You missed it, the pączki are gone! But I do think a few countries celebrate something similar on Tuesday
That would be us people of Polish extraction in northeast Ohio!!!
Well in that case, "Smacznego!" Enjoy!
I wish I could. My weight loss regimen does not allow for such an extravagance. I would be unable to exercise sufficient discipline to not eat the entire box. We get them in half dozen boxes.2 -

It was rainy here again. The temp wasn't too bad, 42°F, but it felt really cool to me. Still, I opted for an outdoor walk so that Tippy could get her exercise. She had been laying around in the house most of the day.
I was feeling a little tired and just not in the mood to do a lot, so decided to cut the walk short. I thought about going only 1 mile, but I have a hard time feeling that I am getting any benefit from a 1 mile walk. A fast one mile run I could see, but not a walk. So, I decided to go for 30 minutes and stop when I got to an "even" mileage point. At 29:58 I reached 1.75 miles. What to do? Me, I rounded up the time and stopped at the mileage. Do any of you get hung up on being exactly at some number? If so, which one trumps the other, distance or time?5 -

ALL the time. I tend to set a minimum number of miles I want, like 3 or 5, and then if I get to that and it's close to even number of minutes I'll keep going to get there. I tend to mentally work in .5 mile and 5 minute cutoffs, so if I'm close enough to the next .5 mile point or the next 5 minute increment I'll keep going. Sometimes endlessly it seems.

Thanks for the well wishes. Much better today. I feel pretty normal after getting a lot of sleep last night. But I decided to take the day off anyway because I needed to get work done after not getting anything done yesterday and it was super cold. I also skipped my ski lessons for the same reasons, and because my friend couldn't make it. I did take Stella for a 56 minute walk (I have no time or mileage based hang-ups for walking thank goodness). And I was so cold.
Sunset on our walk:8 -
@quilteryoyo I opt for distance.2

Can someone please post me some cold. So hot right now. It's a stunner day but I'm scheduled to get out for a quick 20 minute leg warm up before tomorrow's half and can't bear the thought! Might just wait a few hours.
It's the lovely, if hilly, Coatesville Half tomorrow. The race that prompted our impending move to the country. The weather is predicted to be 18˚C (64˚F) at 7am with 85% humidity so could be a stinker - I'd better run fast just to get it over with before it gets too hot! That being said, this is a B race, so I'm not supposed to push super hard, just a little bit hard. Anything under 1:55 would be good. Sub 1:50 would be amazing! But heat... hills...
Popped out to our site in Coatesville this morning as they've put in some posts and shifted some dirt...7 -

It all depends... If I'm feeling good, the longer of the two, if I'm tired, the shorter. If I'm really tired, I stop caring!2 -

Good luck on your half tomorrow @ContraryMaryMary! I'd be happy to overnight you some cold weather. Not looking forward to my single digits Fahrenheit run tomorrow but not sure I'd trade you for the humidity. But I hope you get your goal time! I find the races that aren't my main goal sometimes are the best ones, pressures off a little.ContraryMaryMary wrote: »quilteryoyo wrote: »Do any of you get hung up on being exactly at some number? @noblsheep: I queued up 3 gorges and Yangtze river, the Silk road and "China extending through time." But, I'm ahead enough, and China is big enough, that I'll add a Beijing segment also!
@katharmonic glad you're feeling better. Some of our hospital resident docs also had severe side effects. I had a sore arm, and profound fatigue for a day after the second shot, but consider myself lucky that it was a generally mild reaction

