Annie I agree with Carol. Also it might help to do stretching exercises before walking and after. I had a knee issue and the physical therapist who was helping me with exercises noticed my shoes and said that was part of my problem. I needed shoes with better arch support. I am also starting to get some bunions and I have learned having tight calf muscles can contribute to this problem. The bunions started when I had to wear boots with yaktracks. I now have inserts and no longer had to wear the yak tracks and I am feeling an immediate improvement. I need to follow my own advice on the stretching...

I saw your reply to Carol after I had written this. Yes I learned to hard way it is cheaper to make sure you have good shoes.

Rori I was fortunate to be able to make our appointment at our local Walgreen's. It was less than a mile to drive and took 35 minutes. They make you wait 15 minutes after the shot. Other pharmacies are starting to have them to, so this might be an option for you. The other twenty was the drive and getting all the paperwork straightened out and getting the shot.

I feel almost back to normal today. The arm I got the shot in is redder this time than last. Otherwise good to go. I got the second shot Friday morning. Now I am looking forward to March 26th and then I will be fully protected.

Machka - I bet if you looked online for an essential oil business or company you could find one.
I have been taking an ice cold wet cloth into the bedroom and I lay it on my neck when I wake up. It has helped too.
I too prefer to have quick meals during the week, the weekend doesn’t bother me as much. Rodger seems to think we need supper the minute I walk in the door. I only have a 5 minute commute so am home most nights by 430.
Will your landlord help with the railings or is this something you have to do at your own expense? Will your WCB cover it as it’s for your husband’s safety.

Tracey in Edmonton
Kim - that’s total, by the time I bought the ingredients for what we had I would have spent close to $30 if I even knew how to make ginger beef and egg rolls.

I am not a cook, I can keep us from starving and I haven’t killed anyone yet. That’s about the sum of my cooking skills. I absolutely hate having to figure out supper and meals each day and don’t find it pleasant in any way. I do however, like and enjoy making a big meal for all of my family, like lasagna, turkey dinner, roast beef dinner and the like.
It’s the day to day I dislike.

Tracey

I'm right there with you!

Thank goodness grocery stores have a wide variety of quick options these days.

I also have a rule ... if you stay home and aren't at work all day, you cook, clean and do all the house stuff. So that's what my husband does. I know he can't do as much as I would like done, and that's OK. He does do what he can and it takes the pressure off me.

One of the things he does is make dinner. I take care of my own lunches and breakfasts (if I eat them) but he makes dinner. Complicated cooking is a bit much for him, so we use a combination of frozen or packaged things and heaps of fresh or frozen veg. A quick one for him is soup (from a tin) with frozen veg thrown in. The other day he added chickpeas as well which was nice. There are several packaged Indian meals I get and they are like the soup. Dump it into a bowl, add heaps of frozen veg, heat and serve over rice and there you are.

Recently we've been having salad with some things too. I showed him how to make a quick salad and with nice fresh veg available this summer, he has done that a few times.

He also cleans up the kitchen and loads or unloads the dishwasher ... at his own pace.

I don't mind doing a meal or two once in a while. I'll create something in the slowcooker which will give us a couple meals maybe every other month and occasionally I'll do something else because I get the sudden urge to try something.

M yes balusters or here hand rails can get pricey especially if wrought iron. If you can find a good handyman he could build one out of wood. It might be more resonable. Here railings are often code to prevent falls. I installed a short one on our step to the garage. I installed it into the wall. It makes a big difference in going down that step. We also changed the riser of the step. It was 12 inches and I could tell over time it would hurt me knees. We had installed 3" block on top of the concrete step so the rise became 9 and 9 rather than 6 and 12. I am strongly in favor of railings/balusters. If you present it as a safety issue you might have more luck getting the agency on board. Again the 12" riser was out of code. Now it is within code. Sometimes codes are a pain here but they often have safety behind them.

The first thing I'll do is get a few quotes ... now that I know what I'm looking for! :)

I would like them in two locations and they don't have to be very extensive.

