a run streak to save. I may take tomorrow off too.10 -
@katharmonic Hugs. I hope you are feeling better tomorrow!0
-
Speaking of donuts, @polskagirl01 , it's almost paczki time...2
-
Yikes @katharmonic! That doesn't sound good. Hope those side effects go away quickly. Your body is working overtime making all those antibodies. You'll be able to fight off anything after a couple days ☺️5
-
Hey all. 8k run again today. Long run of 16k tomorrow then taper for a week. I'm actually looking forward to this taper, will be a good chance to heal/rest a bit before the HM.
Also working this weekend as well. Shift, so start at 3pm, finish at 11. Going to be a long week I think.5 -
I am so far behind on the thread. I am reading, but will mostly just be able to give likes and hugs. There is no way I can respond to every one. I guess I will be able to get caught up this weekend though since it doesn't look like I will be running. I know some of y'all are used to those kinds of temps, but I am not. I'll take the heat over this kind of cold any day. I didn't run yesterday or today and it may be a week before I get back out there. I hope not, but not only are the temperatures unusually cold for Texas, but there is a wind chill so it seems even colder. So this week is going to be mostly just yoga.10

An email came out about my half marathon tomorrow that since we are running in a military base, they are requiring all runners to wear masks for the entire race. Initially, we had to wear them to start and then put on at the finish line. Everyone is more than aggravated about the last minute change. I am totally fine with wearing masks around others, and I wear one when I run at the gym, but that is usually 30 minutes or so. If I was running the 5k, I wouldn’t mind at all because I know others would likely be close and it would be short. But during the half and the marathon, I know there will be huge stretches with no one around. Had I known earlier, I either wouldn’t have signed up, or I would have trained for a longer distance wearing a mask. We’ll see how it goes. I definitely won’t be trying for any PR now.14

You missed it, the pączki are gone! But I do think a few countries celebrate something similar on Tuesday0 -
@kgirlhart Burrr! That's REALLY cold. I don't blame you for staying in.
@marisap2010 Yeah. They should have let you know earlier. Good luck.
Happy New Year @noblsheep ! I think I may be a day late, but the sentiment is there.

Cloudy, low 20s F, with a nasty little wind from the east. Fastest 7k since last November, and I earned the "Year of the Ox" badge as well.
@kgirlhart It's best not to run in temperatures like that.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)4 -
Had a little extra time this morning, so got in 6 miles on the treadmill. Deep freeze here in North Central Texas this week and all of next week. Mornings in single digits, highs not getting above freezing. Actual snow accumulation expected in the next few days. Summer conditions to a lot of you, but it wreaks havoc and chaos for us down here. Yesterday there was a 133 car pile-up on the freeway near me.

@quilteryoyo Happy Lunar New Year to everyone on the thread! Not late at all, today is the first day of the year of the Ox!5