You can have some of my cold! 25 F feels like 14... too cold for me!
We ran about five miles on the far side of the river, sort of a poky run with frequent photo stops and walk breaks. Dressed warm enough, since I was wearing pretty much everything I own, it’s just that my muscles seem to go on strike when the temp drops below freezing. So we would run until we got fed up with running and then walk until we started to get chilly walking and then run some more.
OT:
Today started out stressful since I had a telehealth to beg my doctor not to make me go in for bloodwork, since they were not going to refill my regular thyroid and diabetes meds. Turns out the doctor was fine with that, just the practice was being a butt without even contacting her. So, pshew, one less thing to worry about. Start to head out the door to run. But then my mom calls and says she can’t get the bags of feed out to the barn because the road is frozen and also the horses are being rambunctious and not letting her blanket them. Do I have time I get a run in, and then come help? She says yes.
So, when I get there an hour and a half later (note, it takes a half hour just to drive from my place to hers) she has been wrestling with the horse blankets for 45 minutes, no gloves on so her hands are freezing, and the light in the barn has gone out but she didn’t bother to bring the lantern which is just for this exact purpose so she is trying to do this in the dark. This is my punishment for saying I wasn’t coming straight out, she wants to make sure I feel guilty. Except that I told her I would be there so I’m not guilty, just really annoyed.
My husband is both aggravated and a little frightened since he points out that while this starts as “Oh look how pitiful and neglected I am” theater, my mom actually seems to drop IQ points moment by moment when she gets into this state and if allowed to go on long enough she ends up doing things which really are dangerous. For example struggling with large animals in the middle of a patch of ice in the dark by herself. As soon as someone stops her, and makes her feel sufficiently catered to, her IQ recovers instantaneously and she behaves like a sane human. But if we hadn’t shown up in a timely fashion, who knows what she would have done. Would she eventually go inside, or just keep doing dumb stuff until she got frostbite?
Anyway I don’t even know, when I showed up the horses were the exact opposite of rambunctious - I didn’t even have to halter them to get them to stand, I think Frieda was actually asleep the whole time. But the blankets were put on with the wrong buckles hooked together and there was somehow a random bungee cord involved? I can’t tell if this is dementia, since my mom has been doing stuff like this for decades now. So is this normal annoying behavior or something new?
Anyway we had a pretty, if short and freezing, run, since everything is coated in ice! We are supposed to get 7 inches of snow Monday which is a once-a-decade event here.6 -
Good luck for tomorrow @ContraryMaryMary!
Well did my 16k this morning. I was tired before going out, and in hindsight kinda wished I left it for tomorrow. But stubborn I am. I went. And frankly tomorrow may not be any better as the reason I'm tired is because I've been working lates. And I'm working lates all weekend.
The run was great. I felt good. I made sure I kept to my pace goal the whole way this time and I did. The last km I started to get a few niggles - hip and calf. I took a brief walking break and the niggles went away. So ran the last bit. They didn't come back during the run, but now several hours later, I'm getting tightness in my calf. It's the same tightness that indicates scar tissue. So I am not worried, I'm sure it's just scar tissue getting used to things. It's definitely not sore at rest or while walking, just those first few steps when I start walking after resting a bit. Enough it's there.
Fortunately this week is a taper. So I have a 3k gentle run Monday. 5k gentle run wed. Nothing Thurs or Friday. A 6.5k run at regular pace Saturday then race on Sunday. I will be sensible. Any concerns on race day, I'll drop distance or something. But I'm confident a good sleep, and rest, I'll be all good. I was here a couple of months ago.7 -

Sounds good @avidkeo. Niggles after that many kilometres is very common - I take it as a good reminder to check my form. You’ll be great next Sunday. Perhaps, though, rather than doing 6km on Saturday, try a 5-10 minute warmup then 2km at race pace. It’s a good reminder for your legs as to what race pace should feel like but won’t fatigue you at all. 20 minutes total is more than enough the day before a race.6 -

Cloudy (again), low 20s F (again), with a nasty little wind from the east (again). Just a touch quicker today. Based on the weather forecast, looks like there will be a lot of treadmill time next week.
CRUSH your half, @ContraryMaryMary!!!
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)4 -
Just for you from todays run @ContraryMaryMary
I'm all about the distance @quilteryoyo how long it takes to get there is just how my body is in the day6 -
@katharmonic Very pretty sunset...cold looking, but pretty. Glad you are doing better. I tend to "work" in quarter mile and 5 min increments. Usually, I go with distance and don't worry about how long it takes me to get there.
@ContraryMaryMary Good luck on your HM today. It's probably already over. I'm sure you did great. Yeah for having things started on your new house. Love your response to my question!
@HonuNui It stinks that your cameras weren't working, but that is a great picture!
@rheddmobile Sorry about the horses and your mom, but glad you were able to help before she did anything really dangerous. If you are worried about dementia, I'd just keep a closer watch on the things she does...maybe write them down and talk with her doctor about them? The ice covered trees are beautiful. Sounds like you did great with your run/walk. That's a lot of predicated snow. We aren't supposed to get any. I guess it is going north of us. I hope they are wrong and you don't get that much either. If you do, just stay home and stay safe!
@Avidkeo You are doing great! You are going to kill that HM next week!

