It was 21F at 5:00 am for this morning’s run and I feel so blessed compared to the unusually cold weather some of you are experiencing.
@kgirlhart – Glad you are managing. I read this morning where several people have lost their lives due to this cold weather including people dying from carbon monoxide poisoning trying to stay warm in their cars. Stay safe my friend!
@katharmonic – I kept my browser open so that I could see that picture from Azores all day yesterday. Thank you!
@Avidkeo – Yay!!! So glad conditions are good enough for relief from the lockdown and for your race to happen.
@shanaber – I hope your hamstring is healed completely soon. You have been very patient with it but I know you are ready for it to be better.
Upcoming Races/Challenges:
CRAW (Circumpolar Race Around the World) – in progress
Run the World Challenge – in progress

Clear and minus 2 F this morning. Still snow on the roads so I just plodded along on the treadmill.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)3 -
Thanks @Teresa502 - I finally was able to get the MRI scheduled for next Thursday. Apparently for what my doctor wants I have to go to the hospital to have it done rather than the smaller center but as long as it gets done I don't care at this point.
@Avidkeo - YAY! So excited for you!!
I got an email from Revel Racing this morning about this race in Idaho. If I were racing now and running HMs again I would definitely sign up even though it is really expensive. It is a gorgeous area on the downhill portion of the road from one of me favorite places in the world (Redfish Lake, Sawtooth Mountains primitive area) into Ketchum/Sun Valley. I would have to go a week or so ahead of time though because it is at altitude for me, 8000ft for the Marathon and 6600ft for the HM! Anyways thought some here might be interested.
@quilteryoyo - good call on some our missing runners. I didn't know about @7lenny7's injury either.
I am also wondering about @mbaker566, I haven't seen any posts from her since the first of the month. I hope she and the pups are all doing ok and not buried under the snow!4 -
Finally got a run in! 9.4km in a park with a friend who kept talking and would not stop... a good distraction.
Added to the run the world challenge - we're nearly 1000km ahead, how the heck did that happen?! Y'all are really killing it out there, especially with the cold and snow. Stay safe everybody.
@Avidkeo Yay on the race!
@jillroy81 Welcome!
Very behind on the thread so hugged and liked. I really need to get back on this train/wagon thing we're rocking (yes I am very confused on my metaphors).7 -

@Teresa502 WTG for getting out to run that early in those temperatures.
@noblsheep Glad you had a good run today!
@shanaber I just looked up that national park. It's a beautiful area. I might have to keep this race in mind for when I'm running again too.

Have arrived in Wellington, where the HM is happening on the weekend. Today is Rest day for me today. We'll cross training. Took my mums e-bike for a 15km ride along the river. Those things are heavy. I took the assist completely off and it got hard haha. It also had gears though. Absolutely loved it!3

It was 19°F this morning, but no wind, so it wasn't too bad. I waited until nearly 11:00 and went out for a walk with Tippy. It was 25°F when we started, 30°F when finished. I was hoping that the field would still be frozen, but, everywhere the sun had hit, it was very muddy and slippery. (Yes. We had SUNSHINE all day today! It was so nice.) So, the first mile was slow - 3.3 mph. The second mile was driveway laps and much faster - 3.8 mph.) Still going strong. Have my second follow up in the morning, if the weather allows. We are supposed to get snow and freezing rain. I hope not. I really want to be able to go and hopefully get released to do more activities.4 -
@shanaber I have been eyeing doing one of those Revel races for a long time. That one looks amazing. I would love to do it. The half that is. Although maybe if I just tuck and roll downhill I can finish the full. I don't feel like I can plan trips just yet but a destination race is on my list for when I can. Glad your MRI is scheduled.
@noblsheep good to see you - what happened is we have our ringers @AlphaHowls and @Camaramandy648 cranking out the unbelievable miles and carrying us along for the ride!
@Avidkeo so happy your race is on. Enjoy the pre-race time. Keep it easy.