How much is corned beef(that you have to cook) in your area?
I found three stores that have it on sale right now for $1.88 a pound, limit of two. Yes, I did get two at each store. Last year we couldn't find any so wanted to make sure we have plenty.
I have two in the pressure cooker now so they can chill and I can slice thin for dinner tomorrow.
The other two are in the freezer.
They are not very big and will shrink to about half I am sure so that is why I cook two plus I really want left overs for sandwiches and to make some hash.
The guys don't like it usually but found that if I do it the day before, let it totally chill so I can slice it thin, they all like it- Even my mother in law likes it and she says she doesn't like corned beef.

I don't think I've ever had corned beef (rarely eat beef) however, I looked it up and it's $9/kg. That would be about $4/lb, assuming our dollars are equal.

Did Leslie Sansone’s 1 & 2 mile walk DVD. Work tomorrow so no formal exercise but I know I’ll get a good amount of steps in

M – we got the railing by from the upper patio area down to the pool for the exact same reason – safety. The other steps look straight so you might be able to get away with a straight rail. Good luck!

Happy Mother’s Day to all who celebrate it!

Made avocado brownies for Vince (I just accidentally on purpose won’t mention the avocado). I think they’re a bit too gooey, but I bet Vince will like them. Next time I’ll just bake them longer. Then made a salmon loaf for us to have later in the week and probably next week

Kylia – congrats on winning that pocketbook and the paintings. Sorry you had a migraine, tho. I’d like to find a large painting of a beach scene for the condo. Well…one will turn up. No need to rush

Rori – thanks for popping in. What a snowfall! Listen, when we were at the condo in FL (lots of senior citizens who can’t go out) there was a police car there one day. Actually, it was the day we got there. The president of the condo assoc. told us that the police come to give vaccinations to people who can’t go out. If you were to call your police dept., explain your situation, they probably would do something similar.

Margaret – I didn’t know that tight calves caused bunions!

:) It was nice this morning so we got outside and raked and bagged debris from the nearby trees. It rained later and by the time of my evening walk it was cold and windy.

:)Rori, It's good to hear from you and see that winter is still alive and well. That's a great picture.

"Get to do"s and "chose well"s
Chose well: livestream church, found my tax error, re-keyed donations, filed taxes.
Bonus: got back on the wii this morning, told myself “No, thanks!” to a third glass of wine this evening.
Get to do: take BP, dogs to powerline, board minutes, call D re: sticky keyboard, Norton and windows updates, call S, fire district: input 2019 call sheets into NFIRS, work with chief on equipment letter, substance abuse policy, NFIRS mutual aid and other missing details, call Credit union re: credit card, ask for boots donator contact info, appreciation letter or certificate to boots donator, index mutual aid files; FM Cu, watch STAS Day 20, make experimental almond paste, declutter sideboard, practice new dances (Do Your Thing, Pure Movies to Wine, Beer, Whiskey, I ain’t never gonna love nobody but Cornell Crawford (Alley cat), A Little Less Broken, One Margarita, I’m so used to being broke, All Night, Nothing but You, Blame it on my beating heart, Homesick); finish mulching flowerbed, invest another 10 minutes in prepping living trust, Freddie’s for complete series TDAP <$48, get Shingrix vaccine, find and configure a screen time popup, figure out where to plant the last of the naked lady bulbs, and soon as it warms up above 50 and dries out below 60% humidity I’ll tape and spray paint those rusted areas of Aunt Elsie’s stove. Reconcile Joe’s EOB’s Thrivent shows only 2263.48 so far, next BGBS ask Terry about GB’s FD firetruck tax levy – contacts, media, advocate???, Reward: inventory seeds, plan this spring’s garden, wishlist replenishments, Last week in March: call Wild Rivers (541 247 3514) for dog wash/nail trim appointments.
Mindful March:
14: Find ways to enjoy any chores or tasks that need doing: hmm, couldn’t find any way to enjoy the taxes. Will put on some music and dance-vacuum tomorrow.