I'm so behind on threads, new job (yay!) meant really busy week. I can pretty much set my own hours though, so not affecting my running 😁
This morning's run was adventurous. As we still have perimeter closures in force and the same old routes are boring me to death, I decided at a crossroads to head over a couple of hills and down into the valley where some stables I worked at as a teenager are. The hills weren't actually as bad as I remembered, but what was open countryside is now covered in apartment blocks, and when I peeked through the gates the stables themselves, which we always kept spotless, are now run down and littered with broken furniture :-( So I turned down along the stream along the bottom of the valley. Back in the day there was a narrow path along the side that I walked, cycled and rode horses along. Not any more. I ended up IN the stream and had to scramble up a cliff to get out lolol
@Avidkeo rest, stretch, warm bath (got any epsom salts), whey protein, magnesium, foam roller, tennis ball, massage. I'm finding since I started my HM ready level stint in October I have a niggle that makes me limp a bit when I've been sitting for a long time. Fine once warmed up, and doesn't bother me at all running. I'm rolling the hell out of that leg and hip, seems to help. I mentioned it to the evil physio last time I saw her, she just laughed and said "well yeah, you're a distance runner." I forget that sometimes!
7 -
Good luck @ContraryMaryMary
It's 730am now, so she should be starting soon.
Thanks @eleanorhawkins for that. It's a huge relief to hear niggles are normal. Woken up niggle gree in the calf, just "tired" hips. Will take the kids our for a hike and then stretch/roll this avo.3 -
February Goal: 90 Miles
2/2: 5.31 miles
2/3: 6.07 miles
2/5: 5.26 miles
2/7: 10.10 miles
2/8: 5.30 miles
2/9: 5.32 miles
2/13: 1.35 miles
38.71/90 miles completed for February
It was 17°F feels like 4°F, but I got out there and got a run in. 1.35 miles is a lot shorter than my usual weekend run, but it will have to do. It isn't supposed to be this cold in Texas. 😁❄🏃♀️
The run was actually pretty good even though it was short. I just ran from my house to the cemetery and turned around and came back. It ended up being 1.25 miles. I was dressed well enough. But my hands were pretty cold even with a pair of gloves and mittens over them. It was lightly snowing which was kind of neat. We are supposed to get some real snow starting tonight or tomorrow and with the wind they are saying blizzard like conditions. I'm not sure how a Texas blizzard compares to those up north, but I am sure it will be really cold. I doubt I will try to run tomorrow, but if I do it will be short like today.

They extended the deadline for the virtual run, and we got more snow on top of the other snow, so I didn't bother with the forest today. I needed 5k to get my 40 for the week, so did 3.5 on the treadmill, then ran to the parcel locker with a sled, strapped my package to it and ran back home for the remaining 1.5. Less stressful than trying to drive down and then back up the hill to the house 😃6
-
@eleanorhawkins That does sound like an adventurous run. Yay for the new job and getting to set your own hours! Don't you just hate it when you go back to a place that holds fond memories and it is completely different and run down?
@kgirlhart You did great getting out and doing any distance in those conditions!
@polskagirl01 Love that you ran to get your parcel with a sled. Glad they extended the virtual run so you can try for a better run later.

With all of the cold and snowy conditions you guys are running in, I hate to complain about my rain and 42°F temps. But, it was not conducive to walking outside, so I did a treadmill walk today. I watched part of Jurassic Park III - not my favorite of the series. Anyway, to cut back on the boredom and hopefully get some fitness benefit, I decided to do a ladder today. I warmed up at 3.5 mph, then increased/decreased by 0.1 mph up to 4.0, doing each pace for 2 minutes. I did the ladder twice and then ended with a 3.5 mph cool down. The 3 miles took a total of 48:38 minutes. Garmin had the audacity to tell me I was "maintaining," but no "benefit." At least I'm not losing fitness.5 -

It was 5 degrees F this morning and I did not want to run but got it done with a few friends. It was not speedy. I was dressed okay except I could have used another thin layer under my running tights. I thought it would be more brutal than it was but we managed to pass the time pretty well.
I showered and warmed up and then dressed and went out again, this time to do a snowshoe hike locally. It had warmed up a bit to about 14 degrees and the sun was out. We hiked about 3.5 miles at a very nice park that hascross country ski trails and snowshoe/hiking trails. It was a nice hike. I actually got too warm on this one, it's hard to figure out the layering exactly.

Sounds like a great day @katharmonic , except for the cold temps. That's a lot of snow. How did your snow shoes work? Are your friends all jealous?2

As predicted, today’s event was hot, humid, and hilly. I had heavy legs which made the first seven kilometres hard going. I must talk to my coach about having a bigger taper!
Anyway, cracker day out. Fabulous to be running in the country on closed roads. Pleased with my performance given the conditions - I managed 1:53 - however it was never going to be a PB event.

On the subject of cold-weather running, Sunday’s 8k at Stanky Creek for the Winter off-road series was postponed until next Sunday because of the risk of fallen branches due to ice, and forecast extreme cold. Which surprises me because in years past this series has advertised that races will be run in any weather and that’s why it’s called a “Winter” series. But it’s probably for the best since windchill temps are supposed to be subzero and there’s a real risk Memphians who never run in anything similar might just die. Not to mention, if it snows, which it is forecast to start later in the day, the trails which are not visible except because the leaves there are slightly more packed than elsewhere, will become invisible.
Since I was wondering what I was going to do about duplicating the race conditions if I had to run it in the snow on Monday following the race, this nicely solves my conundrum. The new date is supposed to be 51 degrees and so is the day after.5 -
Hey all. Rest day today.
When I woke up, calf felt fine and no issues in hips. Went for a "Bush walk" with the kids for about 45 minutes. Had a few niggles but nothing I'm worried about. Yay.
At work now, doing the evening shift. And once again it's absolutely manic. No quiet shifts anymore. Oh well, it should go fast at least.
Short 3k gentle jog tomorrow.6