Beautiful clear blue sky winter day, so I was fooled into thinking it was going to be much warmer than it was when I went out at 4 pm. Brisk! A 5k full of chatting with a friend got it done for today.3 -
I wasn’t sure today whether I was going to run or tough it out on the stationary bike. Running in the snow last time was fun in a kind of “well now I can say I’ve done that” way, but I felt no urgent need to repeat the experience. Plus we got another several inches of snow today.
But then we had a minor crisis - I was unable to get bird seed anywhere. Kroger delivered yesterday but the only seed they had left was one small bag of cockatiel feed which lasted my cold feeder birdies less than a day. Home Depot had seed but cancelled all deliveries due to weather. Amazon not delivering. Roads completely undriveable. I felt miserable after doing my stretches outside and watching the little juncos and sparrows hopefully pecking at nothing and looking at me trustingly. Little birdies like that can die literally overnight in very cold weather if they don’t have food to power their little engines. I was complaining when I thought, hey, Home Depot is really not that far, why not run there?
We never go in that direction when running because the roads are very unsafe. There’s a big bridge and overpass, and the bridge has a homeless encampment underneath it, and there are people coming off the overpass in all directions at highway speeds, and no sidewalks. Nearer my house there is a half mile stretch of road with MORE THAN ONE cross with stuffed animals piled next to it marking the death of a child pedestrian. The city took notice of TWO little children on two separate occasions getting flattened, lowered the speed limit put in a bike lane here, and in order to gently encourage the absolute nitwits to not drive in the bike lane, they put a parking lane between the road and the bike lane. So what do people do? Now they use the bike lane to illegally pass on the right whenever anyone drives the speed limit.
So yeah, we don’t run there, because we like living! But! Today it’s snowing and Memphians are allergic to snow! So no cars on the road.
Home Depot turns out to be only a mile and a half away. Snow still pretty deep and now there is a layer of ice in there, but we made a little better time than last run since it was packed better, first mile was 13 minutes even with frequent stops to get off the road and stand in the bushes and wait as cars passed. There were a few cars after all, but not nearly as many. The bridge was a little hair raising (no sidewalks and no shoulder) but most people were willing to hog the center of the road and let us have the sides. The homeless have hopefully found shelter elsewhere. Had to wait 15 minutes for Home Depot to sort out our order, and then we were on our way home with 28 lbs of birdseed!
I have always been tempted to do a ruck run. My husband, who was an Airborne Ranger, was not so enchanted by the idea. We don’t own backpacks anymore since ours were stolen, so we weren’t sure how we planned to get sacks of seed home. But we have swag bags! So we put our arms through the straps and clipped the swag bags in front with carabiners (also from swag bags) and it worked pretty well.
Birdies were so pleased to see me! It felt very gratifying to watch my yard full of dozens of birds making up for lost time stuffing their faces.
View from the bridge over the Nonconnah, covered in snow.

Advice please!
I can get some brand new gel kayanos for 180 (usually 300). But they are kayano 23s. The model number doesn't worry me, they fit great. But being 23s mean they are 4 years old. Would you trust shoes that are 4 years old? It's the rubber perishing I worry about.
I'm not in an urgent rush to update shoes, my existing ones should last till Easter when I'll replace them in the sales.
Thanks!

*So, my 2021 resolution is to hike/run all 193 (or 195 depending on your source) countries of the world this year. This could be difficult, since I don’t have a passport. But YouTube to the rescue! I have been using the site to take train “trips” recently, and have found them strangely motivating. Why not use Youtube vlogs to hike/run the world (and learn something about each country)?

As an Asics fan I never buy the current model, mine are always 2-3 years old. When new models come out I do try them and there is such little difference in the shop I cannot tell why I am paying more. There will be some tech advances and some marketing BS to make sure they sell new shoes every year though I look at it that if I would have bought the shoes a year ago why wouldn't I buy them now?2 -
Thinking positive thoughts for all of you dealing with the snow that no one loses power and that it warms up quickly for you.
Tuesday, I got in a mile before my body pump class, and yesterday I walked a little under 3 miles while talking on the phone to a friend. We are contemplating another marathon, even though I swore I’d never do another...2 -

Snowed last night; still snowing this morning. I will never again write about a "paper cut winter" where the snow gods can read it. They put away their Number 10 plain white envelopes and brought out the katanas just to show me who's boss.
@rheddmobile I'm glad you were able to help the birds. Did Home Depot charge you tuppence?
@Avidkeo I always buy the oldest version I can find of the shoe I like. I doubt that sitting around contributes to a significant degradation of durability. My shoe mileage is all over the place anyway.
@quilteryoyo Make sure you post your snow pictures today. I hope you were able to get to the doctor for your checkup.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)2 -
Hi everyone. I skimmed the last few pages but am woefully behind. I haven't run in about a week, mostly due to weather. My family was on a long weekend trip and came back to Houston a day early to beat the worst of the weather as we knew it would shut down everything. We made it back a few hours before the freezing rain started and had time for a quick grocery trip before it got too dangerous to be out.
We are north of Houston and temps got down to about 9F on the coldest night. Our power was initially fine but we had a pipe freeze so we were without water for a couple of days. We think it was a section in the wall of our uninsulated garage. We tried to defrost it but without direct access we just couldn't get it thawed. We had left a faucet to drip but obviously not enough to overcome the low temps. But we got lucky and it defrosted without bursting!
Then yesterday morning our power went out and stayed out for about 14 hours. It got cold in here but we were lucky compared to so much of the state where millions of people were without power, some for 70+ hours.
Then, like a miracle, the power came back on right at bedtime last night. So today we are warm AND have running water! All the luxuries!!
And to top this week off, my father-in-law got sick and fell twice yesterday. My husband and I had to go lift him back into bed and finally got them to send him to the hospital. He got admitted this morning and we're waiting for an update.
I'm thinking of heading out for a short run this afternoon because I'm getting antsy. Even if I wanted to run the last few days it's just been too cold and icy. I literally don't have gear for this weather. Now the ice is melting off the sidewalks and the temps are getting to a point that I actually have clothing for.
Thinking of all my other Texas peeps and hoping you're doing ok. I'm sure there are others dealing with this storm too and I hope y'all are ok.13 -
Sounds brutal @martaindale, and everyone else enduring the big freeze. My thoughts are with you.1
-
Glad everything turned out ok for you @martaindale, relatively speaking. Yes this weather is nuts for us in Texas. My daughter is in SW Houston and had no power for over 24 hours, now they have power but no water. Will be several days they told her. My son went to visit his GF in Galveston, and they lost both electricity and water for about 8 hours. They have snow on the beach!!
Hope your HM goes well @Avidkeo! Thinking good thoughts for you.
We are blessed to have both power and water for now. Some parts of the city are under a boil water order, but we aren't. But told to aggressively ration.
5 miles on the treadmill today. Was brave enough to try setting the treadmill at 10 for a full minute. Garmin said I hit a peak of 13.5 mph 😳
7 -
@Scott6255 Glad you are ok.
Houston water district is a mess right now. I'm glad your daughter at least got her power back. I saw some pics of Galveston and it is so surreal seeing snow on the beach. The island got hit really hard.0 -
@Eaglesfanintn That's really pretty, but not really conducive to running.
So, we can blame this all on you @Tramboman ?
@martaindale Glad you got home before the worst hit and weren't without power or water for long. Hope your father in law is okay.
@Scott6255 Wow! That's fast! Great job!3 -

Had this slush on the raised porch. It had poured rain after the snow, running the gutters over. That made the interesting patterns. I do wonder how much snow we had before it warmed up and rained.
This is the same view when I got home at 2. If you look closely, there's just a little ice left.
Well, if you looked under the spoiler, you know that we didn't get much snow and the roads were clear. So, I was able to get to my follow up appointment. He said I was doing great. All of my minor concerns are normal healing. The major things are:
I can drive! On the way home I made an appointment to get my hair cut. It's getting ridiculous.
I can sleep in my bed in any position I chose! I hope that means I'll sleep better, but now that I'm used to the recliner, I'm not holding my breath.
Still can't run for 2 more weeks and then have to start really slow and make sure it doesn't hurt.
Six more weeks until I can try tennis. That's a little longer than expected, but the racquet swinging and turning puts a lot of pressure on the sternum.
I was tired when I got home, but made myself go for an easy treadmill walk. I did a ladder from 3.3 - 3.6 - 3.3 mph, walking for 5 minutes at each level.10 -

Great news!!!1 -
Hypothetical question. Which watch would you get and why between garmin Fenix 6s Pro and garmin forerunner 945?
And go!0 -
I'm so glad that your race isn't cancelled @avidkeo!
Thanks @quilteryoyo and @teresa502 I haven't run since my short around the block with my husband on Sunday. I think it is too dangerous at least for me. The streets are still mostly covered with snow and some icy spots. I live in a small town and we have 2 highways one going East/West and one going North/South. The highways have been cleared, but the side roads have not. Usually in the morning I run on the sidewalk next to the highway because it is well lit. But when they cleared the roads they dumped all the snow on the sidewalk so right now it is impassable. I am hoping to be able to run this weekend since it is supposed to finally get above freezing. But I will definitely wait until I think it is safe. I'm just glad I have been lucky. We only lost power for a short time on Monday evening and we haven't had any problems with our water. A lot of people are just now getting power restored and there are lots of burst pipes as well.
@rheddmobile That's awesome. I'm glad you were able to get your birds fed. You are braver than me though. I did run when it first started snowing, but I am nervous about running with the streets the way they are right now. Maybe if I had trail shoes I would, but probably not.
@martindale I'm glad the pipe thawed without major damage and you've got your power back.
@scott6255 I'm glad you have power and water.
Great news @quilteryoyo! You'll be back running in no time.4 -
Ugh, I had stuff typed out and my computer froze up and it's gone. So - hand in there all in the icy south. Stay safe and warm.
Great news on your checkup @quilteryoyo! Especially good being back in your own bed and able to drive.

Another treadmill warmup today before strength training. It was a good strength training day, not much to report about the run except that I seem to get wildly different paces on my Garmin for the same treadmill setting so something is still not quite in synch there.4 -
Hypothetical question. Which watch would you get and why between garmin Fenix 6s Pro and garmin forerunner 945?
And go!
I'd go for Fenix 6S because it's the smallest, however, read the following for a more informed view: https://www.pocket-lint.com/fitness-trackers/buyers-guides/garmin/143061-best-garmin-watch-fenix-forerunner-and-vivo-compared4