Katla diatomaceous earth and duster
The duster I used is no longer available on Amazon. Got the diatomaceous earth from an organic food buying group “Food grade” is probably unnecessary, but since I use it around our kitchen. . .
This combination looks least expensive. The dust tends to clog, it helps to put a coin in the duster to help break up the clumps. And you’ll want to wear a mask ;) while dusting, bet you have some of those around!
https://smile.amazon.com/Harris-Diatomaceous-Powder-Duster-Included/dp/B0728JL9SQ/ref=sr_1_4?crid=VR36E3FGYM3L&dchild=1&keywords=diatomaceous+earth+duster&qid=1615781161&s=lawn-garden&sprefix=diatomac,lawngarden,295&sr=1-4.
Heather those pics lifted my heart.
Kylia safe travels and hope the migraine goes the other way.
Tracey Fingers X’d for the new workshop, toilet and front door ;) Our refund will go into the pump room/water system upgrade savings account. Hopefully this year, depending on how much it costs to pump out the septic (thanks Lisa!) No cent sign on my laptop keyboard either.
Annie “3 minutes on high” that sounds like Joe! Not that I’m complaining, he cooks for himself and I’m relieved I don’t have to.
Debbie in Napa Fred Meyer sale $3.99/lb flat cut, $2.99/lb point cut, both this and last year. We both love corned beef hash so the corned beef and cabbage meal is not the main attraction. I uses Mama’s electric carving knife to slice, as otherwise it just shreds. ;} Interesting tip about how to prep beef for Chinese stir fry (slice the meat thin while partially frozen then soak it in water w/ baking soda in it for 15 min, then rinse, and rinse, and rinse-if you don't rinse well enough you will taste the baking soda. After I rinse it the last time I let it soak in cold water until I am ready to cook. It will foam up a little from the last of the baking soda.) Would it work for pork or chicken too?
Rori thank you so much for posting. You have been on my mind, especially with the weather. Keep safe! Trust you’ve already tried this, but this is how we found the Pfizer vaccine nearby and were able to make a convenient appointment: https://vaccinefinder.org/search/
Machka Like you, I cook for both of us only once or twice a month.
Kim Brava for persisting despite your mother’s misbehavior. Proud of you for keeping smiling through these trials. Bravissima!

Salads: My favorite salad lately has been romaine, baby mustard mix, sometimes with radishes, pepperoncini or avocado, and Caesar dressing. My own cole slaw with currants and spicy pecans. Before that it was iceberg lettuce with Roquefort. Baby lettuce with turkey breast, cranberries, candied walnuts with a blue cheese vinaigrette. Sliced cucumbers and green beans with white onions in oil and vinegar. Pickled beets. Used to love a spinach, mandarin oranges salad with almonds and citrus dressing, but that restaurant closed long ago. Later this week I’ll try chopped celery with blue cheese dressing.

Salad dressing: in restaurants: Roquefort. At home: my own sweet red French dressing or any good Caesar dressing with parmesan, romano or asiago cheese but NO anchovies

Heather’s pics, Rori’s picture, then Machka’s. What contrasts!

Strange occurrence here. Dogs woke me with crazy barking. Startled out of sleep and not thinking clearly I got up and let them out without first putting on either my glasses or my slippers. Heard a voice call “Hello!” and could only vaguely make out the figure of a man and a dark vehicle (SUV? Van? Truck?) I said “Please wait while I get my slippers” while the dogs continued to bark. He called out “Do you know the way to Mark and Kathy’s parking lot? Mark and Kathy up the hill?” “Sorry, no I do not.” I replied. He quickly got back in his van and drove down the drive.

Our driveway is .2 mile long. Its entrance is .3 mile up a gravel road. I rechecked the county tax records and there are no taxpayers nearby named Mark or Kathy. Joe urged me next time to just let the dogs out when they bark, and not rush out. Let them “talk” to whomever. He’s right. I posted it to the NextDoor app, as it just feels as though someone might be casing our sparsely populated, heavily forested neighborhood. Grateful for the dogs, Joe and his personal protective devices.

Lighter, lovelies!

Barbara - i should definitely have a conversation with the police about that incident. <3
Shame you didn't have your glasses on to get his number. Anything you remember could be helpful, so write it down - shape , colour of car, sound of engine, height, build of man, accent etc. If you have seen him, someone else will have.

Machka - I find myself wondering about your rental agreement with your landlord. How would it work about the balustrades? Permission? Funding?

Rori - I do hope you can have a conversation with your doctor about the jab. Over here there are provisions for home visits for special circumstances. Someone mentioned the fire department.

I've been having a racing heartbeat in the night fairly often. Last night was the worst for a while, probably the huge pizza and alcohol. I've been Googling and they say it's common and nothing to worry about, but it wakes me up and keeps me awake. I have no problem at all in the day. I'm better at night if I don't drink alcohol.
They say it's also stress, but I don't feel more stressed than usual and yesterday was a lovely day. It's not fast enough to be AFib, but enough for me to notice and make it hard to settle. I have alcohol of some kind maybe three, or four, days a week. Most nights are OK. Last night was the worst fast heartbeat in a long while, so I'm thinking the large injection of carbohydrate from the pizza had something to do with it.
On the good side I managed to intentionally burn over 1,000 calories on exercise yesterday!

Lying on the bed writing this at 6.52 am, my heart rate is back to 60 beats a minute.

Kim - So sorry to hear about your mother. :'( I was pleased to hear from another front sleeper though. We are 1% - 2% of the population. Rebecca said she sometimes front sleeps, but not usually.

My DSIL is considering having a whole ankle replacement. We all had a lovely chat on the phone yesterday after pizza. It's a long rehabilitation, up to a year, and she is being referred to a top surgeon. Big decision. She has the determination to do the physio afterwards. She is otherwise very fit at 67. I mentioned the women on this thread who have had big surgeries, like Barbie, and come through, with discipline and application.

Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx

Salad - I love green salad, fruit salad, and potato salad - I also love my mom's macaroni salad it's about 1/3 tiny shrimp so it's not the typical macaroni salad. My favorite lettuce is romaine, so much of the leaf lettuces are soft, I like the crunch of romaine. Spinach and cabbage are also great. I have found Bolthouse Dressing, it is yogurt based so is sold from a refrigerated case, almost all are in the 40-50 calories per 2 tablespoons and the ingredients are things that you know not names you can't say LOL. Of course for those of us who are lactose intolerant they would not work, but I like the variety quality and calorie count.

Just a heads up for folks in the US some of us may be eligible for the stimulus check that is being sent/deposited this time it is being called EIP my mom called me to warn about this new scam, she did not understand the EIP was this time's name for for the Stimulus and it is arriving in a white envelope not very official looking.

Good morning. Feeling better.
Heather- I think it is good to not take the second shot if you had the virus plus a severe reaction to the first one. My retina specialist is Chinese and he told me not to take any shots. Oh well, wish I had waited.
KJ - safe travels. Weather may be tricky for you. Glad you enjoyed your time in TX.
Rori - my girls in CO had Hugh drifts. Completely covered cars. Stay safe.
Going to finish pruning my roses this morning so better get busy. Just finished cleaning out my freezer and tossing food that defrosted and refrozen when we were out of power.

Rori: The snowfall where you live is beautiful and deep. I hope you’re able to get your vaccinations before too long. Like Margaret, we have had our Pfizer vaccinations through our local Walgreens. We each have one dose down, and one more to go at the end of March. We were able to go online and select our day and times for the second dose. :star:

Machka: My favorite salad is romaine lettuce with green onlons. I make my own salad dressing. DH likes blue cheese best. Thank you for the lovely summertime post! :flowerforyou:

Kim: Your mom’s fall is very much like mine at the end of December. Healing is occurring, but it is slower than I anticipated. Give her my sympathies. I know what it is like. :ohwell: On another topic, I also love green salad and potato salad. I’m not a fruit salad fan but I love fresh fruit. Apples and oranges are favorites as are green grapes.

Barbara: We both have masks in each of our cars and additional ones in the house, too. :star:

Heather: Your racing heartbeat seems worrisome. I hope you’re able to consult with your physician for good advice. I would certainly ask for a medical consultation in your situation, even if only via the telephone. If the doctor tells you that you need a visit in person, follow through.

My day is off to a #@# start. I stepped in unseen dog poo in the yard. I have my shoes cleaned off now. :grumble: I hope the rest of the day goes a little better. :ohwell:
